Many biological settings involve complex fluids that have non-Newtonian mechanical responses that arise from suspended microstructures. In contrast, Newtonian fluids are liquids or mixtures of a simple molecular structure that exhibit a linear relationship between the shear stress and the rate of deformation. In modeling complex fluids, the extra stress from the non-Newtonian contribution must be included in the governing equations.

In this study we compare Lagrangian mesh and Oldroyd-B formulations of fluid-structure interaction in an immersed boundary framework. The start-up phase of planar Poiseuille flow between two parallel plates is used as a test case for the fluid models. For Newtonian and Oldroyd-B fluids there exist analytical solutions which are used in the comparison of simulation and theoretical results. The Lagrangian mesh results are compared with Oldroyd-B using comparable parameters. A regridding algorithm is introduced for the Lagrangian mesh model. We show that the Lagrangian mesh model simulations with regridding produce results in close agreement with the Oldfoyd-B model.

This paper presents a GPU-accelerated implementation of the Locally Optimal Block Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (LOBPCG) method with an inexact nullspace filtering approach to find eigenvalues in electromagnetics analysis with higher-order FEM. The performance of the proposed approach is verified using the Kepler (Tesla K40c) graphics accelerator, and is compared to the performance of the implementation based on functions from the Intel MKL on the Intel Xeon (E5-2680 v3, 12 threads) central processing unit (CPU) executed in parallel mode. Compared to the CPU reference implementation based on the Intel MKL functions, the proposed GPU-based LOBPCG method with inexact nullspace filtering allowed us to achieve up to 2.9-fold acceleration.

This paper presents the simulation of complex separation flows over a modern fighter model at high angle of attack by using an unstructured/hybrid grid based Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) solver with an adaptive dissipation second-order hybrid scheme. Simulation results, including the complex vortex structures, as well as vortex breakdown phenomenon and the overall aerodynamic performance, are analyzed and compared with experimental data and unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) results, which indicates that with the DES solver, clearer vortical flow structures are captured and more accurate aerodynamic coefficients are obtained. The unsteady properties of DES flow field are investigated in detail by correlation coefficient analysis, power spectral density (PSD) analysis and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis, which indicates that the spiral motion of the primary vortex on the leeward side of the aircraft model is highly nonlinear and dominates the flow field. Through the comparisons of flow topology and pressure distributions with URANS results, the reason why higher and more accurate lift can be obtained by DES is discussed. Overall, these results show the potential capability of present DES solver in industrial applications.

Phase-field methods with a degenerate mobility have been widely used to simulate surface diffusion motion. However, apart from the motion induced by surface diffusion, adverse effects such as shrinkage, coarsening and false merging have been observed in the results obtained from the current phase-field methods, which largely affect the accuracy and numerical stability of these methods. In this paper, a flux-corrected phase-field method is proposed to improve the performance of phase-field methods for simulating surface diffusion. The three effects were numerically studied for the proposed method and compared with those observed in the two existing methods, the original phase-field method and the profile-corrected phase-field method. Results show that compared to the original phase-field method, the shrinkage effect in the profile-corrected phase-field method has been significantly reduced. However, coarsening and false merging effects still present and can be significant in some cases. The flux-corrected phase field performs the best in terms of eliminating the shrinkage and coarsening effects. The false merging effect still exists when the diffuse regions of different interfaces overlap with each other. But it has been much reduced as compared to that in the other two methods.

This paper presents comprehensive studies on two closely related problems of high speed collisionless gaseous jet from a circular exit and impinging on an inclined rectangular flat plate, where the plate surface can be diffuse or specular reflective. Gaskinetic theories are adopted to study the problems, and several crucial geometry-location and velocity-direction relations are used. The final complete results include flowfield properties such as density, velocity components, temperature and pressure, and impingement surface properties such as coefficients of pressure, shear stress and heat flux. Also included are the averaged coefficients for pressure, friction, heat flux, moment over the whole plate, and the averaged distance from the moment center to the plate center. The final results include complex but accurate integrations involving the geometry and specific speed ratios, inclination angle, and the temperature ratio. Several numerical simulations with the direct simulation Monte Carlo method validate these analytical results, and the results are essentially identical. Exponential, trigonometric, and error functions are embedded in the solutions. The results illustrate that the past simple cosine function approach is rather crude, and should be used cautiously. The gaskinetic method and processes are heuristic and can be used to investigate other external high Knudsen number impingement flow problems, including the flowfield and surface properties for high Knudsen number jet from an exit and flat plate of arbitrary shapes. The results are expected to find many engineering applications.

