A classical result in ergodic theory says that there always exists a topological model for any factor map ${\it\pi}:(X,{\mathcal{X}},{\it\mu},T)\rightarrow (Y,{\mathcal{Y}},{\it\nu},S)$ of ergodic systems. That is, there are some topological factor map $\hat{{\it\pi}}:(\hat{X},\hat{T})\rightarrow ({\hat{Y}},{\hat{S}})$ and invariant measures $\hat{{\it\mu}}$, $\hat{{\it\nu}}$ such that the diagram

A classic result due to Furstenberg is the strict ergodicity of the horocycle flow for a compact hyperbolic surface. Strict ergodicity is unique ergodicity with respect to a measure of full support, and therefore it implies minimality. The horocycle flow has been previously studied on minimal foliations by hyperbolic surfaces on closed manifolds, where it is known not to be minimal in general. In this paper, we prove that for the special case of Riemannian foliations, strict ergodicity of the horocycle flow still holds. This, in particular, proves that this flow is minimal, which establishes a conjecture proposed by Matsumoto. The main tool is a theorem due to Coudène, which he presented as an alternative proof for the surface case. It applies to two continuous flows defining a measure-preserving action of the affine group of the line on a compact metric space, precisely matching the foliated setting. In addition, we briefly discuss the application of Coudène’s theorem to other kinds of foliations.

Let A be a unital simple -algebra of real rank zero. Given an isomorphismγ1:K1(A)→K1(A), we show that there is an automorphism α:A→A such that α*1=γ1 and α has the tracial Rokhlin property. Consequently, the crossed product is a simple unital AH-algebra with real rank zero. We also show that automorphisms with the Rokhlin property can be constructed from minimal homeomorphisms on a connected compact metric space.

We establish pointwise ergodic theorems for a large class of natural averages on simple Lie groups of real rank one, going well beyond the radial case considered previously. The proof is based on a new approach to pointwise ergodic theorems, which is independent of spectral theory. Instead, the main new ingredient is the use of direct geometric arguments in hyperbolic space.

Consider a closed, smooth manifold M of non-positive curvature. Write $p:\textit{UM}\rightarrow M$ for the unit tangent bundle over M and let ${\mathcal R}_>$ denote the subset consisting of all vectors of higher rank. This subset is closed and invariant under the geodesic flow $\phi$ on UM. We will define the structured dimension s-dim $\mathcal{R}_>$ which, essentially, is the dimension of the set $p(\mathcal{R}_>)$ of base points of $\mathcal{R}_>$.

The main result of this paper holds for manifolds with s-dim $\mathcal{R}_><\dim M/2$: for every $\epsilon>0$, there is an $\epsilon$-dense, flow invariant, closed subset $\Xi_\epsilon\subset \textit{UM}\backslash{\mathcal{R}}_>$ such that $p(\Xi_\epsilon)=M$.

We show that the ordered Matsumoto K0-group of a substitutive system is derivable from the ordered Čech cohomology of a simple ‘augmentation’ of the tiling space associated with the substitution. Besides supplying a topological interpretation of the Matsumoto K0-group, this leads to finer invariants of the flow equivalence class of a substitutive system.

Let $G={\rm SL_2({\bf R})}$ (or $G={\rm SO}(n,1)$) act ergodically on a probability space $(X,m)$. We consider the ergodic properties of the flow $(X,m,\{g_t\})$, where $\{g_t\}$ is a Cartan subgroup of $G$. The geodesic flow on a compact Riemann surface is an example of such a flow; here $X=G/\Gamma$ is a transitive $G$-space, $G={\rm SL_2({\bf R})}$ and $\Gamma\subset G$ is a lattice. In this case the flow is Bernoullian.

For the general ergodic $G$-action, the flow $(X,m,\{g_t\})$ is always a $K$-flow, however there are examples in which it is not Bernoullian.

We consider the problem of the asymptotic size of the random maximum-weight matching of a sparse random graph, which we translate into dynamics of the operator in the space of distribution functions. A tight condition for the uniqueness of the globally attracting fixed point is provided, which extends the result of Karp and Sipser [Maximum matchings in sparse random graphs. 22nd Ann. Symp. on Foundations of Computer Science (Nashville, TN, 28–30 October, 1981). IEEE, New York, 1981, pp. 364–375] from deterministic weight distributions (Dirac measures μ) to general ones. Given a probability measure μ which corresponds to the weight distribution of a link of a random graph, we form a positive linear operator Φμ (convolution) on distribution functions and then analyze a family of its exponents, with parameter λ, which corresponds to the connectivity of a sparse random graph. The operator 𝕋 relates the distribution F on the subtrees to the distribution 𝕋F on the node of the tree by 𝕋F=exp (−λΦμF). We prove that for every probability measure μ and every λ<e, there exists a unique globally attracting fixed point of the operator; the probability measure corresponding to this fixed point can then be used to compute the expected maximum-weight matching on a sparse random graph. This result is called the e-cutoff phenomenon. For deterministic distributions and λ>e, there is no fixed point attractor. We further establish that the uniqueness of the invariant measure of the underlying operator is not a monotone property of the average connectivity; this parallels similar non-monotonicity results in the statistical physics context.

