In the present note, we offer a simple characterization of perfect rings in terms of their components and socle sequences, which is subsequently used to establish a one-to-one correspondence between perfect rings and certain finite additive categories. This correspondence is effected by means of a matrix representation, which describes the way in which perfect rings are built from local perfect rings.

A subset $A$ of a finite abelian group $G$ is called $(k,l)$-sum-free if the sum of $k$ (not necessarily distinct) elements of $A$ never equals the sum of $l$ (not necessarily distinct) elements of $A$. We find an explicit formula for the maximum size of a $(k,l)$-sum-free subset in $G$ for all $k$ and $l$ in the case when $G$ is cyclic by proving that it suffices to consider $(k,l)$-sum-free intervals in subgroups of $G$. This simplifies and extends earlier results by Hamidoune and Plagne [‘A new critical pair theorem applied to sum-free sets in abelian groups’, Comment. Math. Helv. 79(1) (2004), 183–207] and Bajnok [‘On the maximum size of a $(k,l)$-sum-free subset of an abelian group’, Int. J. Number Theory 5(6) (2009), 953–971].

We prove that for any prime power $q\notin \{3,4,5\}$ , the cubic extension $\mathbb {F}_{q^{3}}$ of the finite field $\mathbb {F}_{q}$ contains a primitive element $\xi $ such that $\xi +\xi ^{-1}$ is also primitive, and $\operatorname {\mathrm {Tr}}_{\mathbb {F}_{q^{3}}/\mathbb {F}_{q}}(\xi )=a$ for any prescribed $a\in \mathbb {F}_{q}$ . This completes the proof of a conjecture of Gupta et al. [‘Primitive element pairs with one prescribed trace over a finite field’, Finite Fields Appl. 54 (2018), 1–14] concerning the analogous problem over an extension of arbitrary degree $n\ge 3$ .

Functions of bounded kth variation and absolutely kth continuous functions are considered on sets and various properties are studied.

Let R and S be commutative rings, not necessarily with identity. We investigate the ideals, prime ideals, radical ideals, primary ideals, and maximal ideals of R×S. Unlike the case where R and S have an identity, an ideal (or primary ideal, or maximal ideal) of R×S need not be a ‘subproduct’ I×J of ideals. We show that for a ring R, for each commutative ring S every ideal (or primary ideal, or maximal ideal) is a subproduct if and only if R is an e-ring (that is, for r∈R, there exists er∈R with err=r) (or u-ring (that is, for each proper ideal A of R, )), the Abelian group (R/R2 ,+) has no maximal subgroups).

Let N denote the set of natural numbers and let φ be a mapping from N into itself. Then the composition transformmation Cφ, on the weighted l2 space with weights a2n, where n ∈ N and 0 < a < 1 is defined by Cφf = f ∘ φ. If Cφ is a bounded operator, then it is called a composition operator. The adjoint of the composition operator Cφ, is computed, and it is used to characterise normal, unitary, isometric, and co-isometric composition operators. Not every invertible φ induces an invertible composition operator, as is shown by examples. At the end of this note all invertible composition operators are characterised.

Two new simple groups have recently been discovered by Z. Janko. One of these groups has order 50,232,960. As a first step in showing that there is precisely one (up to isomorphism) simple group of order 50,232,960, the author proves in this paper the following result: If G is a non-abelian simple group of order 50,232,960, then the structure of the centralizer of an element of order two in G is uniquely determined.

In a note added on 21 April 1969 to this paper, the author announces that he has proved the uniqueness of the simple group of order 50,232,960.

For years it has remained a problem to find suitable functionals satisfying certain maximum principles for solutions of the equation Δu + f(x, u) = 0. In this paper, maximum principles for certain functionals which are defined on solutions of semilinear elliptic equations subject to mixed or Robin boundary conditions are obtained. The principles derived may be used to deduce bounds on important quantities in physical problems of interest.

