This species, which in all the later lists has been placed in the genus Euxoa, will have to be transferred to Agrotis on the strength of the male genitalia which are typical of this latter genus; the front, furthermore, is only slightly bulging and roughened and does not show the tubercle with raised edges characteristic of most of the Euxoa species.

A number of our species of North American Coleophoridae are characterized by their unicolorous dark gray-brown forewings and lack of a prominent basal tuft on the antennae, making an identification of the individual species a rather difficult matter unless recourse be had to genitalic characters which in both sexes offer excellent means of separation.

I have usually taken this species at the same place, about one or two specimens a year, and always within ten yards of the place where I first took it six years ago. The trees in the immediate vicinity were Gleditschia triacanthos, Ulmus americana, Prunus serotina and Celtis occidentalis, but it may have fed as larva upon some weeds or shrubs growing near. All of my specimens were taken about the 8th or 10th of July. This year, however, I have captured (June 14th) two specimens (perfectly fresh) on Gleditschia triacanthos at another place, where the nearest tree was Celtis occidentalis, growing some thirty yards away. Its larva and food plant, however, are not yet by any means certainly ascertained.

Female. Length about 8 mm., anterior wing about 5.5 mm. The following parts are ferruginous: labrum, mandibles, lower margin of clypeus, scape, flagellum beneath (above it is dusky reddish), tubercles, scutellum, axillae, area of metathorax (except apical part), upper part of sides of metathorax, region below wings, a very broad band across pleura, legs, first two abdominal tergites and base of third, apex of abdomen and all of abdominal venter.

The seasonal history of an insect has an important relationship to the success or failure of any efforts to usr parasites in its control. In the work on parasites of thr European corn borer, Pyrausta nubilalis Hubn., over a period of years, the writer has had an opportunity to observe the changes which have taken place in the seasonal history of this insect in Western Ontario. It was shown by the writer (Wislwt, 1942, 1944) that there was a gradual and rather consistent increase in the proportion of the population which had two generations instead of one. The present paper presents further data pertinent to this subject.

Megapamera n. gen. of the tribe Myodochini, and ashlocki n. sp. from Solomon Islands, and tenua n. sp. from New Guinea are described.

Black, the antenn♀, palpi, labella and front corners of the first two abdominal segments pale yellow, the last segment and hind edge of the preceding orange yellow. Front at narrowest part one-fifth as wide as either eye, the upper three pairs of frontal bristles much larger than the others, one pair beneath insertion of antenn♀, facial ridges strongly diverging below antenn♀ slender, almost as long as the face, the third joint five times as long as the second.

Two new species of the genus Stenus Latr. (subgenus Hypostenus) are described: one from Quebec, the other one from Newfoundland.

About ten years ago (see Can. Ent., Vol. XXXVII, Nos. 7 and 8) I published a list of beetles taken by me on the Queen Charlotte Islands. The beetles enumerated below were, except where otherwise designated, taken on the mainland of British Columbia, on the coast between the mouths of the Naas and Skeena Rivers. Some of them were determined for me through the kindness of Dr. James Fletcher, the Dominion Entomologist, whose valuable help and advice I have now for many years enjoyed; the remaider by Professor H.F. Wickham, of Iowa University, to whose skill and courtesy I am deeply indebted.

Aphids of the species described below were first seen by the author at Cowichan Lake, Vancouver Island, in 1956. Additional observations and collections were made in 1959 at several other locations in southern British Columbia.

The species is unique in that it is apparently the only one in the genus living on western hemlock, Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.

All measurements of the body and appendages are in millimetres.

Primaries–The costa attains the margin before the middle ; the subcostal, which is faint towards the base, sends a branch to the margin from before the middle, two others near the end of the cell, another beyond the cell and becomes furcate before the tip, one of the branches going to each margin. Cell closed by a very short oblique discal vein without branches. The median sends two branches to the margin before the end of the cell, and becomes furcate behind it. Submedian furcate at base. Wing lanceolate, with moderately long ciliæ.

Danausplexippus L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) is a cosmopolitan species, distributed in America wherever milkweed grows (Amett 1985). Its migratory phenomenon spans Canada, the United States, and Mexico and it has been considered endangered since the 1980s (IUCN 1983).

Ackery and Van-Wright (1984) compiled 45 species of food plants used by immature stages and 70 species of plants attractive to adults of the Monarch butterfly. Malcolm and Brower (1986) listed 28 host plant species recorded in nature. Lynch and Martin (1993) added six Asclepias species and observed larvae on three species of milkweed vine, Sarcostemma crispum and S. cynancroides in Texas, and Cynanchum laeve in Louisiana.

It is distinctiy within my knowledge that many persons who are not overburdened with too large a share of wordly wealth, are strongly inclined to make the study of Entomology and the collecting of insect specimens an employment for their leisure hours, were it not for fear of the expense they believe it necessary to incur for cabinet, cork, pins, &c. Now, the cabinet and cork may be dispensed with-in fact, I have neither the one nor the other myself.

Rhadiurgus variabilis (Zetterstedt 1838), a robber fly described from Europe, and Nigrasilus nitidifacies Hine 1908, described from North America, are newly synonymized. Lectotypes are designated for Asilus variabilis Zetterstedt and N. nitidifacies Hine. Some new descriptive material, including measurements and colour data, is given for five geographical regions: Europe, Eastern Siberia, Alaska/Yukon, Western Cordillera, and Boreal North America. Illustrations of male and female genitalia are presented. The species’ range is clarified and ecological data are summarized. Rhadiurgus variabilis inhabits northern and mountain forests from Scotland eastward to Labrador; it is one of the world’s most northerly ranging robber flies. Variation in the species includes an increasing proportion of dark body setae in individuals from Eurasia eastward through North America.

Samples of the bodies and elytra of Entomoscelis americana Brown were analyzed separately by X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Discriminant analysis revealed that the chemoprints of the bodies of newly-emerged beetles (1 wk old) were distinct from those of post-aestivation beetles (9- to 10-wk old). However, the chemoprints of the elytra of newly-emerged and post-aestivation beetles were not as different as those of the bodies as demonstrated by the overlap in the plot of the first two canonical variables. The variances of the mean difference of individual variables between newly-emerged and post-aestivation groups generally were smaller for elytra than for bodies. This suggests that the chemoprints of the elytra of E. americana are more stable than those of the bodies and consequently the elytra should be more suitable than the bodies in insect dispersal studies utilizing the X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy technique.

Within the last few years parasites have become of increasing importance in the control of the oriental fruit moth, Grapholitha molesta Busck. Dr. Van Steenburgh, in a paper to be published in the Report of the Entomological Society of in Ontario for 1934, has reviewed their importance in Ontario and has shown that Glypta rufiscutellaris Cress. is the predominant native species, ranking next to the introduced Macrocentrus ancylivorus Roh. Cremastus minor Cush. is of secondary importance, while the other species occur only in small numbers.
