1-4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane dihydrochloride (DABCO·2HC1) was reacted with two vermic-ulite samples to produce intercalates which, at room temperature, had relatively sharp, single crystal X-ray diffraction patterns. At higher temperatures (250°C) the stacking order decreased, and consequently the 0kl reflections with k ≠ 3n became increasingly diffuse. The stacking order of previously heated samples returned when they were cooled. A superstructure was present in which DABCO cations occupied the corners and center of a cell 3a × b, compared with the standard vermiculite cell.

DABCO-intercalated Nyasaland vermiculite had the following monoclinic subcell (symmetry C1) parameters under ambient conditions: a = 5.341(2), b = 9.249(3), c = 14.50(1) Å, and ß = 96.98(5)°. Differential Fourier analyses and least-squares refinement led to a final R value of 12.6% for 1814 reflections. The crystal structure analysis showed that individual DABCO ions were not symmetrically positioned between the silicate layers. A network of inorganic cations and water molecules was also present and governed the interlayer separation. At 250°C the d value was 13.7 Å, consistent with a dehydrated structure, in which each organic pillar has one amino group keyed into a ditrigonal cavity and the other amino group riding on the basal oxygens of an opposite tetrahedron.

Alkaline solutions have significant effects on the mineral composition and on the microstructure of bentonite; in relevant geoenvironmental engineering applications, therefore, the properties of bentonite buffer materials must be taken into consideration in the presence of alkaline solutions. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of alkaline conditions on the swelling of bentonite mixed with sand. Bentonite-sand mixtures were soaked in a NaOH solution and allowed to react over prescribed periods of 6, 12, and 24 months. Swelling deformation tests were conducted on the alkali-treated bentonite-sand mixtures; the swelling of the mixtures decreased significantly with increased reaction time. The fractal ec-σ relationship (ec is void ratio of bentonite, σ is vertical stress) was employed to express the swelling characteristics of the alkali-treated mixtures, wherein the swelling coefficient decreased as the bentonite content was reduced. Dissolution traces over the clay surfaces degraded the microstructural phase, thereby slightly increasing the fractal dimension. At higher dosages of bentonite, the swelling of bentonite-sand mixtures always followed a similar ec-σ relationship as that found for bentonite alone. On the contrary, in the mixtures with a small bentonite content that surpassed the designated threshold pressure, the void ratio of clay in the mixtures deviated from the ec-σ curve due to the appearance of the sand skeleton. The bentonite content for a particular bentonite-sand mixture at which deviation from the ec-σ curve began was ~50%. This deviation was almost negligible at 50% initial bentonite content in the bentonite-sand mixtures; after treatment with NaOH solution, however, a pronounced deviation in the ec-σ curve was observed which was caused mainly by the decrease in the bentonite percentage. Finally, the vertical pressure threshold was also estimated using the ec-σ relation for bentonite-sand mixtures with small bentonite contents over a range of various alkaline solution reaction times.

A kaolin clay occurring in Carboniferous mudstone near the Jiangshan-Shaoxing deep fault in Zhejiang Province, eastern China was characterized by XRD and IR. Although the dominant mineral appeared to be kaolinite, IR also suggested the possible occurrence of nacrite. This was confirmed by forming intercalation complexes with potassium acetate and with hydrazine hydrate, both water complexes having the same characteristic spacing at 8.35 Â. Different particle size fractions of the kaolin clay were studied and the results indicated that nacrite content increased with increasing particle size. This occurrence of nacrite is consistent with previous findings of the polytype in high temperature and pressure environments.

The controlled chemical oxidative polymerization of metanilic anion $(m{\text{-NH}}_2{\text{C}}_6{\text{H}}_4{\text{SO}}_3^{-})$$(m{\rm{ - N}}{{\rm{H}}_2}{{\rm{C}}_6}{{\rm{H}}_4}{\rm{SO}}_3^ - )$ within the interlayer of NiAl layered double hydroxide was performed using, for the first time, ammonium persulfate as the oxidizing agent. The quantity of oxidizing agent required for control of the interlayer polymerization was investigated systematically and it was found that interleaved polyaniline sulfonic (PANIS) was present in different oxidation states and protonation levels when different quantities of external oxidizing agents were added. A mechanism for the oxidative polymerization of metanilic anion in NiAl layered double hydroxide is proposed, based on the intercalation of the oxidizing agent and the interlayer polymerization of monomer. The resulting PANIS/NiAl LDH composites were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Most previous studies of the kaolin deposits in the southeastern United States have focused on their mineralogy and petrology to understand better the depositional and diagenetic environments of the kaolins. Many studies suggest, however, that much of the information held within the minerals was changed during extensive post-depositional groundwater and microbial alteration. Organic δ13C and biomarker analyses were used, therefore, to provide further information on the nature of the original sediments, the depositional environment(s), and the amount of diagenetic alteration that has occurred in Georgia kaolin deposits.

