The use of social networks is an integral part of our daily life as a means of communication. Patients manage information mostly from the internet, that strongly influence their beliefs and behaviors toward illness. Scientific dissemination through these kinds of platforms has expanded enormously in recent years, varying between them in style, contents and type of interaction with the users, that make necessary an individualized analysis. The use of Instagram goes beyond sharing photos and free comments, and it has been used extensively in different fields of medicine, such as mental health. This tool has enormous potential as a means of more effective communication and prevention and it is very valuable as a tool for psychoeducation and prevention in mental health. However, in the era where “information is easy to get but knowledge is difficult to find”, professionals of mental health should get involved and adapt to new scenarios of communication.

tDCS is a low-cost and well-tolerated neuromodulation treatment of depression. It seems to be a good and effective option to start the treatment of depression along or instead of medication in mild or moderate depression. tDCS can be used as an add-on treatment with psychotherapy or medication. Home based tDCS is easy to conduct. However, tDCS should be used with qualified protocols like any other neuromodulation treatment. When the tools in psychiatry are diversifying the precise diagnostics, careful defining of the clinical picture and effective early and individually planned management of depression are key elements gaining better outcomes and preventing treatment resistant depression.

Appropriate and adequate treatment of psychiatric conditions in the community or at first presentation to the hospital may prevent rehospitalization. Information about hospital readmission factors may help to reduce readmission rates.

The scoping review sought to examine the readmission of patients to acute psychiatric hospitals to determine predictors and interventions to reduce psychiatric readmission rates.

A scoping review was conducted in eleven bibliographic databases to identify the relevant peer‐reviewed studies. Two reviewers independently assessed full‐text articles, and a screening process was undertaken to identify studies for inclusion in the review. PRISMA checklist was adopted, and with the Covidence software, 75 articles were eligible for review. Data extraction was conducted, collated, summarized, and findings were reported.

The outcome of the review shows that learning disabilities, developmental delays, and alcohol, drug, and substance abuse, were crucial factors that increased the risk of readmission. It was also established through the review that greater access to mental health services in residential treatment and improved crisis intervention in congregate care settings were indicated as factors that reduce the risk of readmission.

High rates of readmission may adversely impact healthcare spending. This study suggests a need for focused health policies to address readmission factors and improve community‐based care.

Relationship to physical pain (Joiner, 2005, O’Connor, Kirtley, 2018, Galynker, 2017) and psychological pain (Eisenberger et al., 2003) are related to the risk of suicidality in adolescents.

The aim was to reveal the relationship between interpersonal needs, relation to pain and suicidality in adolescent with or without suicidal thought and/or attempts.

92 adolescents without suicidal thoughts (16 males, 12-21 years old), 132 adolescents with experience of suicidal thoughts in the past or present (22 males, 12-21 years old) and 55 adolescents (7 males, 12-21 years old) ongoing clinical treatment due to suicidal actions or attempts filled Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (Van Orden et al., 2012), Discomfort Intolerance Scale (Schmidt et al., 2006), The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (Sullivan et al., 1995).

Adolescents with suicidal actions score lower in the fear of physical pain (χ²=18.19, p<.01) but higher in powerlessness (χ²=6.58, p<.05). They also experience higher burdensome and thwarted belongingness (χ²=34.50-87.92, p<.01). Their burdensome is more related to avoidance of pain (r=-.38 comparing to r=.06 and r=.04 in the control groups) while fear of pain is related to burdensome in the two control groups only.

In adolescents with suicidal actions their avoidance of pain could be the target of psychotherapy while in adolescent with suicidal thoughts or without it there is a fear of pain.

Paliperidone Palmitate 3-month formulation (PP3M) has shown a significantly longer time to relapse compared to placebo, with similar efficacy and safety to Paliperidone Palmitate 1-month (PP1M) (Carpiniello et al. Drug Des. Devel. Ther. 2016; 10 1731–1742).

