In the Traité des systèmes, Condillac analyses a plurality of systematic metaphysical doctrines, specifically, those of Spinoza, Malebranche and Leibniz. Commentators have mainly interpreted this plurality as a way for Condillac to illustrate his criticisms and to raise doubts about the main contemporary systems while using the same criteria for interpretation. However, I note that his analytic tools differ according to which philosopher or philosophical system he analyses. This paper focuses on the criticism of Leibniz’s system, and aims to show that Condillac operated from subsequent reconstructions. In order to raise criticisms against the Leibnizian system, Condillac gave it an architectonic structure that is borrowed mainly from Wolff.

On sait le tollé qui entoura vers le dernier quart du XVIIIe siècle la publication du Système de la nature de d'Holbach (1770), le nombre de «réfutations» qui surgirent de toutes parts pour pourfendre le livre outrageant vite apparu comme la véritable bible du matérialisme moderne. Pourtant, parmi les critiques du Système celui qui se détache comme le champion incontestable, car le plus implacable du point de vue de la force théorique et tout aussi systématique ou virulent que son adversaire, n'est qu'un modeste abbé: l'abbé Bergier, remarquablement bien au fait des idées de la nouvelle philosophie et de ses progrès. Bergier conduit méthodiquement une réfutation des thèses ontologiques, morales et politiques de son adversaire en les sapant au niveau des principes d'abord et en dégageant ensuite leurs conséquences pernicieuses par rapport à l'ordre existant.

It is occasionally desirable to take an overview of quite a wide area of philosophy: what one loses in detail one gains in perspective. I follow this procedure in the present paper. Ia m concerned with the whole area where we indulge in practical deliberation, or where we attempt to justify some course of action we propose to follow or have followed. To do this I investigate the nature of a reason for acting and how such reasons can enter into an attempt to justify some act. It should be noticed that just having reasons for acting in some way does not entail that acting in that way is justifiable. In what follows, I speak first of reasons, later of justifications.

It is often said that philosophy in the seventeenth century returned from a Christian otherworldliness to a pagan engagement, theoretically and practically, with material nature. This process is often described as one of secularization, and the splitting off of science from natural philosophy and metaphysics is a traditional figure in accounts of the emergence of the modern. At the same time, the historiographical assumption that early modern science had religious and philosophical foundations has informed such classics as E. A. Burtt's Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science (1932), Gerd Buchdahl's Metaphysics and the Philosophy of Science (1969), and Amos Funkenstein's Theology and the Scientific Imagination (1986). A recent collection testifies to continuing interest in the theme of a positive relationship between theology and science.

This paper presents a metaphysical argument against physicalism based on the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic properties. It argues that the physical, as physicalism must understand it, consists entirely of extrinsic properties, whereas consciousness involves at least some intrinsic properties. It concludes that consciousness has non-physical properties and that physicalism is false. The paper then defends its premises against current physicalist thinking. As much as possible, it offers metaphysical arguments about physical and conscious properties rather than epistemological arguments about our physical and phenomenal concepts.

Most books defending the position now know as “libertarianism”, the thesis that government ought to confine itself only to the most minimal functions of preventing or punishing force and fraud, can be dismissed with little scruple as the work of cranks. And some have already done so with this one as well: but wrongly. It is clearly the work of a person of extraordinary brilliance, penetration, and learning, possessed of a pungent style and an uncommon flair for paradox and counterexample. Those who are inclined to reject it out of hand because its conclusions will seem incredible might also bear in mind that its author is a man to whom his colleague John Rawls (whose conclusions do seem very credible to many) has expressed gratitude and indebtedness. At any rate, I propose to take the work with complete seriousness. And after all, should there not be considerable attraction i n the view that the only enforceable duty is that of respecting the freedom of our fellows as completely as possible? Surely it behooves us to see just why this will not do, if it won't; and no better opportunity for examining the view has arisen than that provided by the publication of this book.

This article examines Confucius’ ideas of moral peace (an 安) and moral pleasure (le 樂) in the Analects. It argues that an and le are two correlated aspects of a self-cultivated state of being (jing-jie 境界) that is grounded on practising benevolence or human-heartedness (ren 仁) and on following the Way (dao 道). The state of an-le involves not only one's reason (i.e., knowing ren and dao) and one's will (i.e., willing ren and dao), but also one's love or ‘emotional liking’ (hào 好) with respect to the practice of ren and dao. It is a state that resembles Kant's idea of intellectual contentment but, pace Philip Ivanhoe's recent interpretation of Confucius, it is different from Aristotle's concepts of pleasure and eudaimonia.

Quel statut donner aux calculs et surtout aux figures proposées par Henri Bergson pour expliquer le fonctionnement de la reconnaissance dans Matière et mémoire ? Ce travail suggère que ces calculs et ces figures ne sont pas que des métaphores commodes ; la réalité n'est pas dépourvue d'un certain nombre d’éléments et de grandeurs plus ou moins importantes. Il semble donc possible de supposer qu'après avoir arithmétisé les faits de conscience à l'aide de nombres spéciaux (dans l’Essai), Bergson géométrise l’être spirituel et matériel (dans Matière et mémoire).

