For an edge $uv$ in a graph $G$, $W_{u,v}^{G}$ denotes the set of all vertices of $G$ that are closer to $u$ than to $v$. A graph $G$ is said to be quasi-distance-balanced if there exists a constant $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}>1$ such that $|W_{u,v}^{G}|=\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}^{\pm 1}|W_{v,u}^{G}|$ for every pair of adjacent vertices $u$ and $v$. The existence of nonbipartite quasi-distance-balanced graphs is an open problem. In this paper we investigate the possible structure of cycles in quasi-distance-balanced graphs and generalise the previously known result that every quasi-distance-balanced graph is triangle-free. We also prove that a connected quasi-distance-balanced graph admitting a bridge is isomorphic to a star. Several open problems are posed.

In this paper, it is proved that the complement of the zero-divisor graph of a partially ordered set is weakly perfect if it has finite clique number, completely answering the question raised by Joshi and Khiste [‘Complement of the zero divisor graph of a lattice’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 89 (2014), 177–190]. As a consequence, the intersection graph of an intersection-closed family of nonempty subsets of a set is weakly perfect if it has finite clique number. These results are applied to annihilating-ideal graphs and intersection graphs of submodules.

For two given graphs $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, the planar Ramsey number $PR(G_{1},G_{2})$ is the smallest integer $N$ such that every planar graph $G$ on $N$ vertices either contains $G_{1}$, or its complement contains $G_{2}$. Let $C_{4}$ be a quadrilateral, $T_{n}$ a tree of order $n\geq 3$ with maximum degree $k$, and $K_{1,k}$ a star of order $k+1$. We show that $PR(C_{4},T_{n})=\max \{n+1,PR(C_{4},K_{1,k})\}$. Combining this with a result of Chen et al. [‘All quadrilateral-wheel planar Ramsey numbers’, Graphs Combin.33 (2017), 335–346] yields exact values of all the quadrilateral-tree planar Ramsey numbers.

Let $\mathbb{N}$ be the set of all nonnegative integers. For a given set $S\subset \mathbb{N}$ the representation function $R_{S}(n)$ counts the number of solutions of the equation $n=s+s^{\prime }$ with $s<s^{\prime }$ and $s,s^{\prime }\in S$. We obtain some results on a problem of Chen and Lev [‘Integer sets with identical representation functions’, Integers16 (2016), Article ID A36, 4 pages] about sets $A$ and $B$ such that $A\cup B=\mathbb{N}$, $A\cap B=r+m\mathbb{N}$ and whose representation functions coincide.

Varieties of the form $G\times S_{\!\text{reg}}$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple group and $S_{\!\text{reg}}$ is a regular Slodowy slice in the Lie algebra of $G$, arise naturally in hyperkähler geometry, theoretical physics and the theory of abstract integrable systems. Crooks and Rayan [‘Abstract integrable systems on hyperkähler manifolds arising from Slodowy slices’, Math. Res. Let., to appear] use a Hamiltonian $G$-action to endow $G\times S_{\!\text{reg}}$ with a canonical abstract integrable system. To understand examples of abstract integrable systems arising from Hamiltonian $G$-actions, we consider a holomorphic symplectic variety $X$ carrying an abstract integrable system induced by a Hamiltonian $G$-action. Under certain hypotheses, we show that there must exist a $G$-equivariant variety isomorphism $X\cong G\times S_{\!\text{reg}}$.

Let $G$ be a finite solvable group and let $p$ be a prime. We prove that the intersection of the kernels of irreducible monomial $p$-Brauer characters of $G$ with degrees divisible by $p$ is $p$-closed.

We derive some structural properties of a trifactorised finite group $G=AB=AC=BC$, where $A$, $B$, and $C$ are subgroups of $G$, provided that $A=A_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}}\times A_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{\prime }}$ and $B=B_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}}\times B_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{\prime }}$ are $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$-decomposable groups, for a set of primes $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$.