The main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of PP3M in preventing hospital admissions and emergency room visits, in people with non-acute schizophrenia in a naturalistic psychiatric outpatient setting

Sample: 30 people with diagnosis of schizophrenia (DSM 5 criteria), who had started treatment with PP3M, after being stabilized with PP1M (the dose was not modified in the four months prior to inclusion in the study)

Quarterly basis, the following evaluations were performed during a follow-up period of 66 months:

Major depressive disorder (MDD)is one of the most common psychiatric disorders and a large number of patients present a poor response to treatment. Shortening of telomeres physiologically occurs after each cell division and their shortening is also associated with cell ageing. Studies are affirming that patients who suffer from mental illnesses have shorter telomeres in comparison with patients without such affections. 4 The effect of antidepressant medication on the biology of the telomeres was studied very little in humans and the current data suggest that the length of telomeres is a promising target regarding the prognosis and the response to psychotropic treatment.

To analyze the telomere length (TL) from peripheral blood DNA of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to healthy controls. A second objective was to compare the TL of patients in relation to antidepressant treatment.

We analysed the clinical data from 16 patients admitted to the Psychiatry Clinic of Timisoara with the diagnosis of MDD and 10 healthy controls. The collection of clinical data was carried out in a structured and standardized manner both on paper and electronically, and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) was applied to assess the severity of depression. Also, blood samples were collected, and plasma and white blood cells (WBC) were separated by centrifugation. Patients’ samples were collected before and after 12 weeks of escitalopram antidepressant treatment, and a structured diagnostic interview and a standardized depression rating scale were done. DNA was extracted from WBC using the QIAamp DNA Mini Kit (Qiagen), and TL was determined by real time PCR using the Absolute Human Telomere Length Quantification qPCR Assay Kit (Sciencell Research Laboratories) according to the manufacturers’ specifications. The TL expressed as megabases/diploid cell (Mb/DC) were compared between cases and controls using a Mann-Whitney test, and between patients before and after treatment using a Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank statistical test.

The mean±SD telomere length for healthy controls was 0.3614±0.082Mb/DC, for treatment naïve patients was 0.4513±0.199Mb/DC, and for patients after treatment was 0.3476±0.070Mb/DC. There was no statistical significant difference in TL between patients and controls (p=0.266), nor between patients before and after treatment (p=0.055).

In this pilot project of limited sample size there was no difference in TL between MDD patients and healthy controls. Moreover, the TL of patients did not significantly change after 12 weeks of escitalopram antidepressant treatment.

There is increasing interest in the association between neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with COVID-19 and the proinflammatory status of the disease. Hospital del Mar Post-Covid Psychiatry Unit carried out a descriptive study to analyze the link between inflammation and mental health symptoms in COVID-19 patients.

Relate inflammation parameters to the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms in COVID-19 patients treated at the Hospital del Mar Post-Covid Psychiatry Unit.

A database of patients evaluated by the Post-covid Psychiatry unit was developed. Clinical variables, whether hospitalization is required and inflammation indicators during COVID-19 infection (PCR and IL-6 analytical values) were recorded.

Three screening scales for psychiatric symptoms were given to the patients: PHQ-9 for depression (1-4: minimal depression, 5-9: mild, 10-14: moderate, 15-19: moderately severe, 20-27: severe), GAD-7 for anxiety (cutoff point >=6) and PCL-5 for post-traumatic stress symptoms (cutoff point >6).

T-student statistics for independent samples and the pearson correlation were used to relate inflammation parameters to depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms obtained from the scales.

149 patients were attended between may 2020 and april 2021. 78 patients had PCR value and 52 had IL-6 value. There is no correlation between the score obtained on the PHQ-9, GAD-7 and PCL-5 scales and PCR or IL-6 value.

There is no relation between being hospitalized for covid infection and the values of PHQ9 and GAD7. Patients hospitalized had lower scores in PCL-5 scale (t=2.67, p=0.009). There are no differences in the scale scores among patients requiring orotracheal intubation or not.

In this descriptive study, inflammation parameters were not related with psychiatric symptoms in COVID-19 patients. Neither association was found between the inflammation parameters and the severity of COVID-19 symptoms, measured in terms of hospitalization requirement.

HIV infection presents complications that may include neuropsychiatric symptoms and whose management is important to avoid misdiagnosis and mistreatment.

This case aims to highlight the importance of assessing HIV comorbidity in patients with psychiatric onset pathology.

Case report and literature review.

