Transsexual adolescents frequently present psychiatric comorbidities and psychopathology among which self-injurious behaviours are prominent (Modrego Pardo et al., 2021). GAHT seems to decrease the rate of mental health problems especially in terms of anxiety, depression and hostility (Heylens et al., 2014). However the impact of exogenous cross-sex hormones on non-suicidal and suicidal self-injurious behaviours is not thoroughly understood (Claes et al., 2015).

We present the case of a transsexual boy who was first diagnosed with depression and benign self-injurious behaviours and subsequently - transsexualism.

He was prescribed a treatment with testosterone depot injections in fortnight intervals. The initiation of testosterone injections co-occurred with the switching of antidepressant drug. Self-injurious behaviours, substance abuse and suicidal attempts were observed regularly after GAHT onset – 10-14 days after a testosterone injection. The lethality and intensity of self-harm was greater than that observed before GAHT. After admission to the psychiatry unit pharmacotherapy was adjusted accordingly to presented symptoms. Remission of self-injurious behaviours followed.

The incidence of self-injury 10-14 days after the injection of depot testosterone overlaps the peak of serum testosterone levels in treated patients (O’Connor et al., 2004). Moreover, a relative serotonin deficiency in a depressed patient may be insufficient to counteract testosterone believed to be driving aggressive tendencies (Batrinos, 2012).

Since psychiatric comorbidity and psychopharmacotherapy in transsexual young population is the rule rather than the exception, careful monitoring and therapy adjustment is crucial for maintaining safety and obtaining best results (Kaltiala et al., 2020).

Mrs. HJ, 45 years old, without any somatic history, was followed for an antisocial personality with a substance use disorder. She consulted the emergency for psychomotor agitation, a fever of 39, and a rash on the face, thorax, and limbs. At the psychiatric interview, she was disoriented and very unstable. She seemed to be hallucinating.

The brain imaging and the lumbar puncture (CT scan and brain MRI) were without abnormality. The rapid test (HIV) was negative and the biological check-up showed a hyperleukocytosis at 12660 and a crp at 138. The patient was put on double antibiotic therapy.

The evolution was marked by the non-improvement of the symptomatology with the persistence of agitation. Her speech was almost absent with a refusal to answer and to execute orders. She maintained certain postures. The patient was put on 400 mg of amisulpride.

After recovery of the viral serology, the diagnosis of a measles encephalopathy was confirmed (IgM positive) and the patient improved after a few days of hospitalization and was addressed to the psychiatric outpatient clinic.

Suicide is a universal, complex, and multifaceted public health problem that is among the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. The impact of suicide affects families, communities, and societies; hence its prevention is an emerging priority for public health systems.

The current systematic review aims to investigate the efficacy of distance suicide prevention strategies implemented through synchronous technology-based interventions (i.e., any digital tool that allows interactive and immediate real-time communication conducted remotely).

The bibliographic search has been carried out in the electronic databases MEDLINE/PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Web of Science, with no restrictions on the publication period and limited to publications in English or Spanish. Two reviewers independently will conduct screenings, data extraction, risk of bias (RoB), and methodological quality assessment.

The preliminary data searches seem to support the effectiveness of providing active contact to persons who have made a suicide attempt and indicate that receiving early specialized assistance decreases the relative risk of recurrence. The reduction would be attributable to improved detection of patients at increased risk and effective referral to emergency services.

Telematics suicide prevention has been an emergent field for years, facilitated by the notably increased in acceptance and availability. Considering that distance programmes can reach affected individuals regardless of their location, it stands to reason that these interventions will be part of future suicide prevention efforts. The results will be discussed regarding (a) the effect size of the intervention outcomes and (b) the main moderators of the effectiveness found.

People who inject drugs (PWID) and opioid agonist treatment (OAT) patients have an increased hepatitis C (HCV) prevalence. Studies among these populations show promising HCV treatment results, which is essential to reach the WHO goal of eliminating HCV as a major public health threat by 2030.

To introduce psychiatrist-led HCV treatment at an OAT clinic and to investigate HCV treatment results, i.e. sustained virological response at 12 weeks post treatment (SVR12) and numbers of reinfections.

Prima Maria OAT clinic in Stockholm, provides OAT for 450 patients. The majority have a history of injection drug use. Baseline HCV prevalence (January 2018) was retrospectively investigated through medical charts. In January 2018, psychiatrist-led HCV treatment (with consultation support from infectious diseases specialists) was introduced at the clinic. Prospective treatment results, numbers of reinfections and incidence rates between January 2018 and April 2021 were further investigated.