Two different types of kaolin can be discerned, based on their total organic carbon contents: organic-lean kaolin and lignitic kaolin. The bulk organic δ13C in the Georgia kaolins ranges from ~−26 to −19% (VPDB, Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite standard), with a noticeable enrichment in 13C with decrease in organic carbon concentration. The lean kaolins are by far the more dominant types, with an organic-matter composition primarily of C16–C22n-alkanes, C16 and C18 fatty acids, and unresolved complex mixtures. Lignitic kaolin has a distinctly different organic matter (OM) composition. The lignitic material is primarily C15–C33n-alkanes with a greater abundance of C23–C31n-alkanes and lesser amounts of resinous and microbial constituents along with the oxidized forms of the saturated lipid fractions.

Biomarker data suggest that the lignitic material is primarily terrestrially derived from conifers with minor input from microbial lipids. The OM in both types of kaolin shows strong signs of microbial decomposition that yield the organically lean kaolins. The oxidation of the detrital organic matter would subsequently yield organic acids that would have exerted significant influence on the mineralogy and metal mobility.

Conductometric titrations of clay suspensions with surfactant solutions offer a rapid method of surface area determination of clay particles suspended in aqueous media. A cationic surfactant, dodecylamine hydrochloride, was used in this investigation. This surfactant was adsorbed by electrostatic bonding at cation exchange sites and by van der Waals forces. A monomolecular or bimolecular layer of the surfactant coats the particle and the completion of the layer is determined from a change in slope of the conductometric titration curve due to the formation of micelles. Good agreement between this method and BET determined values were obtained for kaolinite. The bentonite suspensions had a strong tendency to flocculate after the initial stage of adsorption causing the results to vary considerably. This method of surface area measurement of clay particles offers many advantages over the present techniques: (1) a dry particle is not required; (2) the equipment is inexpensive and available in many laboratories; (3) the method is rapid; (4) vacuum and high temperature are not required, and (5) the method measures the internal as well as external surface area.

A low-charge corrensite, i.e., a regular 1:1 interstratified smectite/chlorite was found in veins and fissures of an extensively fractured dolomite south of Perth, Ontario, Canada. Total chemical analysis indicated that the mineral was trioctahedral, having a structural formula corresponding to:

The coefficient of variation (CV) of the d(00l) spacings calculated for the mineral from X-ray powder diffraction data was 0.42, well below the maximum recommended value for corrensite, 0.75. The corrensite coexists with phlogopite, which is present as small (~0.5 mm) crystals throughout the rock and locally as large (~5 cm) crystals in pegmatitic veins. Microscopic observatiofls of large phlogopite crystals partially altered to corrensite suggest that corrensite formed at the expense of phlogopite by hydrothermal alteration.

Submicroscopic intergrowths of K biotite, Na biotite and intermediate Na-K biotite from a schist near Málaga (Betic Cordilleras, Spain) were discovered using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and analytical electron microscopy. The sample was also studied with X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the Na-enriched biotite is concentrated in albite-rich microdomains, albite being partially replaced by biotite. These images also revealed that both K and Na-K biotite grains appear locally retrograded to kaolinite. Transmission electron microscopic data indicated that K biotite, Na biotite and Na-K biotite form parallel or subparallel packets with interfaces parallel to the basal planes of biotite. Potassium biotite forms thick packets, chemically homogeneous, with a basal spacing of 10.1 Å. Sodium biotite also occurs as chemically homogeneous stacks of layers with a 9.78 Å periodicity. Sodium-K biotite shows, on the contrary, variable composition and basal spacings intermediate between K and Na biotites. Analytical electron microscopic data revealed important chemical differences between Na and K biotites, which affect both the tetrahedral and the octahedral sheets. Both electron microprobe analysis and analytical electron microscopy indicated that the trioctahedral micas show relatively low interlayer occupancy, suggesting the presence of H3O+ replacing the interlayer cations. Partial hydration of biotite explains the presence of a weak 14 Å reflection in the X-ray patterns. Both chemical and textural data suggested that these trioctahedral micas grew during a common prograde metamorphic episode, the phases with intermediate composition probably being metastable.