We present the case of a patient diagnosed with HIV in 1985, who after 20 years of disease with irregular adherence begins to present delusional ideation of harm and self-referential, control experiences, thought diffusion phenomena, and possible auditory hallucinations, with poor evolution despite the establishment of numerous antipsychotic treatments, which evolves over the years towards a confabulatory character and with progressive neuropsychological deterioration. After numerous admissions, and despite several treatments, the patient developed over time memory failures, bradypsychia, gait disturbances, and difficulties in self-care, which further aggravated his condition by hindering therapeutic adherence, which ended with the patient’s chronic institutionalization. Diagnosis was AIDS dementia complex.

HIV hardly replicates in the central nervous system but generates antigenemia which, in turn, generates an inflammatory infiltrate that can cause diffuse involvement, predominantly subcortical and limbic system. Usually, the dementia-AIDS picture is insidious and develops in patients with poor control of the primary disease. It is recommended to optimize antiretroviral therapy and neuroprotective agents, as well as symptomatic treatment by psychiatry.

Chronic subclinical inflammation is considered to be an important contributor to the development of schizophrenia. Meta-analyses confirm the presence of higher levels of inflammatory markers in schizophrenia and its prodromal stages compared to controls, however studies differ in terms of associated cytokines. Obesity is a common problem in patients with schizophrenia and, at the same time, it is recognized as a source of subclinical inflammation in the general population.

The aim of the study was to verify if there is an association between the presence of overweight/obesity and higher levels of CRP and IL-6 in various stages of psychotic disorders and if these factors may influence the course of the disease

Study was performed in four study groups: 31 healthy controls (HC), 16 patients with ultra-high risk of psychosis (UHR), 30 with first episode of psychosis (FEP) and 71 with chronic schizophrenia (SCH). The severity of psychopathological symptoms in SCH was assed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). The serum levels of inflammatory markers were measured using sensitive ELISA tests.

Study groups significantly differed in the levels of CRP and IL-6. The presence of overweight/obesity was associated with significantly higher levels of CRP in CON and UHR and IL-6 in CON, FEP and SCH. IL-6 was positively correlated with the severity of positive symptoms in PANSS in SCH, however neither IM or BMI were associated with other psychopathological symptoms or number and frequency of exacerbations in schizophrenia patients.

Overweight/obesity is associated with subclinical inflammation in both healthy controls and patients with various stages of psychotic disorders. Subclinical inflammation may be correlated with the course of the disease, however we did not find any direct associations between overweight/obesity and the severity of symptoms. Further studies are needed to verify, if reduction of BMI would be beneficial in reducing levels of inflammatory markers and alleviating disease course.

Psychoses constitute an extremely heterogeneous clinical entity, with variable medical and socio-professional prognosis depending on several associated factors.

- To describe the socio-professional and medical characteristics of patients with psychotic disorders.

- To study the repercussions of these psychotic disorders on the patients’ medical fitness for work.

Cross-sectional descriptive study of workers with psychotic disorders referred to the consultation of occupational pathology of Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis for a medical opinion of fitness during the period from January 2013 to July 2022.

A total of 34 patients were included. The average age was 41.67 ± 10 years. A male predominance was noted with a sex ratio (M/F) of 1.12. Patients with bipolar disorders represented 77% (n=26) of the psychotics versus 23% with schizophrenia (n=8). Two cases had a family history of psychosis. The most represented sector was the health sector in 41% of cases, followed by the tertiary sector in 11.8% of cases. The most prevalent job position was administrative assistant (14.7%). The average professional seniority was 17.07 ± 11.18 years. At the end of the medical aptitude consultation, 17% of the patients (n=6) were considered fit to continue their usual professional activity and 70% of the patients (n=24) had certain restrictions, mainly an exemption from night work in 46% of the cases (n=11) and from security and responsibility functions in 17% of cases (n=4). Temporary unfitness for work was indicated for 18% of patients (n=6) with a median duration of 8 ± 3.46 months. Twenty-three percent (23%) of the patients were judged permanently unfit for their jobs. Early retirement was proposed for five patients. The main diagnosis for permanent unfitness was bipolar disorder (7/8 patients).