Baseline data (n=418), showed that 46% were not tested for HCV. Of those tested (n=225), 64% had a chronic HCV infection. By January 2021, 104 HCV treatments were initiated. 97/97 (100%) were HCV RNA negative at end-of-treatment. 78/88 (89%) reached SVR12. Overall, 2 reinfections were noted after SVR12 corresponding to a reinfection rate of 3.5/100 PY. Numbers of HCV treatment did not decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To enhance the HCV treatment cascade, targeted HCV diagnosis efforts are needed. Bringing HCV treatment to OAT clinics enhance the HCV care cascade. HCV treatment education for psychiatrists/addiction specialists makes HCV treatment more sustainable, as specifically noted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Decision Support Systems (DSS) are appropriate tools for guiding policymaking processes in Mental Health (MH) management, especially where a balanced and integrated care provision is required.

To assess the performance of a MH ecosystem for identifying benchmark and target-for-improvement catchment areas according to the Balanced Care model.

The MH provision, distinguishing inpatient, day and outpatient main types of care, has been assessed in the Mental Health Network of Gipuzkoa (Basque Country, Spain) using a DSS, integrating Data Envelopment Analysis, Monte-Carlo Simulation and Artificial Intelligence. 13 catchment areas, defined by a reference MH centre, are the units (universe) for the analysis. The indicators for MH ecosystem performance were: relative technical efficiency, stability and entropy, for identifying both benchmarking and target-for-improvement areas. The analysis of the differences between the two groups can be used to design organizational interventions.

The Mental Health Network of Gipuzkoa showed high global efficiency scores, but it can be considered statistically unstable (small changes in variable values can have relevant impacts on its performance). For a global performance improvement, it is recommended to reduce admissions and readmissions in inpatient care, increase workforce capacity and utilization of day care services and, finally, increase the availability of outpatient care services.

This research offers a guide for evidence-informed policy-making to improve MH care provision in the main types of care and provide aftercare. The characteristics of the area to be improved are critical to design interventions and assess their potential impact on the MH ecosystem.

Electronic health (eHealth) interventions integrate different elements of care in treating and preventing mental ill-health in patients with somatic illnesses. Identifying different sociodemographic characteristics that might be associated with higher perceived usability can help in improving the usability of these e-health interventions.

This study aimed to identify sociodemographic characteristics that might be associated with the perceived usability of the NEVERMIND e-health system, comprised of a mobile application and a sensorized shirt, developed to reduce co-morbid depressive symptoms in patients with breast or prostate cancer.

The study included 129 patients with a diagnosis of breast or prostate cancer who received the NEVERMIND system. Sociodemographic data were collected at baseline. Usability outcomes included the System Usability Scale (SUS), the Mobile Application Rating Scale: user version (uMARS), and a usage index.

The analysis was based on 108 patients (68 breast cancer and 40 prostate cancer patients) who used the NEVERMIND system. The overall mean SUS score at 12-weeks was 73.4 with no statistical differences among different sociodemographic characteristics. The global uMARS score was 3.8, and females scored the app higher than males (β coefficient= 0.16; p=.03, 95% CI 0.02 - 0.3). Females had significant lower usage (β coefficient= -0.13; p=.04, 95% CI -0.25 to -0.01) after adjusting for other covariates.

There was a higher favourability of the mobile application among females compared to males. However, males had significantly higher usage of the NEVERMIND system. The NEVERMIND system does not suffer from ‘digital divide’ where certain sociodemographic characteristics are more associated with higher usability.

The older adults have been considered one of the groups at highest risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and death due to COVID-19. Fear of SARS-CoV-2 infections has become widespread. It’s constantly being enhanced by the media reports and social distancing principle.

The aim of the study was to assessment the occurrence of symptoms of fear of COVID-19 among participants of the Polish University of the Third Age (UTA).

The study included 296 participants of the UTA in Poland, including 258 women and 38 men. The study conducted with the use of the following validated psychometric scales: General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI).