I argue that Aristotle takes a ‘natural language semantics’ approach to logic, which is consistent with the general attitudes one finds in informal logic today. Although his position is complex, Aristotle emphasizes the intensional rather than the extensional side of argument evaluation. He does not take a truth-functional approach to semantics, but an approach that elucidates the illative mechanism through an understanding of natures. This comes close to what informal logicians insist on. The informal logic movement was, to a very large extent, a Canadian initiative, prominently featuring authors such as Johnson, Blair, Govier, and many others.

John Rawls est souvent perçu comme un partisan de politiques redistributives visant à apaiser les conséquences d'une économie capitaliste qu'il ne remettrait pas en cause. Cet article montre qu'il s'agit là d'un préjugé et donne un aperçu de la transformation du paysage des entreprises qu'impliquerait une société juste aux yeux de Rawls. Nous commentons les régimes économiques qu'il esquisse dans son œuvre et rappelons que le libéralisme égalitaire a en vérité des implications profondes et souvent insoupçonnées en ce qui concerne la propriété et la gestion des entreprises. Pour Rawls, la démocratie de propriétaires implique que les citoyens possèdent tout au long de leur vie des parts sociales dans les entreprises tandis que le socialisme libéral suppose la nationalisation des moyens de production et la socialisation de leur gestion.

On sait qu'au debut de sa carriére, Occam a admis, comme une hypothése au moins probable, qu'en plus des choses réelles, toutes singuliéres, il y a de purs objets généraux d'intellection, dépourvus de tout être réel, qu'il appelle des «ficta». Les ficta étant posés, il leur identifiera à la fois les universaux et les concepts. Mais on sait aussi que c'est là une hypothése qu'aprés une période d'hésitation, il finira par abandonner. Ne pouvant désormais recourir aux ficta, il choisira d'identifier les concepts à des actes d'intellection et les universaux aux concepts généraux.

In this article, I study the extension which, according to Plato, the activity of aisthesis should receive. After a survey of the subject, I argue first that, if human aisthesis is antepredicative, it is nevertheless apparent in doxic judgement. Next, I study what distinguishing objects means for aisthesis, arguing that such a distinction involves the mysterious presence of those “common” somethings mentioned in the Theaetetus. I proceed to make the point that we are unable, in the light of the texts, to determine whether aisthesis can name its objects. Finally, I suggest translating “aesthetic experience” as “perceptual experience.”

La Cybernétique a trop de visages et trop peu d'âge en même temps pour qu'une pondération juste soit tentée des affirmations qu'elle suscite. Ses préventions pourtant n'en demeurent pas moins colorées des reflets d'un soleil que Descartes fit lever et dont il semble que le soir est sans fin. Car loin de penser que le dualisme cartésien ait été aboli par la science nouvelle, il m'apparait que c'est une nouvelle confirmation qu'il en reçoit. Si une machine assumait toutes les fonctions de l'homme, elle n'aurait annexé ni la pensée ni l'âme que Descartes a définies.

La thèse centrale de van Fraassen dans son dernier ouvrage est que son interprétation modale de la mécanique quantique (MQ) constitue une variante admissible de l'interprétation de Copenhague et que cette variante est résolument empiriste. Les moyens mis en œuvre pour défendre la thèse sont considérables – l'auteur fait appel à toutes les ressources de la littérature contemporaine sur la MQ et discute la plupart des auteurs pertinents – et le résultat est à la hauteur (considérable aussi) des promesses de l'ouvrage. Mais la thèse, abritée sous le couvert d'un œcuménisme herméneutique (p. viii), ne parvient pas à dégager du dogme empiriste une interprétation de la MQ suffisamment radicale pour lui assurer un statut indépendant. C'est sous le signe du rationalisme cartésien que van Fraassen a d'ailleurs voulu placer son entreprise, puisqu'il cite dans l'épigraphe de son ouvrage (aussi p. 335–336) le Descartes des Principes de la philosophie (IV, 204): «Que touchant les choses que les sens n'aperçoivent point, il suffit d'expliquer comment elles peuvent être […]». Et Descartes d'ajouter: «C'est tout ce qu'Aristote a fait».

I offer a counterexample to Timothy Williamson’s conjecture that knowledge is the most general factive mental state; i.e., that every factive mental state entails knowledge. I describe two counterexamples (Ernest Sosa’s and Baron Reed’s) that I find unpersuasive, and argue that they fail due to a specific feature they have in common. I then argue that there is a primitive mental state that is factive but does not entail knowledge, and that constitutes a counterexample to Williamson’s conjecture that is not subject to the problems faced by Sosa’s and Reed’s counterexamples.