The evaluation of the social and professional impact of psychotic disorders is an area of research that requires continuous and periodic re-evaluation.

Resting state electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities in schizophrenia (SCZ) suggest alterations in neural oscillatory activity. However, few studies have examined EEG coherence in this population.

Therefore, this study investigated whether these electrophysiological characteristics differentiate schizophrenic patients from healthy controls.

This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical case-control study. The selected patients were followed for SCZ at the psychiatry "C" department at the Hedi Chaker hospital of Sfax. Patients were assessed by the Positive and Negative Schizophrenia scale (PANSS) and the Treatment Adherence Scale (MARS). They all benefited from an EEG at the service of functional explorations in Sfax. Student’s test was performed to compare the coherence values between groups.

Thirty men including 15 schizophrenic patients and 15 age- and sex-matched controls were included. The average age was 40 years ±12.72 years for schizophrenics and 47.93 ± 15.61 years for healthy controls. Schizophrenics had an average PANSS of 64.6±22.7, and an average MARS score of 5.8 ± 3.09.

In terms of intra-hemispheric coherence, Schizophrenic patients generally exhibited higher coherence at the Delta band compared to healthy controls. In contrast, schizophrenic patients appeared to have decreased intra-hemispheric connectivity for other frequency bands, particularly between the frontal and other brain lobes bilaterally.

In this study, we found that the schizophrenic patients had significantly higher coherence in the delta frequency band compared to the normal controls. These findings suggest that EEG can be a sensitive measure for diagnosing SCZ.

Natural caregivers of patients with schizophrenia constitute a main source of care as they have to shoulder a multitude of caregiving responsibilities and are then confronted with considerable difficulties while providing care. As a result, natural caregivers, often described as “the hidden patients” usually suffer from psychological consequences such as anxiety and depression.

This study aimed to asses anxiety and depression among natural caregivers of patients with schizophrenia and to identify risk factors for developing such disorders.

We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study, including 80 natural caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. We used the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to evaluate anxiety and depression.

The typical caregiver profile was consistent with a 55-year old married illiterate first degree relative (mostly parents or spouses) with a low socio-economic level.

The mean anxiety score was 10.6± 5,1 and the mean depression score was 11.6± 6.2. Depression and anxiety were diagnosed in 66% of caregivers.

Anxiety and depression scores were significantly higher among female illiterate unemployed caregivers, those with organic history and among parents and correlated with the caregiving duration.

Anxiety scores were higher when patients in charge had poor therapeutic adherence and aggressive behavior and correlated with the age of caregivers and the number of other sick persons in charge.

Caregivers reported higher levels of depression when patients in charge were not married, unemployed and had a history of suicide attempts.

Anxiety score were significantly correlated with depression scores.

Caregivers of patients with schizophrenia, although thought to be a privileged source of emotional and social support, are hardly taken into account following the deinstitutionalization movement.

Mirror exposure therapies (MET) have been proposed to reduce symptomatology in patients with Anorexia Nervosa. However, most MET protocols or related studies do not specify the patients’ distance to the mirror, or when they do so, such a distance may differ significantly (from 0,5 to 3 meters). Such modifications of mirror positioning could imply variations in patients’ fixation patterns on different body parts (i.e., attentional bias between weight-related and non-weight related body parts), since previous studies shown that dissociated neural systems (either in left or right cerebral hemispheres) are involved in the attentional patterns and scanning strategies depending on the distance (i.e., in near and far space). Furthermore, as the body-related attentional bias (AB) has been shown to be a part of the maintenance mechanism of AN symptomatology, any modification of attentional patterns due to mirror’s distance variations may influence the efficacy of MET.

This study aims to use Virtual Reality (VR) and Eye-Tracking (ET) technologies to precisely analyse the effect of the distance to the mirror on the attentional patterns.

137 female college students were immersed in a VR environment in which they could look in the mirror at their respective avatars created from the measurements and photos of their real bodies. The mirror was positioned at 3.30m in front of the participants in “group 1” (n1 = 54), and at 1.54m in front of the participants in “group 2” (n2 = 83). Eye-Tracking feature and OGAMA software (Freie Universität, Berlin, Germany) were used to record and process the visual attentional pattern of each participant, during a 30-second free viewing task at her avatar. Complete Fixation Time (CFT) was assessed as the fixation time difference between weight- and non-weight- related body parts, defined from the weight scale of the PASTAS questionnaire. Independent Sample t-Test was conducted to analyse CFT mean difference between both groups.