The mean scores in STAI and SHAI demonstrated mild symptoms indicative of anxiety disorders in the older adults. Women and men did differ significantly in terms of the scores obtained in STAI(X-1) (p=0.002) and STAI(X-2) (p=0.020). There were no statistically significant differences between respondents with higher education and those with a different level of education. The single respondents differed significantly from divorced ones in terms of STAI(X-1) (p=0.046). Moreover, widows/widowers differed significantly from divorced ones in terms of STAI(X-2) (p=0.045) and GAD-7 (p=0.032).

The subjective experience of anxiety symptoms associated with fear of contracting COVID-19 was increased due to the ongoing pandemic, but was not significantly high in the analysed population of older people. COVID-19-related anxiety was significantly more common in lonely individuals. Women and men differed significantly in terms of perceived state anxiety and trait anxiety measured by STAI.

Preconceptional genetic diagnosis help couples of genetic disorders carrier risk making an informed reproductive decision. The risk is considerably higher for consanguineous couples. Premarital screening can also offers a crucial health assessment of soon-to-be married couples with genetic risk factors based on specific family history. However, such approach is not usually easy to manage in conservative societies, particularly when the affected family refuse to deliver the necessary information about the genetic condition considered as a taboo.

Here, we addressed the psychological benefits of preconceptional and premarital genetic diagnosis through a retrospective study about the preconceptional diagnosis inquiries in our genetic counselling.

In order to assess requests for autosomal recessive disorders during ten years of our genetic counselling activity at the medical university of Sfax, we reviewed 2500 medical files.

Three couples were recorded for genetic preconceptional diagnosis. Another couple was documented for seeking a premarital screening for an unknown neuropathy before wedding engagement decision. This single case was referred to us because of a familial history of a severe neuropathy that was noted in the offspring of a shared cousin. The couple was unable to bring us more information about the genetic condition because of the familial repugnance.

Although our study is limited at the genetic level, it could be socially interesting because it showed the negative attitudes of the general population towards the genetic conditions and the familial responsiveness, as well as the reticence of physicians towards genetic preconceptional and premarital carrier diagnosis.

Addictions are prominent among indigenous people in North America in relation to historical and contemporary trauma.

We describe the approach emerging in our services for the five indigenous tribes of Maine (the Wabanaki Confederacy) for culturally sensitive treatment of opiate use disorder.

In our auto-ethnographic approach, we introduce or re-introduce participants to cultural beliefs, values, and methods for treating addictions, inclusive of narrative methods (storytelling) which receive greater acceptance by indigenous and marginalized peoples. Indigenous philosophy states that we see the world using the stories that we have absorbed or constructed to explain our perceptions. Using substances is a story that is connected to poverty and adverse childhood events. We create new stories to develop a sense of agency, the sense that one’s actions can make a difference in one’s life.

We present the lessons learned and the results of our using this approach with a tribal population in Maine. Some key concepts include (1) reframing the person’s self-story about being addicted within a threat-power-meaning network, (2) working with stories about the spirit of the addiction and the consequences of ingesting spirit-laden substances without knowing their songs and protocols, (3) constructing future-self-narratives that explore right relationships and meaningful conduct, (4) constructing stories about the intergenerational transmission of addictions and exploring the question of “whom will be the recipient of your addiction?”

We come to understand that the client sets their goals and defines what recovery means for them, which is the heart of a harm reduction approach.

Sexual assault constitutes a major problem in Tunisian society. There is no definitive typology of the characteristics of those who sexually assault. The great diversity of sexual assault behaviors and the different underlying motivations do not allow us to describe a typical profile of the sexual assailant. There may be cognitive, personality trait, lifestyle, and pathway distortions involved in the etiology and maintenance of deviant sexual behaviors.

To establish the socio-demographic and clinical profile of the perpetrators of sexual assault appraised in the psychiatric service of Mahdia.

This is a descriptive retrospective file-based study on all subjects assessed at the Taher Sfar Mahdia psychiatric department for sexual assault during the period from January 01, 2010 to December 31, 2020.

Our sample consisted of 18 interviewed subjects. The median age was 40 years with extremes of age of the accused ranging from 30 to 61 years. The entire population is male. He was essentially of average socio-economic level. A psychiatric diagnosis was retained in 50% of the perpetrators of sexual assault: bipolar disorder (27.7%), schizophrenia (11.1%), antisocial type personality disorders (5.5%) and mental retardation (5.5%). Indecent assault was the most common assault followed by rape. The minors were victims in 33.3% of the cases Among those arrested, 72% were considered responsible for their acts and only one is considered irresponsible.