Zearalenone (ZEA), a common contaminant in food and feedstuffs, threatens human and animal health. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of modified palygorskite (MPal), a ZEA-targeted adsorbent, on broilers (young chickens) fed a ZEA-contaminated diet. Broilers were subjected to one of three treatments for a period of 42 days: a basal diet (control group), a ZEA- contaminated diet, and a ZEA-contaminated diet supplemented with 1 g/kg of MPal. Blood was collected for serum metabolite assay, and liver and kidney were sampled to determine ZEA residue and antioxidant-related parameters, using commercial spectrophotometric kits. Compared with the basal diet, the ZEA- contaminated diet resulted in compromised growth performance (reduced daily gain and feed intake during finisher period), disordered relative liver weight (decreased at 21 days but increased at 42 days), increased ZEA residue in liver and kidney, abnormal serum metabolites (decreased total protein content but increased alanine aminotransferase activity at 21 and 42 days, reduced albumin content at 21 days, and elevated aspartate aminotransferase activity at 42 days), and disrupted antioxidant capacities of broilers (increased total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity in liver at 21 and 42 days, decreased T-SOD activity in kidney at 21 and 42 days, and in serum at 42 days, greater malondialdehyde accumulation in liver and kidney at 42 days, and lower glutathione content in kidney at 21 days). The adverse consequences resulting from the ZEA-contaminated diet were relieved by the supplementation of MPal (except albumin concentration in serum and T-SOD activity in liver at 21 days), with the values of growth-performance parameters, liver weight, renal ZEA accumulation, total protein content, transaminase activity at 42 days, and antioxidant indexes being similar to those in the control group. These results suggested that MPal supplementation could promote growth performance, attenuate liver damage, and improve the antioxidant abilities of broilers fed ZEA-contaminated diet by reducing ZEA accumulation.

Bentonite-bonded molding sand is one of the most common mold materials used in metal casting. The high casting temperatures cause dehydration and alteration of the molding sand, thereby degrading its reusability. Neutron radiography and neutron diffraction were applied to study these processes by using pure bentonite-quartz-water mixtures in simulation casting experiments. The aim of the experiments was to compare the dehydration behavior of raw and recycled mold material in order to assess possible causes of the limited reusability of molding sands in industrial application. Neutron radiography provided quantitative data for the local water concentrations within the mold material as a function of time and temperature. Dehydration zones, condensation zones, and areas of pristine hydrated molding sand could be established clearly. The kinematics of the zones was quantified. Within four cycles of de- and rehydration, no significant differences in water kinematics were detected. The data, therefore, suggest that the industrial handling (molding-sand additives and the presence of metal melt) may have greater effects on molding-sand reusability than the intrinsic properties of the pure bentonite–quartz–water system.

Clays are abundant materials in the Amazon region and have been used historically by ancient Amazonian people to produce ceramic and cosmetics products. The current study aimed to evaluate the potential of four clays from the metropolitan area of Manaus, each with a different color, for cosmetics applications. Two clays were collected in the Ponta Negra region (red and gray in color) in Manaus, one in Careiro (white), and one in Itacoatiara (black). After drying in an oven for 24 h at 105°C, the four clays were characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle-size analysis, and detection of microorganisms. The amounts of Al, Si, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Zn, P, and S in all samples were below the limits for use in cosmetics. The main phases identified were kaolinite 1A, quartz, gibbsite, and the rare kaolinite 2M. Approximately 40 wt.% of each sample was in the < 20 μm particle-size range. Analyses by SEM revealed pseudo-hexagonal kaolinite structures with nano-islands and nanocrystallites. The low toxicity, mineralogic compositions, and particle-size findings suggest that Amazonian clays are promising for cosmetics applications.

Dioctahedral tosudite, a regular interstratification of dioctahedral chlorite-dioctahedral smectite, occurs associated with kaolin in the hydrothermal area of Delgado, Neutla, Mexico. Its composition corresponds to the formula:
