Cancer is a disease that can cause traumatic experiences and disrupt the balance of life in individuals. The development of resilience in individuals is important in adapting to the cancer process and the difficulties that the process may bring.

To investigate the effectiveness of interventions for the psychological resilience of individuals with cancer.

The findings of randomized controlled trials related to interventions to effect resilience of individuals with cancer were included. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software was used to analyze the data. Hedges’ g and 95% confidence intervals were computed to estimate the effect. Additionally, funnel plots were created to assess publication bias. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis was used.

The eight studies that demonstrated the effect of the interventions on resilience of individuals with cancer were heterogeneous. The effect size was 2.649 (95% CI = 1.325 - 3.973), was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Results of the subgroup analysis showed that the effects of sample size, cancer type, lenght of treatment, duration of intervention and gender were significant. According to the lenght of treatment studies lasting >90 min and >10 weeks were less significant impact on resilience. Studies in which the sample consisted of more than 100 participants, conducted participants with mixed type of cancer and the sample consisted of participants from both genders demonstrated statistically significant effects on resilience.

This study showed that supportive interventions are crucial in developping psychological resilience among individuals with cancer. However, the findings also underscore the need for further research.

Haloperidol is a first generation, high potency, low cost and widely used antipsychotic. There are inconsistencies in the literature about comparison of effectiveness between long-acting injectable haloperidol (HDLAI) with oral haloperidol (OH), as well as the combined use of both formulations (HDLAI+OH).

To verify whether HDLAI reduces the number of emergency visits and hospitalizations when compared to oral OH, or in combination therapy HDLAI+OH.

Retrospective observational study on a Psychiatric Emergency department, including patients aged 18 to 60 years, both genders, under continuous treatment for at least 5 months with Haloperidol for any psychiatric illness, divided into 3 groups of patients (HDLAI, OH, HDLAI+OH). Dependent variables: visits and admissions. Independent variables: sex and age. Data were checked for normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test) and homoscedasticity (Bartlett test). For comparison of average number of visits and hospitalizations of patients Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn’s multiple comparison test was used. It was considered statistically significant if p < 0.05. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Maringá State University.

No statistical difference between groups HDLAI and OH was found. The HDLAI+OH group presented higher means of emergency visits and hospitalizations with statistical significance.

It suggests the use of HDLAI can be considered an alternative as effective as oral intake. Prolonged use of associated HDLAI and oral supplementation leads to worst outcomes.

Antidepressant-induced galactorrhea and increases in prolactin levels have been sporadically reported among SSRI-related side effects.

Current rapport presents a case of 39 y.o. female who developed several adverse effects on paroxetine - including galactorrhoea - which improved on discontinuation of the drug.

Case discussion of 39-year old woman who was treated with paroxetine for her panic disorder and developed galactorrhoea with hyperprolactinemia that resolved upon discontinuation of the drug. Additionally, authors performed the literature search using PubMed and Embase to review the similar cases and used PDSP Database to assess the latest pharmacodynamic (PD) properties of paroxetine and other SSRI’s.

Literature review (1966–2020) revealed 24 prior published case reports of SSRI-induced galactorrhea in users of paroxetine (n=4), escitalopram (n=4), sertraline (n=2), citalopram (n=2), fluoxetine (n=3), fluvoxamine (n=2) and other non-assessable reports (n=7). Elevated prolactin levels were mostly observed with paroxetine and escitalopram and rarely with fluoxetine, fluvoxamine and sertraline. PD-assessment showed the highest binding affinity of paroxetine and escitalopram to SERT (kPi = 0.07-0.2 and 0.8-1.1 nmol/L respectively) compared to other SSRI’s, in absence of other relevant PD-properties

Increasing body of evidence shows that galactorrhea does occur among paroxetine female users. Pharmacodynamic mechanism of action is poorly understood but given the modern insights in relationship in serotonin and dopamine circuits, we suggest that strong SERT inhibitory properties of paroxetine might lead to a tonic suppressive influence on dopamine neurotransmission. This physiological link may explain an increase in prolactin levels through dopamine depletion in the tuberoinfundibular pathway.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the world. Studies have shown that the frequency of its use in schizophrenic patients is significantly higher than in the general population,which hinders both treatment strategies and the efficacy of antipsychotics.

The objectives of our study are to highlight the prevalence of smoking in this population,to assess their nicotine dependence as well as to support the difficulties of their management.

We conducted a cross-sectional study of 92 male patients, hospitalized at Ar-razi Hospital in Salé, using the Fagerström scale, associated with a questionnaire that included age, marital status, educational level, somatic comorbidities, current treatment, other substances used, withdrawal attempts, age of first cigarette, family history of smoking, and finally,number of cigarettes per day before and after psychiatric diagnosis.

All our patients were male,the average age was 31 years, 84.8% of our patients were single, 73.9% were without a profession, only 23.9% were under classic neuroleptics while 4.3% were under Clozapine, the most of our patients were also using Cannabis,52.2% attempted a withdrawal, with an average duration of 6 months.69.6% of our patients had a family history of smoking and only 21.7% had somatic comorbidities.The average daily consumption was 12 cigarettes per day before the onset of psychiatric symptoms, rising to 18 cigarettes per day after the psychiatric diagnosis.

The frequency of smoking in schizophrenic patients is high. Unfortunately, these patients remain poorly aware of the harms of smoking, hence the need to integrate a smoking control strategy into the management of schizophrenia.

An impairment of anticipation processes is considered as a common deficiency in schizophrenia (Kveraga et al., 2007), however its neural mechanisms remain poorly understood.

The aim of the study was to analyze CNV-like slow negative waves during the pre-target stimuli waiting period in patients with the first episode of the disease.

32-channels EEGs during “Go / No go delay” saccadic paradigm have been recorded in 16 young male patients with illness duration less than 2 years and 18 age and sex matched healthy subjects. The delay period between fixation and target (“Go” or “No go”) visual stimulus was 2800-3000 ms. The early and late components of CNV - like slow negative waves (PMN1 and 2) have been studied in 1 sec pre-stimulus interval of delay period.

As compared to norm, the patients showed significantly increased latencies of saccades to correctly discriminated stimuli and higher percent of “errors saccades”. The amplitudes of No go-PMN1 and Go-PMN2 waves were also increased in patients. The amplitude foci of these waves were diffusely distributed in patients and mostly localized in frontal leads in norm.

The findings assume some violation of anticipation for action (motor or inhibitory response) processes as well as an increase of presumably cortical activation during stimulus anticipation in the “Go/No go delay” saccadic paradigm in the early stage of schizophrenia.

Dyskinesias are motor disorders that occur as a side effect to treatment with typical and less frequently with atypical antipsychotic drugs. They are more frequents in child population. Treatment usually consists of decrease the dose of drug or replace it with a better profile tolerability antipsychotic. Clozapine is an antipsychotic drug indicated as second-generation treatment of motor disorders that appear as side effects to treatment with neuroleptics.

Demonstrate the efficacy and tolerability of clozapine in the treatment of dyskinesias in childhood.

The patient 12 year-old boy, has episodes of psychomotor agitation once a month. This will alternate with quiet moments in which dyskinetic movements are observed in upper limbs, without being able to detect any type triggering environmental factor. Personal history: hydrocele, diagnosed at 8 years becomes neurodevelopmental disorder considered. Neurosurgery tracking for Subarachnoid cyst. Psychopathological examination: Child presents psychomotor restlessness, disruptive behavior, impairments in communication, movement disorder, stereotypies and dyskinetic movements in shoulder and neck.

In the patient suffering from an autistic disorder, stereotypies and other motor symptoms were observed, the predominant and most relevant being dyskinetic movements in the shoulder and neck, which appeared one month after starting treatment with risperidone and worsening psychomotor skills. Treatment of dyskinesia with clozapine improved the motor symptoms presented by the patient.

Clozapine should be the treatment of choice in the event of dyskinesias as a secondary effect to other antipsychotic treatments, proving effective in controlling them as well as well tolerated in both adults and children.

Clinical case about a 62 year old patient, diagnosed with mixed anxiety-depressive disorder. In current treatment with Paroxetine, Clorazepate and Trazodone. She presents low spirits secondary to a neurological process (stroke + amyloid angiopathy+ epilepsy+ cognitive impairment) and difficulties in performing daily activities. Her daughter reports that she is totally dependent, she spends the whole day in bed. On examination we observe a dull mood, without emotional reactivity. Lack of motivation. Psychomotor slowness.Significant cognitive impairment with difficulties in performing daily activities. Mnesic faults.

Spectacular improvement in mood and cognitive deficit. The family reports that after 5 days they noticed the change. They find her more lively, she has returned to doing housework and is autonomous for day-to-day life. She has regained her memory and performed calculation exercises on a daily. The patient says that she has returned to being her usual self, “before I felt like a mummy and now I have finally woken up, it seems like a miracle”.

It has improved much with change of antidepressant, from paroxetine to vortioxetine in patient who show in cranial MRI: New-onset lesion in the right frontal lobe attributable and subarachnoid hemorrhage located in convex furrows ,radiological findings in favor of amyloid angiopathy

Resilience has attracted much attention, not least since the pandemic. It is characterised by a person’s ability to bounce back from adversity. Although there is no exact definition of what adversity means, it assumes that the individual is aware of the event. Here, we would like to challenge this preconception by putting forward a case of an individual who shows remarkable resilience without being aware of his disadvantages.

We present a case of a fully-functioning middle-aged man with corpus callosum agenesis of which he has been unaware. We sought to demonstrate that personality traits which have been associated with resilience may not necessarily be characteristic of a resilient individual.

T.C. is a 44-year-old individual who enrolled as a healthy participant in a research study at the University of Cambridge, which involved cognitive and personality assessments and a structural brain scan.

T.C.’s psychological profile portrayed a well-balanced man who had attained a high level of education, stable employment, a healthy personal life and good community integration. T.C.’s cognitive performance fell well within normal ranges, but was superior in terms of self-control, as measured by the stop-signal task. To our surprise, he scored below-average on questionnaires of resilience and sense of coherence beliefs and reported subclinical tendencies of obsessive-compulsive behaviours.

Resilience does not require awareness of adversity. Our case report shows that resilience may present itself fairly normally and may go unrecognised in daily life. Hardship should not be limited to traumatic events but also include brain abnormality.

Sexual dysfunction is a quite common side effect of antidepressant treatment. Sexual side effects may affect the person’s adherence to treatment, quality of life, and relations. Premature ejaculation is rarely seen as an adverse effect of antidepressant drugs.

We aimed to present a clinical case of a 53-year-old man who developed painful ejaculation with the use of venlafaxine.

We made a narrative literature search in Pubmed and Google scholar with the terms of painful ejaculation induced by venlafaxine and antidepressant treatment.

A 53-year-old man was admitted to the psychiatric outpatient unit with symptoms of anhedonia, decreased sleep, decreased self-esteem for the last month. The patient was diagnosed with depression and he started to take 37,5 mg venlafaxine per day. After one month, when venlafaxine dose was increased to 75mg and the patient started to complain of painful ejaculation. The pain continued from the beginning to the end of the ejaculation. The pain increased more when the venlafaxine dose increased to 150mg per day. The patient was consulted at the urology clinic. The urological examination, laboratory tests (direct microscopic examination of the urethral discharge and urethral culture), and serum prostate-specific antigen levels were normal. No pathology was found in uroflowmetry and ultrasonography of the urinary system. The dose of venlafaxine decreased and the patient started to take 20 mg of fluoxetine per day. His symptoms disappeared after venlafaxine was discontinued.

To literature, this is the second presentation of painful ejaculation observed during the use of venlafaxine.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is usually diagnosed in adulthood, around childbearing age. Research has shown that BD has deleterious effects on pregnant women and birth outcomes. However, few nationwide studies using administrative data have approached this at-risk population focusing specifically on childbirth.

This study aims to characterize hospitalizations of women with BD in the peripartum period regarding sociodemographic and clinical variables and to investigate the impact BD has on hospitalization outcomes.

An observational retrospective study will be performed using an administrative database that comprises routinely collected hospitalization data from all mainland Portuguese public hospitals. International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes will be used to identify all women’s admissions for childbirth purposes (V27.X) and codes 296.XX (except 296.2X, 296.3X, 296.9X) will be used to ascertain BD. Episodes will be assigned to one of two mutually exclusive groups (with vs without BD). Multivariate methods will be used to compare both groups concerning key variables and outcomes. This work will comply with the RECORD statement recommendations.

Descriptive and analytical statistics will be conducted in order to describe and characterize this group of patients. Results will be presented as crude and adjusted odds ratio quantifying the risk associated with BD in pregnancy, childbirth and hospitalization outcomes. Findings will be disseminated via publication in peer-reviewed journals.

With this nationwide analysis, we expect to contribute to a better understanding of the demographic and clinical profile of pregnant women with BD and to encourage timely medical and psychological interventions during gestation and childbirth.

Difficulties in mentalizing (i.e., the ability to reflect on self and others’ internal mental states, operationalized as reflective functioning [RF]; Fonagy et al., 2012) have been associated with psychological symptoms (Luyten et al., 2020), including somatic symptoms (Bizzi et al., 2019). Therefore, the assessment of its dimensions may be clinically relevant for young patients with somatic symptoms, as with Primary Headache (PH), representing one of the most common somatic complaints in children and adolescents.