The studies having focused on the characteristics of the sexual aggressors concluded with a profile of the young man, single and badly inserted which does not constitute in any case a typical profile.

Analysis of the first-episode psychosis remission, including post-psychotic affective and primary negative symptoms as well as personality changes, is necessary to personalize therapy and rehabilitation.

We aimed to identify different trajectories of psychosis remission in young adults.

First-episode psychosis patients (n=56, mean age 19.8±2.5 years, all males) underwent psychopathological assessment at the stage of remission.

Three trajectories of remission were identified. The thymopathic trajectory (33.93%, 19 patients) was characterized by the gradual increase of subclinical affective symptoms and resulted with a high-quality remission. In 63.61% cases in this group persistent depressed mood was present after a psychotic episode. Some patients (36.84%) became prone to depressive reactions. The pathocharacterological trajectory (39.28%, 22 patients) was characterised by personality changes with increase of existing traits or the development of traits previously not present. Types with an increase of schizoid (14.29%), histrionic (19.64%), and anxiety-hypochondriacal (5.36%) traits were identified. Patients in this group had high- as well as low-quality remission. The destructive trajectory (26.79%, 15 patients) was characterised by residual positive or single negative symptoms. Patients in this subgroup had low-quality remission with poor functioning and signs of treatment resistance.

Analysis of trajectories of the first-episode psychosis remission allowed us to choose the most effective strategy for personalized supportive treatment.

Schizophrenia is often accompanied by functional deterioration which can impede a person‛s everyday activities. Families are an important part in providing care for their ailed member‚ but often lack resources to deal with different challenges included in such care. Mental health professionals treating such patients sometimes neglect the importance of including their families‚ or primary caretaker in the treatment plan.

We will present two cases of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia with prominently negative symptoms and the challenges met by their caretakers and mental health professionals in the treatment.

Patient history‚ psychiatric evaluation, psychiatric treatment‚ and the role of the family will be presented.

21 years old patient came with his mother after years of not meeting the expected level of functioning. He was misdiagnosed for a couple of years. His treatment was impeded by loss in the family‚ which also affected both him and his mother. Inability to include her earlier in his treatment became a challenge. Second patient has been treated for schizophrenia with dominant negative symptoms‚ inconsistently‚ for ten years. Her family became more involved in her treatment only after she presented with positive symptoms. Their involvement was important as it resulted in patient‛s better compliance.

Supporting a family member diagnosed with schizophrenia can be overwhelming for the families. Including family members in the treatment early on, can be beneficial both for the patient and the family.

Chronic Hepatitis C infection is considered a systemic disease with extrahepatic manifestations, mainly neuropsychiatric symptoms, which is associated with a chronic low-grade inflammatory state. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) eradication is currently achieved in >98% of cases with oral direct-acting antivirals (DAA).

To study potential clinical neuropsychiatric changes (mood, cognition, sleep, gastrointestinal, sickness, and motion) in HCV-infected patients after HCV eradication with DAA.

Design: Cohort study. Subjects: 37 HCV-infected patients, aged<55 years old, with non-advanced liver disease receiving DAA; free of current mental disorder. 24 healthy controls were included at baseline. Assessment: -Baseline (BL) (socio-demographic and clinical variables, MINI-DSM-IV, and Neurotoxicity Scale (NRS), (mood, cognitive, sleep, gastrointestinal, sickness and motor dimensions). Follow-up: End-of-treatment, 12weeks-after and 48weeks-after DAA: NRS. Analysis: Descriptive and bivariate non-parametrical analysis.

NRS total score and dimensions where different between cases and controls (.000) at baseline. NRS total score (.000) and mood (.000), cognition (.000), sleep (.002), gastrointestinal (.017), and sickness (.003), except motor dimension score (.130) showed significant longitudinal improvement.

HCV-infected patients with mild liver disease presented significantly worse scores for neurotoxicity symptomatology in all dimensions compared to healthy individuals. After HCV eradication with DAA, both at short and long follow-up a significant improvement of the NRS total score and each of the dimensions (except motor) were observed. However, they did not reach the values of healthy individuals, suggesting a not complete neuropsychiatric restoration in the period studied. Inflammation and immune dysregulation could contribute to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Osteopontin (OPN) is a key cytokine-like molecule in cellular immune response and it can directly modulate the cytokine expression and survival of microglia. Furthermore, its mRNA expression is elevated in first episode psychosis. Imbalance of T-helper subtypes could also represent a vulnerability factor for schizophrenia.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relevance of T-helper subtype associated cytokines, OPN and NLR in the assessment of the severity of schizophrenia.