Vortex and vorticity are two correlated but fundamentally different concepts which have been the central issues in fluid mechanics research. Vorticity has rigorous mathematical definition (curl of velocity), but no clear physical meaning. Vortex has clear physical meaning (rotation) but no rigorous mathematical definition. For a long time, many people treat them as a same thing. However, based on our high-order direct numerical simulation (DNS), we found that first, “vortex” is not “vorticity tube” or “vortex tube” which is widely defined as a bundle of vorticity lines without any vorticity line leak. Actually, vortex is an open area for vorticity line penetration. Second, vortex is not necessarily congregation of vorticity lines, but dispersion in many 3-dimensional cases. Some textbooks say that vortex cannot end inside the flow field but must end on the solid wall (and/or boundaries). Our DNS observation and many other numerical results show almost all vortices are ended inside the flow field. Finally, a more theoretical study shows that neither vortex nor vorticity line can attach to the solid wall and they must be detached from the wall.

We analyze the geometrically consistent schemes proposed by E. Lu and Yang [6] for one-dimensional problem with finite range interaction. The existence of the reconstruction coefficients is proved, and optimal error estimate is derived under sharp stability condition. Numerical experiments are performed to confirm the theoretical results.

This paper is devoted to an extension of the finite-energy condition for extended Runge-Kutta-Nyström (ERKN) integrators and applications to nonlinear wave equations. We begin with an error analysis for the integrators for multi-frequency highly oscillatory systems , where M is positive semi-definite, . The highly oscillatory system is due to the semi-discretisation of conservative, or dissipative, nonlinear wave equations. The structure of such a matrix M and initial conditions are based on particular spatial discretisations. Similarly to the error analysis for Gaustchi-type methods of order two, where a finite-energy condition bounding amplitudes of high oscillations is satisfied by the solution, a finite-energy condition for the semi-discretisation of nonlinear wave equations is introduced and analysed. These ensure that the error bound of ERKN methods is independent of . Since stepsizes are not restricted by frequencies of M, large stepsizes can be employed by our ERKN integrators of arbitrary high order. Numerical experiments provided in this paper have demonstrated that our results are truly promising, and consistent with our analysis and prediction.

The present paper follows our previous work [Yang et al., Phys. Rev. E, 90 (2014), 063011] in which the bending modes of a symmetric flexible fiber in viscous flows were studied by using a coupling approach of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and element bending group (EBG). It was shown that a symmetric flexible fiber can undergo four different bending modes including stable U-shape, slight swing, violent flapping and stable closure modes. For an asymmetric flexible fiber, the bending modes can be different. This paper numerically studies the fiber shape, flow field and fluid drag of an asymmetric flexible fiber immersed in a viscous fluid flow by using the SPH-EBG coupling method. An asymmetric number is defined to describe the asymmetry of a flexible fiber. The effects of the asymmetric number on the fiber shape, flow field and fluid drag are investigated.

We study the error analysis of the weak Galerkin finite element method in [24, 38] (WG-FEM) for the Helmholtz problem with large wave number in two and three dimensions. Using a modified duality argument proposed by Zhu and Wu, we obtain the pre-asymptotic error estimates of the WG-FEM. In particular, the error estimates with explicit dependence on the wave number k are derived. This shows that the pollution error in the broken H1-norm is bounded by under mesh condition k7/2h2≤C0 or (kh)2+k(kh)p+1≤C0, which coincides with the phase error of the finite element method obtained by existent dispersion analyses. Here h is the mesh size, p is the order of the approximation space and C0 is a constant independent of k and h. Furthermore, numerical tests are provided to verify the theoretical findings and to illustrate the great capability of the WG-FEM in reducing the pollution effect.

