Ahnea keejeongi Park and Carlton (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae), a new genus and new species of New Zealand endemic beetle belonging to the supertribe Faronitae is described. Six previously described species are included to this genus and four species are synonymised as follow: Sagola dissonans Broun, 1921 and S. planicula Broun, 1921 under Ahnea ventralis (Broun, 1912); S. carinata Broun, 1912 and S. lineiceps Broun, 1921 under Ahnea lineata (Broun, 1893). A key to species, habitus photographs, line drawings of diagnostic characters, and distribution maps are provided.

Larvae of the Australian fossorial carabid Carenum anthracinum Macleay are described from reared material and compared with the reared larva of C. elegans Macleay and eight different unassociated larval types belonging to the complex. These larvae exhibit an extraordinary range of character states indicating clearly that their placement in the tribe Scaritini cannot be retained. An examination of adult characters and, in particular, the fore tibial dentition confirms that Carenum and allied genera form a separate tribe, the Carenini, which appears to be a sister group of the remaining Scaritini (including Clivinina).

Recently I had the opportunity of watching in a live box, under a low power of the microscope, the seizing and devouring of some plant-lice by the larva of an undetermined species of Chrysopa, and was interested in the manner in which it emptied the body of its victims. The jaws are large, hooked, pointed and tubular, with a small opening at or near the points. Approaching its prey the body of the Aphis is grasped by the hooked mandibles which at the same time pierce it. The Chrysopa larva remains stationary, and proceeds to pump its victim dry. At the base of each of the mandibles the integuments are dilated into a sac-like form capable of expansion and compression at will, a portion of the thorax is similarly constructed, and it is by the repeated dilating and compressing of these sacs that the fluid contents of teh body of the Aphis are transferred through the tubular mandibles to the stomach of the Chrysopa larva.

On the night of June 4, 1933, we “tied out” seven females of Tropaea luna and by 11 p. m. four of them had found mates.

On June 10 at 1.30 p. m., a male and a female Actias selene emerged from cocoons which we had purchased in New York. The following day two males emerged. Copulation occurred with one of these at 11.55 p. m. The mates separated at 2.30 the next morning and the female began ovipositing at once.

In the preceding volume of the Entomologist (vol. xvi., p. 186) an account is given of some of the Coleoptera found in September on Brigantine Beach, N. J.; and having been there this season from the 1st till the 18th of the same month, I propose to give a further account of some of the insects inhabiting that region.

Cicindela dorsalis Say is found in great abundance on the shore between the lines of high and low tide, keeping as close to the water as it can get. If too closely pursued it frequently takes wing, alighting in the surf and coming to the shore in the foam, from which it usually escapes before it can be taken. It is sluggish in its movements, running about a yard, then stopping, and so on alternately, and flying only when pursued, and then for but short distances. More than two-thirds of the females captured want either a part of an antenna or of a hind leg, these mutilations occurring on the right side in a large majority.

Characters of head profile and abdominal apodemes are used to supplement the variable character of crown shape in determining the nearctic species of Xerophloea. These characters are illustrated for X. peltata (Uhl.), X. minor Laws., X. robusta Laws., X. major Bak., and X. majesta Laws., and a key for species recognition is included. On the basis of these characters, only X. peltata is found in Canada.

The following species were collected, from 29th March to 21st June, 1884, along the thirtieth parallel in two neighborhoods, New Orleans and environs, and a district on Bayou la Fourche extending from a little above Napoleonville a few miles south along the bayou. The latter is in Assumption Parish, and at the time of my visit was partially overflowed from the great crevasse of March, 1884. Though many of the species here given are well known to occur in the South Louisiana fauna, I give them all just as I collected them, with the view of noting their relative abundance or rarity, dates of occurrence, localities, etc., all of which together may contribute to make our knowledge of the fauna more complete. But it must be remembered that this is merely a record of how the species occurred to me during my stay, in which I collected only a small part of what might have been taken, could I have given my entire attention thereto. Nearly all those of the N. O. neighborhood were taken between the city and Lake Pontchartrain.

Significant variation in the morphology of late-instar nymphs of Stenonema tripunctatum (Banks) in Lake Huron could not be ascribed to their proximity to warm-water plumes originating from the Bruce Nuclear Power Development, by either multivariate or univariate analyses of size and shape. Major sources of variation in S. tripunctatum were developmental state and sex. Nymphs collected just prior to emergence had low values of transverse measurements in anterior regions (inter-orbital width, prothoracic width), whereas males and females were separated by these measurements and other components of head geometry.

No significant effects of thermal exposure were found in the reproductive development of S. tripunctatum, but this species is most commonly found below depths at which thermal-plume effects are expected. Based on a small but representative sample, ultimate-instar nymphs of Stenonema vicarium (Walker) from a depth of 3 m contained significantly fewer eggs and allocated a significantly lower proportion of biomass (dry weight) to reproduction in locations with higher temperatures.

To this subfamily belong the giants of the family, although many species in it are of moderate or insignificant size. Here belong the “Tarantula Killers,” or Pompilids, belonging to the genus Pepsis, large, brilliantly coloured species, often with fiery red wings, or blue or black wings marked with white or red, etc., that prey upon the genuine Tarantulas and other large species of spiders.

Two new species of aphids are described from Manitoba, Acyrthosiphon assiniboinensis new species from Potentilla fruticosa L., and Masonaphis pinawae new species from Ledum groenlandicum Oeder.