This study aimed to assess RF with a multi-method approach, exploring its relation with somatic symptoms.

48 adolescents diagnosed with PH (Mage=14.83, SD=2.81; 67% females) were recruited from an Italian Child Neuropsychiatry Clinic. RF was measured both through the Child and Adolescent Reflective Functioning (CRFS) applied to the Child Attachment Interview transcripts and the self-report Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ), while the Children’s Somatization Inventory (CSI-24) was used to measure the perceived severity of somatic symptoms.

Different relations with somatic symptoms depended on the method used to evaluate RF: no significant correlations were found with the CRFS subscales (General, Other, Self), while a negative significant correlation was found with the RFQ subscale Certainty about mental states (RFQ_C) (r=-.46, p=.016). All subscales of CRFS were negatively correlated with RFQ_C (p=.05), but not with the other RFQ subscale (Uncertainty about mental states; RFQ_U).

This suggests that two measures may lead to different dimensions of the same construct, thus a multi-method assessment of RF would be advisable in clinical practice.

Few studies have analyzed the psychometric profile (Homogenous/Heterogenous), established by the Wechsler scale in high intellectual potential children (HIP, IQ>130), regarding the psycho-socio-emotional characteristics.

We aimed to look at the links between the IQ-profile and the psycho-socio-emotional characteristics in HIP.

Anamnestic questionnaire and Wechsler-Intelligence-Scale for children (WISC-V) were conducted and analyzed in 58 healthy children with HIP, aged 7-to-13 years-old (mean 10y; SD 1.8). It was possible to distinguished 27 Homogenousvs 30 Heterogenous IQ-profile.

No significant difference between homogenous/heterogonous groups, FIQ was positively significantly correlated with “Reacting very little emotionally”, “Tendency to isolation”. Visual-Spatial-Index (VSI) with “Ability to adapt to new people” (r=-0.4, p=0.02), “few interests” (r=0.5, p=0.008). Verbal-Comprehension-Index (VCI) with “Reacting strongly to frustration”, “Difficulties to understand limits”, “Separation anxiety”. A significant difference between homogenous/heterogonous groups was shown regarding “few interests” with high rate in the heterogonous group (t= -2.34, p=0.023).

HIP seems to cover specific psycho-socio-emotional characteristics linked to IQ index distribution. Thus, it appears interesting to assess more the emotional and socio-cognitive field to understand these characteristics in HIP children.

Clients with Eating Disorders may be treated as inpatients (IP), day hospital (DH) or community patients (Ambu). The ITAMITED study is following to treatment termination (or end of October 2025) all new clients with EDs presenting between November 2017 and October 2020 to eight centres in Spain.

To describe to what extent initial care levels (IP, DH, Ambu) are associated with gender, age, social relationships, ED diagnosis Body Mass Index (BMI) and baseline medication.

The study is exploratory/descriptive, practice-based evidence (PBE). Consecutive new clients were approached for participation. Inclusion criteria were a diagnosis of an ED and opting in to treatment.

The only variables not showing a statistically significant relationship with level were gender (no relationship), diagnosis of bulimia and use of prescribed psychostimulant medication (which was rare). OP care was associated with older age which did not discriminate between DH and IP. Similarly, being in a relationship was associated with OP care but didn’t differentiate between DH and OP. Relationships with ED diagnosis other than AN type I were complex but significant. Relationships with AN type I, BMI and being on antipsychotics, antidepressants, anxiolytics, mood stabilisers and a catch-all category of all other medication all showed an ordered relationship IP > DH > Ambu. The most powerful relationships were with BMI and diagnosis of AN type I.

Initial level of care is associated with many factors and strongly with many of them. This will complicate the analyses of trajectories of change but reflects the heterogeneity of this client group.

Valproic acid is a psychotropic drug used for several years, due to its properties as a mood stabilizer, being considered as first-line treatment for bipolar disorder. In addition to its teratogenic potential, which prevents its recommendation for the treatment of bipolar disorder in women of childbearing age, valproic acid is associated with some side effects, such as gastrointestinal symptoms, alopecia, weight gain, tremor or hepatotoxicity. Hyperammonemia is a side effect that is little described, but relatively frequent, and may progress to variable encephalopathy.