Independent Samples t-Test shows statistically significant CFT mean difference (F (1, 135) = 1.571, p < 0.001, 95% IC [1717; 5581]) between both groups. While fixation pattern of the group positioned further to the mirror (group 1) was more focused on weight-related body parts (CFT mean = 2282ms, SD = 809), the fixation pattern of the group positioned closer to the mirror (group 2) was more focused on non-weight-related body parts (CFT mean = -1367ms, SD = 587).

This study shows new opportunities to use VR and ET technologies to precisely analyse the variations of fixation patterns as a function of mirror position in MET. Such information may contribute to adapt and develop new MET’s protocols for AN patients, optimizing the distance to the mirror. It also underscores the importance of specifying the distance to the mirror in MET-related studies to improve replicability.

Catatonia is diagnosed in 5–43% of patients with various mental disorders, thus actualizing the problem of elaborating therapeutic interventions for catatonia on an outpatient basis. Although the current experience in application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in catatonia is limited, it provides promising data on positive effect of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) stimulation in a series of clinical observations. According to the available data, TMS shows comparable efficacy with electroconvulsive therapy, but unlike it is safe and does not require general anesthesia in intensive care unit.

to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TMS in the treatment of catatonia in patients with mental disorders

Four patients were diagnosed with catatonia as part of schizophrenia spectrum disorders in three cases (P1,4,7) and in one case within the structure of recurrent depression phase (P8). Psychopathological examination includes PANSS, SAS, NSA-4, BFCRS, NCRS, and BACS.

Personalized choice of stimulation protocol was determined by rCBF lateralization in DLPFC reflecting the neuronal activity in that region: 1) P1, P4, and P8 underwent 20 sessions of high-frequency stimulation at the frequency of 20 Hz with the amplitude of 120% MT in the projection of left DLPFC 2) P7 underwent 20 sessions of low-frequency stimulation at the frequency of 1 Hz with the amplitude of 120% MT in the projection of right DLPFC

Safety evaluation was performed daily during TMS sessions. None of participants reported any adverse events at high compliance.

The efficacy was estimated during by the following criteria: 1) positive clinical response: decline of BFCRS and NCRS scores by 70% from the primary evaluation 2) achievement symptomatic remission (total BFCRS and NCRS score 3 and less).

Positive clinical response was detected in all four patients, however, symptomatic remission was formed only in two of them (P1 and P4) referring to BFCRS.

Evaluation of neurotransmitter concentration: P1, P7, P8 showed a tendency for absolute and relative glutamate concentration values to approach normal. After the TMS course GABA concentration diminished in all cases but P4, in whom the elevation of GABA level was registered.

TMS potentially activates metabolic processes in brain tissues, thus promoting deceleration of pathological mechanisms and potentiating neuroplasticity with procognitive effect, expressed primarily in the increase of processing speed and response to it, as well as in the improvement of working memory. To summarize, the influence of TMS on local brain regions makes it possible to achieve a positive clinical effect in treatment of catatonia.

No strong and unequivocal results were received for the efficacy of TMS in treatment of catatonia. A positive clinical effect was seen, however, insufficient for achieving remission in the majority of subjects.

To date, most of the substance-induced psychosis (SIP) risk factor research has focused on meth/amphetamine use with cross-sectional study designs. Register-linkage studies, in turn, have focused mostly on the prognosis of SIP regarding mortality or conversion to schizophrenia. Far less is known about preceding factors before the incident SIP episode such as psychiatric comorbidity or work-related factors.

There is no previous research on how persons with SIP differ from persons with other incident psychotic episodes (first-episode psychosis, FEP). This study aims to explore: 1) are their differences in previous psychiatric diagnoses and 2) work-related factors between SIPs and FEPs before the incident psychosis episodes.

