We develop a theory to represent dislocations and disclinations in single crystals at the continuum (or mesoscopic) scale by directly modelling the defect densities as concentrated effects governed by the distribution theory. The displacement and rotation multi-valuedness is resolved by introducing the intrinsic and single-valued Frank and Burgers tensors from the distributional gradients of the strain field. Our approach provides a new understanding of the theory of line defects as developed by Kröner [10] and other authors [6, 9]. The fundamental identity relating the incompatibility tensor to the Frank and Burgers vectors (and which is a cornerstone of the theory of dislocations in single crystals) is proved in the 2D case under appropriate assumptions on the strain and strain curl growth in the vicinity of the assumed isolated defect lines. In general, our theory provides a rigorous framework for the treatment of crystal line defects at the mesoscopic scale and a basis to strengthen the theory of homogenisation from mesoscopic to macroscopic scale.

We investigate the extinction behaviour of a fourth order degenerate diffusion equation in a bounded domain, the model representing the flow of a viscous fluid over edges at which zero contact angle conditions hold. The extinction time may be finite or infinite and we distinguish between the two cases by identification of appropriate similarity solutions. In certain cases, an unphysical mass increase may occur for early time and the solution may become negative; an appropriate remedy for this is noted. Numerical simulations supporting the analysis are included.

This paper by a criminologist explains why it makes more sense to model criminal acts than to model criminals, how many preconceptions about crime can mislead modellers and offers some simple crime modelling ideas. Many opportunities for simulation now exist, and new opportunities for real-data modelling are emerging. The author suggests mathematical models of crime, including offender foraging for crime targets, as a rich area for future research.

This paper is concerned with some non-linear propagation phenomena for reaction–advection–diffusion equations with Kolmogrov–Petrovsky–Piskunov (KPP)-type non-linearities in general periodic domains or in infinite cylinders with oscillating boundaries. Having a variational formula for the minimal speed of propagation involving eigenvalue problems (proved in Berestycki, H., Hamel, F. & Nadirashvili, N. (2005) The speed of propagation for KPP type problems (periodic framework). J. Eur. Math. Soc. 7, 173–213), we consider the minimal speed of propagation as a function of diffusion factors, reaction factors and periodicity parameters. There we study the limits, the asymptotic behaviours and the variations of the considered functions with respect to these parameters. One of the sections deals with homogenization problem as an application of the results in the previous sections in order to find the limit of the minimal speed when the periodicity cell is very small.

We study the Muskat problem describing the vertical motion of two immiscible fluids in a two-dimensional homogeneous porous medium in an Lp-setting with p ∈ (1, ∞). The Sobolev space $W_p^s(\mathbb R)$ with s = 1+1/p is a critical space for this problem. We prove, for each s ∈ (1+1/p, 2) that the Rayleigh–Taylor condition identifies an open subset of $W_p^s(\mathbb R)$ within which the Muskat problem is of parabolic type. This enables us to establish the local well-posedness of the problem in all these subcritical spaces together with a parabolic smoothing property.

In a prior work, the authors proved a global bifurcation theorem for spatially periodic interfacial hydroelastic travelling waves on infinite depth, and computed such travelling waves. The formulation of the travelling wave problem used both analytically and numerically allows for waves with multi-valued height. The global bifurcation theorem required a one-dimensional kernel in the linearization of the relevant mapping, but for some parameter values, the kernel is instead two-dimensional. In the present work, we study these cases with two-dimensional kernels, which occur in resonant and non-resonant variants. We apply an implicit function theorem argument to prove existence of travelling waves in both of these situations. We compute the waves numerically as well, in both the resonant and non-resonant cases.

In this note we develop and analyse a system of equations describing a molten linear polymer being extruded in a capillary rheometer which is operating under the controlled condition that the mean velocity at the capillary inlet is maintained at a constant value. Slipping of the melt at the pipe wall is permitted and an evolution equation for the boundary slip parameter is postulated. The combined system governing the mean cross-sectional velocity and slip parameter is shown to exhibit relaxation oscillations similar to those observed in actual rheometers.

