A study was undertaken of the seasonal abundance, feeding habits, resting habits and malaria infection rates of the sibling species Anopheles gambiae Giles and A. arabiensis Patton on the Kano Plain, Kenya, and the surrounding foothills. A. arabiensis was the dominant species on the plains and A. gambiae in the foothills. A. gambiae was highly anthropophilic with 92% feeding on man, whereas 59% of A. arabiensis fed on cattle. In both species, the choice of host was affected by the availability of cattle. A. arabiensis rested out of doors more commonly than A. gambiae. The sporozoite rate in A. gambiae was 5·33%, 15·98 times higher than the rate of 0·33% found in A. arabiensis.

The above-water food webs of arthropod communities in irrigated rice fields on Luzon Island, Philippines, were studied over the growing season at five sites (Los Baños, Cabanatuan, Bayombong, Kiangan, Banaue) ranging in elevation from 22 m to 1524 m. Arthropod populations were vacuum-sampled at roughly weekly intervals from the date after seedlings were transplanted to flowering at each site. Site- and time-specific webs were constructed from a 687-taxa cumulative Philippines web and time-series of species present. Taxonomic composition, food web structure, and arthropod phenology were broadly similar across different sites. Arthropod abundance was inversely associated with altitude across the five sites, but numbers of taxa and links and six food web statistics showed no obvious increasing or decreasing trend with altitude. The rise of taxa, links and mean food chain length over the growing season at each site reflected an increase in plant size with age and, at some sites, an orderly accumulation of newly arriving herbivore, predator, parasitoid and omnivore species. At each site, herbivores built up faster than predators and parasitoids, and predators arrived faster than parasitoids; the difference between the latest and earliest sampling dates of first arrivals, averaged over the five sites, was 38, 63 and 73 days for herbivores, predators and parasitoids, respectively. Site-to-site consistencies in food web properties and first arrivals suggest that such patterns may be influenced more by crop age than by geography or altitude. Sampled predator, parasitoid and omnivore taxa potentially encountered only a subset of their lifetime prey and predator species at any particular time in the rice field. Prey lists cumulated over time may underestimate the temporal specificity of predation by potential biological control agents. Research opportunities linking rice food webs and integrated pest management with East Indies biogeography are proposed.

1. A warm object is more attractive to the female yellow-fever mosquito than a cooler object, such that the numbers touching a ball warmed to 100° or 110°F. were twice as great as those touching a ball 20°F. cooler. This attractiveness was reversed when the temperature of the warmer ball reached 120°F.

2. This response is eliminated by the insertion of an air-tight window of thallium bromoiodide, despite the fact that it allows almost all of the radiation to filter through. It is therefore concluded that heat convection, which is eliminated by the air-tight window, is the factor which makes a warm object attractive to the mosquito.

3. The several faces of a warm cube, differing in their radiant emissivity but identical as to surface temperature, exhibited attractancies to Aëdes which were not significantly different one from another (except in the case of black enamel, which will be explained in a later paper). These results may be interpreted to indicate that radiation plays no part in the attraction of the mosquitos to the warm face.

4. It is concluded that the failure of Parker (1948) to obtain a positive response of Aëdes mosquitos to a warm dry object was due to the fact that his apparatus allowed only the radiant heat but not the convective heat to reach the insects.

5 Since the response of Aëdes aegypti to heat is eliminated by a window transparent to infra-red radiation, the theory of olfaction proposed by Beck and Miles (1947) evidently has no application to this species of mosquito.

In this paper we describe a semi-automated digital image analysis system which is capable of discriminating five closely related species of Ichneumonidae. Specimens were distinguished by differences in their wings. The system functions by (a) extracting the significant variation (principal components) among a training set of images of the same species, (b) using these principal components to efficiently represent the morphology of wings of that species, and (c) exploiting the fact that images of the same species will share characteristic principal components, while images of different species will not. Such an approach allows the construction of modular species classifiers, to which like species correlate strongly, while dissimilar species do not. A recognition accuracy of 94% was achieved when the system was tested on 175 images of wings of the five ichneumonids. The wing images were caricatured to accentuate their venation and pigmentation patterns.