We describe a numerical model to simulate the non-linear elasto-plastic dynamics of compressible materials. The model is fully Eulerian and it is discretized on a fixed Cartesian mesh. The hyperelastic constitutive law considered is neohookean and the plasticity model is based on a multiplicative decomposition of the inverse deformation tensor. The model is thermodynamically consistent and it is shown to be stable in the sense that the norm of the deviatoric stress tensor beyond yield is non increasing. The multimaterial integration scheme is based on a simple numerical flux function that keeps the interfaces sharp. Numerical illustrations in one to three space dimensions of high-speed multimaterial impacts in air are presented.

The computation of the radiative transfer equation is expensive mainly due to two stiff terms: the transport term and the collision operator. The stiffness in the former comes from the fact that particles (such as photons) travel at the speed of light, while that in the latter is due to the strong scattering in the optically thick region. We study the fully implicit scheme for this equation to account for the stiffness. The main challenge in the implicit treatment is the coupling between the spacial and angular coordinates that requires the large size of the to-be-inverted matrix, which is also ill-conditioned and not necessarily symmetric. Our main idea is to utilize the spectral structure of the ill-conditioned matrix to construct a pre-conditioner, which, along with an exquisite split of the spatial and angular dependence, significantly improve the condition number and allows a matrix-free treatment. We also design a fast solver to compute this pre-conditioner explicitly in advance. Our method is shown to be efficient in both diffusive and free streaming limit, and the computational cost is comparable to the state-of-the-art method. Various examples including anisotropic scattering and two-dimensional problems are provided to validate the effectiveness of our method.

This study makes the first attempt to accelerate the singular boundary method (SBM) by the precorrected-FFT (PFFT) for large-scale three-dimensional potential problems. The SBM with the GMRES solver requires computational complexity, where N is the number of the unknowns. To speed up the SBM, the PFFT is employed to accelerate the SBM matrix-vector multiplication at each iteration step of the GMRES. Consequently, the computational complexity can be reduced to . Several numerical examples are presented to validate the developed PFFT accelerated SBM (PFFT-SBM) scheme, and the results are compared with those of the SBM without the PFFT and the analytical solutions. It is clearly found that the present PFFT-SBM is very efficient and suitable for 3D large-scale potential problems.

We propose a fully conservative and less oscillatory multi-moment scheme for the approximation of hyperbolic conservation laws. The proposed scheme (CIP-CSL3ENO) is based on two CIP-CSL3 schemes and the essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) scheme. In this paper, we also propose an ENO indicator for the multimoment framework, which intentionally selects non-smooth stencil but can efficiently minimize numerical oscillations. The proposed scheme is validated through various benchmark problems and a comparison with an experiment of two droplets collision/separation. The CIP-CSL3ENO scheme shows approximately fourth-order accuracy for smooth solution, and captures discontinuities and smooth solutions simultaneously without numerical oscillations for solutions which include discontinuities. The numerical results of two droplets collision/separation (3D free surface flow simulation) show that the CIP-CSL3ENO scheme can be applied to various types of fluid problems not only compressible flow problems but also incompressible and 3D free surface flow problems.

The fractional derivatives include nonlocal information and thus their calculation requires huge storage and computational cost for long time simulations. We present an efficient and high-order accurate numerical formula to speed up the evaluation of the Caputo fractional derivative based on the L2-1σ formula proposed in [A. Alikhanov, J. Comput. Phys., 280 (2015), pp. 424-438], and employing the sum-of-exponentials approximation to the kernel function appeared in the Caputo fractional derivative. Both theoretically and numerically, we prove that while applied to solving time fractional diffusion equations, our scheme not only has unconditional stability and high accuracy but also reduces the storage and computational cost.

