A random collision process with transition probabilities belonging to the same type of distribution is considered. It was proved that if the characteristic function of the initial distribution has a positive radius of convergence, then the sequence {Fn(x)} converges weakly to a distribution G(x) [9]. We define a metric e1[Fn;G], which is analogous to the functional e[f] introduced by Tanaka to Kac's model of Maxwellian gas [10]. We prove that e1[Fn; G] is monotone non-increasing as n → ∞, and also the convergence of the sequence {Fn(x)} under the weaker assumption that for some a > 1 the initial distribution has an ath moment.

The benefit obtained by a selfish robot by cheating in a real multirobotic system can be represented by the random variable Xn,q: the number of cheating interactions needed before all the members in a cooperative team of robots, playing a TIT FOR TAT strategy, recognize the selfish robot. Stability of cooperation depends on the ratio between the benefit obtained by selfish and cooperative robots. In this paper, we establish the probability model for Xn,q. If the values of the parameters n and q are known, then this model allows us to make predictions about the stability of cooperation. Moreover, if these parameters are modifiable, it is possible to tune them to guarantee the viability of cooperation.

Important parameters of particle size distributions in dispersed systems in engineering and related fields are ratios of moments and inverse powers of these ratios, known as mean sizes. The variation in these parameters is examined for the simplest growth model in which the size distribution is translated, and the results for this process considered in relation to the problems of models of other growth processes. For initial size distributions with monotone hazard rate, the results are particularly significant, and the properties of the normalised moments of other distributions are also considered.

The strong law of large numbers of the Marcinkiewicz–Zygmund type is established for the total population in a subcritical branching process with immigration. The moment convergence of the total population is obtained under appropriate moment conditions on the offspring distribution and the immigration distribution.

Bartlett and Williams have shown that the hypothesis of the goodness-of-fit of one or more assigned discriminant functions in the case of several groups can be tested using Wilks's A criterion. By factorizing this A criterion suitably, it is also possible to test whether the directions of the given functions are inadequate or whether the number of proposed functions is inadequate. Hotelling's statistic is a competitor of Wilks's A in multivariate analysis; previously its use for this hypothesis and also for the dimensionality and direction aspects of this hypothesis was unknown. The present paper derives the appropriate type statistics for this and also gives their exact null distributions.

How often will a store with two elevators be without service assuming that repairs are quick? In this note it is shown that, under very mild assumptions on the operating- and repair-time distributions, the times when the building is without service are asymptotically Poisson.

In more than four decades of prolific scientific activity, Lajos Takács has produced so much that no one contributor to this Festschrift can hope to cover all of it in a balanced way. I thus propose to make a virtue of necessity, and concentrate on those aspects of Takács' work which have particularly interested or influenced me, and on the impact Takács' ideas in these areas have had on the subsequent development of the subject.

The class of processes formed as the aggregation of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes has proved useful in modeling time series from a number of areas and includes several interesting special cases. This paper examines the second-order properties of this class. Bounds on the one-step prediction error variance are proved and consistency of the minimum contrast estimation is demonstrated.

Under certain assumptions on the dependence structure of the residual lives of the insured (i.e. their independence, positive association, or negative association), in this paper we establish some laws of large numbers for the convex upper bounds, derived by the technique of comonotonicity, of the present value function of a homogeneous portfolio composed of the whole-life insurance policies.

We show that there exist symmetric properties in the discrete n-cube whose threshold widths range asymptotically between 1/√n and 1/logn. These properties are built using a combination of failure sets arising in reliability theory. This combination of sets is simply called a product. Some general results on the threshold width of the product of two sets A and B in terms of the threshold locations and widths of A and B are provided.

We give conditions under which the number of events which occur in a sequence of m-dependent events is stochastically smaller than a suitably defined compound Poisson random variable. The results are applied to counts of sequence pattern appearances and to system reliability. We also provide a numerical example.

We investigate the probabilistic evolution of a near-critical bisexual branching process with mating depending on the number of couples in the population. We determine sufficient conditions which guarantee either the almost sure extinction of such a process or its survival with positive probability. We also establish some limiting results concerning the sequences of couples, females, and males, suitably normalized. In particular, gamma, normal, and degenerate distributions are proved to be limit laws. The results also hold for bisexual Bienaymé–Galton–Watson processes, and can be adapted to other classes of near-critical bisexual branching processes.

A controlled heterogeneous collection of identical items is presented. According to their level of wear and tear, they are divided into a finite number of classes and the partition of the collection is allowed to change over time. A suitable exchangeability assumption is made to preserve the property that the items be identical. The role of the occupation numbers is investigated and a filtering problem is set up, where the observation is the cardinality of a particular class. A control on the dynamics of the items is introduced, and the existence of an optimal control is proved. A discrete-time approximation for the separated problem, which is a finite-dimensional one, is performed. As a consequence, an approximation for the value function is given.

