Among the many beautiful fossils from the Silurian strata of Bohemia, obtained by M. J. Barrande, there have been discovered numerous detached spines, measuring from six seven inches in length, which, from their resembalance to the genus Leptocheles of M'Coy, have received the MS. name of Leptocheles Bohemicus (Barr).

The Rayfield-Gona granite of the Jos Plateau, Nigeria, formerly regarded as an independent intrusive body, is now thought to be a roof facies of the Ngell granite. This explains several phenomena, such as the gradational contact between the two, and the distinctive mineral assemblage of the former.

This cast indicates a fusiform turrited shell adorned by discontinuous varices; the spire is wanting; it also shows that the shell was transversely ribbed and corrugated; the outer lip was strongly plicato-dentate internally; the aperture rather small; canal moderately long.

The following account of the Proboscidea, by Prof. E. D. Cope, appeared in a recent number of the “American Naturalist” and is so interesting, that we venture to give the more important part in full, and some few of the illustrations.—Edit. Geol. Mag.

Matherella (?) acuticostata sp. nov. is described from the Lower Ordovician of Trefor, near Bryngwran, in mid Anglesey.

The great copper-mining district of Southern Spain and Portugal has been studied by several eminent geologists, and the problems presented in the geology of the field and of its ore-deposits have given rise to conflicting opinions. The three most debated points have been the origin of the ore-deposits, the relations of the igneous rocks, and the age of the sedimentary formations. The present paper, the field work for which was carried out during the last summer season, deals in the main with the two latter points, and the writer takes this opportunity of expressing his indebtedness to Professor W. W. Watts and to Dr. C. G. Cullis for their advice and suggestions during the subsequent petrological studies at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London.

Being prevented by other work from continuing at present my work on the Danian (Laramie) Dinosaurs of Transylvania, I wish briefly to draw attention to the fact that the Upper Cretaceous Titanosaurus, as known from the Montagne Noire in France and from the Cretaceous formation of Argentina, and perhaps also from East Africa (as already pointed out by Fraas), has nothing to do with the Sauropoda, but belongs to the Trachodontid Orthopods, as proved by the abundant Transylvanian material at my disposal.

The mountain mass known as the Tarntaler Köpfe, situated about 20 kilometres south-east of Innsbruck, is distinctly isolated from other high ground in the vicinity. The peaks rise to heights approaching 2900 metres above sea-level. The geologic features above the level of 2000 metres are of special interest. The adjacent country is occupied by crystalline phyllites, chiefly displayed on the north, and highly foliated calcareous schists developed mostly on the south of the mountain.

The rocks of this series form an interrupted belt along the southern border of the Highlands from Stonehaven on the east to the island of Arran on the west, and they appear again on a more extensive scale in Ireland. In Scotland the series consists of cherts or jaspers and shales, sometimes associated with limestones and with some peculiar igneous rocks. The age of the series has been for years a matter of controversy. Many geologists have held that these rocks are of pre-Cambrian age, but Messrs. Peach & Horne in their volume on The Silurian Rocks of Britain (Mem. Geol. Surv., 1899) remarked on the close resemblance of the rocks of this belt to some of the Arenig rocks in the Southern Uplands of Scotland, and the belt has been marked on the Geological Survey maps as doubtfully Lower Silurian.

In the northwestern part of the Wessex Basin of southern England, interpretation of seismic reflection and recently released borehole data provides detailed information of the major unconformity at the base of the sedimentary-fill. Seismic mapping of the top of Variscan basement reveals a concealed, faulted, dome-like Palaeozoic basement culmination or structural ‘high’ lying within the larger Cranborne–Fordingbridge High, southwest of Shaftesbury. This structure profoundly affected the deposition of the overlying Permo-Triassic sequence. The culmination, composed of Carboniferous Limestone, lies to the south of northwards-throwing, basement-controlled, syn-sedimentary faults which form the southern margin of the Mere Basin. In this area, the main phase of faulting occurred during Permo-Triassic times with little or no faulting during the Jurassic. Triassic strata onlap the basement culmination which was overstepped and finally submerged in late Triassic times. The structure has much in common with the basement ‘highs’ at Bruton and in the Mendips and provides further evidence for the existence of such features close to the main lines of Mesozoic faulting within the Wessex Basin. It is considered that differential subsidence related to syn-depositional normal faulting was the dominant factor controlling development of the highs. The simple infilling of a pre-existing post-orogenic topography played a minor role.

In a previous paper I urged that the conclusions there arrived at necessitated certain corollaries which are not universally accepted, and to which I hoped to call attention in the future. One of these I now venture to shortly discuss.

We now come to the second o rder of the Trilobita, which Beecher (loc. cit.) calls the Opisthoparia. In common with the third order, the Proparia, compound paired eyes are usually present, and these are invariably situated on the free cheeks, which form part of the dorsal surface of the head-shield.
