The divergens group of the genus Euxoa Hbn. is defined, and a new species, Euxoa sinelinea, is described from Goose Bay, Newfoundland, and from Smoky Falls and Black Sturgeon Lake in north-central Ontario.

Notes on the biology and habits of 12 parasitic insects associated with Eucosma rescissoriana Heinrich in western white pine, Pinus monticola Douglas, cones in northern Idaho are presented. Descriptive notes on the immature stages of three important parasite species. Chelonus petrovae McComb (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Apanteles starki Mason (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and Psalidopteryx psilocorsiphaga Brooks (Diptera: Tachinidae) also are included. Correlations between the life stages of these three parasite species are made with phenological events in the host tree and associated plants at two of the four study plots.

Eggs laid April 25th, side by side, packed closely together on the twig at fork of leaf bud. The moth standing head downwards with half opened wings and “see-sawing” out a string of from three to twelve eggs. Between times it runs all over the twig as do the Tineids. Egg oblong, rounded at both ends, length .87 mm., width .46 mm. Slightly roughened and punctured like the skin of an orange. Colour at first a delicate pea-green turning yellowish. The number deposited at the base of each leaf varied considerably. Hatched Hay 3rd to 5th. At birth larva 1.6 mm., semi-transparent, light sap-green with evanescent purple shades. Body cylindrical, of same approximate size throughout, ending in a strongly bifurcate anal segment. Head light yellow-brown; 1st and 2nd epicranial and 1st clypeal setæ rudimentary, the remaining eleven primary setæ well-developed blunt bristles. Ocelli prominent, dark brown. Shield concolorous. True legs transparent, with dark claws; 4th prolegs fleshy, rimmed with brown; the others not showing.

Alar expanse 15 to 16 mm.

Head small, with long, rather bristly scales, of which it is easily denuded, the colours mingled dingy white and buff; labial palpi projecting, elongate triangular, densely scaled, of a buff colour, indistinctly margined with white; maxillary palpi not in evidence; tongue slender, naked, eyes globular, large, purplish brown; antennæ silvery white above, pale brown beneath, the joints distinct and clothed with very short pubescence. Thorax buff with white median line, patagia buff; bordered more or less distinctly with white. Abdomen clothed with buff or fulvous scales, with indistinct bands of white at base. Legs shading from pale brown femora to yellowish-white tarsi. Wings broad. Fore wings, ground dour of black, buff and white scales intermingled, ranging from dark to light in proportion to the number of white scales, which is variable; a narrow, rather indefinite, white streak extends longitudinally from the base of the wing near the inner margin to about the middle; a more distinct white area has its base on the costa in the apical third extending obliquely backward about half across the wing; a narrow white line curves around the outer margin, diverging quite widely from the latter near the apical and the outer angles, most distinct near the costa, where it very nearly touches the base of the costal fascia, to this succeeds a dark band and a second narrower white line followed by a fine black marginal line; fringes white, variegated with two dusky bands.

In a recent contribution in this Journal, I described a few new Diptera from Canada. The present paper contains descriptions of six new Canadian species and two from the United States, the types of the Canadian species being in the Canadian National Collection. The descriptions of two of the species of Ptiolina in this paper have been prepared by Dr. M. D. Leonard and are included in order that the key to species may be complete. From our study of this genus it seems probable that there are other species to be found, especially in the north where so little collecting has been done.

A molecular and biometric assessment and redescription of Myzodium mimulicola (Drews and Sampson) are provided. New North American host and distributional data are presented, including the first record from Alaska. Myzodium knowltoni (Smith and Robinson) is a junior subjective synonym of M. mimulicola, based on molecular-sequence and morphological evidence. A key to the known Myzodium species (apterae and alatae) is included.

In connection with a revision of Agrotid genera (in sens. strict.) which I have been working on for some time and which has involved a study of the male genitalia of all our North American species, I have come across a number of discrepancies in the placing of certain genera and species which it is the purpose of this short paper to correct.

♂ Head dark olive-brown, tinged with paler ochreous around the base of the antennae and behind the ocelli ; thorax deep black-brown, the pleural sutures marked with ochreous; abdomen dorsally light clay-color with deep brown semi-rectangular lateral patches, extending forward and downward from the posterior margin of each segment but not attaining the anterior margin except on segments one and two where they occupy nearly the entire segment; ventrally similar in color to dorsum with lateral longitudinal brown streaks or bands adjoining the suture; forceps and setae dull smoky.

The preceding part under this title was published in 1946 (Can. Ent., 77: 186-191). I am here discussing a number of species from the western United States, chiefly from Oregon and California, where they were collected by my friends, Messrs. T. H. G. Aitken, Mont A. Cazier, Kenneth M. Fender and Lawrence W. Saylor, to whom I am greatly indebted for the privilege of retaining the types in my collection. A few additional species were taken by myself in Arizona and Wyoming.

Descriptions and figures of five undescribed species are presented: Lachlania talea, L. iops, Epeorus (Iron) packeri, Rhithrogena notialis, and Heptagenia bella. Heptagenia mexicana Ulmer is tentatively transferred to the genus Stenonema, the nymphal stage is described for Isonychia sicca manca Eaton and Homoeoneuria salviniae Eaton, and new collection records extend the known distributional range of Dactylobaetis mexicanus Traver & Edmunds, D. musseri Traver & Edmunds, D. zenobia Traver & Edmunds, Isonychia sicca manca, Homoeoneuria salviniae, Epeorus (Iron) metlacensis Traver, and Stenonema mexicana.

Culex atropalpus, new species.

♀. Black the halteres, apices of coxæ, and bases and under side of femora, except toward the apex, yellowish white; scales of palpi black, occiput covered with board, appressed whitish scales and with a patch of black ones near the middle of each side, the middle of the upper side covered with narrow yellowish scales, the upright forked scales yellow; scales of mesonotum golden yellow and with an median vitta of black ones; scales of abdomen purplish black, and with a narrow fascia of whitish ones at the bases of the segments, becoming much broader on the venter; scales of legs black, those at base and on under side of femora, except toward the apex, also to extreme apices of femora, both ends of tibiæ and of the tarsal joints, except the last two and apex of the third on the front and middle tarsi, white those on last joint of hind tarsi wholly white; claws of front and middle tarsi toothed, those of the hind ones simple; wings hyaline, lateral scales of the veins long and narrow, first submarginal cell slightly over twice as long as its petiole.

Adult and puparial keys are presented for five Microdon species occurring in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. The original description of Microdon cockerelli Jones is revised, and a new species of Microdon is described.

Adult Euxoa tristicula (Morrison) males were specifically attracted to traps baited with Z-9-dodecenyl acetate (Z9-12:Ac) + n-dodecyl acetate (12:Ac). Best attractancy was obtained with 1:3 ratios of these components. Z-5- and Z-7-dodecenyl acetates and Z-9-tetradecenyl acetate inhibited lure attractancy. In electroantennogram measurements strong antennal responses were obtained only with 12:Ac, Z9-12:AC, and E9-12:Ac.
