1. Let X be a Banach space. Then a self-mapping A of X is said to be nonexpansive provided that ‖AX − Ay‖≤‖X − y‖ holds for all x, y ∈ X. The class of nonexpansive mappings includes contraction mappings and is properly contained in the class of all continuous mappings. Keeping in view the fixed point theorems known for contraction mappings (e.g. Banach Contraction Principle) and also for continuous mappings (e.g. those of Brouwer, Schauderand Tychonoff), it seems desirable to obtain fixed point theorems for nonexpansive mappings defined on subsets with conditions weaker than compactness and convexity. Hypotheses of compactness was relaxed byBrowder [2] and Kirk [9] whereas Dotson [3] was able to relax both convexity and compactness by using the notion of so-called star-shaped subsets of a Banach space. On the other hand, Goebel and Zlotkiewicz [5] observed that the same result of Browder [2] canbe extended to mappings with nonexpansive iterates. In [6], Goebel-Kirk-Shimi obtainedfixed point theorems for a new class of mappings which is much wider than those of nonexpansive mappings, and mappings studied by Kannan [8]. More recently, Shimi [12] used the fixed point theorem of Goebel-Kirk-Shimi [6] to discuss results for approximating fixed points in Banach spaces.

In [3] P. E. Conner showed that no abelian group with rank greater than 2 can act freely on Sn×Sn, the product of two spheres. G. Lewis [6] studied free actions of p-groups on Sn×Sn, when n is odd, n≢−l(p) and p is an odd prime. He showed that any p-group which has such an action must be abelian.

Let G be a polycyclic-by-finite group and let K[G] denote its group algebra over the field K. In this paper we discuss localization in K[G] and in particular we prove that every faithful completely prime ideal is localizable. Furthermore, using a sequence of localizations, we show that, for G polyinfinite cyclic, the classical right quotient ring (K[G]) is in fact a universal field of fractions for K[G]. Finally we offer an example of a domain K[G] which does not have a universal field of fractions.

In 1956, Jacobson asked whether the intersection of the powers of the Jacobson radical, J(R), of a right Noetherian ring R, must always be zero [4, p. 200]. His question was answered in the negative by I. N. Herstein [3], who noted that , where Z(2) denotes the ring of rational numbers with denominator prime to 2, affords a counterexample. In contrast, the ring , though similar in appearance to R1, satisfies . (Here, k denotes a field.)

The purpose of this note is to prove the following result.

Theorem 1. Let n be an integer greater than zero. There exists a prime Noetherian ring R of Krull dimension n + 1 and a finitely generated essential extension W of a simple R-module V suchthat

(i) W has Krull dimension n, and

(ii) W/V is n-critical and cannot be embedded in any of its proper submodules.

We refer the reader to [6] for the definition and properties of Krull dimension.

If G and H are elementarily equivalent groups (that is, no elementary statement of group theory distinguishes between G and H) then the definable subgroups of G are elementarily equivalent to the corresponding ones of H. But G′ of G, consisting of all products of commutators [a, b] = a−1b−1ab of elements a and b of G, may not be definable. Must G′ and H′ be elementarily equivalent?

In a recent paper, E. Størmer, among other things, proves the existence of an isometric isomorphism from the measure algebra M(G) of a locally compact abelian group G into BB(L2(G)), ([6], Proposition 4.6). Here we give another proof for this result which works for non-commutative G as well as commutative G. We also prove that the algebra L1(G, λ), with λ the left (or right) Haar measure, is not isometrically isomorphic with an algebra of operators on a Hilbert space. The proofs of these two results are taken from the author's Ph.D. thesis [4], submitted to the University of Edinburgh before Størmer's paper. The author wishes to thank Dr. A. M. Let ℤ and ℤ[i] have their usual meaning. Let Yo denote the noncommutative ring of integral quaternions, that is the set of all elements a + bi + cj + dk with a, b, c, d ∈ ℤ and where i, j and k together with the number 1 are the four units of the system of quaternions.

In the following we use the notation and terminology of [6] and [7]. If S is an inverse semigroup, then Es denotes the semilattice of idempotents of S. If a is any element of the inverse semigroup, then a−1 denotes the inverse of a in S. An inverse subsemigroup S of an inverse semigroup S′ is self-conjugate in S′ if for all x ∈ S′,x−1Sx ⊆ S; if this is the case, S′ is called a conjugate extension of S. An inverse subsemigroup S of S′ is said to be a full inverse subsemigroup of S′ if Es = Es′. If S is a full self-conjugate inverse subsemigroup of the inverse semigroup S′, then S is called a normal inverse subsemigroup of S′, or, S′ is called a normal extension of S.