The authors describe a clinical case of a 48-year-old female patient, hospitalized due to a manic episode, who was prescribed valproic acid, in association with lorazepam and olanzapine.

After three days on a dose of 1000mg of valproic acid, the patient began an acute condition of confusion, psychomotor retardation, temporal-spatial disorientation and ataxia. Infection, electrolyte disturbance and acute cerebral event were excluded. Noteworthy only hyperammonemia. Valproic acid was withdrawn and replaced by lithium, with the patient recovering from the confusional state two days later.

Hyperamonemic encephalopathy secondary to valproic acid was concluded. The mechanisms of valproic acid-linked hyperammonemia are not clear, although it appears to be independent of hepatotoxicity. The most studied hypotheses are related to glutamine reabsorption and serum levels carnitine in patients medicated with valproic acid.

It is essential that there is a high level of suspicion in clinicians for this secondary effect of valproic acid, in order to adequately treat the patient who presents with acute confusional conditions, not explained by other complications.

Current research suggests emotion recognition to be significantly impaired in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), whereby negative symptoms are theorised to play a crucial role. Emotion recognition deficits are assumed to be predictors of transition from clinical high risk to schizophrenia. So far, little attention has been given hereby to the subdomains of negative symptoms and recognizing the individual basic emotions.

Our study aimed to explore the relationship between the recognition of the basic emotions and each negative symptom domain.

66 patients with a SSD diagnosis were recruited at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Correlational and regression analyses to control for the covariates (age, education, sex) were conducted between the recognition of the six basic emotions (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise) using the Emotion Recognition Task of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) and the seven different subdomains of negative symptoms of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).

revealed significantly negative correlations of blunted affect with the recognition of happiness, fear, and disgust. Difficulties in abstract thinking, also correlated positively with the recognition of fear. Additionally, we found a significant positive correlation between stereotyped thinking and difficulties in abstract thinking with the response latency in emotion recognition.

Individuals with SSD and domains of negative symptoms showed specific impairments in recognizing the representation of basic emotions. A longitudinal design to make causality statements would be useful for future research. Moreover, emotion recognition should be considered for early detection and individualized treatment.

The diagnosis of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders (NPDs) in primary care can suffer from inefficiencies resulting in misdiagnoses and delayed diagnosis, limiting effective treatment options. The development of speech and language-based profiling biomarkers could aid in achieving earlier motor diagnosis for PD for instance, or more accurate diagnosis of clinically similar or late presenting NPDs.

RHAPSODY aims to investigate the feasibility of the remote administration of a battery of speech tasks in eliciting continuous narrative speech across a range of NPDs. The project also aims to determine the feasibility of using acoustic and linguistic biomarkers from speech data to support the clinical assessment and disambiguation of common NPDs

All participants (n=250) will take part in a single virtual telemedicine video conference with a researcher in which they are screened and complete a battery of speech tasks, in addition to cohort-specific screening measures. Over the following month, participants will be asked to complete a series of short, self-administered speech assessments via a smartphone application.

The speech tasks will be audio-recorded and analysed on Novoic’s technology platform. Objectives will be analysed using measures including average length of speech elicitation for speech tasks, intra- and inter-subject variance, differences in linguistic patterns, and response rates to speech assessments.

The analyses could help to identify and validate speech-derived clinical biomarkers to support clinicians in detecting and disambiguating between NPDs with heterogeneous presentations. This should further support earlier intervention, improved treatment options and improved quality of life.

Studies have shown an increasing prevalence of mental health issues in the general population during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among them, pregnant women are a specific population at particular mental risk.

The objectives of our study were to assess dysfunctional anxiety in women recovered from COVID-19 and to identify the impact of pregnancy on coronavirus-related dysfunctional anxiety.

This was a cross-sectional case-control study.

The women in the case group have been infected with Sars-Cov 2, with a benign or pauci-symptomatic clinical form, and cured for one to two months at the time of the study without any post-COVID complications. Women included in the control group have not been infected with Sars-Cov 2 .Anxiety was assessed by the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS).

In total, we recruited 30 women in the case group and 30 women in the control group.The average age of the case group was 35.8 ±6.8 years versus an average age of 35.3 ± 6.33 years in the control group. In each group, four women were pregnant (13.3%). Nearly one-third of the patients in the case group had a CAS score indicating dysfunctional anxiety probably related to coronavirus (33.3%), with a significant difference with the control group (p=0.026). In the case group, pregnancy was a risk factor for dysfunctional anxiety with p=0.036, OR=19.46 and CI95% = [1.21-314.00].

COVID-19 has a negative impact on perinatal mental health. Specific support for pregnant women is recommanded during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alcohol and cannabis use disorders are the most frequent comorbid substance use disorders (SUDs) among patients with eating disorders (EDs). EDs and SUDs involving alcohol and cannabis are independently associated with excess mortality.

To investigate the impact of comorbid alcohol use disorder (AUD) and cannabis use disorder (CUD) on mortality in anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and unspecified eating disorder (USED) compared with matched control subjects.

This retrospective cohort study was conducted using Danish nationwide registers. The risk of mortality among ED patients with/without AUD and/or CUD was compared to matched control subjects with/without AUD and/or CUD using hazard ratios (HRs).

Of the 20,759 included ED patients, 4.7% and 4.3% had AUD and CUD, respectively. The corresponding figures for the 83,036 control subjects were 1.0% (AUD) and 1.3% (CUD). ED patients without SUDs exhibited an increased risk of mortality compared to control subjects without SUDs (adjusted HR 2.9, P<.001). Mortality risk was higher among ED patients with AUD (adjusted HR 11.8, P<.001) or CUD (adjusted HR 4.6, P<.001) compared to control subjects without AUD/CUD. In addition, patients with AN, BN, and USED, who had comorbid AUD and/or CUD, exhibited an elevated risk of mortality compared to control subjects without AUD/CUD (AN: adjusted HR 11.3, P<.001; BN: adjusted HR 5.9, P<.001; USED: adjusted HR 10.9, P<.001).

Comorbid AUD and/or CUD increase mortality risk in patients with EDs. In order to reduce mortality in ED patients, prevention and treatment of AUD and CUD is important.

Racism is present in most aspects of our society, including healthcare. Differences in health outcomes, and in the quality of mental health treatment for people coming from ethnic minority groups have been demonstrated in the literature. Psychiatry trainees are required to understand the impact of structural inequalities and power differences within mental health services, and to be able to deliver clinical care that is equitable for all.

To provide psychiatry trainees with a space to reflect on unconscious racial bias in clinical work and to explore potential barriers when talking about such topics.

A Race and Equality Reflective Group for psychiatry trainees was organised as an opportunity to discuss unconscious racial bias. Due to an insufficient number of registrations, the session was cancelled. An anonymous feedback questionnaire was sent to all trainees to understand reasons behind this, and to explore potential barriers to participation. The results were analysed and were brought back to a regular Balint group for further exploration.

Twelve trainees filled in the questionnaire. The main themes identified included this topic being a sensitive issue (5; 41.7%), discomfort in trainees (5; 41.7%), insufficient time to participate (4; 33%) and timetable clash (3; 25.9%). Barriers to discussing unconscious racial bias and inequality were identified in further exploration with trainees. The tendency for groups to adopt a split position that was observed, mirrors the dynamics seen in institutional racism.

This work has highlighted the need for ongoing focused, facilitated educational spaces where these issues can be openly discussed and reflected upon.

Direct gaze is the most important mediator of social interaction and communication. Existing studies have evaluated eye movements of patients with schizophrenia by presenting stimuli using photographs or pre-recorded videos, but few directly investigated gaze avoidance in real-world situations.

To investigate the correlation between gaze avoidance and psychopathology in patients with schizophrenia through eye movement measurements in real-life interpersonal situations.

We enrolled 52 clinically stable patients with schizophrenia. Psychopathology was evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale. After presenting a visual stimulus, eye movements were measured with Tobii Pro Wearable Glasses 2, and deep learning-based emotional recognition using the residual masking network was used for neutral stimulus verification. Statistical analyses were performed using Pearson’s correlation and regression analyses.

Data of 45 participants with verified stimulus neutrality by deep learning image recognition were used for analysis. The first dwelling time was negatively correlated with the PANSS positive syndrome subscale (p=0.028), general psychopathology subscale (p=0.008), total score (p=0.008), 5-factor positive symptoms (p=0.035), and 5-factor depression/anxiety symptoms (p=0.008). The baseline-area of interest (AOI) pupil diameter change was positively correlated with PANSS 5-factor positive symptom scores (p=0.039). After adjusting for additional variables, the same items had a significant effect on the first dwelling time and baseline-AOI pupil diameter change.

Psychopathology, particularly positive symptoms, was associated with gaze avoidance and pupil diameter in patients with schizophrenia. Evaluating the characteristics of eye movements in patients with schizophrenia will enable better understanding of their symptoms.