Let $k$ be a nonnegative integer. A subgroup $X$ of a group $G$ has normal length $k$ in $G$ if all chains between $X$ and its normal closure $X^{G}$ have length at most $k$, and $k$ is the length of at least one of these chains. The group $G$ is said to have finite normal length if there is a finite upper bound for the normal lengths of its subgroups. The aim of this paper is to study groups of finite normal length. Among other results, it is proved that if all subgroups of a locally (soluble-by-finite) group $G$ have finite normal length in $G$, then the commutator subgroup $G^{\prime }$ is finite and so $G$ has finite normal length. Special attention is given to the structure of groups of normal length $2$. In particular, it is shown that finite groups with this property admit a Sylow tower.

The catenary degree is an invariant that measures the distance between factorisations of elements within an atomic monoid. In this paper, we classify which finite subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ occur as the set of catenary degrees of a numerical monoid (that is, a co-finite, additive submonoid of $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$). In particular, we show that, with one exception, every finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ that can possibly occur as the set of catenary degrees of some atomic monoid is actually achieved by a numerical monoid.

Based on the abstract version of the Smital property, we introduce an operator $DS$. We use it to characterise the class of semitopological abelian groups, for which addition is a quasicontinuous operation.

Let ${\mathcal{S}}$ denote the class of analytic and univalent functions in $\mathbb{D}:=\{z\in \mathbb{C}:|z|<1\}$ which are of the form $f(z)=z+\sum _{n=2}^{\infty }a_{n}z^{n}$. We determine sharp estimates for the Toeplitz determinants whose elements are the Taylor coefficients of functions in ${\mathcal{S}}$ and certain of its subclasses. We also discuss similar problems for typically real functions.

We consider the uniqueness of an entire function and a linear differential polynomial generated by it. One of our results improves a result of Li and Yang [‘Value sharing of an entire function and its derivatives’, J. Math. Soc. Japan51(4) (1999), 781–799].

It is shown that various definitions of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$-Connes amenability and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$-contractibility are equivalent to older and simpler concepts.

Extending recent results by Cascales et al. [‘Plasticity of the unit ball of a strictly convex Banach space’, Rev. R. Acad. Cienc. Exactas Fís. Nat. Ser. A Mat. 110(2) (2016), 723–727], we demonstrate that for every Banach space $X$ and every collection $Z_{i},i\in I$ , of strictly convex Banach spaces, every nonexpansive bijection from the unit ball of $X$ to the unit ball of the sum of $Z_{i}$ by $\ell _{1}$ is an isometry.

New inequalities relating the norm $n(X)$ and the numerical radius $w(X)$ of invertible bounded linear Hilbert space operators were announced by Hosseini and Omidvar [‘Some inequalities for the numerical radius for Hilbert space operators’, Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.94 (2016), 489–496]. For example, they asserted that $w(AB)\leq$$2w(A)w(B)$ for invertible bounded linear Hilbert space operators $A$ and $B$. We identify implicit hypotheses used in their discovery. The inequalities and their proofs can be made good by adding the extra hypotheses which take the form $n(X^{-1})=n(X)^{-1}$. We give counterexamples in the absence of such additional hypotheses. Finally, we show that these hypotheses yield even stronger conclusions, for example, $w(AB)=w(A)w(B)$.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ be an analytic self-map of the unit disc. If $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ is analytic in a neighbourhood of the closed unit disc, we give a precise formula for the essential norm of the composition operator $C_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}}$ on the weighted Dirichlet spaces ${\mathcal{D}}_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$ for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}>0$. We also show that, for a univalent analytic self-map $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ of $\mathbb{D}$, if $\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}$ has an angular derivative at some point of $\unicode[STIX]{x2202}\mathbb{D}$, then the essential norm of $C_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D711}}$ on the Dirichlet space is equal to one.

For every rotation $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ ($n\geq 3$), we find an upper bound for the number $r$ such that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ is a product of $r$ rotations by an angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ ($0<\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\leq \unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$). We also find an upper bound for the number $r$ such that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ can be written as a product of $r$ full rotations by an angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$.

For a convex domain, we use Klain’s cyclic rearrangement to obtain a sequence of convex domains with increasing area and the same perimeter which converges to a disk. As a byproduct, we give a proof of the classical isoperimetric inequality in the plane.

A generalised topology is a collection of subsets of a given nonempty set containing the empty set and arbitrary unions of the elements in the collection. By using the concept of hereditary classes, a generalised topology can be extended to a new one, called a generalised topology via a hereditary class. We study continuity on generalised topological spaces via hereditary classes in various situations.
