An effective algorithmic method is presented for finding the local conservation laws for partial differential equations with any number of independent and dependent variables. The method does not require the use or existence of a variational principle and reduces the calculation of conservation laws to solving a system of linear determining equations similar to that for finding symmetries. An explicit construction formula is derived which yields a conservation law for each solution of the determining system. In the first of two papers (Part I), examples of nonlinear wave equations are used to exhibit the method. Classification results for conservation laws of these equations are obtained. In a second paper (Part II), a general treatment of the method is given.

In this paper we prove the existence of solutions of the Keller–Segel model in chemotaxis, which blow up in finite or infinite time. This is done without assuming any symmetry properties of the solution.

This paper gives a general treatment and proof of the direct conservation law method presented in Part I (see Anco & Bluman [3]). In particular, the treatment here applies to finding the local conservation laws of any system of one or more partial differential equations expressed in a standard Cauchy-Kovalevskaya form. A summary of the general method and its effective computational implementation is also given.

Image inpainting is an image restoration problem, in which image models play a critical role, as demonstrated by Chan, Kang & Shen's [12] recent inpainting schemes based on the bounded variation and the elastica [11] image models. In this paper, we propose two novel inpainting models based on the Mumford–Shah image model [41], and its high order correction – the Mumford–Shah–Euler image model. We also present their efficient numerical realization based on the Γ-convergence approximations of Ambrosio & Tortorelli [2, 3] and De Giorgi [21].

The article presents a survey of mathematical problems, techniques and challenges arising in thermoacoustic tomography and its sibling photoacoustic tomography.

The generalized pantograph equation y′(t) = Ay(t) + By(qt) + Cy′(qt), y(0) = y0, where q ∈ (0, 1), has numerous applications, as well as being a useful paradigm for more general functional-differential equations with monotone delay. Although many special cases have been already investigated extensively, a general theory for this equation is lacking–its development and exposition is the purpose of the present paper. After deducing conditions on A, B, C ∈ ℂd×d that are equivalent to well-posedness, we investigate the expansion of y in Dirichlet series. This provides a very fruitful form for the investigation of asymptotic behaviour, and we duly derive conditions for limt⋅→∞y(t) = 0. The behaviour on the stability boundary possesses no comprehensive explanation, but we are able to prove that, along an important portion of that boundary, y is almost periodic and, provided that q is rational, it is almost rotationally symmetric. The paper also addresses itself to a detailed analysis of the scalar equation y′(t) = by(qt), y(0) = 1, to high-order pantograph equations, to a phenomenon, similar to resonance, that occurs for specific configurations of eigenvalues of A, and to the equation Y′(t) = AY(t) + Y(qt) B, Y(0) = Y0.

We show by using formal asymptotics that the zero level set of the solution to the Cahn–Hilliard equation with a concentration dependent mobility approximates to lowest order in ɛ. an interface evolving according to the geometric motion,

(where V is the normal velocity, Δ8 is the surface Laplacian and κ is the mean curvature of the interface), both in the deep quench limit and when the temperature θ is where є2 is the coefficient of gradient energy. Equation (0.1) may be viewed as motion by surface diffusion, and as a higher-order analogue of motion by mean curvature predicted by the bistable reaction-diffusion equation.

The aim of this paper is to provide a survey on the recent development in level set methods in inverse problems and optimal design. We give introductions on the general features of such problems involving geometries and on the general framework of the level set method. In subsequent parts we discuss shape sensitivity analysis and its relation to level set methods, various approaches on constructing optimization algorithms based on the level set approach, and special tools needed for the application of level set based optimization methods to ill-posed problems. Furthermore, we provide a review on numerical methods important in this context, and give an overview of applications treated with level set methods. Finally, we provide a discussion of the most challenging and interesting open problems in this field, that might be of interest for scientists who plan to start future research in this field.

Mathematical models for the prediction of the hydrodynamic pressure distribution and the force on a body entering liquid are investigated. Particular attention is paid to analytical models which are based on the velocity potential given by the classical Wagner theory. Formal use of the Wagner theory provides the loads on an entering body, which are higher than the measured ones. To improve the predictions, the higher order terms in the Bernoulli equation are taken into account within the generalized Wagner model and the Logvinovich model. It is shown that the Logvinovich model corresponds better to the experimental data than the generalized Wagner model. A rational derivation of the Logvinovich model is given in the paper for the two-dimensional case. The analytical models are tested against both numerical and experimental results.

A mathematical analysis is carried out for the Cahn–Hilliard equation where the free energy takes the form of a double well potential function with infinite walls. Existence and uniqueness are proved for a weak formulation of the problem which possesses a Lyapunov functional. Regularity results are presented for the weak formulation, and consideration is given to the asymptotic behaviour as the time becomes infinite. An investigation of the associated stationary problem is undertaken proving the existence of a nontrivial stationary solution and further regularity results for any stationary solution. Stationary solutions are constructed in one and two dimensions; a formula for the number of stationary solutions in one dimension is derived. It is then natural to study the asymptotic behaviour as the phenomenological parameter λ→0, the main result being that the interface between the two phases has minimal area.

We discuss the one-phase Hele–Shaw problem in two space dimensions. We review exact solutions in the zero-surface-tension case, giving a unified account of the Schwarz function and conformal mapping approaches. We discuss the extension of the former method to the cases in which surface tension or ‘kinetic undercooling’ terms apply on the moving boundary, and we give some conjectures on the resulting singularity structure. Finally, we give a new interpretation of the linear stability analysis of the zero-surface-tension problem, and we suggest a possible regularization of ill-posed problems by the imposition of a unilateral constraint on the moving boundary.