22 patients with schizophrenia were assessed for the intensity of their symptoms by PANSS and CGI scores. Serum OPN, IFNy, IL-10 and IL-8 concentrations were measured by ELISA kits and NLR was calculated from blood count. Statistical evaluation was performed using Mann-Whitney U test, Student’s t test and Spearman correlation.

We found significant correlation between the level of OPN and PANSS-total, PANSS-general scores. IFNy level and NLR showed significant correlation with PANSS-total, PANSS-positive, PANSS-general and CGI score. Antipsychotic therapy only had significant effects on NLR and OPN levels, both of which were significantly reduced after long-term antipsychotic treatment.

Our results indicate that elevated OPN and IFNy concentrations, and increased NLR are associated with severe symptoms in schizophrenia and suggest the importance of Th1 subtype in patients with high PANSS-positive and PANSS-general score. Antipsychotic treatment had significant effects on the level of OPN and NLR, but not on the level of IFNy. Overall our results strengthen the inflammation hypothesis of schizophrenia.

High rate of streptococcus-like infections and related titers has been found in adult ADHD patients. No studies have expressively investigated innate immune system in ADHD patients.

To evaluate the relationship between streptococcal infections, autoimmunity and innate immune system in adult ADHD patients.

The study sample consisted of adult DSM-5 ADHD outpatients referring to the adult ADHD center of “San Luigi Gonzaga” University Hospital and non-clinical adult controls recruited among general population (screened using Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale - ASRS-v.1). All titers were determined in patients’ plasma by specific microwell ELISA kits, whereas genetic polymorphisms were determined by PCR methodology. We compared anti-streptolysin O (ASO), anti-deoxyribonuclease B (anti-DNase B), and anti-basal ganglia antibodies (ABGA) titers of patients with those of controls. Data about history of previous streptococcus/ streptococcus-like infections were collected by ad-hoc form. Furthermore, to investigate the susceptibility to Gram+-borne infections of adult ADHD patients, due to innate immune system impairment, we also evaluated the polymorphism of Toll-like receptors 2, 4, and 9.

Although ADHD patients did not show higher rate of both previous infections (52.7% vs. 66.7%, p=.678) and ASO titers (18.2% vs. 0.0%, p=.577), they had really higher levels of anti-DNase B (85.5% vs. 16.7%, p=.001) and ABGA titers (78.2% vs. 33.3%, p=.036). Genetic analysis did not underline differences in polymorphism compared to general population (GENOME browser).

The high association between previous streptococcal infections, basal ganglia autoimmunity among ADHD patients was confirmed. TLR polymorphism does not seem to be involved in this type of vulnerability.

Reflexive skills are a system of deliberate actions aimed at understanding and evaluating “I” and one’s own behavior. Theoretical analysis made it possible to distinguish three stages in the formation of reflexive skills. EMOTIONAL - evaluation of “I” as the basis of positive emotions. COGNITIVE - understanding (awareness) of one’s own capabilities for solving a problem. OPERATIONAL - solving a problem based on an assessment of the “I” and an understanding of their capabilities.

The identification of three stages of the formation of reflexive skills, as prevention of adolescent suicide, makes it possible to develop an effective training program for adolescents at risk in the Centers for psychiatric and psychological assistance.

Known risk factors for developing of first-time psychosis in patients with deep brain stimulator (DBS) include older age, short time after implant placement and cerebral target for stimulation. In particular, stimulation of subtalamic nucleus and globus pallidus internus has been shown to elicit psychotic symptoms in various case reports. To date, there are no cases describing onset of psychosis due to DBS in the ventralis intermediate nucleus (Vim) of the thalamus.

Case describtion of psychotic episode provoked by DBS in Vim region

Case report of 70 y.o. female with unilateral DBS from 2012 in Vim for essential tremor, who developed therapy resistant psychotic symptoms right after adjusted settings of the DBS.

Psychotic onset of otherwise healthy 70 y.o. patient occurred and gradually worsened after adjustment of DBS settings in absence of other iatrogenic factors, including medication and comorbidity, and required involuntary hospitalization one week after beginning of psychosis. Treatment after hospitalization comprised olanzapine 10 mg. 1dd1 did not cause resolvent of psychosis. Because of therapy resistance to psychofarmaca and worsening of psychotic symptoms, by way of exception neurologists had to change the settings back to basic leading to complete and sustained remission of psychosis within two days.