Four morphologically cryptic species of the Bactrocera dorsalis fruit fly complex (B. dorsalis s.s., B. papayae, B. carambolae and B. philippinensis) are serious agricultural pests. As they are difficult to diagnose using traditional taxonomic techniques, we examined the potential for geometric morphometric analysis of wing size and shape to discriminate between them. Fifteen wing landmarks generated size and shape data for 245 specimens for subsequent comparisons among three geographically distinct samples of each species. Intraspecific wing size was significantly different within samples of B. carambolae and B. dorsalis s.s. but not within samples of B. papayae or B. philippinensis. Although B. papayae had the smallest wings (average centroid size=6.002 mm±0.061 SE) and B. dorsalis s.s. the largest (6.349 mm±0.066 SE), interspecific wing size comparisons were generally non-informative and incapable of discriminating species. Contrary to the wing size data, canonical variate analysis based on wing shape data discriminated all species with a relatively high degree of accuracy; individuals were correctly reassigned to their respective species on average 93.27% of the time. A single sample group of B. carambolae from locality ‘TN Malaysia’ was the only sample to be considerably different from its conspecific groups with regards to both wing size and wing shape. This sample was subsequently deemed to have been originally misidentified and likely represents an undescribed species. We demonstrate that geometric morphometric techniques analysing wing shape represent a promising approach for discriminating between morphologically cryptic taxa of the B. dorsalis species complex.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the genetic similarity and structure of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), populations associated with maize and cotton crops in Brazil using amplified fragment length polymorphisms. Mean genetic similarity among populations was 0.45. The unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean analysis dendrograms did not separate populations of S. frugiperda into clusters related to the host plant in which the insects were collected. No genetic variation was observed among maize and cotton populations of S. frugiperda, suggesting that the same populations are injuring both crops in Brazil. This research validates the need for stewardship of crop-protection methods for managing S. frugiperda to reduce the incidence of pesticide resistance, due to the spatial and temporal overlapping of maize and cotton crops in some regions in Brazil.

Predatory beetles contribute to the control of crop pests and are an important food resource for farmland birds. Many of these beetle species overwinter as larvae within agricultural soils, however, their spatio-temporal emergence patterns are poorly understood, even though such knowledge can assist with their management for biocontrol. Soil moisture is considered to be a key factor influencing oviposition site selection and larval survival. The time, density and spatial pattern of Carabidae and Staphylidae emergence was therefore measured across two fields and compared to soil moisture levels in the previous winter and adult distribution in the previous July. The mean density of Carabidae and Staphylidae that emerged between April and harvest within each field was 157 and 86 m−2, indicating that soils are an important over-wintering habitat for beneficial invertebrates and should be managed sympathetically if numbers are to be increased. Of the species that were sufficiently numerous to allow their spatial pattern to be analysed, all showed a heterogeneous emergence pattern, although patches with high emergence were stable over the sampling period. The distribution of eight species was influenced by soil moisture levels in the previous winter and eight species, although not the same, were spatially associated with the distribution of adults in the previous summer suggesting that the females selected oviposition areas with the appropriate soil wetness.

The relative antibacterial activities of excretion/secretion (ES) from two carrion-feeding insects, Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy and Dermestes maculatus DeGeer, and a detritivore, Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus, were compared to that of Lucilia sericata Meigen, a species with ES of known antibacterial capacity, in order to explore the antimicrobial potential of other carrion and detritivore species. Viable counts were used to assess time-kill of ES against five bacterial species, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis. Antibacterial activity was recorded in all four insect species although T. molitor and D. maculatus were the most effective in controlling growth of P. mirabilis. The blowflies were more effective in controlling a wider range of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The larval ES from all species was shown to reduce bacterial growth rate although differences in antibacterial spectrum were noted and the degree of potency varied between the four species. These differences may be explained ecologically by the different colonisation times of each insect species on the corpse. Overall, this study demonstrates that research into other carrion-feeding insect species has potential to provide an increased source of antimicrobial chemicals to broaden the range of bacterial species beyond that currently controlled using L. sericata.

Berlese's fluid has been known to entomologists for many years as a medium for making microscope mounts of small Arthropods; it has not been widely used, for which its unreliable keeping quality is perhaps partly responsible. It was developed by the late Professor A. Berlese, chiefly as a mountant for mites; apparently he did not publish the formula.