We present an $n$-population generalization of the Lighthill–Whitham and Richards traffic flow model. This model is analytically interesting because of several non-standard features. For instance, it leads to non-classical shocks and enjoys an unexpected stability in spite of the presence of umbilic points. Furthermore, while satisfying all the minimal ‘common sense’ requirements, it also allows for a description of phenomena often neglected by other models, such as overtaking.

The curse of dimensionality is commonly encountered in numerical partial differential equations (PDE), especially when uncertainties have to be modelled into the equations as random coefficients. However, very often the variability of physical quantities derived from PDE can be captured by a few features on the space of the coefficient fields. Based on such observation, we propose using neural network to parameterise the physical quantity of interest as a function of input coefficients. The representability of such quantity using a neural network can be justified by viewing the neural network as performing time evolution to find the solutions to the PDE. We further demonstrate the simplicity and accuracy of the approach through notable examples of PDEs in engineering and physics.

We study the interior spike solutions to a steady state problem of the shadow system of the Gierer–Meinhardt system arising from biological pattern formation. We first show that at a non-degenerate peak point the interior spike solution is locally unique, and then we establish the spectrum estimates of the associated linearized operator. We also prove that the corresponding solution to the shadow system is unstable. Furthermore, the metastability of such solutions is analysed.

In this paper a generalized model for the growth of avascular tumours is presented. The formulation leads naturally to the incorporation of free boundaries which define the outer tumour surface explicitly and various inner surfaces implicitly. A combination of numerical simulations, asymptotic analysis and perturbation techniques is used to study the model and yields results, which agree well with experimentally-observed phenomena.

We consider the distinguished limits of the phase field equations and prove that the corresponding free boundary problem is attained in each case. These include the classical Stefan model, the surface tension model (with or without kinetics), the surface tension model with zero specific heat, the two phase Hele–Shaw, or quasi-static, model. The Hele–Shaw model is also a limit of the Cahn–Hilliard equation, which is itself a limit of the phase field equations. Also included in the distinguished limits is the motion by mean curvature model that is a limit of the Allen–Cahn equation, which can in turn be attained from the phase field equations.

We present a model of sedimentation in a subsiding fluvio-deltaic basin with steady sediment supply and unsteady base level. We demonstrate that mass transfer in a fluvio-deltaic basin is analogous to heat transfer in a generalized Stefan problem, where the basin's shoreline represents the phase front. We obtain a numerical solution to the governing equations for sediment transport and deposition in this system via an extension of a deforming-grid technique from the phase-change literature. Through modification of the heat-balance integral method, we also develop a semi-analytical solution, which agrees well with the numerical solution. We construct a space of dimensionless groups for the basin and perform a systematic exploration of this space to illustrate the influence of each group on the shoreline trajectory. Our model results suggest that all subsiding fluvio-deltaic basins exhibit a standard autoretreat shoreline trajectory in which a brief period of shoreline advance is followed by an extended period of shoreline retreat. Base-level cycling produces a shoreline response that varies relative to the autoretreat signal. Contrary to previous studies, we fail to observe either a strong phase shift between shoreline and base level or a pronounced attenuation of the amplitude of shoreline response as the frequency of base-level cycling decreases. However, the amplitude of shoreline response to base-level cycling is a function of the basin's age.

We study equilibrium liquid crystal configurations in three-dimensional geometries, within the continuum Landau-de Gennes theory. We obtain explicit bounds for the equilibrium scalar order parameters in terms of the temperature and material-dependent constants. We explicitly quantify the temperature regimes where the Landau-de Gennes predictions match and the temperature regimes where the Landau-de Gennes predictions do not match the probabilistic second-moment definition of the Q-tensor order parameter. The regime of agreement may be interpreted as the regime of validity of the Landau-de Gennes theory since the Landau-de Gennes theory predicts large values of the equilibrium scalar order parameters – larger than unity, in the low-temperature regime. We discuss a modified Landau-de Gennes energy functional which yields physically realistic values of the equilibrium scalar order parameters in all temperature regimes.

Ventricular assist devices (VADs) provide long- and short-term support to chronically ill heart disease patients; these devices are expected to match the remarkable functionality of the natural heart, which makes their design a very challenging task. Blood pumps, the principal component of the VADs, must operate over a wide range of flow rates and pressure heads and minimise the damage to blood cells in the process. They should also be small to allow easy implantation in both children and adults. Mathematical methods and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have recently emerged as powerful design tools in this context; a review of the recent advances in the field is presented here. This review focusses on the CFD-based design strategies applied to blood flow in blood pumps and other blood-handling devices. Both simulation methods for blood flow and blood damage models are reviewed. The literature is put into context with a discussion of the chronological development in the field. The review is illustrated with specific examples drawn from our group's Galerkin/least squares (GLS) finite-element simulations of the basic Newtonian flow problem for the continuous-flow centrifugal GYRO blood pump. The GLS formulation is outlined, and modifications to include models that better represent blood rheology are shown. Haemocompatibility analysis of the pump is reviewed in the context of haemolysis estimations based on different blood damage models. Our strain-based blood damage model that accounts for the viscoleasticity associated with the red blood cells is reviewed in detail. The viability of design improvement based on trial and error and complete simulation-based design optimisation schemes are also discussed.

The paper compares computational aspects of four approaches to compute conservation laws of single Differential Equations (DEs) or systems of them, ODEs and PDEs. The only restriction, required by two of the four corresponding computer algebra programs, is that each DE has to be solvable for a leading derivative. Extra constraints for the conservation laws can be specified. Examples include new conservation laws that are non-polynomial in the functions, that have an explicit variable dependence and families of conservation laws involving arbitrary functions. The following equations are investigated in examples: Ito, Liouville, Burgers, Kadomtsev–Petviashvili, Karney–Sen–Chu–Verheest, Boussinesq, Tzetzeica, Benney.