The study covers extensive register-linkage data sets from Sweden. Incident SIP cases (n=7320) were identified from National Patient Register during the years 2006-2016 and matched 1:1 (age, gender, and calendar year) with incident FEP cases. Information from the sociodemographic background, psychiatric disorders, and work-related factors during the proceeding two-year period before the incident SIP/FEP episode were linked from national registries. SIPs vs FEPs were compared using logistic regression analysis, adjusted with education level, family situation, dwelling, country of origin and Charlson Comorbidity Index.

Previous self-harm (OR 2.3;95%CI 2.1-2.6), ADHD (OR 1.8;95%CI 1.6-2.0) and substance dependence diagnoses (OR 7.2;95%CI 6.6-7.9) were more prevalent among SIPs compared to FEPs. In turn, all other previous psychiatric disorder diagnoses were less prevalent among SIPs. Compared to FEPs, SIPs were more often unemployed (OR 1.2;95%CI 1.1-1.2) and had less any employment (OR 0.9, 95%CI 0.9-0.98), but also, they were less often on sickness abstinence over 180 days (OR 1.1, 95%CI 0.9-1.3) The prevalence of previous substance use disorder was most common in alcohol SIP (OR 9.6;95%Cl 7.3-12.7).

Among persons with any incident psychotic episode entering the health care system, assessment of suicidality and ADHD treatment should be carried out for persons with substance-induced psychosis. In addition, as persons with SIPs compared to FEPs are less likely to be employed, on long sickness-abstinence periods or a disability pension, employment support should be provided alongside SIP treatment as well as assessment of workability and necessity for social benefits.

The SCL-90 is a self repost clinical rating scale oriented toward the symptomatic behavior of psychiatric outpatients. The primary symptom dimensions measured by the SCL-90 are the nine symptom constructs given below: somatization, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychotism. Marital adjustment test: A 15-item scale that measures marital satisfaction. It was initially used to differentiate well-adjusted couples from distressed (unsatisfied) couples. The 15 items are answered on a variety of response scales.

In this study; The SCL-90 and Marital Adjustment Test have been applied on parents of children with Spina Bifida. A total of 40 person was used which is 25 women and 15 men. Above of 1 score has been examined high level for SCL-90 test. For Marital Adjustment Test, we accept the lowest score is 1 and the highest score is 60. Cut-off score accepted is 43. If the parents have score that is below 43, is determined incompatible, and is above 43 is determined compatible.

The result has been obtained, showed us, the parents who have above 1 score for SCL-90, have below score 43 on Marital Adjustment Test.

The study show that parents who have somatization problems are not align with their partners. Participants have symptomatic problems because of their children health situation can cause an unaligned marriage. This suggests that parents of patients with diseases like SB should get the needed psychiatric help and supportive care during the course of treatment.

The study has done retrospectively and included 2583 psychiatric patients who are hospitalized or are visiting the Outpatient clinic. A concise questionnaire was formed to record the main reason of avoidance (Denial/Medical Issues/ Loss of follow up/ other)

520 out of 2583 (21%) remained not fully vaccinated throughout the pandemic and denial by the patient was the main reason (55%). The reasons recorded at the patient’s file by the physician are shown at table 1.Table 1

Psychiatric patients belong to a high probability group for vaccine avoidance. In our study the frequency of unvaccinated psychiatric patients found greater than healthy population and the main reason is patient decision not to consent. The outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused adverse outcomes on tens of millions of people worldwide, both physically and psychologically. As a public health response, quarantine has been recruited as a national measure in COVID-19, which subjects people who are suspected and confirmed cases to strictly isolation. Unfortunately, people may suffer from various adverse effects under self-quarantine at home. Thus, it is crucial to explore how to improve the psychological outcomes of self-quarantined residents to provide future intervention targets.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, mandatory quarantine may threaten people’s psychological health and well-being. This study aimed to test the relationship between self-compassion and general well-being among self-quarantined residents and to examine the mediating role of certainty in control (i.e., a component of psychological security) in the relation. It further explored the moderated role of positive coping in the correlation between self-compassion and certainty in control.

Participants were 312 self-quarantined residents (120 men, 192 women) from a community in Liaoning Province, China, who completed online questionnaires of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), Security Questionnaire (SQ), Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), and General Well-Being Scale (GWBS). A moderated mediation model was conducted to test the hypotheses.