In this paper we characterize those locally convex lattices which can be represented as dense sublatices containing 1 in a space C(X) and whose topologies can be recognized as topologies of uniform convergence on selections of compact subsets of X. Here C(X) is the lattice of continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular space X. The class of such locally convex lattices includes the classical order unit spaces investigated by Kakutani [3], arbitrary products of order unit spaces, for example ∏ L∞ and the order partition spaces studied in [1].

Recently there have appeared papers ([7], [8]; also see [9]) in which integral equations with kernels involving the confluent hypergeometric function

have been studied. These equations are mainly Volterra equations of the first kind except that they have infinite domain (0, ∞). The rest are of the related type with integrals over (x, ∞) instead of (0, x); and all are convolution equations.

Let X be a finite set and let (X) be the full transformation semigroup on X, i.e. the set of all mappings from X into X, the semigroup operation being composition of mappings. This paper aims to characterize those elements of (X) which have square roots. An easily verifiable necessary condition, that of being quasi-square, is found in Theorem 2, and in Theorems 4 and 5 we find necessary and sufficient conditions for certain special elements of (X). The property of being compatibly amenable is shown in Theorem 7 to be equivalent for all elements of (X) to the possession of a square root.

Given a polynomially bounded multisequence {fm}, where m = (m1, …, mk) ∈ ℤk, we will consider 2k power series in exp(iz1), …, exp(izk), each representing a holomorphic function within its domain of convergence. We will consider this same multisequence as a linear functional on a class of functions defined on the k-dimensional torus by a Fourier series, , with the proper convergence criteria. We shall discuss the relationships that exist between the linear functional properties of the multisequence and the analytic continuation of the holomorphic functions. With this approach we show that a necessary and sufficient condition that the multisequence be given by a polynomial is that each of the power series represents, up to a unit factor, the same function that is entire in the variables

We say that a ring R has bounded index if there is a positive integer n such that an = 0 for each nilpotent element a of R. If n is the least such integer we say R has index n. For example, any semiprime right Goldie ring has bounded index, and so does any semiprime ring satisfying a polynomial identity [10, Theorem 10.8.2]. This paper is mainly concerned with the maximal (right) quotient ring Q of a semiprime ring R with bounded index. Several special cases of this situation have already received attention in the literature. If R satisfies a polynomial identity [1], or if every nonzero right ideal of R contains a nonzero idempotent [18] then it is known that Q is a finite direct product of matrix rings over strongly regular self-injective rings, the size of the matrices being bounded by the index of R. On the other hand if R is reduced (that is, has index 1) then Q is a direct product of a strongly regular self-injective ring and a biregular right self-injective ring of type III ([2] and [15]; the terminology is explained in [6]). We prove the following generalization of these results (see Theorems 9 and 11).

In the general theory of locally convex spaces, the idea of inductive limit is pervasive, with quotient spaces and the less obvious notion of direct sum being among the instances. Bornological spaces provide another important example. As is well known (cf. [7]), a Hausdorff locally convex space E is bornological if, and only if, E is an inductive limit of normed vector spaces. Going even further in this direction, a complete Hausdorff bornological space is an inductive limit of Banach spaces.

Altman [1] showed that Riesz-Schauder theory remains valid for a completely continuous linear operator on a locally convex Hausdorflf topological vector space over the complex field. In a later paper [2], he proved an analogue of the Aronszajn-Smith result; specifically, he showed that such an operator possesses a proper closed invariant subspace. The purpose of this paper is to show that Ringrose's theory of superdiagonal forms for compact linear operators [3] can be generalized to the case of a completely continuous linear operator on a locally convex Hausdorff topological vector space over the complex field. However, the proof given in [3] requires considerable modification.

In this paper we shall indicate how to generalise the concept of a cofinite group (see [7]). We recall that any residually finite group can be made into a topological group by taking as a basis of neighbourhoods of the identity precisely the normal subgroups of finite index. The class of compact cofinite groups is then easily seen to be the class of profinite groups, where a group is profinite if and only if it is an inverse limit of finite groups. It turns out that every cofinite group can be embedded as a dense subgroup of a profinite group. This has important consequences for the class of countable locally finite-soluble groups with finite Sylow p-subgroups for all primes p, as shown in [7] and [14].

The purpose of this note is to present a unified treatment of the material contained in Chapter 10 of [2] on roots and logarithms of prespectral operators. Our main result gives a sufficient condition for an analytic function of a prespectral operator of class Γ to be prespectral of class Γ. A result in the opposite direction for spectral operators has been obtained by Apostol [1]. Terminology and notation in this paper are as in [2].
