Length 4.5-7 mm.: width 28-4 mm. Broadly oval; moderately convex; feebly shining; blackish, the dorsum with a bluish or greenish tint; body with erect brownish hairs. Head about one-half as wide as prothorax; genae moderately arcuate.

In the spring of 1957, Mr. K. J. Crawford, Gananoque, Ontario, took some interesting photographs of some mosquitoes that were feeding on a frog. With Mr. Crawford's kind permission, we reproduce one of these photographs (Fig. 1). This photograph was taken among the reeds of a swampy depression a few miles north of Marnlora, Ontario. As it was taken early in the season, April 26 to be exact, the mosquitoes had probably overwintered as adults. They attacked the frog fiercely, but did not bother the photographer. The mosquitoes can not be identified with certainty from the photograph, but they probably belong either to the genus Culex or the genus Culiseta. The evidence suggests that they are Culex territans Walker. This species probably overwinters in the adult stage in Ontario, is a known amphibian feeder, and is not believed to attack man (Carpenter and LaCasse, 1955).

Peltotrichius glaseri n. sp. is described from Baleu, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, and the generic limits of Peltotrichius are slightly altered.

Dr. Herbert F. Schwarz has recently considered the relationship of Anthidium collectum Huard and A. angelarum Titus. After a study of the facts at hand, he says: “I think tliere can be little doubt that the insects represent one species to which the name collectum applies by virtue of priority.” From a review of the literature there seems to be no record of the nesting habits of this bee.

Pupae of the onion maggot, Hylemya antiqua (Meigen), did not complete their development when irradiated with 3.0 kiloroentgens within five days of pupal formation. Older pupae were not adversely affected. Females from treated pupae were sterile and laid no eggs when caged with normal males. The males from treated pupae were sterilized to a high degree, yet normal females mated with them and laid normal complements of eggs. Less than 0.2% of 10,616 eggs laid by normal females caged with sterile males hatched. A 6:1 ratio of sterile to normal flies reduced egg hatch to 1.7%.

Cameraria macrocarpae Freeman is a univoltine blotch miner which feeds on the palisade parenchyma of bur oak leaves. The larvae have two morphologically distinct forms and seven instars. It overwinters in the sixth instar, inside the mined leaf. Females deposit their eggs in rows, usually beside the mid-rib, and the larvae enter the leaf directly under the chorion. The larvae from each egg cluster form a common mine on the upper surface of the leaf. The mines of C. macrocarpae are brownish and each contains several larvae, differing from the whitish mines of Cameraria hamadryadella (Clemens), each containing a single larva. Nine species of parasites are listed.

We investigated the use of wooden boards to sample ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and compared their efficacy with that of single pitfall traps and two modified pitfall traps (barrier and grouped traps). Carabid captures and species richness were similar between wooden boards and single pitfall traps, but higher in barrier and grouped traps. Although captures were higher in the modified pitfall traps, no method was consistently superior or capable of capturing all carabid species recorded at our study site. A distinct advantage of wooden boards is their ease of installation and maintenance and the fact that they can be left in remote areas for extended periods of time, eliminating the need to visit areas to open traps (if livetrapping is the desired outcome). These time savings and reduced site disturbance may make wooden boards an alternative to single pitfall traps.

Intraguild predation is a notable factor to proper application of biocontrol agents to reduce pest populations. Intraguild predation was studied between Typhlodromus bagdasarjani Wainstein and Arutunjan (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in presence and absence of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) as well as pollen. Intraguild predation between two predators was bidirectional. The highest and the lowest predation rates of both predators in absence and presence of T. urticae as well as in the pollen treatments were on heterospecific eggs and deutonymphs, respectively. Typhlodromus bagdasarjani consumed more heterospecific eggs compared with P. persimilis. When pollen was added, predation of T. bagdasarjani significantly reduced on heterospecific eggs and deutonymphs in absence and presence of T. urticae treatments, respectively. However, predation rate of P. persimilis on heterospecific stages was not significantly affected by pollen addition. Oviposition of both predators was higher in presence of T. urticae than in its absence and oviposition of P. persimilis was significantly higher on heterospecific stages than T. bagdasarjani. Pollen addition had a significant effect on increasing the oviposition rate of T. bagdasarjani. Extraguild prey presence had a nonsignificant effect on the consumption rate of intraguild prey by the intraguild predators. However, presence of extraguild prey led to a significant increase in oviposition rate of both predators.

Seasonal distributions of adult emergence and larval drop for Anoplonyx luteipes (Cresson), A. canadensis Harrington, and Pristiphora erichsonii (Hartig) are compared. Larval populations of A. luteipes have a significant positive correlation with those of P. erichsonii, while A. canadensis adult populations show a significant negative correlation with P. erichsonii larval populations.

