Signatures are useful in analyzing and evaluating coherent systems. However, their computation is a challenging problem, especially for complex coherent structures. In most cases the reliability of a binary coherent system can be linked to a tail probability associated with a properly defined waiting time random variable in a sequence of binary trials. In this paper we present a method for computing the minimal signature of a binary coherent system. Our method is based on matrix-geometric distributions. First, a proper matrix-geometric random variable corresponding to the system structure is found. Second, its probability generating function is obtained. Finally, the companion representation for the distribution of matrix-geometric distribution is used to obtain a matrix-based expression for the minimal signature of the coherent system. The results are also extended to a system with two types of components.

In this paper, several linear two-dimensional consecutive k-type systems are studied, which include the linear connected-(k, r)-out-of-$(m,n)\colon\! F$ system and the linear l-connected-(k, r)-out-of-$(m,n)\colon\! F$ system without/with overlapping. Reliabilities of these systems are studied via the finite Markov chain imbedding approach (FMCIA) in a novel way. Some numerical examples are provided to illustrate the theoretical results established here and also to demonstrate the efficiency of the developed method. Finally, some possible applications and generalizations of the developed results are pointed out.

We consider linear-fractional branching processes (one-type and two-type) with immigration in varying environments. For $n\ge0$, let $Z_n$ count the number of individuals of the nth generation, which excludes the immigrant who enters the system at time n. We call n a regeneration time if $Z_n=0$. For both the one-type and two-type cases, we give criteria for the finiteness or infiniteness of the number of regeneration times. We then construct some concrete examples to exhibit the strange phenomena caused by the so-called varying environments. For example, it may happen that the process is extinct, but there are only finitely many regeneration times. We also study the asymptotics of the number of regeneration times of the model in the example.

We have found a mistake in the proofs of Navarro (2008, Theorem 2.3(b) and 2.3(c)) due to misapplication of properties of hazard rate and likelihood ratio orders. In this paper we show with an example that the stated results do not hold. This example is interesting since it proves some unexpected properties for these orderings under the formation of coherent systems. The result stated in Navarro (2008, Theorem 2.3(a)) for the usual stochastic order is correct.

This paper concerns discrete-time Markov decision chains with denumerable state and compact action sets. Besides standard continuity requirements, the main assumption on the model is that it admits a Lyapunov function ℓ. In this context the average reward criterion is analyzed from the sample-path point of view. The main conclusion is that if the expected average reward associated to ℓ2 is finite under any policy then a stationary policy obtained from the optimality equation in the standard way is sample-path average optimal in a strong sense.

Let ${\mathrm{d}} X(t) = -Y(t) \, {\mathrm{d}} t$, where Y(t) is a one-dimensional diffusion process, and let $\tau(x,y)$ be the first time the process (X(t), Y(t)), starting from (x, y), leaves a subset of the first quadrant. The problem of computing the probability $p(x,y)\,:\!=\, \mathbb{P}[X(\tau(x,y))=0]$ is considered. The Laplace transform of the function p(x, y) is obtained in important particular cases, and it is shown that the transform can at least be inverted numerically. Explicit expressions for the Laplace transform of $\mathbb{E}[\tau(x,y)]$ and of the moment-generating function of $\tau(x,y)$ can also be derived.

We study the $R_\beta$-positivity and the existence of zero-temperature limits for a sequence of infinite-volume Gibbs measures $(\mu_{\beta}(\!\cdot\!))_{\beta \geq 0}$ at inverse temperature $\beta$ associated to a family of nearest-neighbor matrices $(Q_{\beta})_{\beta \geq 0}$ reflected at the origin. We use a probabilistic approach based on the continued fraction theory previously introduced in Ferrari and Martínez (1993) and sharpened in Littin and Martínez (2010). Some necessary and sufficient conditions are provided to ensure (i) the existence of a unique infinite-volume Gibbs measure for large but finite values of $\beta$, and (ii) the existence of weak limits as $\beta \to \infty$. Some application examples are revised to put in context the main results of this work.

Central limit theorems are given for the time taken for a population to increase by a factor k > 1 for a supercritical process, or to decrease by a factor k < 1 for a subcritical process. The size of errors is investigated so that confidence limits can be given for these times to O (m½) where m is the population size at t = 0.

In this paper three models are considered. They are the infinitely-many-neutral-alleles model of Ethier and Kurtz (1981), the two-parameter infinitely-many-alleles diffusion model of Petrov (2009), and the infinitely-many-alleles model with symmetric dominance Ethier and Kurtz (1998). New representations of the transition densities are obtained for the first two models and the ergodic inequalities are provided for all three models.

