The multitype discrete time indecomposable branching process with immigration is considered. Using a martingale approach a limit theorem is proved for such processes when the totality of immigrating individuals at a given time depends on evolution of the processes generating by previously immigrated individuals. Corollaries of the limit theorem are obtained for the cases of finite and infinite second moments of offspring distribution in critical processes.

A branching process is described which contains some better-known simple branching processes as special cases. Variables examined are the rate of development, the number of individuals currently alive, and the duration of the process. The apparent dynamics of collapsing supercritical realisations are isolated.

We analyze average-based distributed algorithms relying on simple and pairwise random interactions among a large and unknown number of anonymous agents. This allows the characterization of global properties emerging from these local interactions. Agents start with an initial integer value, and at each interaction keep the average integer part of both values as their new value. The convergence occurs when, with high probability, all the agents possess the same value, which means that they all know a property of the global system. Using a well-chosen stochastic coupling, we improve upon existing results by providing explicit and tight bounds on the convergence time. We apply these general results to both the proportion problem and the system size problem.

Consider a Lamperti–Kiu Markov additive process $(J, \xi)$ on $\{+, -\}\times\mathbb R\cup \{-\infty\}$, where J is the modulating Markov chain component. First we study the finiteness of the exponential functional and then consider its moments and tail asymptotics under Cramér’s condition. In the strong subexponential case we determine the subexponential tails of the exponential functional under some further assumptions.

Consider a homogeneous Poisson point process of the Euclidean plane and its Voronoi tessellation. The present note discusses the properties of two stationary point processes associated with the latter and depending on a parameter $\theta$ . The first is the set of points that belong to some one-dimensional facet of the Voronoi tessellation and such that the angle with which they see the two nuclei defining the facet is $\theta$ . The main question of interest on this first point process is its intensity. The second point process is that of the intersections of the said tessellation with a straight line having a random orientation. Its intensity is well known. The intersection points almost surely belong to one-dimensional facets. The main question here concerns the Palm distribution of the angle with which the points of this second point process see the two nuclei associated with the facet. We will give answers to these two questions and briefly discuss their practical motivations. We also discuss natural extensions to three dimensions.

We examine a system of interacting random walks with leftward drift on ℤ, which begins with a single active particle at the origin and some distribution of inactive particles on the positive integers. Inactive particles become activated when landed on by other particles, and all particles beginning at the same point possess equal leftward drift. Once activated, the trajectories of distinct particles are independent. This system belongs to a broader class of problems involving interacting random walks on rooted graphs, referred to collectively as the frog model. Additional conditions that we impose on our model include that the number of frogs (i.e. particles) at positive integer points is a sequence of independent random variables which is increasing in terms of the standard stochastic order, and that the sequence of leftward drifts associated with frogs originating at these points is decreasing. Our results include sharp conditions with respect to the sequence of random variables and the sequence of drifts that determine whether the model is transient (meaning the probability infinitely many frogs return to the origin is 0) or nontransient. We consider several, more specific, versions of the model described, and a cleaner, more simplified set of sharp conditions will be established for each case.

In this paper we relate the set of structure-preserving equivalent martingale measures ℳsp for financial models driven by semimartingales with conditionally independent increments to a set of measurable and integrable functions 𝒴. More precisely, we prove that ℳsp ≠ ∅ if and only if 𝒴 ≠ ∅, and connect the sets ℳsp and 𝒴 to the semimartingale characteristics of the driving process. As examples we consider integrated Lévy models with independent stochastic factors and time-changed Lévy models and derive mild conditions for ℳsp ≠ ∅.

A spectrum of self-organizing rules including the move-to-front rule and the transposition rule are applied to the communication problem. The stationary distributions under these rules are obtained. Cost comparison between them is considered. In the special case of three paths, it is shown that the transposition rule always outperforms the move-to-front rule.

Recently, there has been considerable interest in the calculation of decay rates for models that can be viewed as quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) processes with infinitely many phases. In this paper we make a contribution to this endeavour by considering some classes of models in which the transition function is not homogeneous in the phase direction. We characterize the range of decay rates that are compatible with the dynamics of the process away from the boundary. In many cases, these rates can be attained by changing the transition structure of the QBD process at level 0. Our approach, which relies on the use of orthogonal polynomials, is an extension of that in Motyer and Taylor (2006) for the case where the generator has homogeneous blocks.

We consider a stochastic SIR (susceptible $\rightarrow$ infective $\rightarrow$ removed) model in which the infectious periods are modulated by a collection of independent and identically distributed Feller processes. Each infected individual is associated with one of these processes, the trajectories of which determine the duration of his infectious period, his contamination rate, and his type of removal (e.g. death or immunization). We use a martingale approach to derive the distribution of the final epidemic size and severity for this model and provide some general examples. Next, we focus on a single infected individual facing a given number of susceptibles, and we determine the distribution of his outcome (number of contaminations, severity, type of removal). Using a discrete-time formulation of the model, we show that this distribution also provides us with an alternative, more stable method to compute the final epidemic outcome distribution.

Sufficient conditions under which two random vectors are ordered in the sense of uniform conditional stochastic order (Whitt (1980), (1982)) with respect to planar regions are given. A natural classification of distributions based on this notion of stochastic order is defined and studied. A negative dependence property of Block et al. (1985) is shown to hold for this class of distributions. An application of these results in statistics is also presented.

We investigate properties of random mappings whose core is composed of derangements as opposed to permutations. Such mappings arise as the natural framework for studying the Screaming Toes game described, for example, by Peter Cameron. This mapping differs from the classical case primarily in the behaviour of the small components, and a number of explicit results are provided to illustrate these differences.

The classical one-compartment model with no input or pure death process is shown to be a limiting case of a ‘binomial cascade' model which has the same mean and in which particles exit the compartment in binomial clusters. The transition probabilities of the binomial cascade process are derived in closed form. The model is easily modified to allow Poisson input into the compartment. Distributional results are given for this model also. In particular, it is shown that the M/M/∞ queue is a limiting case.

This article describes the limiting distribution of the extremes of observations that arrive in clusters. We start by studying the tail behaviour of an individual cluster, and then we apply the developed theory to determine the limiting distribution of $\max\{X_j\,:\, j=0,\ldots, K(t)\}$ , where K(t) is the number of independent and identically distributed observations $(X_j)$ arriving up to the time t according to a general marked renewal cluster process. The results are illustrated in the context of some commonly used Poisson cluster models such as the marked Hawkes process.

We show that the supremum of the successive percentages of red balls in Pólya's urn model is almost surely rational, give the set of values that are taken with positive probability, and derive several exact distributional results for the all-time maximal percentage.

We derive a moderate deviation principle for word counts (which is extended to counts of multiple patterns) in biological sequences under different models: independent and identically distributed letters, homogeneous Markov chains of order 1 and m, and, in view of the codon structure of DNA sequences, Markov chains with three different transition matrices. This enables us to approximate P-values for the number of word occurrences in DNA and protein sequences in a new manner.

In this paper we first use the distribution of the number of records to demonstrate that the right tail probabilities of counts of rare events are generally better approximated by the right tail probabilities of a Poisson distribution than those of the normal distribution. We then show that the moderate deviations in Poisson approximation generally require an adjustment and, with suitable adjustment, we establish better error estimates of the moderate deviations in Poisson approximation than those in [18]. Our estimates contain no unspecified constants and are easy to apply. We illustrate the use of the theorems via six applications: Poisson-binomial distribution, the matching problem, the occupancy problem, the birthday problem, random graphs, and 2-runs. The paper complements the works [16], [8], and [18].