A considerable number of insect species of potential economic importance new to Canada, some being new to North America, have been recorded in the Canadian Insect Pest Survey since new records were reviewed (McNay, 1955). These and others, mainly from 1954 records, are brought together in this paper. Two new mire species are included. Sources of information include Survey reports from officers of the Entomology and Plant Protection divisions, provincial entomologists, and other co-operators; The Canadian Entomologist; The Canadian Insect Pest Review; Proceedings of the Entomological Society of British Columbia; and the Bi-monthly Progress Report of the Forest Biology Division, Canada Department of Agriculture.

In order to clear up certain doubts which had arisen regarding the identity of several Heptagenine species, placed at present in the genus Ecdyonurus, and described by Clemens from material collected in the Go Home Bay region of the Georgian Bay (1913, Can. Ent. XLV, 246-262), Mr. G. S. Walley spent the months of June and July, 1932, in this same locality, collecting and breeding nymphal material. In the group in question he was most successful in securing both nymphs and bred adults of all the species listed by Clemens; the present article, therefore, is presented with a view not only of rendering definitely recognizable certain of Clemens' species in which the original diagnoses were rather brief and incomplete, but also of correcting some specific misidentifications occurring in Clemens' paper.

Investigations into the causal organism of late fall browning in Wisconsin disclosed an undescribed species of gall midge. The taxonomic description and a summary statement of the life history are presented.

Amber coloration, called saffroning, extends from 1 to 15 mm across the hind-wing base in females of Sympetrum internum Montgomery from the prairie provinces but extends only from 2 to 3 mm in males. There are no substantial differences in hind-wing length between the sexes. A significant correlation was found between hind-wing length and the extent of saffroning for both males and females. Regressions of these characters against latitude and longitude revealed that (1) there is a significant decrease in hind-wing length northward for both sexes; (2) there is a significant decrease in saffroning northward that is more significant for females; (3) there is no significant effect of longitude on hind-wing length; and (4) saffroning in females significantly increases westward but there is no similar effect in males, and the trend in females is much less significant than the latitudinal trend. Within the prairie provinces, extensive saffroning is confined to the Prairie Ecozone and moderate saffroning occurs around the edges of this ecozone. The surrounding Boreal Plains Ecozone is characterized by females with very limited saffroning. There is generally extensive variation in the extent of saffroning within some Prairie Ecozone locations, ranging from limited to moderate or extensive, but limited and moderate saffroning were more frequent at most locations in the Prairie Ecozone. Various explanations for saffroning are considered. Since limited, moderate, and extensive saffroning occur together throughout an extensive area, and occur within many populations and within a group emerging at the same time, formal taxonomic recognition of individuals with moderate or extensive saffroning seems unwarranted.

In the Ottawa region about the middle of June, frequently certain leaves of the common alder, Alnus rugosa var. americana (Regel) Fern., are drawn together by strands of silk, concealing an elongate silken tube or case. The latter is occupied by an active brownish-grey larva that, when unmolested, extends itself from the broadly open end of the rube to feed on the foliage. This insect is the phycitid Acrobasis rubrifasciella Pack., a species that occors in northeastern United States and adjacent parts of Canada.

Xorides caryœ, n. sp.

Female.—Length 11 to 16 mm. Black with yellowish-white markings. Head swollen, interior orbits, interrupted opposite antennæ punctured, between antennæ and ocelli polished; antennæ slender black. Thorax with the pectus and pleuræ finely punctate, polished; disc of mesothorax transversely rugulose; metathorax rounded, faintly sulcate medially and rugosely punctured and aciculated; sides of prothorax, two lines on mesothorax, two spots, sometimes confluent, on scutellum, the post-scutellum, the tegulæ and a broad stripe of pleura, contined on middle coxa, yellow-whitel legs, including coxæ, pale rufous or honey-yellow, anterior ones paler, the anterior coxæ stripe on middle coxæ outwardly, second joint of trochanters and the knees yellow, tibiæ and tarsi piceous or blackish, the former with a pale line within; wings hyaline, nervures and stigma black.

It has long been known that life events occur earlier at lower than at higher altitudes (Hopkins, 1918; Chapman, 1931; Uvarov, 1931). Treherne and Buckell (1924) refer specifically to the earlier appearance of the clear-winged grasshopper, Camnula pellucida (Scudder), near Nicola Lake, B.C., (2020 ft.), as compared with its appearance at nearby but higher places such as Douglas Lake (2600 ft.) and in the areas between Minnie Lake and Aspen Grove “where the elevation at many points exceeds 3500 feet.” These references, and the possibility of using the knowledge to help determine dates when control operations may be necessary on various ranges in any one season, suggested the need for more precise measurements of the development of this major rangeland pest at different altitudes in different years.