Consider a Hele-Shaw cell with the fluid (liquid) confined to an angular region by a solid boundary in the form of two half-lines meeting at an angle απ; if 0 < α < 1 we have flow in a corner, while if 1 < α [les ] 2 we have flow around a wedge. We suppose contact between the fluid and each of the lines forming the solid boundary to be along a single segment emanating from the vertex, so we have liquid at the vertex, and contemplate such a situation that has been produced by injection at a number of points into an initially empty cell. We show that, if we assume the pressure to be constant along the free boundary, the region occupied by the fluid is the image of a semidisc (a domain bounded by a semicircle and its diameter) in the ζ-plane under a conformal map given by a function of the form ζα times a rational function of ζ. The form of this rational function can be written down, and the parameters appearing in it then determined as the solution to a set of algebraic equations. Examples of such flows are given (including one which shows that, in a certain sense, injection can produce a cusp), and the limiting situation in the wedge configuration as one injection point is moved to infinity is also considered.

We study the behaviour of network diffusions based on the PageRank random walk from a set of seed nodes. These diffusions are known to reveal small, localized clusters (or communities), and also large macro-scale clusters by varying a parameter that has a dual-interpretation as an accuracy bound and as a regularization level. We propose a new method that quickly approximates the result of the diffusion for all values of this parameter. Our method efficiently generates an approximate solution path or regularization path associated with a PageRank diffusion, and it reveals cluster structures at multiple size-scales between small and large. We formally prove a runtime bound on this method that is independent of the size of the network, and we investigate multiple optimizations to our method that can be more practical in some settings. We demonstrate that these methods identify refined clustering structure on a number of real-world networks with up to 2 billion edges.

We study the behaviour of the steady-state voltage potentials in a material composed of a two-dimensional object surrounded by a rough thin layer and embedded in an ambient medium. The roughness of the layer is supposed to be ϵ-periodic, ϵ being the magnitude of the mean thickness of the layer. For ϵ tending to zero, we determine approximate transmission conditions in order to replace the rough thin layer by these conditions on the boundary of the interior material. This paper extends the previous works (Poignard, 2009, Math. Meth. Appl. Sci., vol. 32, pp. 435–453; Poignard et al., 2008, IEEE Trans. Magnet., vol. 44, no. 6, pp. 1154–1157) of the third author, which deal with smooth thin layers.

In this paper, we show that there exists a critical number that stabilises the Reissner–Mindlin–Timoshenko system with frictional dissipation acting only on the equation for the transverse displacement. We identify that the Reissner–Mindlin–Timoshenko system has two speed characteristics v12 := K/ρ1 and v22 := D/ρ2 and we show that the system is exponentially stable if only if

In the general case, we prove that the system is polynomially stable with optimal decay rate. Numerical experiments using finite differences are given to confirm our analytical results. Our numerical results are qualitatively in agreement with the corresponding results from dynamical in infinite dimensional.

This article is the third one in a series of papers by the authors on vanishing-viscosity solutions to rate-independent damage systems. While in the first two papers (Knees, D. et al. 2013 Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci.23(4), 565–616; Knees, D. et al. 2015 Nonlinear Anal. Real World Appl.24, 126–162) the assumptions on the spatial domain Ω were kept as general as possible (i.e., non-smooth domain with mixed boundary conditions), we assume here that ∂Ω is smooth and that the type of boundary conditions does not change. This smoother setting allows us to derive enhanced regularity spatial properties both for the displacement and damage fields. Thus, we are in a position to work with a stronger solution notion at the level of the viscous approximating system. The vanishing-viscosity analysis then leads us to obtain the existence of a stronger solution concept for the rate-independent limit system. Furthermore, in comparison to [18, 19], in our vanishing-viscosity analysis we do not switch to an artificial arc-length parameterization of the trajectories but we stay with the true physical time. The resulting concept of Balanced Viscosity solution to the rate-independent damage system thus encodes a more explicit characterization of the system behaviour at time discontinuities of the solution.

A model for the dynamic thermomechanical behavior of a viscoelastic beam which is in frictional contact with a rigid rotating wheel is presented. It describes a simple braking system in which the wheel comes to a stop as a result of the frictional traction generated by the beam. Friction is modelled with a temperature and slip rate dependent coefficient of friction. Frictional heat generation is taken into account as well as the wheel temperature evolution, and the wear of the beam's contacting end. The model is formulated as a variational inequality. A FEM numerical scheme for the model is described, implemented, and the results of numerical simulations are shown.