Among side effects of DBS in Vim, psychotic symptoms have never been reported. However, as in our patient, psychosis occurred after changes of settings in DBS and presented acutely, was severe, resulted in involuntary hospitalization and was therapy resistant. Pathophysiology of DBS-induced psychosis in Vim region is not known and requires further investigation.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an equal method of treating patients with end stage renal disease ( ESRD). The patients are left to themselves in the new situation. The psychiatrist recognizes their needs and through group therapy enables them to heal quality intrapsychic conflicts.

The study analized data on the intensity of depression, anxiety of an individual patient respectively, but also of his family member (caregiver) too. The control questionnaires are foreseen for both groups one year after group therapy participation. The assumption is that symptoms of depression and anxiety will be less expressed with group support by the psychiatrist.

Two questionnaires were used: Hamilton’s rating scale for depression and Hamilton’s anxiety rating scale and identical questionnaires for member of the family caring for the patients. 13 patients who accepted group therapy were examined in our institution. They were of different gender and age, mean age 53±13.46 mini-max 25-72 years.

Average months of dialysis duration 29.15±21.84 min-max 6-84 Dialysis was performed without an assistant but with some help n 13( 100%) from the patient. They describe ailments from anxiety (30.77%) and depression ( 38.46% ) which they did not have premorbidly, and feel rejected on the emotional sphere, although not on the part of organic medicine.

Emphasis is placed on the emotional state and needs of the patient with severe physical ailments, in other words, demanding treatment methods, as well as the importance of emotional support from family members without whom these patients would have a poorer quality of life.

DSM-V clarifies that “life threatening illness or debilitating medical condition is not necessarily considered a traumatic event”. However, cancer diagnosis and treatment influence on mental health. Patients after surgery of head and neck tumors need special rehabilitation, because of loss or impairment of speech function. This significantly reduces communicative potential, changes social status, reduces rehabilitation potential.

During 6 years we have conducted studies to improve methods of psychological and pedagogical diagnostics, optimize speech therapy and psychological support for increasing effectiveness of speech rehabilitation.

Speech rehabilitation was carried out with correctional-pedagogical technologies and psychological support. We used Achieving Tendency Scale, Questionnaire measures of Affiliative Tendency and Sensitivity to Rejection, narrative interview, Scale of speech utterance implementation, rehabilitation potential evaluation, general condition assessment by ECOG and Karnovsky, auditory assessment. Speech therapy included methods for eliminating dysphagia, normalizing speech breathing, improving utterance realization. Psychological support kept meaning-narrative approach.

Number of patients without difficulties or with slight difficulties in speech utterance implementation increased by 57.1%. Number of patients with high rehabilitation potential increased by 48.8%.

Psychological and pedagogical rehabilitation and resocialization after surgery of head and neck tumors has positive effect on mental health of patients, forms special rehabilitation motivation, helps to avoid disability and to transform life in new conditions.

Cannabis is the most commonly used psychoactive drug, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Accordingly, to the European Drug Report 2021, the prevalence of cannabis use is about five times that of other substances, so that last year cannabis use among EU inhabitants aged 15 to 24y is estimated at 19.2 %. Even though most human research has concluded that Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), tends to dampen rather than provoke aggression in acute doses, recent evidence suggests a relationship between cannabis usage and violent behavior, especially when associated with neurodevelopment stages.

To review the existing evidence on the association between cannabis and violence in young adults and provide an overview of possible mechanisms explaining this relation.

Literature review was based on PubMed/ MEDLINE, using key words inclusive for violence, cannabis and adolescence. Studies included focused the young-adults population and considered the relation between cannabis use and behaviors reported as acts of physical violence. Studies were excluded if they included self-harm behaviors.

Recent studies, including case-reports, showed a global moderate association between cannabis use and violence. Preliminary data has even highlighted a potential larger effect in more frequent users. Also, the cannabis role in the central nervous system (CNS), with most expression in the limbic cortices, and especially as it participates in a variety of brain function modulations - including executive functions, inhibition/impulsivity, and emotional control, has been pointed as one of the main arguments for this relation.

Further studies may shed light on the effects of cannabis use on behavior.