Let x denote a vector of length q consisting of 0s and 1s. It can be interpreted as an ‘opinion’ comprised of a particular set of responses to a questionnaire consisting of q questions, each having {0, 1}-valued answers. Suppose that the questionnaire is answered by n individuals, thus providing n ‘opinions’. Probabilities of the answer 1 to each question can be, basically, arbitrary and different for different questions. Out of the 2q different opinions, what number, μn , would one expect to see in the sample? How many of these opinions, μn (k), will occur exactly k times? In this paper we give an asymptotic expression for μn / 2q and the limit for the ratios μn (k)/μn , when the number of questions q increases along with the sample size n so that n = λ2q , where λ is a constant. Let p(x ) denote the probability of opinion x . The key step in proving the asymptotic results as indicated is the asymptotic analysis of the joint behaviour of the intensities np(x ). For example, one of our results states that, under certain natural conditions, for any z > 0, ∑1 {np( x) > z} = d n z −u ,d n = o(2q ).

$U{\hbox{-}}\textrm{max}$ statistics were introduced by Lao and Mayer in 2008. Such statistics are natural in stochastic geometry. Examples are the maximal perimeters and areas of polygons and polyhedra formed by random points on a circle, ellipse, etc. The main method to study limit theorems for $U{\hbox{-}}\textrm{max}$ statistics is via a Poisson approximation. In this paper we consider a general class of kernels defined on a circle, and we prove a universal limit theorem with the Weibull distribution as a limit. Its parameters depend on the degree of the kernel, the structure of its points of maximum, and the Hessians of the kernel at these points. Almost all limit theorems known so far may be obtained as simple special cases of our general theorem. We also consider several new examples. Moreover, we consider not only the uniform distribution of points but also almost arbitrary distribution on a circle satisfying mild additional conditions.

We consider a reflected superposition of a Brownian motion and a compound Poisson process as a model for the workload process of a queueing system with two types of customers under heavy traffic. The distributions of the duration of a busy cycle and the maximum workload during a cycle are determined in closed form.

Ebrahimi (2001) proposes an interesting model for assessing a system's reliability, expressing the failure time of the system in terms of a deterioration process and covariates. He also provides illustrative examples and gives some properties of the model. In this note, we give conditions for negative ageing of the system's lifetime, and we correct one of his statements. Moreover, for the lifetimes of two systems of the same kind, some stochastic comparisons are presented.

A useful result about leftmost and rightmost paths in two-dimensional bond percolation is proved. This result was introduced without proof in Gray (1991) in the context of the contact process in continuous time. As discussed here, it also holds for several related models, including the discrete-time contact process and two-dimensional site percolation. Among the consequences are a natural monotonicity in the probability of percolation between different sites and a somewhat counter-intuitive correlation inequality.

We consider semicoherent and mixed systems with exchangeable components. We present sharp lower and upper bounds on various dispersion measures (in particular, variance and median absolute deviation) of the system lifetime, expressed in terms of the system signature and the dispersion of a single component lifetime. We construct joint exchangeable distributions of component lifetimes with two-point marginals which attain the bounds in the limit.

A controlled heterogeneous collection of identical items is presented. According to their level of wear and tear, they are divided into a finite number of classes and the partition of the collection is allowed to change over time. A suitable exchangeability assumption is made to preserve the property that the items be identical. The role of the occupation numbers is investigated and a filtering problem is set up, where the observation is the cardinality of a particular class. A control on the dynamics of the items is introduced, and the existence of an optimal control is proved. A discrete-time approximation for the separated problem, which is a finite-dimensional one, is performed. As a consequence, an approximation for the value function is given.

A stationary stochastic process must satisfy various requirements to make it a realistic model for a phenomenon in the real world. Some of these requirements are quantitative, such as agreement of distribution or moments. Other, more qualitative requirements deal with the general behavior of the process. Two such requirements are non-singularity and asymptotic independence. Each will be discussed from a variety of points of view, and given precise definition in a succession of progressively stronger forms.

The problem discussed in this paper arose from the study of the effects of unresolved resonances on neutron cross-sections, but it is considered here in more general terms.

Events in a modified renewal process occur at successive intervals x1, x2, …, and the ith event has associated with it a parameter Γi. The random variables xi and Γi are all independent, and their probability distribution functions are known. Each event contributes to two quantities F(u) and G(v) measured at u and v respectively. The value of the total contribution of all events to G(v) is assumed to be known from observation: this paper gives formulae for the mean value of F(u) conditional on this known value of G(v).

Most generalizations of the classical occupancy model involve non-homogeneous shot assignment probabilities, but retain the independence of the individual shot assignments. Hence, these models are associated with non-homogeneous Poisson processes. The present article discusses a generalization in which the shot assignments are not independent, but which result in clustering of the shots. Conditions are given under which this clustered occupancy model converges to a Poisson cluster process. Limiting distributions for the number of empty cells are obtained for various allocation intensities when the total number of shots is deterministic as well as random. In particular, it is shown that when the allocation is sparse, then the limiting distribution of the number of empty cells is compound Poisson.

Some simple methods of estimating inbreeding from tests on a random sample of individuals are discussed. These are mostly iterative procedures, converging to the maximum likelihood estimate, with algorithms for finding standard errors. But there are problems of interpretation, both from the statistical and biological points of view.