We solve the free boundary problem for the dynamics of a cylindrical, axisymmetric viscoelastic filament stretching in a gravity-driven extensional flow for the Upper Convected Maxwell and Oldroyd-B constitutive models. Assuming the axial stress in the filament has a spatial dependence provides the simplest coupling of viscoelastic effects to the motion of the filament, and yields a closed system of ODEs with an exact solution for the stretch rate and filament thickness satisfied by both constitutive models. This viscoelastic solution, which is a generalization of the exact solution for Newtonian filaments, converges to the Newtonian power-law scaling as $t \rightarrow \infty$. Based on the exact solution, we identify two regimes of dynamical behavior called the weakly- and strongly-viscoelastic limits. We compare the viscoelastic solution to measurements of the thinning filament that forms behind a falling drop for several semi-dilute (strongly-viscoelastic) polymer solutions. We find the exact solution correctly predicts the time-dependence of the filament diameter in all of the experiments. As $t \rightarrow \infty$, observations of the filament thickness follow the Newtonian scaling $1/\sqrt{t}$. The transition from viscoelastic to Newtonian scaling in the filament thickness is coupled to a stretch-to-coil transition of the polymer molecules.

The existence of classical solutions with a free boundary changing its topology in time is proved for the multi-dimensional Hele-Shaw problem. We prove that, if some symmetry and monotonicity conditions on the problem data hold, then a cusp, arising at the contact between two free boundary components, disappears instantly and the free boundary becomes smooth and singly-connected.

We consider the problem of modelling the flow of a slightly compressible fluid in a periodic fractured medium assuming that the fissures are thin with respect to the block size. As a starting point we used a formulation applied to a system comprising a fractured porous medium made of blocks and fractures separated by a thin layer which is considered as an interface. The inter-relationship between these three characteristics comprise the triple porosity model. The microscopic model consists of the usual equation describing Darcy flow with the permeability being highly discontinuous. Over the matrix domain, the permeability is scaled by $(\varepsilon \delta)^2$, where $\varepsilon$ is the size of a typical porous block, with $\delta$ representing the relative size of the fracture. We then consider a model with Robin type transmission conditions: a jump of the density across the interface block-fracture is taken into account and proportional to the flux by the mean of a function $(\varepsilon\delta)^{-\gamma}$, where $\gamma$ is a parameter. Using two-scale convergence, we get homogenized models which govern the global behaviour of the flow as $\varepsilon$ and $\delta$ tend to zero. The resulting homogenized problem is a dual-porosity type model that contains a term representing memory effects for $\gamma\le 1$, and it is a single porosity model with effective coefficients for $\gamma >1$.

In this paper, three iterative procedures (Landweber-Fridman, conjugate gradient and minimal error methods) for obtaining a stable solution to the Cauchy problem in slow viscous flows are presented and compared. A section is devoted to the numerical investigations of these algorithms. There, we use the boundary element method together with efficient stopping criteria for ceasing the iteration process in order to obtain stable solutions.

In this work we describe some aspects of the dynamics of the Cahn–Hilliard equation. In particular, we consider the dynamics of ‘bubble’ solutions that is spherical interfaces which move superslowly towards the boundary without changing their shape. We show for the Cahn–Hilliard that the bubble drifts towards the closest point on the boundary provided it is sufficiently small. This is contrasted with the related mass conserving Allen–Cahn equation where size is not an issue.

The equations describing the pulsating output of a laser containing a saturable absorber are investigated numerically and analytically. The laser admits a singular Hopf bifurcation to a nearly vertical branch of periodic solutions. Using asymptotic methods, we determine a simplified problem that describes the transition from harmonic to pulsating oscillations as the bifurcation parameter is changed. This transition occurs in a layer bounded by the Hopf bifurcation point, and by a critical point near which the branch of solutions becomes vertical.

In a recent paper devoted to the study of the superheating field attached to a semi-infinite superconductor, Chapman [1] constructs a family of approximate solutions of the Ginzburg–Landau system. This construction, based on a matching procedure, implicitly uses the existence of a family of solutions depending on a parameter c∈IR of the Painlevé equation in a semi-infinite interval (0, +∞)

with a Neumann condition at 0

and having a prescribed behaviour at +∞

In this paper we prove the existence of such a family of solutions and investigate its properties. Moreover, we prove that the second coefficient in Chapman's expansion of the superheating field is finite.