In this study, a numerical framework of the high order well-balanced weighted compact nonlinear (WCN) schemes is proposed for the shallow water equations based on the work in [S. Zhang, S. Jiang, C.-W Shu, J. Comput. Phys. 227 (2008) 7294-7321]. We employ a special splitting technique for the source term proposed in [Y. Xing, C.-W Shu, J. Comput. Phys. 208 (2005) 206-227] to maintain the exact C-property, which can be proved theoretically. In the meantime, the genuine high order accuracy of the numerical scheme can be observed successfully, and small perturbation of the stationary state can be resolved and evolved well. In order to capture the strong discontinuities and large gradients, the fifth-order upwind weighted nonlinear interpolations together with the fourth/sixth order cell-centered compact scheme are used to construct different WCN schemes. In addition, the local characteristic projections are considered to further restrain the potential numerical oscillations. A variety of representative one- and two-dimensional examples are tested to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed schemes.

The Shan-Chen multiphase lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) coupled with Carnahan-Starling real-gas equation of state (C-S EOS)was proposed to simulate three-dimensional (3D) cavitation bubbles. Firstly, phase separation processes were predicted and the inter-phase large density ratio over 2×104 was captured successfully. The liquid-vapor density ratio at lower temperature is larger. Secondly, bubble surface tensions were computed and decreased with temperature increasing. Thirdly, the evolution of creation and condensation of cavitation bubbles were obtained. The effectiveness and reliability of present method were verified by energy barrier theory. The influences of temperature, pressure difference and critical bubble radius on cavitation bubbles were analyzed systematically. Only when the bubble radius is larger than the critical value will the cavitation occur, otherwise, cavitation bubbles will dissipate due to condensation. According to the analyses of radius change against time and the variation ratio of bubble radius, critical radius is larger under lower temperature and smaller pressure difference condition, thus bigger seed bubbles are needed to invoke cavitation. Under higher temperature and larger pressure difference, smaller seed bubbles can invoke cavitation and the expanding velocity of cavitation bubbles are faster. The cavitation bubble evolution including formation, developing and collapse was captured successfully under various pressure conditions.

In this paper, a new numerical scheme for the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equations under the Lorentz gauge is proposed. We first rewrite the original GL equations into a new mixed formulation, which consists of three parabolic equations for the order parameter ψ, the magnetic field σ=curlA, the electric potential θ=divA and a vector ordinary differential equation for the magnetic potential A, respectively. Then, an efficient fully linearized backward Euler finite element method (FEM) is proposed for the mixed GL system, where conventional Lagrange element method is used in spatial discretization. The new approach offers many advantages on both accuracy and efficiency over existing methods for the GL equations under the Lorentz gauge. Three physical variables ψ, σ and θ can be solved accurately and directly. More importantly, the new approach is well suitable for non-convex superconductors. We present a set of numerical examples to confirm these advantages.

The computation efficiency of high dimensional (3D and 4D) B-spline interpolation, constructed by classical tensor product method, is improved greatly by precomputing the B-spline function. This is due to the character of NLT code, i.e. only the linearised characteristics are needed so that the unperturbed orbit as well as values of the B-spline function at interpolation points can be precomputed at the beginning of the simulation. By integrating this fixed point interpolation algorithm into NLT code, the high dimensional gyro-kinetic Vlasov equation can be solved directly without operator splitting method which is applied in conventional semi-Lagrangian codes. In the Rosenbluth-Hinton test, NLT runs a few times faster for Vlasov solver part and converges at about one order larger time step than conventional splitting code.

This paper proposes a novel distance derivative weighted ENO (DDWENO) limiter based on fixed reconstruction stencil and applies it to the second- and highorder finite volume method on unstructured grids. We choose the standard deviation coefficients of the flow variables as the smooth indicators by using the k-exact reconstruction method, and obtain the limited derivatives of the flow variables by weighting all derivatives of each cell according to smoothness. Furthermore, an additional weighting coefficient related to distance is introduced to emphasize the contribution of the central cell in smooth regions. The developed limiter, combining the advantages of the slope limiters and WENO-type limiters, can achieve the similar effect of WENO schemes in the fixed stencil with high computational efficiency. The numerical cases demonstrate that the DDWENO limiter can preserve the numerical accuracy in smooth regions, and capture the shock waves clearly and steeply as well.