Night-time observations on adults of Heliothis armigera (Hb.), and data from light-trap and hand net catches in irrigated and dryland crops, showed that both sexes flew and fed and females oviposited between 20.00 and 23.00 h. From then until 02.00 h both sexes were inactive, but. from 02.00 to 04.00 h the males flew above the crop in a ‘purposeful’ manner, while the females were stationary and releasing pheromone. During this period of high male and low female activity, copulation in cages, assembly of males to females in cages and copulating pairs on crop plants were all observed. Inseminated female H. armigera were collected in crops which were at a stage suitable for oviposition, while traps away from crops or near mature crops collected mainly virgin females. It is suggested that susceptible crops attract H. armigera adults and that, once within the crop, inseminated females are ‘trapped’ by suitable physiological cues from the plants. Identification of such cues could assist in the breeding of crop varieties resistant to H. armigera attack.

The attack rate of four parasitoids against different aphid species was investigated in the absence and presence of leaves from aphid food plants. The parasitoids used, Aphidius ervi Haliday, A. rhopalosiphi De Stefani, A. picipes (Nees) and Ephedrus plagiator Nees, varied in the extent of their host ranges. The presence of plant leaves significantly influenced the attack rate of A. ervi and A. rhopalosiphi, the two parasitoids with the most restricted host ranges, but did not appear to affect attack rates by the more polyphagous A. picipes and E. plagiator. Consideration of these results together with those from previous studies on the host preferences of laboratory populations of A. ervi and A. rhopalosiphi leads to the conclusion that genotype is probably determining the responses of individual parasitoids to semiochemicals involved in host recognition. It is proposed that field populations of oligophagous aphid parasitoids consist of a mixture of specialist and generalist individuals.

Thirty-five species of mosquitoes (10 782 adults) were caught in modified CDC light-traps during the 27-week rice cultivation cycle at Ahero, Kenya, in the period September 1972 to March 1973. Only 0·8% were blood-fed and 5·1% gravid, indicating that the traps were sampling newly emerged adults. During weeks 1–7, before rice seedlings were transplanted, catches were small, but increased markedly from then until harvest (week 20). Two groups of mosquito species were recognised: the first, including Mansonia uniformis (Theo.), M. africana (Theo.) and Mimomyia splendens Theo., bred throughout the rice cycle; the second, including Anopheles gambiae s.l., A. pharoensis Theo., A. ziemanni Grünb., Culex poicilipes (Theo.) and C. antennatus (Becker), were affected by water depth and height of the rice crop. The slurry of shallow muddy pools which follows transplanting stimulated intense breeding of A. gambiae and A. pharoensis. Once the young plants were established, reflooding of the fields and subsequent growth of water plants and algae favoured the breeding of A. ziemanni and C. poicilipes. Towards the end of the rice cycle large numbers of C. antennatus were caught. It is concluded that mosquito control by means of insecticides or by irrigation management would be possible.

The rate of dung-pat degradation in cattle pastures in south west England was examined between May and September 2002, using batches of standardized, 1.5 kg, artificially-formed cow pats. In pats in which insects were allowed free access, the rate of disappearance, measured as ash-free dry weight, was faster in spring than summer and the loss of organic matter ranged between 0.69 and 1.99% per day, equating to an estimated time for complete disappearance of 57–78 and 88–111 days in spring and summer, respectively. To assess the role of colonizing insects on decomposition, six batches of pats were constructed and either left uncovered or, using fine mesh cages, were covered for 2, 7 or 14 days following deposition to exclude colonizing insects, after which they were uncovered. After 35 days all pats were then retrieved from the field, the composition of the invertebrate community within each pat was determined and the degree of degradation, measured as ash-free dry weight, was assessed. Covered pats had significantly higher rates of ash-free dry weight loss than uncovered pats. From the 180 pats that were recovered and searched, larvae of Aphodius (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) were the most numerous taxon collected (1435 individuals). Aphodius larvae were significantly more abundant in pats that remained uncovered or were covered for 2 days only, compared to pats that had been covered for 7 or 14 days. The results show that the exclusion of insects for as little as two days following deposition causes a significant reduction in both the insect population and the subsequent rate of pat degradation.

The excretions of the blowfly maggot, Lucilia sericata, have been found to contain a potent bactericide, and the technique for the collection of this material is given. There is evidence that other insects besides the one investigated may also produce this substance.

