We develop an essentially algebraic method to study biharmonic curves into an implicit surface. Although our method is rather general, it is especially suitable to study curves in surfaces defined by a polynomial equation: In particular, we use it to give a complete classification of biharmonic curves in real quadrics of the three-dimensional Euclidean space.

A mixed quasi-étale quotient is the quotient of the product of a curve of genus at least 2 with itself by the action of a group which exchanges the two factors and acts freely outside a finite subset. A mixed quasi-étale surface is the minimal resolution of its singularities. We produce an algorithm computing all mixed quasi-étale surfaces with given geometric genus, irregularity and self-intersection of the canonical class. We prove that all irregular mixed quasi-étale surfaces of general type are minimal. As an application, we classify all irregular mixed quasi-étale surfaces of general type with genus equal to the irregularity, and all the regular ones with K2 > 0, thus constructing new examples of surfaces of general type with χ = 1. We mention the first example of a minimal surface of general type with pg = q = 1 and Albanese fibre of genus bigger than K2.

We show that two metacyclic groups of the following types are isomorphic if they have the same character tables: (i) split metacyclic groups, (ii) the metacyclic p-groups and (iii) the metacyclic {p, q}-groups, where p, q are odd primes.

We define a pseudometric on the set of all unbounded subsets of a metric space. The Kolmogorov quotient of this pseudometric space is a complete metric space. The definition of the pseudometric is guided by the principle that two unbounded subsets have distance 0 whenever they stay sublinearly close. Based on this pseudometric we introduce and study a general concept of boundaries of metric spaces. Such a boundary is the closure of a subset in the Kolmogorov quotient determined by an arbitrarily chosen family of unbounded subsets. Our interest lies in those boundaries which we get by choosing unbounded cyclic sub(semi)groups of a finitely generated group (or more general of a compactly generated, locally compact Hausdorff group). We show that these boundaries are quasi-isometric invariants and determine them in the case of nilpotent groups as a disjoint union of certain spheres (or projective spaces). In addition we apply this concept to vertex-transitive graphs with polynomial growth and to random walks on nilpotent groups.

The following Chen's bi-harmonic conjecture made in 1991 is well-known and stays open: The only bi-harmonic submanifolds of Euclidean spaces are the minimal ones. In this paper, we prove that the bi-harmonic conjecture is true for bi-harmonic hypersurfaces with three distinct principal curvatures of a Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension.

Let G be a finite p-solvable group and P a Sylow p-subgroup of G. Suppose that $\gamma_{\ell (p-1)}(P)\subseteq \gamma_r(P)^{p^s}$ for ℓ(p−1) < r + s(p − 1), then the p-length is bounded by a function depending on ℓ.

We consider higher secant varieties to Veronese varieties. Most points on the rth secant variety are represented by a finite scheme of length r contained in the Veronese variety – in fact, for a general point, the scheme is just a union of r distinct points. A modern way to phrase it is: the smoothable rank is equal to the border rank for most polynomials. This property is very useful for studying secant varieties, especially, whenever the smoothable rank is equal to the border rank for all points of the secant variety in question. In this note, we investigate those special points for which the smoothable rank is not equal to the border rank. In particular, we show an explicit example of a cubic in five variables with border rank 5 and smoothable rank 6. We also prove that all cubics in at most four variables have the smoothable rank equal to the border rank.

Given the pair (P, η) of (0,2) tensors, where η defines a volume element, we consider a new variational problem varying η only. We then have Einstein metrics and slant immersions as critical points of the 1st variation. We may characterize Ricci flat metrics and Lagrangian submanifolds as stable critical points of our variational problem.

We give several algorithms for finitely generated subgroups of the modular group PSL2(ℤ) given by sets of generators. First, we present an algorithm to check whether a finitely generated subgroup H has finite index in the full modular group. Then we discuss how to parametrise the right cosets of H in PSL2(ℤ), whether the index is finite or not. Further, we explain how an element in H can be written as a word in a given set of generators of H.

Any singular level of a completely integrable system (c.i.s.) with non-degenerate singularities has a singular affine structure. We shall show how to construct a simple c.i.s. around the level, having the above affine structure. The cotangent bundle of the desingularized level is used to perform the construction, and the c.i.s. obtained looks like the simplest one associated to the affine structure. This method of construction is used to provide several examples of c.i.s. with different kinds of non-degenerate singularities.

We apply appropriate maximum principles in order to obtain characterization results concerning complete linear Weingarten hypersurfaces with bounded mean curvature in the hyperbolic space. By supposing a suitable restriction on the norm of the traceless part of the second fundamental form, we show that such a hypersurface must be either totally umbilical or isometric to a hyperbolic cylinder, when its scalar curvature is positive, or to a spherical cylinder, when its scalar curvature is negative. Related to the compact case, we also establish a rigidity result.

As a special case of fully invariant subgroups, strongly invariant subgroups are introduced and studied for Abelian groups.

Inspired by Gowers' seminal paper (W. T. Gowers, Comb. Probab. Comput.17(3) (2008), 363–387, we will investigate quasi-randomness for profinite groups. We will obtain bounds for the minimal degree of non-trivial representations of SLk(ℤ/(pnℤ)) and Sp2k(ℤ/(pnℤ)). Our method also delivers a lower bound for the minimal degree of a faithful representation of these groups. Using the suitable machinery from functional analysis, we establish exponential lower and upper bounds for the supremal measure of a product-free measurable subset of the profinite groups SLk(ℤp) and Sp2k(ℤp). We also obtain analogous bounds for a special subgroup of the automorphism group of a regular tree.

Let R be a complete intersection ring, and let M and N be R-modules. It is shown that the vanishing of ExtiR(M, N) for a certain number of consecutive values of i starting at n forces the complete intersection dimension of M to be at most n–1. We also estimate the complete intersection dimension of M*, the dual of M, in terms of vanishing of cohomology modules, ExtiR(M,N).

The purpose of this paper is a further investigation on the 2-nilpotent multiplier, $\mathcal{M}$(2)(G), when G is a non-abelian p-group. Furthermore, taking G in the class of extra-special p-groups, we will get the explicit structure of $\mathcal{M}$(2)(G) and will classify 2-capable groups in that class.

This paper is devoted to determine the connectedness of the branch loci of the moduli space of non-orientable unbordered Klein surfaces. We obtain a result similar to Nielsen's in order to determine topological conjugacy of automorphisms of prime order on such surfaces. Using this result we prove that the branch locus is connected for surfaces of topological genus 4 and 5.

In this paper, we first deduce a formula of S-curvature of homogeneous Finsler spaces in terms of Killing vector fields. Then we prove that a homogeneous Finsler space has isotropic S-curvature if and only if it has vanishing S-curvature. In the special case that the homogeneous Finsler space is a Randers space, we give an explicit formula which coincides with the previous formula obtained by the second author using other methods.

Given a finitely generated module over a commutative noetherian ring that satisfies certain reflexivity conditions, we show how failure of the semidualizing property for the module manifests in a disconnection of the prime spectrum of the ring.
