Among the many beautiful fossils from the Silurian strata of Bohemia, obtained by M. J. Barrande, there have been discovered numerous detached spines, measuring from six seven inches in length, which, from their resembalance to the genus Leptocheles of M'Coy, have received the MS. name of Leptocheles Bohemicus (Barr).

This cast indicates a fusiform turrited shell adorned by discontinuous varices; the spire is wanting; it also shows that the shell was transversely ribbed and corrugated; the outer lip was strongly plicato-dentate internally; the aperture rather small; canal moderately long.

In a memoir which was read before the Geological Society of London in 1870, and which was published in the Proceedings of that Society and in the Malta papers, Dr. A. A. Caruana makes mention of a portion of a rib and of a lower jaw of a mammal which were obtained from the Globigerina Limestone at El Kbajer, near Kolla el Baida, in the island of Gozo; and after referring to the fact that no Carnivora had, up to that date, been found in the Maltese Islands, he described the El Kbajer fossils as being “a portion of the lower jaw of a Hyæna with several teeth in situ.”

Among instances of the bodily deformation of rocks by lateral pressure, the case of the phyllade aimantifère of Monthermé is well known. By its strong cleavage this rock gives evidence of considerable lateral compression. Professor Renard has shown that prior to this compression the magnetite crystals already existed in the rock, and were surrounded by a coating of chlorite. The crystals yielded to the pressure much less readily than their matrix, and the latter, having already a firm consistence, became separated from the crystals, carrying the chlorite with it, and was displaced along the planes which are now cleavage-planes, that is, in a direction at right angles to that of the pressure.

In the March number of the Geological Magazine, Mr. A. H. Green observes that it is difficult to account for the supply of salts to the Permian Sea. For the iron, he calls in the aid of mineral springs produced by volcanic action; but for the lime and magnesia, streams flowing into the sea holding in solution bicarbonate of lime and sulphate of magnesia.

The National Museum of Wales has not existed, as a working institution, long enough to have accumulated an extensive series of type and figured fossils, but since recent developments have rendered available for reference geological collections that were hitherto packed in store rooms, it is felt that the time is opportune for the publication of a note concerning the geological material which the Museum possesses, with special reference to the specimens that have been described or figured.

The granite of the Dicq Rock is traversed by several veins of fine grained aplogranite. These in turn are cut by a large dolerite dyke, which has been intruded into a brecciated fault zone within the granite. Three large blocks of granite occur within the dolerite; these originally formed the southern boundary of the fault. The petrography of these rocks, and the influence of the micro-breccia upon the textures found in the marginal and central part of the dolerite, are considered in detail.

As none of the figures hitherto given of the genus Eophyton show either its internal structure, or articulations of its stems, and as I am in possession of a specimen from the Lower Arenig Rocks, of Ramsey Island, near St. David's, which resembles in some respects the Eophyton Linnœanum Torell, but which shows both articulations of the stem, and an internal vascular structure, a description of the species may probably be useful, and may tend to elucidate the true nature of Eophyton, concerning which so much doubt seems to exist at present.

The interesting note by Mr. Strahan in the Geol. Mag. for September, 1887, on explosive slickensides, reminded me of some similar phenomena which were not of unfrequent occurrence near Dent Head and Ribble Head in Yorkshire.

In the limestone quarry from which the black marble of Dent is procured the workmen found that, when they were quarrying the lower beds and struck the rock with a pick or bar, fragments flew up into the air with greater force than, could be due to their blow and in an unexpected direction.

The Swedish Magellanic Expedition spent some time in the Falkland Islands before proceeding to Tierra del Fuego, where important work is being carried on. The writer utilised his stay in the Falklands to study the geology and collect fossils. The following is a brief note of the work there.

Several major tholeiitic (e.g. the Skaergaard intrusion) and alkaline (e.g. the Kangerlussuaq Syenite) intrusive complexes of the North Atlantic Large Igneous Province are exposed along the Kangerlussuaq Fjord in East Greenland. The Kærven Complex forms a satellite intrusion to the Kangerlussuaq Syenite and includes early tholeiitic gabbros and a series of cross-cutting alkaline intrusions ranging from monzonite to alkali granite. The alkaline intrusions cut the gabbros, and are cut by the outer nordmarkite zone of the Kangerlussuaq Syenite. This study presents the first U–Pb zircon ages from the alkaline units of the Kærven Complex. Fourteen multi-grain zircon fractions have been analysed by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). Absolute age differences could not be resolved between the different units, suggesting a relatively rapid succession of intrusions between c. 53.5 and 53.3 Ma. Our compilation of precise radiometric age data shows that most of the alkaline magmatism in the Kangerlussuaq Fjord occurred prior to 50 Ma. Moreover, pre-50 Ma alkaline intrusions and lavas show a SSE-younging trend, which is interpreted as the track of the Iceland hotspot during the rift-to-drift transition of the North Atlantic.

When we speak of Newfoundland, we speak of England's oldest and yet almost unknown Colony. When we look at its rocks, we shall find that they also are old, and from the metamorphisms and contortions they have suffered are almost unrecognizable. The first geologist who journeyed round the rugged shores which gird the island, and across the marshes and thickets which cover its interior, was the indefatigable Jukes.

The mineral riebeckite was first discovered by Professor T. G. Bonney in 1882, who, in a paper to the Royal Society describing a series of rock-specimens from the island of Socotra, noticed the occurrence in a granite of a mineral which, though presenting characters common to the hornblende group, he referred doubtfully to tourmaline.

On first thoughts, it may seems that the lowest group of vertebrates, of all the divisions comprised in the animal kingdom, might be most easily described, and its zoological limits defined; but, on examination, the fishes prove to be most curiously linked to the invertebrata below and the amphibian reptiles above. In fact, it is not easy to draw the lines positively between them, and to say where the true vertebrates begin, or where the piscine characters are merged in the reptilian. It is proposed to refer to some of the most aberrant forms of living fish and their fossil affinities; then, briefly passing in review the distribution of the various families in geological time, to see how far descent with modification is traceable in this class of vertebrates.

The Aru Archipelago consists of a group of some eighty low islands which rise from the shallow sea between western New Guinea and Australia. They have been interpreted by Wichmann (1887, pp. 120–1) as the south-eastern members of an arc, to which he assigned also the Sula, Obi, and Misool Islands, and part of the south-western coast of New Guinea. This arc he regarded as the easternmost of three arcs at the eastern end of the Banda Sea. This view has been adopted, amongst others, by Koto (1899, p. 97, pl. i). The Aru Islands consist, according to the account in Verbeek's “Molukken Verslag” (1908, pp. 9, 464–5, fig. 420), of an almost horizontal limestone plateau, which has been broken by uplift into more than eighty pieces.

THERE has been considerable uncertainty about the true characters of the species Illaenus bowmanni Salter, and many foreign palaeontologists have consequently found it difficult to institute a close comparison of it with other species and have suspected its composite nature. As Holm and Warburg have remarked, the species is badly characterized, and some important critical features, such as the shape of the caudal fascia, are ill-defined or not clearly described in the definitions or well represented in the figures. The poorness of the specimens is largely accountable for these omissions. A recent detailed investigation which the author has been enabled to make of the specimens used by Salter, Portlock, and McCoy in drawing up a definition of the species, together with the examination of many other specimens ascribed to it from the original and other localities, throws some useful light on the subject and helps to clear up some of the obscure points, but it also shows that most of the earlier and current synonymies and references which have been published from time to time are untrustworthy and inaccurate.