The active principle is not destroyed by autoclaving at 10 pounds' pressure for 20 minutes and desiccation does not inactivate it.

The bactericidal action of the substance was demonstrated by tests on seven species of bacteria, most of which are of aetiological importance in osteomyelitis and other suppurative infections. The lethal action against such organisms seems to be an important factor in the good results obtained with maggot therapy.

The work seems to open a field in which interesting investigations could be conducted with possibilities of producing other new and useful disinfectants from living organisms.

This report contains a record of the trypanosome infections, food and breeding of G. morsitans and G. tachinoides obtained by examining the flies at various foci over a period of fourteen months.

It confirms the fact that the breeding of both species is practically confined to the dry season and follows a period of increased food supply. G. tachinoides is well fed through the rains, except in one month of flood, and starts breeding as soon as the rains cease, owing to its habit of feeding on reptiles. G. morsitans starts free breeding about six weeks later, as its increased food supply is due to the ungulates becoming more available.

G. morsitans does not feed on reptiles, but in times of hunger draws a proportion of its food from birds, the largest proportion recorded being 17 per cent, in one month at one focus. It draws the bulk of its food in this locality from small antelope, large game being scarce. G. tachinoides is much less specialised in its diet, and in the wet season nearly one-fifth of its food was drawn from a group of animals which included man, monkey and dog.

The infection of the flies with T. vivax and T. congolense bears a close relation to the amount of blood obtained from antelope, and consequently morsitans is in general nearly four times as heavily infected as tachinoides. Infections with T. brucei and T. gambiense are scarce in this locality. Trypanosome infection rises just before the main breeding season in morsitans in all localities and in tachinoides in places where the fly is largely a mammal feeder. The proportional infection in general falls in the season of most rapid breeding, owing to masking of the actual rise by the number of young flies examined. It rises rapidly when breeding ceases. The total infection is reduced when fly food is hard to obtain, in the time of long grass and flood, owing to T. vivax infections dying out when the flies are starved.

It is shown that in some cases T. grayi may be obtained by tachinoides when it feeds on Varanus, and a somewhat similar infection in the laboratory may be obtained by feeding the flies on toads.

There is just an indication that postponement of grass burning may interfere with the free breeding of morsitans and in some cases that of tachinoides. This possibility is to be tested.

The experiment of excluding game and pig from one of the dry season foci of the flies by means of fencing will be carried out.

A method for estimating population changes of Aphis fabae Scop. on bean plots is described. This involved the classification of bean stems in the field according to five arbitary classes of infestation and the removal to the laboratory of ten samples of each class of infested stem for the estimation of their Aphid numbers. A simple volumetric method for counting large numbers of A. fabae is described and the results obtained from three bean plots are presented.

The life-history of Contarinia nasturtii (Kieff.), a gall-forming pest of swedes, was investigated in northern England in 1958–60, particular attention being paid to the influence of temperature and moisture on development in the soil. Most of the observations were made under controlled conditions in the laboratory, although much of the material came from the field.

The adults emerge from the soil, mate, and live 1–3 days. In laboratory conditions, each female developed about 95 eggs, laid in batches of 2–50 on the young leaves of the host plant, and produced 78·7±11·4 unisexual larval progeny. The eggs require moist conditions, and hatched according to temperature after 1–10 days at 30–10°C. The larvae fed for 7–21 days at 25–15°C., producing a gall.

The full-grown larvae burrow into the soil. It was found that they either pupated in oval-shaped cocoons just below the surface, producing adults 10–48 days later (at 25–12°C.) or become dormant in spherical cocoons. At 32·5°C. the pupae died, and below 32·5°C. males developed faster than females by about 24 hours.

Dormancy is caused either by diapause, in which case the larvae require prolonged chilling before development can be resumed, or by drought, in which case development is resumed immediately in response to wetting.

The incidence of diapause increased regularly during the summer generations, probably in response to decreasing day-length, and the larvae tended to avoid diapause when placed in high temperatures (e.g., 25°C.). The firmness of diapause appeared to vary according to the conditions experienced by the feeding and full-grown larvae, but, in general, the larvae completed diapause development after 100 days at 2–5°C. followed by 30 days at 20–25°C., i.e., after exposure to conditions similar to those experienced by the diapause larvae during winter and spring.

