A local theory of holomorphic curves in the complex hyperquadric is worked out using the method of moving frames. As a consequence a complete global characterization of totally isotropic curves is obtained.

This paper shows that amongst the p-groups of order p5, where p denotes an odd prime, there is only one group whose automorphism group is again a p-group. This automorphism group has order p6 and it is shown that this is the smallest order a p-group may have when it occurs as an automorphism group. The paper also shows that all groups of order p5 have an automorphism of order 2 apart from the group above and three other related groups.

We discuss the exponential growth in the height of the coefficients of the partial quotients of the continued fraction expansion of the square root of a generic polynomial.

We introduce a new class of generalized arcwise connected functions and discuss their basic properties. Our generalization is illustrated by an example and an application is given for a mathematical programming problem involving this new class of functions.

The main result in this paper is an existence theorem for the following complex nonlinear complementarity problem: find z such that

Let A be an abelian group, let ∧ = End (A), and assume that A is a flat left ∧-module. Then σ = { right ideals I ⊂ ∧ | IA = A} generates a linear topology oil ∧. We prove that Hom(A,·) is an equivalence from the category of those groups B ⊂ An satisfying B = Hom(A, B)A, onto the category of σ-closed submodules of finitely generated free right ∧-modules. Applications classify the right ideal structure of A, and classify torsion-free groups A of finite rank which are (nearly) isomorphic to each A-generated subgroup of finite index in A.

A ring R is said to be an AE-ring if every additive endomorphism is a ring endomorphism. In this paper further steps are made toward solving Sullivan's Problem of characterising these rings. The classification of AE-rings with. R3 ≠ 0 is completed. Complete characterisations are given for AE-rings which are either: (i) subdirectly irreducible, (ii) algebras over fields, or (iii) additively indecomposable. Substantial progress is made in classifying AE-rings which are mixed – the last open case – by imposing various finiteness conditions (chain conditions on special ideals, height restricting conditions). Several open questions are posed.

Let k be any given positive integer. We define the arithmetic function gk for any positive integer n by We first show that gk is periodic. Subsequently, we provide a detailed local analysis of the periodic function gk, and determine its smallest period. We also obtain an asymptotic formula for log lcm0≤i≤k {(n+i)2+1}.

A study is made of the minimum number of generators of the n-th direct power of certain finitely generated groups.

In this paper, we show that the direct of infinite finitely presented groups is always properly 3-realisable. We also show that classical hyperbolic groups are properly 3-realisable. We recall that a finitely presented group G is said to be properly 3-realisable if there exists a compact 2-polyhedron K with π1 (K) ≅ G and whose universal cover has the proper homotopy type of a (p.1.) 3-manifold with boundary. The question whether or not every finitely presented is properly 3-realisable remains open.

Extending recent results by Cascales et al. [‘Plasticity of the unit ball of a strictly convex Banach space’, Rev. R. Acad. Cienc. Exactas Fís. Nat. Ser. A Mat. 110(2) (2016), 723–727], we demonstrate that for every Banach space $X$ and every collection $Z_{i},i\in I$ , of strictly convex Banach spaces, every nonexpansive bijection from the unit ball of $X$ to the unit ball of the sum of $Z_{i}$ by $\ell _{1}$ is an isometry.

In this paper, it is proved that, for any domain G of the complex plane, there exists an infinite-dimensional closed linear submanifold M1 and a dense linear submanifold M2 with maximal algebraic dimension in the space H(G) of holomorphic functions on G such that G is the domain of holomorphy of every nonzero member f of M1 or M2 and, in addition, the growth of f near each boundary point is as fast as prescribed.

A variety is said to be a Rees–Sushkevich variety if it is contained in a periodic variety generated by 0-simple semigroups. Recently, all combinatorial Rees–Sushkevich varieties have been shown to be finitely based. The present paper continues the investigation of these varieties by describing those that are Cross, finitely generated, or small. It is shown that within the lattice of combinatorial Rees–Sushkevich varieties, the set ℱ of finitely generated varieties constitutes an incomplete sublattice and the set 𝒮 of small varieties constitutes a strict incomplete sublattice of ℱ. Consequently, a combinatorial Rees–Sushkevich variety is small if and only if it is Cross. An algorithm is also presented that decides if an arbitrarily given finite set Σ of identities defines, within the largest combinatorial Rees–Sushkevich variety, a subvariety that is finitely generated or small. This algorithm has complexity 𝒪(nk) where n is the number of identities in Σ and k is the length of the longest word in Σ.

In this paper we study a nonlinear elliptic equation involving p(x)-growth conditions on a bounded domain having cylindrical symmetry. We establish existence and multiplicity results using as main tools the mountain pass theorem of Ambosetti and Rabinowitz and Ekeland's variational principle.

Some methods are given for constructing regular r-valent r-connected non-hamiltonian graphs; often the graphs are also non-r-edge-colorable. The extent of the class of such graphs constructible from these methods and previous methods is discussed.

We define a subgraph of the zero divisor graph of a ring, associated to the ring idempotents. We study its properties and prove that for large classes of rings the connectedness of the graph is equivalent to the indecomposability of the ring and in those cases we also calculate the graph’s diameter.

In this paper the Perron integrability of the limit of a sequence of functions is proved under certain convergene conditions.

We study interior C1,1 regularity of generalised solutions of the Monge-Ampére equation det D2u = ψ, ψ ≥ 0, on a bounded convex domain Ω in ℝn with u = ϕ on ∂Ω. We prove in particular that u ∈ C1,1(Ω) if either i) ϕ = 0 and ψ1/(n − 1) ∈ C1,1 (Ω) or ii) Ω is C1,1 strongly convex, ϕ ∈ C1,1 (), ψ1/(n − 1) ∈ C1,1() and ψ > 0 on U ∩ Ω, where U is a neighbourhood of ∂Ω. The main tool is an improvement of Pogorelov's well known C1,1 estimate so that it can be applied to the degenerate case.