We consider the problem of optimal consumption of multiple goods in incomplete semimartingale markets. We formulate the dual problem and identify conditions that allow for the existence and uniqueness of the solution, and provide a characterization of the optimal consumption strategy in terms of the dual optimizer. We illustrate our results with examples in both complete and incomplete models. In particular, we construct closed-form solutions in some incomplete models.

We introduce a notion of finite sampling consistency for phylogenetic trees and show that the set of finitely sampling-consistent and exchangeable distributions on n-leaf phylogenetic trees is a polytope. We use this polytope to show that the set of all exchangeable and sampling-consistent distributions on four-leaf phylogenetic trees is exactly Aldous’ beta-splitting model, and give a description of some of the vertices for the polytope of distributions on five leaves. We also introduce a new semialgebraic set of exchangeable and sampling consistent models we call the multinomial model and use it to characterize the set of exchangeable and sampling-consistent distributions. Using this new model, we obtain a finite de Finetti-type theorem for rooted binary trees in the style of Diaconis’ theorem on finite exchangeable sequences.

This paper studies the joint tail asymptotics of extrema of the multi-dimensional Gaussian process over random intervals defined as $P(u)\;:\!=\; \mathbb{P}\{\cap_{i=1}^n (\sup_{t\in[0,\mathcal{T}_i]} ( X_{i}(t) +c_i t )>a_i u )\}$ , $u\rightarrow\infty$ , where $X_i(t)$ , $t\ge0$ , $i=1,2,\ldots,n$ , are independent centered Gaussian processes with stationary increments, $\boldsymbol{\mathcal{T}}=(\mathcal{T}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{T}_n)$ is a regularly varying random vector with positive components, which is independent of the Gaussian processes, and $c_i\in \mathbb{R}$ , $a_i>0$ , $i=1,2,\ldots,n$ . Our result shows that the structure of the asymptotics of P(u) is determined by the signs of the drifts $c_i$ . We also discuss a relevant multi-dimensional regenerative model and derive the corresponding ruin probability.

In this paper we consider an infinite system of instantaneously coalescing rate 1 simple symmetric random walks on ℤ2, started from the initial condition with all sites in ℤ2 occupied. Two-dimensional coalescing random walks are a `critical' model of interacting particle systems: unlike coalescence models in dimension three or higher, the fluctuation effects are important for the description of large-time statistics in two dimensions, manifesting themselves through the logarithmic corrections to the `mean field' answers. Yet the fluctuation effects are not as strong as for the one-dimensional coalescence, in which case the fluctuation effects modify the large time statistics at the leading order. Unfortunately, unlike its one-dimensional counterpart, the two-dimensional model is not exactly solvable, which explains a relative scarcity of rigorous analytic answers for the statistics of fluctuations at large times. Our contribution is to find, for any N≥2, the leading asymptotics for the correlation functions ρN(x1,…,xN) as t→∞. This generalises the results for N=1 due to Bramson and Griffeath (1980) and confirms a prediction in the physics literature for N>1. An analogous statement holds for instantaneously annihilating random walks. The key tools are the known asymptotic ρ1(t)∼logt∕πt due to Bramson and Griffeath (1980), and the noncollision probability 𝒑NC(t), that no pair of a finite collection of N two-dimensional simple random walks meets by time t, whose asymptotic 𝒑NC(t)∼c0(logt)-(N2) was found by Cox et al. (2010). We re-derive the asymptotics, and establish new error bounds, both for ρ1(t) and 𝒑NC(t) by proving that these quantities satisfy effective rate equations; that is, approximate differential equations at large times. This approach can be regarded as a generalisation of the Smoluchowski theory of renormalised rate equations to multi-point statistics.

This paper considers two variants of M/G/1 queues with impatient customers, which are denoted by M/G/1+Gw and M/G/1+Gs. In the M/G/1+Gw queue customers have deadlines for their waiting times, and they leave the system immediately if their services do not start before the expiration of their deadlines. On the other hand, in the M/G/1+Gs queue customers have deadlines for their sojourn times, where customers in service also immediately leave the system when their deadlines expire. In this paper we derive comparison results for performance measures of these models. In particular, we show that if the service time distribution is new better than used in expectation, then the loss probability in the M/G/1+Gs queue is greater than that in the M/G/1+Gw queue.

We study, under mild conditions, the weak approximation constructed from a standard Poisson process for a class of Gaussian processes, and establish its sample path moderate deviations. The techniques consist of a good asymptotic exponential approximation in moderate deviations, the Besov–Lèvy modulus embedding, and an exponential martingale technique. Moreover, our results are applied to the weak approximations associated with the moving average of Brownian motion, fractional Brownian motion, and an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process.