Let x: Mn → Em be an isometric immersion of an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold into the m-dimensional Euclidean space. Then the map (where t denotes transpose) is called the quadric representation of Mn. In this paper, we study and classify hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Em which satisfy , where B and C are two constant matrices, and Δ is the Laplacian operator of Mn. Some classification results are obtained.

In the 2006 edition of the Kourovka Notebook, Berkovich poses the following problem (Problem 16.13): Let $p$ be a prime and $P$ be a finite $p$-group. Can $P$ have every maximal subgroup special? We show that the structure of such groups is very restricted, but for all primes there are groups of arbitrarily large size with this property.

Let L = L(X) be the free Lie ring of countable rank and let p be prime. Then L(Vp) = L/[(L')p, L] is the relatively free ring for the variety of Lie rings Vp = [Np−1A, E] and Vp is defined by the identity

The purpose of this note is to establish that there exist elements of order p in the additive group of L(Vp). Previously, the existence of p-torsion was proved by Kuz'min for p = 2 only. Similar results were obtained for varieties of groups by Gupta when p = 2 and by Stöhr when p = 3.

The Banach–Mazur separable quotient problem asks whether every infinite-dimensional Banach space $B$ has a quotient space that is an infinite-dimensional separable Banach space. The question has remained open for over 80 years, although an affirmative answer is known in special cases such as when $B$ is reflexive or even a dual of a Banach space. Very recently, it has been shown to be true for dual-like spaces. An analogous problem for topological groups is: Does every infinite-dimensional (in the topological sense) connected (Hausdorff) topological group $G$ have a quotient topological group that is infinite dimensional and metrisable? While this is known to be true if $G$ is the underlying topological group of an infinite-dimensional Banach space, it is shown here to be false even if $G$ is the underlying topological group of an infinite-dimensional locally convex space. Indeed, it is shown that the free topological vector space on any countably infinite $k_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}$-space is an infinite-dimensional toplogical vector space which does not have any quotient topological group that is infinite dimensional and metrisable. By contrast, the Graev free abelian topological group and the Graev free topological group on any infinite connected Tychonoff space, both of which are connected topological groups, are shown here to have the tubby torus $\mathbb{T}^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}}$, which is an infinite-dimensional metrisable group, as a quotient group.

It is shown that a homomorphism from a commutative, idempotent and medial groupoid with a reducible set of generators into another medial groupoid may be characterized by certain simultaneous equations. This result is used to characterize the arithmetic mean without introducing either continuity or order.

A pair of bodies rolling on each other is an interesting example of nonholonomic systems in control theory. Here the controllability of rolling bodies is investigated with a global approach. By using simple geometric facts, this problem has been completely solved in the special case where one of them is a plane or a sphere.

We detail the sequence (fn) where fn = [(n + 1)θ + ø] − [nθ + ø] − [θ]. This description of the inhomogeneous Beatty sequence generalises earlier work dealing with special cases in which ø is restricted to rational values.

In this paper, we prove an analogue of Beurling's theorem on the Heisenberg group. Then we derive some other versions of the uncertainty principle.

It is known that the space of boundedly finite integer-valued measures on a complete separable metric space becomes a complete separable metric space when endowed with the weak-hash metric. It is also known that convergence under this topology can be characterised in a way that is similar to the weak convergence of totally finite measures. However, the original proofs of these two fundamental results assume that a certain term is monotonic, which is not the case as we show by a counterexample. We clarify these original proofs by addressing the parts that rely on this assumption and finding alternative arguments.

We prove that maximal annuli in 𝕃3 bounded by circles, straight lines or cone points in a pair of parallel spacelike planes are part of either a Lorentzian catenoid or a Lorentzian Riemann’s example. We show that under the same boundary condition, the same conclusion holds even when the maximal annuli have a planar end. Moreover, we extend Shiffman’s convexity result to maximal annuli; but by using Perron’s method we construct a maximal annulus with a planar end where a Shiffman-type result fails.