We define a random iterated function system (RIFS) to be a finite set of (deterministic) iterated function systems (IFSs) acting on the same metric space. For a given RIFS, there exists a continuum of random attractors corresponding to each sequence of deterministic IFSs. Much work has been done on computing the ‘almost sure’ dimensions of these random attractors. Here we compute the typical dimensions (in the sense of Baire) and observe that our results are in stark contrast to those obtained using the probabilistic approach. Furthermore, we examine the typical Hausdorff and packing measures of the random attractors and give examples to illustrate some of the strange phenomena that can occur. The only restriction we impose on the maps is that they are bi-Lipschitz and we obtain our dimension results without assuming any separation conditions.

In this paper, we show local smooth rigidity for higher rank ergodic nilpotent action by toral automorphisms. In former papers all examples for actions enjoying the local smooth rigidity phenomenon are higher rank and have no rank-one factors. In this paper we give examples of smooth rigidity of actions having rank-one factors. The method is a generalization of the KAM (Kolmogorov–Arnold–Moser) iterative scheme.

Michael Handel proved in [A fixed-point theorem for planar homeomorphisms. Topology38 (1999), 235–264] the existence of a fixed point for an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the open unit disk that can be extended to the closed disk, provided that it has points whose orbits form an oriented cycle of links at infinity. Later, Patrice Le Calvez gave a different proof of this theorem based only on Brouwer theory and plane topology arguments in [Une nouvelle preuve du théorème de point fixe de Handel. Geom. Topol.10(2006), 2299–2349]. These methods improved the result by proving the existence of a simple closed curve of index 1. We give a new, simpler proof of this improved version of the theorem and generalize it to non-oriented cycles of links at infinity.

One can describe isomorphism of two compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of the same genus by a measure-theoretic property: a chosen isomorphism of their fundamental groups corresponds to a homeomorphism on the boundary of the Poincaré disc that is absolutely continuous for Lebesgue measure if and only if the surfaces are isomorphic. In this paper, we find the corresponding statement for Mumford curves, a non-Archimedean analogue of Riemann surfaces. In this case, the mere absolute continuity of the boundary map (for Schottky uniformization and the corresponding Patterson–Sullivan measure) only implies isomorphism of the special fibers of the Mumford curves, and the absolute continuity needs to be enhanced by a finite list of conditions on the harmonic measures on the boundary (certain non-Archimedean distributions constructed by Schneider and Teitelbaum) to guarantee an isomorphism of the Mumford curves. The proof combines a generalization of a rigidity theorem for trees due to Coornaert, the existence of a boundary map by a method of Floyd, with a classical theorem of Babbage, Enriques and Petri on equations for the canonical embedding of a curve.

We study the action of the affine group $G$ of $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ on the space $X_{k,\,d}$ of $k$-dimensional affine subspaces. Given a compactly supported Zariski dense probability measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ on $G$, we show that $X_{k,d}$ supports a $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$-stationary measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ if and only if the $(k+1)\text{th}$ Lyapunov exponent of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ is strictly negative. In particular, when $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ is symmetric, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ exists if and only if $2k\geq d$.

We consider partially hyperbolic attractors for non-singular endomorphisms admitting an invariant stable bundle and a positively invariant cone field with non-uniform cone expansion at a positive Lebesgue measure set of points. We prove volume lemmas for both Lebesgue measure on the topological basin of the attractor and the SRB measure supported on the attractor. As a consequence, under a mild assumption we prove exponential large-deviation bounds for the convergence of Birkhoff averages associated to continuous observables with respect to the SRB measure.

In this note, we deduce a partial answer to the question in the title. In particular, we show that asymptotically almost all bi-Perron algebraic units whose characteristic polynomial has degree at most $2n$ do not correspond to dilatations of pseudo-Anosov maps on a closed orientable surface of genus $n$ for $n\geq 10$. As an application of the argument, we also obtain a statement on the number of closed geodesics of the same length in the moduli space of area-one abelian differentials for low-genus cases.

Let $Q$ be a closed manifold admitting a locally free action of a compact Lie group $G$. In this paper, we study the properties of geodesic flows on $Q$ given by suitable G-invariant Riemannian metrics. In particular, we will be interested in the existence of geodesics that are closed up to the action of some element in the group $G$, since they project to closed magnetic geodesics on the quotient orbifold $Q/G$.

We give a complete characterization of the compact metric dynamical systems that appear as boundaries of the canonical compactification of a locally compact countable state mixing Markov shift. Consider such a compact metric dynamical system. Then there is a pair of non-conjugate Markov shifts with conjugate canonical compactifications, one of which has the given compact system as canonical boundary.

We consider a construction of ${C}^{\ast } $-algebras from continuous piecewise monotone maps on the circle which generalizes the crossed product construction for homeomorphisms and more generally the construction of Renault, Deaconu and Anantharaman-Delaroche for local homeomorphisms. Assuming that the map is surjective and not locally injective we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the simplicity of the ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra and show that it is then a Kirchberg algebra. We provide tools for the calculation of the $K$-theory groups and turn them into an algorithmic method for Markov maps.

We investigate the link between postcritical behaviors and the relations of saddle basic sets for Axiom A polynomial skew products on $\mathbb {C}^2$, and characterize various properties concerning the three kinds of accumulation sets defined by DeMarco and Hruska [Axiom A polynomial skew products of $\mathbb {C}^2$ and their postcritical sets. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.28(2008), 1749–1779] in terms of the saddle basic sets. We also give a new example of higher degree.
