We consider isometric actions of lattices in semisimple algebraic groups on (possibly non-compact) homogeneous spaces with (possibly infinite) invariant Radon measure. We assume that the action has a dense orbit, and demonstrate two novel and non-classical dynamical phenomena that arise in this context. The first is the existence of a mean ergodic theorem even when the invariant measure is infinite; this implies the existence of an associated limiting distribution, which can be different from the underlying invariant measure. The second is uniform quantitative equidistribution of all orbits in the space, which follows from a quantitative mean ergodic theorem for such actions. In turn, these results imply quantitative ratio ergodic theorems for isometric actions of lattices. This sheds some unexpected light on certain equidistribution problems posed by Arnol’d [Arnol’d’s Problems. Springer, Berlin, 2004] and also on the ratio equidistribution conjecture for dense subgroups of isometries formulated by Kazhdan [Uniform distribution on a plane. Tr. Mosk. Mat. Obs. 14 (1965), 299–305]. We briefly mention the general problem regarding ergodic theorems for actions of lattices on homogeneous spaces and its solution given by Gorodnik and Nevo [Duality principle and ergodic theorems, in preparation], and present a number of examples to demonstrate our results. Finally, we also prove results on quantitative equidistribution for absolutely continuous averages in transitive actions.

We prove that if $n\geq 2$, then there is no $C^{1}$-diffeomorphism $f$ of the $n$-torus such that $f$ is semi-conjugate to a minimal translation and its wandering domains are geometric balls. This improves a recent result of Navas, who proved it assuming $C^{n+1}$ regularity of $f$.

The topological entropy of a transformation is expressed in terms of partitions of unity. The transverse entropy of a flow tangential to a foliation is defined and expresed in a similar way. The geometric entropy of a foliation of a Riemannian manifold is compared with the transverse entropy of its geodesic flow.

Poincare's recurrence theorem says that, given a measurable subset of a space on which a finite measure-preserving transformation acts, almost every point of the subset returns to the subset after a finite number of applications of the transformation. Moreover, Kac's recurrence theorem refines this result by showing that the average of the first return times to the subset over the subset is at most one, with equality in the ergodic case. In particular, the first return time function to any measurable set is integrable. By considering the supremum over all p ≥ 1 for which the first return time function is p-integrable for all open sets, we obtain a number for each almost-topological dynamical system, which we call the return time invariant. It is easy to show that this invariant is non-decreasing under finitary homomorphism. We use the invariant to construct a continuum number of countable state Markov shifts with a given entropy (and hence measure-theoretically isomorphic) which are pairwise non-finitarily isomorphic.

We present several applications of the weak specification property and certain topological Markov properties, recently introduced by Barbieri, García-Ramos, and Li [Markovian properties of continuous group actions: algebraic actions, entropy and the homoclinic group. Adv. Math. 397 (2022), 52], and implied by the pseudo-orbit tracing property, for general expansive group actions on compact spaces. First we show that any expansive action of a countable amenable group on a compact metrizable space satisfying the weak specification and strong topological Markov properties satisfies the Moore property, that is, every surjective endomorphism of such dynamical system is pre-injective. This together with an earlier result of Li (where the strong topological Markov property is not needed) of the Myhill property [Garden of Eden and specification. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 39 (2019), 3075–3088], which we also re-prove here, establishes the Garden of Eden theorem for all expansive actions of countable amenable groups on compact metrizable spaces satisfying the weak specification and strong topological Markov properties. We hint how to easily generalize this result even for uncountable amenable groups and general compact, not necessarily metrizable, spaces. Second, we generalize the recent result of Cohen [The large scale geometry of strongly aperiodic subshifts of finite type. Adv. Math. 308 (2017), 599–626] that any subshift of finite type of a finitely generated group having at least two ends has weakly periodic points. We show that every expansive action of such a group having a certain Markov topological property, again implied by the pseudo-orbit tracing property, has a weakly periodic point. If it has additionally the weak specification property, the set of such points is dense.

The aim of this paper is to prove that any transitive constant-to-one extension of a coded system is still coded. The corresponding statement for sofic systems is false, and it is an open question whether it is true for subshifts of finite type.

Let M be a two-dimensional, compact manifold and g:Μ→ΜM be a diffeomorphism with a hyperbolic chain recurrent set. We find restrictions on the reduced zeta function p(t) of anyzero-dimensional basic set of g. If deg (p(t)) is odd, then p(1) = 0 (in ). Since there are infinitely many subshifts of finite type whose reduced zeta functions do not satisfy these restrictions, there are infinitely many subshifts which cannot be basic sets for any diffeomorphism of any surface.

In this paper, structural stability of discrete-time linear random dynamical systems is studied. A random dynamical system is called structurally stable with respect to a random norm if it is topologically conjugate to any random dynamical system which is sufficiently close to it in this norm. We prove that a discrete-time linear random dynamical system is structurally stable with respect to its Lyapunov norms if and only if it is hyperbolic.

We generalize the polynomial Szemerédi theorem to intersective polynomials over the ring of integers of an algebraic number field, by which we mean polynomials having a common root modulo every ideal. This leads to the existence of new polynomial configurations in positive-density subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^{m}$ and strengthens and extends recent results of Bergelson, Leibman and Lesigne [Intersective polynomials and the polynomial Szemerédi theorem. Adv. Math.219(1) (2008), 369–388] on polynomials over the integers.

Let $(X,f)$ be a dynamical system, where $X$ is a perfect Polish space and $f:X\rightarrow X$ is a continuous map. In this paper we study the invariant dependent sets of a given relation string ${\it\alpha}=\{R_{1},R_{2},\ldots \}$ on $X$. To do so, we need the relation string ${\it\alpha}$ to satisfy some dynamical properties, and we say that ${\it\alpha}$ is $f$-invariant (see Definition 3.1). We show that if ${\it\alpha}=\{R_{1},R_{2},\ldots \}$ is an $f$-invariant relation string and $R_{n}\subset X^{n}$ is a residual subset for each $n\geq 1$, then there exists a dense Mycielski subset $B\subset X$ such that the invariant subset $\bigcup _{i=0}^{\infty }f^{i}B$ is a dependent set of $R_{n}$ for each $n\geq 1$ (see Theorems 5.4 and 5.5). This result extends Mycielski’s theorem (see Theorem A) when $X$ is a perfect Polish space (see Corollary 5.6). Furthermore, in two applications of the main results, we simplify the proofs of known results on chaotic sets in an elegant way.

We study the motion of a particle on a Riemannian 2-torus under the influence of a magnetic field and a Gaussian thermostat. We prove a Hopf type rigidity for this dynamical system without conjugate points.

We consider skew products on $M\times \mathbb{T}^{2}$, where $M$ is the two-sphere or the two-torus, which are partially hyperbolic and semi-conjugate to an Axiom A diffeomorphism. This class of dynamics includes the open sets of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$-non-stable systems introduced by Abraham and Smale [Non-genericity of Ł-stability. Global Analysis (Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics, XIV (Berkeley 1968)). American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1970, pp. 5–8.] and Shub [Topological Transitive Diffeomorphisms in$T^{4}$ (Lecture Notes in Mathematics, 206). Springer, Berlin, 1971, pp. 39–40]. We present sufficient conditions, both on the skew products and the potentials, for the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states, and discuss their statistical stability.

We study sets of measure-preserving transformations on Lebesgue spaces with continuous measures taking into account extreme scales of variations of weak mixing. It is shown that the generic dynamical behaviour depends on subsequences of time going to infinity. We also present corresponding generic sets of (probability) invariant measures with respect to topological shifts over finite alphabets and Axiom A diffeomorphisms over topologically mixing basic sets.

In this paper we study topological properties of the right action by translation of the Weyl chamber flow on the space of Weyl chambers. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for topological mixing.

We consider a family of higher-dimensional non-commutative tori, which are twisted analogues of the algebras of continuous functions on ordinary tori and their Toeplitz extensions. Just as solenoids are inverse limits of tori, our Toeplitz non-commutative solenoids are direct limits of the Toeplitz extensions of non-commutative tori. We consider natural dynamics on these Toeplitz algebras, and we compute the equilibrium states for these dynamics. We find a large simplex of equilibrium states at each positive inverse temperature, parametrized by the probability measures on an (ordinary) solenoid.

Consider a tiling $\mathcal T$ of the two-dimensional Euclidean space made with copies up to translation of a finite number of polygons meeting each other full edge to full edge. In this paper, we prove that, associated with $\mathcal T$, there exists a tiling of a (compact) translation surface made with copies up to translation of some of the polygons used to construct $\mathcal T$. Furthermore, when $\mathcal T$ is repetitive, there exists a tiling of a translation surface, made with copies up to translation of arbitrarily large polygons chosen in a finite collection of patches of $\mathcal T$; each of these patches contain copies of all the polygons used to construct $\mathcal T$.

Let $X$ be a compact metrizable group and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ be a countable group acting on $X$ by continuous group automorphisms. We give sufficient conditions under which the dynamical system $(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4})$ is surjunctive, i.e. every injective continuous map $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}:X\rightarrow X$ commuting with the action of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ is surjective.

We construct an infinite-dimensional compact metric space $X$, which is a closed subset of $\mathbb{S}\times \mathbb{H}$, where $\mathbb{S}$ is the unit circle and $\mathbb{H}$ is the Hilbert cube, and a skew-product map $F$ acting on $X$ such that $(X,F)$ is Li–Yorke sensitive but possesses at most countable scrambled sets. This disproves the conjecture of Akin and Kolyada that Li–Yorke sensitivity implies Li–Yorke chaos [Akin and Kolyada. Li–Yorke sensitivity. Nonlinearity16, (2003), 1421–1433].

In the present article, we introduce beta-expansions in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ of $p$-adic integers. We characterise the sets of numbers with eventually periodic and finite expansions.

In this note we give an example of an ergodic non-singular map whose unitary operator admits a Lebesgue component of multiplicity one in its spectrum.