The moderated mediation model suggested that self-compassion was positively associated with well-being. Certainty in control partially mediated the relationship between self-compassion and general well-being. Moreover, positive coping moderated the relationship between self-compassion and certainty in control. The link between self-compassion and certainty in control was stronger among low-level positive coping people than high-level ones.

Findings reveal that increased psychological security (e.g., certainty in control) by self-compassion contributes to general well-being during the self-quarantined period. People with low positive coping may benefit more from self-compassion. This study thus broadens the understanding of the mechanism underlying self-compassion on positive functioning and well-being. Psychological interventions should focus on self-compassion to enhance the general well-being of quarantined people in the pandemic.

Neuroanatomical abnormalities are reported in psychotic disorders compared to healthy controls; nevertheless, less is known about the role of familial liability to psychosis in morphological brain changes.

Using an exploratory voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analyses of the whole brain, we evaluated differences on GMVs across the whole brain among first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients, community-controls, and healthy siblings of patients to interrogate the role of familial liability.

Data were retrieved from a study (STREAM) conducted in Ribeirão Preto/SP Brazil. We included 71 first-episode psychosis patients (67.6% males, mean age±SD: 18.7±10.8), 24 unaffected siblings of patients (37.5% males, mean age±SD 30.8±10), and 36 controls (71.9% males, mean age±SD: 10±10.5). All magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were acquired on a 3T Philips scanner. VBM data were processed using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) software in MATLAB the MNI coordinate system. We performed exploratory voxel-wise comparisons of GMVs among the three groups using an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) model in SPM. Results were considered significant if they retained significance after family-wise error (FWE) correction for multiple comparisons (p<0.05). All the analyses were adjusted for age, sex, education in years, and total brain GMV.

The whole-brain exploratory analyses revealed no significant findings at the p<0.05 level (FWE-corrected). However, pairwise comparisons revealed significant changes betweeen FEP patients and their unaffected siblings. In particular, FEP patients had decreased volumes in the right side of the following regions (FEW = 0.047): superior temporal cortex, Rolandic operculum, insula, Heschel’s gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, superior temporal pole, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, amydgala, olfactory, inferior frontal operculum, cerebellum, posterior and medial orbital frontal cortex, rectus, medial temporal, medial frontal, and putamen. FEP patients also showed decreased volumes on the left side of the following regions (FWE 0.049): frontal superior medial gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, frontal middle part, caudate, anterior cingulate cortex, thalamus, and pallidum. Patients also showed widespread reduced GMV in various GMVs regions compared to controls at FWE<0.05. However, no difference was found between siblings and controls (FWE: >0.05).

The study of healthy siblings of patients with heritable illnesses could help in the understanding of the contribution of genetic background and environmental factors to illness state and predisposition. Differences between patients and their siblings could be attributed to the disease state, considering that the unaffected sibling group and unrelated healthy control group did not differ. We will next evaluate biological and environmental contributors to the reported differences.

Catatonia is a psychomotor syndrome characterized by various motor, affective and behavioral symptoms. It can occur as a cause of various underlying organic and psychiatric disorders. In Psychiatric nosology is used to specify a subtype of the disorder underlying.Unlike what was assumed in the past, today it is accepted that catatonia is more frequent in affective disorders than in schizophrenia. But despite this, diagnosis and treatment are still late in affective cases on many occasions.

-A case of catatonia is presented to review the diagnostic difficulties that can sometimes entail.-Review treatment algorithm.

We present the case of a 62-year-old woman, initially diagnosed of major depressive symptoms with psychotic symptoms, showing no response to different treatments, evolving to catatonia, which is diagnosed after screening for neurological and medical diseases.

The patient had an adequate evolution after the withdrawal of antipsychotics and the application of ECT (Electroconvulsive therapy).

- It is important to carry out an adequate screening, because many times the symptoms are caused by medical or neurological diseases.

-Catatonia has a good prognosis with an early treatment, but it may increase the risk of mortality after 5 days from the onset of symptoms.

-It is important to avoid the use of antipsychotics or other dopamine blockers. The use of benzodiazepines and ECT is indicated.