Dormancy due to drought (quiescence) affected both non-diapause and post-diapause larvae; the former became quiescent on entering dry soil (pF>3·5–4·0), and the latter remained inactive if kept in dry or even in moist soil (pF 3·4) after completing diapause. In both cases, the termination of dormancy occurred immediately in response to a thorough wetting of the soil. The larvae left their spherical cocoons, moved to the surface, re-entered the ground and pupated in oval cocoons as if entering the soil for the first time.

Factors that delay pupation of C. nasturtii similarly delay the development of its Hymenopterous parasites and hence synchronise the emergence of the adult parasites with the host's feeding stage.

Field populations of Lucilia cuprina (Wied.) in New South Wales were sampled for periods of 3 h on numerous occasions between 1975 and 1982 using West Australian blowfly traps. Ambient temperature, wind speed, relative humidity and solar radiation explained 77·4% of the within-day deviance of the catches. Temperature alone accounted for 74·9% of this deviance, indicating that the other variables, although significant, did not greatly affect trap catches. As air temperatures increased, log catch rates increased linearly up to 26°C and then remained constant up to 35°C. Wind speeds above 25 m/s caused a linear decline in log catch rates. Log catch rates increased linearly as solar radiation increased and decreased linearly as relative humidity increased. Changes in catch rates with time of day were explained almost entirely by the four weather variables, i.e. there was no evidence that intrinsic behavioural changes with time of day affected catch rates. The combined effects of the four weather variables accounted for 47·1 % of the between-day variation in trap catches. Trap catches that have been standardised, i.e. adjusted to a ‘ standard’ set of weather conditions, provide relative measures of population size which differ from absolute measures by a constant (unknown) scaling factor.

Increasing rates of insecticide use against the coffee leaf miner Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Méneville) and field reports on insecticide resistance led to an investigation of the possible occurrence of resistance of this species to some of the oldest insecticides used against it in Brazil: chlorpyrifos, disulfoton, ethion and methyl parathion. Insect populations were collected from ten sites in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil and these populations were subjected to discriminating concentrations established from insecticide LC99s estimated for a susceptible standard population. Eight of the field-collected populations showed resistance to disulfoton, five showed resistance to ethion, four showed resistance to methyl parathion, and one showed resistance to chlorpyrifos. The frequency of resistant individuals in each population ranged from 10 to 93% for disulfoton, 53 to 75% for ethion, 23 to 76% for methyl parathion, and the frequency of resistant individuals in the chlorpyrifos resistant population was 35%. A higher frequency of individuals resistant to chlorpyrifos, disulfoton and ethion was associated with greater use of insecticides, especially other organophosphates. This finding suggests that cross-selection, mainly between organophosphates, played a major role in the evolution of insecticide resistance in Brazilian populations of L. coffeella. Results from insecticide bioassays with synergists (diethyl maleate, piperonyl butoxide and triphenyl phosphate) suggested that cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenases may play a major role in resistance with minor involvement of esterases and glutathione S-transferases.

After preliminary collections with suction traps at heights of 30 and 135 cm had shown that most mosquitoes were caught in the lower trap, suction trap catches were made for three years from about April to November in a wooded area in southern England. Flight periodicities of females of Aedes cantans (Mg.) and Ae. geniculatus (Ol.) and of both sexes of Anopheles plumbeus Steph. and Culex pipiens L. were determined by traps incorporating automatic segregating devices. In all species maximum flight activity was between 19.00–20.00 h GMT. The biting cycles of the first three species were similar to their general flight patterns. Mean hourly densities of all four species were calculated from the suction trap catches. Collections were made with traps placed at five different heights (23–223 cm) in 1968 and at eight heights (23–550 cm) in 1969 and 1970. In most species there was a well defined and rapid decline in aerial density of both sexes with increasing height, but more unfed females and males of Culex pipiens L. and females of Culiseta morsitans (Theo.) were caught in the highest trap. From about mid-August onwards, when adults of Culex pipiens were searching for hibernation sites, both males and females with fat reserves were commonest in the lowest trap. The slopes of the regression lines of log. density on log. height were calculated separately for Ae. cantans and C. pipiens, and for all adults combined for five less common species. In all catches, except those of C. pipiens, unfed females predominated.
