Let α > 0 and let f[α](z) be the αth fractional derivative of an analytic function f on the unit disc D. In this paper we show that f ∈ BMOA if and only if |f[α](z)|2 (l - |z|2)2α−1dA(z) is a Carleson measure and f ∈ VMOA if and only if |f[α](z)|2 (1 − |z|2)2α−1dA(z) is a vanishing Carleson measure, where A denotes the normalised Lebesgue measure on D. Hence a significant extension of familiar characterisations for analytic functions of bounded and vanishing mean oscillation is obtained.

Let Si, i ∈ I, be a set of semigroups such that Si ∩ Sj = U, if i ≠ j, and such that U is a unitary subsemi-group of Si for each i in I. The semigroup amalgam [{Si | i ∈ I}; U] determined by this system is the partial groupoid G = USi in which a product of two elements is defined if and only if they both belong to the same Si and their product is then taken as their product in Si. In 1962, J.M. Howie showed that the amalgam G is embeddable in the free product of the Si, amalgamating U. To prove this result it suffices to find any semigroup in which G can be embedded. In this paper, by taking convenient representations of the Si, adapting a method recently (1975) used by T.E. Hall for inverse semigroups, we provide a short method of constructing such a semigroup.

Using the method of exponential dichotomies, we establish a new existence and uniqueness theorem for almost automorphic solutions of differential equations with piecewise constant argument of the form

Let Un be the open unit polydisc, and let T be a mapping from Un into itself. Then the composition transformation CT is a mapping on the Hardy space H2(Un) into the space of complex functions on Un defined as CTf = f ∘ T for every f ∈ H2(Un). An attempt is made to study some properties of CT in this note. A partial generalization of a result of Schwartz, and a relation between intertwining analytic Toeplitz operators and composition operators are reported.

In this note a converse duality theorem is proved for a class of nonlinear programming problems over polyhedral cones in finite dimensional complex space by a direct use of a Kuhn-Tucker type necessary and sufficient condition for constrained optimization in complex space.

Some inequalities for superadditive functionals defined on convex cones in linear spaces are given, with applications for various mappings associated with the Jensen, Hölder, Minkowski and Schwarz inequalities.

The purpose of the paper is to show that the Harte spectrum and the bicommutant spectrum of an arbitrary n−tuple of normal Hilbert space operators can be obtained from the spectral set γ introduced by McIntosh and Pryde. It is also proved that many commonly used joint spectra of an n−tuple of normal m by m matrices are equal. These results are non-commutative variants of some theorems proved by McIntosh, Pryde, and Ricker for commuting sets of operators.

A duality theorem of Wolfe for non-linear differentiable programming is now extended to minimization of a non-differentiable, convex, objective function defined on a general locally convex topological linear space with a non-differentiable operatorial constraint, which is regularly subdifferentiable. The gradients are replaced by subgradients. This extended duality theorem is then applied to a programming problem where the objective function is the sum of a positively homogeneous, lower semi continuous, convex function and a subdifferentiable, convex function. We obtain another duality theorem which generalizes a result of Schechter.

In this paper, we give several inequalities concerning the genus and the degree of the Jones Polynomial of an adequate link and of a homogeneous link and their applications.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\in (0,\infty ]$ be a real number. In this short note, we extend a recent result of Marques and Ramirez [‘On exceptional sets: the solution of a problem posed by K. Mahler’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.94 (2016), 15–19] by proving that any subset of $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}\cap B(0,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})$, which is closed under complex conjugation and contains $0$, is the exceptional set of uncountably many analytic transcendental functions with rational coefficients and radius of convergence $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$. This solves the question posed by K. Mahler completely.

Let k,r≥2 be two integers. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of k-free values of the r variables polynomial t1⋯tr−1 over [1,x]r∩ℤr.

We show that the dual to any subspace of $c_{0}({\rm\Gamma})$ (${\rm\Gamma}$ is an arbitrary index set) has the strongest possible quantitative version of the Schur property. Further, we establish a relationship between the quantitative Schur property and quantitative versions of the Dunford–Pettis property. Finally, we apply these results to show, in particular, that any subspace of the space of compact operators on $\ell _{p}$ ($1<p<\infty$) with the Dunford–Pettis property automatically satisfies both its quantitative versions.

We shall show how each multifunction on a Banach space determines a convex function that gives a considerable amount of information about the structure of the multifunction. Using standard results on convex functions and a standard minimax theorem, we strengthen known results on the local boundedness of a monotone operator, and the convexity of the interior and closure of the domain of a maximal monotone operator. In addition, we prove that any point surrounded by (in a sense made precise) the convex hull of the domain of a maximal monotone operator is automatically in the interior of the domain, thus settling an open problem.

A group G is called morphic if every endomorphism α:G→G for which Gα◃G satisfies G/Gα≅ker (α). Call an endomorphism α∈end(G) regular if αβα=α for some β∈end(G), and call α unit regular if β can be chosen to be an automorphism of G. The main purpose of this paper is to prove the following group-theoretic analogue of a theorem of Ehrlich: if G is a morphic group, an endomorphism α:G→G for which Gα◃G is unit regular if and only if it is regular. As an application, a cancellation theorem is proved that characterizes the morphic groups among those with regular endomorphism monoids.

Let M (N) be a σ–algebra of subsets of a set S (T) and let X, Y be Banach spaces with (,) a continuous bilinear map from X × Y into the scalar field. If μ: M → X (v: N → Y) is a vector measure and λ is the scalar measure defined on the measurable rectangles A × B, A ∈ M, B ∈ N, by λ(A×B) = 〈μ(A), v(B)〉, it is known that λ is generally not countably additive on the algebra generated by the measurable rectangles and therefore has no countably additive extension to the σ-algebra generated by the measurable rectangles. If μ (v) is an indefinite Pettis integral it is shown that a necessary and sufficient condition that λ have a countable additive extension to the σ-algebra generated by the measurable rectangles is that the function F: (s, t) → 〈f(s), g(t)〉 is integrable with respect to α × β.

Spherical radial basis functions are used to define approximate solutions to pseudodifferential equations of negative order on the unit sphere. These equations arise from geodesy. The approximate solutions are found by the collocation method. A salient feature of our approach in this paper is a simple error analysis for the collocation method using the same argument as that for the Galerkin method.

We consider twists of matrix algebras by some continuous characters. There are some subgroups of Brauer groups arising from these twists. Some results regarding these subgroups are proved.

For $f$ analytic in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$, we consider the close-to-convex analogue of a class of starlike functions introduced by R. Singh [‘On a class of star-like functions’, Compos. Math.19(1) (1968), 78–82]. This class of functions is defined by $|zf^{\prime }(z)/g(z)-1|<1$ for $z\in \mathbb{D}$, where $g$ is starlike in $\mathbb{D}$. Coefficient and other results are obtained for this class of functions.

In J. Math. Mech. 15 (1966), 877–898, Bonic and Frampton have laid the foundation for a general theory of smoothness of Banach spaces. In this paper, we shall study one aspect of the smoothness of topological vector spaces, namely, the relationship between smoothness and inductive and protective limits of topological vector spaces. As a consequence, we obtain smoothness results for nuclear spaces and some Montei spaces.
