The present paper is the first of two dealing with the seasonal distribution, hourly variation in biting activity, and vertical distribution of certain Southern Nigerian mosquitos. The technique employed in the studies under discussion resembled that used by Haddow (1947) in Uganda. Human bait was used in both cases and the agreement between the results obtained in the two localities is felt to be such as fully to justify the employment of such methods. Over fifty species of mosquitos were taken in all and fourteen of these proved to be sufficiently abundant to yield significant figures. Four of these are discussed and the remainder will be dealt with in the second paper.

The most remarkable feature of the seasonal distribution was the very restricted period during which Anopheles gambiae was present in any abundance. This species occurred in large numbers only during the heavy rains of June and July and, to a less extent, in association with the small rains of September–October. During the dry season it almost disappeared. Aëedes africanus showed a similar distribution to that of gambiae but Taeniorhynchus africanus and Anopheles hargreavesi were most numerous during the dry season. It is suggested that in the area under consideration the latter species may well be a more important malaria vector than gambiae owing to its greater abundance and more uniform seasonal distribution.

An entomological radar was used to observe insect flight activity at a coastal locality in north-western Tasmania during the spring of 1973. Insects were regularly observed to take off at dusk, and local movements from nearby islands were detected on several occasions. Large-scale southward movements of insects across Bass Strait were also observed and were found to be associated with the warm anticyclonic airflows which occur ahead of a cold front. Light-trap catches indicated that the insects were noctuid moths, with Persectania ewingii (Westw.), Heliothis punctiger Wllgr. and Agrotis munda Wlk. dominant. The movements appear to have originated mainly in Victoria and south-eastern South Australia, but it is tentatively suggested that the ultimate source of the moths was in the region stretching westwards from north-western Victoria and south-western New South Wales towards the shores of the Spencer Gulf, South Australia.

Aphelinidae are all insect parasitoids, and most species are associated with nymphal stages of Homoptera: Sternorrhyncha, either as primary parasitoids or hyperparasitoids. The occurrence of egg parasitism in aphelinids has been recorded in eight of the 38 valid genera and these records are reviewed; it is particularly common in the genus Centrodora, which is shown to be the most polyphagous in the family. One species, C. darwini (Girault), is given special attention because of its occurrence in three recent surveys for biological control agents of crop pests. It is briefly redescribed, diagnosed, and shown to be the most polyphagous aphelinid known. A checklist of Australian Centrodora spp. is given, including the new combination Centrodora grotiusi (Girault) comb. n. The purported evidence for the classification of certain Encarsia spp. associated with eggs of Lepidoptera as ‘heterotrophic parasitoids’ is re-examined and dismissed.

The family Tephritidae (order: Diptera), commonly known as fruit flies, comprises a widely distributed group of agricultural pests. The tephritid pests infest multiple species of fruits and vegetables, resulting in huge crop losses. Here, we summarize the composition and diversity of tephritid gut-associated bacteria communities and host intrinsic and environmental factors that influence the microbiome structures. Diverse members of Enterobacteriaceae, most commonly Klebsiella and Enterobacter bacteria, are prevalent in fruit flies guts. Roles played by gut bacteria in host nutrition, development, physiology and resistance to insecticides and pathogens are also addressed. This review provides an overview of fruit fly microbiome structure and points to diverse roles that it can play in fly physiology and survival. It also considers potential use of this knowledge for the control of economically important fruit flies, including the sterile insect technique and cue-lure baiting.

DL-β-aminobutyric acid (BABA) is a non-protein amino acid that is an effective inducer of resistance against a variety of plant pathogens. However, examples of BABA-induced resistance against insect herbivores have not been reported. We applied BABA as a soil drench to legumes and monitored its effects on the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). On tic bean (Vicia faba var. minor), BABA increased aphid mortality, caused a reduction in the mean relative growth rate of individual insects and lessened the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm). BABA also caused significant reductions in the growth rate of A. pisum on pea (Pisum sativa), broad bean (Vicia faba var. major), runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa). No direct toxic effects of BABA against A. pisum were found, and no phytotoxic effects that may have caused a reduction in aphid performance were detected. Possible mechanisms behind this BABA-induced inhibition of aphid performance are discussed.

Various ketones and 1-octen-3-ol were used as odour attractants with biconical traps at Nguruman, south-western Kenya, to assess their effects on the catch size and composition of Glossina pallidipes Austen. Acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and 1-octen-3-ol were found to be effective in increasing catch size by up to 2–4×, but the two ketones differed in their dose-response curves. Acetone was more effective for males than females, as was 1-octen-3-ol. The age composition of samples from baited and unbaited traps differed only slightly. The level of variability between traps was reduced by the use of odour. Acetone with cow urine produced increases in catch of 9–25×, and significant differences were found between samples in sex ratio and age composition. The index of increase for cow urine plus acetone, when used with a biconical trap, was correlated with temperature changes during the day. This could only be partially accounted for by variability in dose rates. Cow urine with acetone is considered to be a potentially useful combination of baits for community participation tsetse control schemes.

In mixed cocoa-coconut palm plantations in Malaysia the palm spadices provide large, stable nesting sites for Dolichoderus thoracicus (Smith) in contrast to impermanent sites on cocoa and on the ground. D. thoracicus and the arboreal leaf-nesting Oecophylla smaragdina (Fabricius) both benefit from the mixed system which also provides a more stable food supply from honeydew-producing Homoptera. A scoring method showed that about 50–200 O. smaragdina or 200–2000 D. thoracicus on a cocoa tree can protect it effectively from Helopeltis theobromae Miller (Hemiptera: Miridae). The relatively greater efficiency of O. smaragdina as a biological control agent is associated with its actively dispersive predatory behaviour in contrast to the localized concentration of D. thoracicus workers at sites such as cocoa pods where it tends honeydew-producing Homoptera, and where it acts largely by deterring H. theobromae. Despite its biological control potential, the painfully biting O. smaragdina, unlike D. thoracicus, is normally considered unacceptable to plantation staff. Nevertheless it should be recognized as valuable in integrated pest management of cocoa pests especially where D. thoracicus is difficult to establish.

In breeding Glossina palpalis (R.-D.) in captivityin Northern Nigeria, it was found that even though the sexes are segregated within 24 hours of emergence, a few females succeed in producing larvae. Examination of the spermathecae of females thus segregated shows that nearly 4 per cent. are fertilised. This low fertilisation rate is due to the impotence of most males under 24 hours old. When young males of different ages were forced to compete with older males for the females' favours, it was found that young males must be 7 to 8 days old before their virility approaches that of older males.

When virile males are added to mating cages containing virgin females, pairing startsimmediately, but the number of pairs decreases steadily until after 23 hours, pairing has virtually ceased. The cessation of copulation is due to the female becoming unwilling to pair and to her ability to repulse the male; but if she is re-fed her willingness will be restored to a considerable extent. There is no need to leave the sexes together formore than 24 hours, as excellent fertilisation can be achieved in that time.

Silicon (Si) can improve resistance of plants to insect attack and may also enhance tolerance of water stress. This study tested if Si-mediated host plant resistance to insect attack was augmented by water stress. Four sugarcane cultivars, two resistant (N21, N33) and two susceptible (N26, N11) to Eldana saccharina Walker were grown in a pot trial in Si-deficient river sand, with (Si+) and without (Si−) calcium silicate. To induce water stress, irrigation to half the trial was reduced after 8.5 months. The trial was artificially infested with E. saccharina eggs after water reduction and harvested 66 days later. Silicon treated, stressed and non-stressed plants of the same cultivar did not differ appreciably in Si content. Decreases in numbers of borers recovered and stalk damage were not associated with comparable increases in rind hardness in Si+ cane, particularly in water-stressed susceptible cultivars. Overall, Si+ plants displayed increased resistance to E. saccharina attack compared with Si− plants. Borer recoveries were significantly lower in stressed Si+ cane compared with either stressed Si− or non-stressed Si− and Si+ cane. Generally, fewer borers were recovered from resistant cultivars than susceptible cultivars. Stalk damage was significantly lower in Si+ cane than in Si− cane, for N21, N11 and N26. Stalk damage was significantly less in Si+ combined susceptible cultivars than in Si− combined susceptible cultivars under non-stressed and especially stressed conditions. In general, the reduction in borer numbers and stalk damage in Si+ plants was greater for water-stressed cane than non-stressed cane, particularly for susceptible sugarcane cultivars. The hypothesis that Si affords greater protection against E. saccharina borer attack in water-stressed sugarcane than in non-stressed cane and that this benefit is greatly enhanced in susceptible cultivars is supported. A possible active role for soluble Si in defence against E. saccharina is proposed.

Insecticide resistance is frequently associated with fitness disadvantages in the absence of insecticides. However, intense past selection with insecticides may allow the evolution of fitness modifier alleles that mitigate the cost of insecticide resistance and their consequent fitness disadvantages. Populations of Sitophilus zeamais with different levels of susceptibility to insecticides show differences in the accumulation and mobilization of energy reserves. These differences may allow S. zeamais to better withstand toxic compounds without reducing the beetles' reproductive fitness. Enzymatic assays with carbohydrate- and lipid-metabolizing enzymes were, therefore, carried out to test this hypothesis. Activity levels of trehalase, glycogen phosphorylase, lipase, glycosidase and amylase were determined in two insecticide-resistant populations showing (resistant cost) or not showing (resistant no-cost) associated fitness cost, and in an insecticide-susceptible population. Respirometry bioassays were also carried out with these weevil populations. The resistant no-cost population showed significantly higher body mass and respiration rate than the other two populations, which were similar. No significant differences in glycogen phosphorylase and glycosidase were observed among the populations. Among the enzymes studied, trehalase and lipase showed higher activity in the resistant cost population. The results obtained in the assays with amylase also indicate significant differences in activity among the populations, but with higher activity in the resistant no-cost population. The inverse activity trends of lipases and amylases in both resistant populations, one showing fitness disadvantage without insecticide exposure and the other not showing it, may underlay the mitigation of insecticide resistance physiological costs observed in the resistant no-cost population. The higher amylase activity observed in the resistant no-cost population may favor energy storage, preventing potential trade-offs between insecticide resistance mechanisms and basic physiological processes in this population, unlike what seems to take place in the resistant cost population.

Entomopathogenic nematode species available in Europe were screened for their efficacy against both the root-feeding larvae and silk-feeding adults of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte. Laboratory screening tests were aimed at the selection of candidate biological control agents for the management of this invasive alien pest in Europe. Steinernema glaseri, S. arenarium, S. abassi, S. bicornutum, S. feltiae, S. kraussei, S. carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora were studied to determine their virulence against third instar larvae and adults of D. v. virgifera in small-volume arenas (using nematode concentrations of 0.5, 0.8, 7.9 and 15.9 infective juveniles cm–2). All nematode species were able to invade and propagate in D. v. virgifera larvae, but adults were rarely infected. At concentrations of 7.9 and 15.9 cm–2, S. glaseri, S. arenarium, S. abassi and H. bacteriophora caused the highest larval mortality of up to 77%. Steinernema bicornutum, S. abassi, S. carpocapsae and H. bacteriophora appeared to have a high propagation level, producing 5970±779, 5595±811, 5341±1177 and 4039±1025 infective juveniles per larva, respectively. Steinernema glaseri, S. arenarium, S. feltiae, S. kraussei and H. bacteriophora were further screened at a concentration of 16.7 nematodes cm–2 against third instar larvae in medium-volume arenas (sand-filled trays with maize plants). Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, S. arenarium and S. feltiae caused the highest larval mortality with 77±16.6%, 67±3.5%, and 57±17.1%, respectively. In a next step, criteria for rating the entomopathogenic nematode species were applied based on results obtained for virulence and propagation, and for current production costs and availability in Europe. These criteria were then rated to determine the potential of the nematodes for further field testing. Results showed the highest potential in H. bacteriophora, followed by S. arenarium and S. feltiae, for further testing as candidate biological control agents.

The mosquitos of two villages on the Kenya coast were studied over a period of two and a half years, which included years of very light, average and very heavy rainfall. A survey was made of the species occurring in the bush and in the houses, and in addition 24-hour biting catches were done and window-trap catches were examined to obtain information on the movement of species in and out of houses.

Sixty five species were taken in net catches in the bush but only 19 were taken regularly; five (Taeniorhynchus uniformis (Theo.) and T. africanus (Theo.), Aëdes woodi Edw., Culex invidiosus Theo. and C. guiarti Blanch.) were abundant. In the houses, two species, C. pipiens fatigans Wied. and Aë. aegypti occurred regularly, the former being abundant and the latter not uncommon. Anopheles gambiae Giles and A. funestus Giles were seasonal; A. funestus appeared only after exceptionally heavy rain. The in-going window trap attracted only an occasional mosquito seeking shelter during the day and only six species were taken. Thirty species were found in the out-going trap but only seven occurred regularly. A. gambiae, A. funestus, T. uniformis, T. africanus and C. p. fatigans were most active during the hours of darkness, with the main activity in the four hours before dawn. Aë. aegypti had two waves of activity, in the four-hour periods before dawn and before sunset, respectively; the sunset peak was higher and the main activity probably occurred between 18 and 19 hr., as previously recorded for this species in Mombasa.

Thirty five species were taken biting in the 24-hour catches in situations designated bush, house and compound, respectively. The biting cycles of A. gambiae, Aë. aegypti and C. p. fatigans have been compared in the three situations. The biting rhythm of each species was much the same in the different environments but the time and magnitude of the main peaks varied. In the case of Aë. aegypti, which probably includes two different forms, there is a marked difference in the magnitude of the evening peak in the bush and house. The biting cycles in the bush are given for A. squamosus Theo., T. uniformis, T. africanus, Aë. fryeri, Aë. metallicus (Edw.), Aë. albicosta (Edw.) and C. antennatus (Becker) and their occurrence in the other two situations is noted. The cycles of T. uniformis and Aë. fryeri agree with previous findings, but that of T. africanus differs from other cycles recorded for this species by having the main biting after midnight. The remaining species were rare, but one catch of 274 specimens of A. funestus was recorded.

Resting mosquitos were more numerous in the second half of the year from August to December, a period of light rainfall and high temperatures. Biting mosquitos were more commonly taken, especially in the bush, in the second quarter of the year, during the main rainy season. The biting activity of some species increased in the houses in the second half of the year, when there are high winds, and biting in the bush was minimal.

1. The original purpose of the present work was to confirm a previous finding that, in unfed adult Xenopsylla, longevity varies according to the humidity during the cocoon period, and to find whether this is due to differential loss of water during the prepupal period. The previous finding has been confirmed, but the cause is shown to lie in loss of water during the pupal and not the prepupal period.

2. Prepupae are shown to gain in weight by the absorption of water vapour from the air if kept at 24°C. and any relative humidity from 50–90 per cent. If kept below 45 per cent. R.H. they rapidly dry and fail to pupate.

3. During this period (about three and a half days from cocoon spinning to pupation at 24°C.) the dry weight decreases by about 2 per cent, of the original total weight, and the total weight increases by from 4–29 per cent., with a mean of 14 per cent.

4. The amount of water absorbed is independent of relative humidity within the range 50–90 per cent., and is approximately equal to the increase in total weight.

5. The critical relative humidity, below which the insects die and above which they absorb water, is shown to be substantially the same (from 45 to 50 per cent. R.H.) at 12°, 24° and 35°C.

6. After pupation the insects begin to lose water and continue to do so throughout the period. The rate of loss increases with decreasing humidity, though the effect of humidity is not very great.

7. Adults emerging from pupae kept at higher humidities weigh more, have higher percentage water contents, and live longer without food, than those emerging from pupae kept at lower humidities.

8. The results are discussed in the light of previous work, and suggestions as to the mechanism of the process of absorption of water are made.

During 1953 and 1954, experimental plots were set up on two sites in eastern England and regular fortnightly samples were taken in an attempt to evaluate the degree of control of the Cabbage Aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), exerted by its parasites and predators.

The plot at each site consisted of a block of 5 rows of 40 plants and each main sample consisted of a sample of three leaves (one upper, one middle and one lower leaf) from 25 per cent. of the plants. Two such samples (A & B) were taken at each visit and were so arranged that the plants were sampled in strict rotation. The leaves were taken back to the laboratory and sample A was used to assess the number of Aphids, the other for an assessment of parasitism. The Aphids were removed from sample A and put into 95 per cent. alcohol and counted. The mummies were removed from sample B and put into labelled tubes. The leaves from sample B were then kept in insect-proof containers and examined daily for the next fortnight. All mummies which formed were removed and sorted. The insects which emerged from the mummies were killed, sexed and recorded. Predators taken from this sample were identified and recorded and used for further experiments. The validity of counting Aphids from one sample and parasites and predators from another was investigated by a series of “check-samples” taken from arbitrary plots in the fields. A shorter method for assessing parasitism was tried, using a sub-sample of the main sample, and an explanation is given for the disparity between the two sets of results.

A strain of Aedes aegypti (L.) was collected in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, in 1987 and reared through to the F2 generation. The strain was shown to be heterozygous for resistance to a range of pyrethroids, but there was no evidence of organophosphate and carbamate resistance. Biochemical studies indicated that the pyrethroid resistance was not metabolically based. Electrophysiological studies at the neuromuscular junction of resistant insects indicated that a kdr (nerve insensitivity) type mechanism was operating in this strain. It is not known whether this mechanism was selected by earlier DDT exposure or by the recent ultra-low-volume applications of pyrethroids.

The functional response of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot to eggs of its prey, the spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch was examined on three plant species. Experiments were done to determine whether differences in the functional response on the three plant species were due to the morphological features of the crop directly on the predator or through an effect of the plant species on the prey. The results show that crop morphology is the only factor influencing the predatory ability of P. persimilis on the three plant species. Fewer eggs were eaten on Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. ‘Autumnal Blue’, the plant species with hairy leaves, and greater numbers of prey consumed on Choisya ternata, a species with smooth leaves. However, similarly few eggs were eaten on the smooth, but waxy leaved Euonymus japonicus as on Ceanothus thyrsiflorus, demonstrating that morphological characters of leaves other than the possession of hairs and trichomes may affect the rates of predation. The implications of these results for the tritrophic interactions between plant, predator and prey, and the development of suitable biological control strategies are discussed.

During the years 1995–1999 the life cycle category of 2797 clones of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) was examined. The clones originated from primary and secondary hosts from different localities of North and Central Greece and the island of Crete in the south. Four different overwintering life cycle strategies were found that have also been described for M. persicae and other heteroecious species previously. A geographical variation was found in the proportion of holocyclic clones from tobacco and other secondary hosts associated with the abundance of the primary host in the sampling regions. In Central Macedonia, around the main peach-growing regions, the proportion of holocyclic clones was mostly above 50% and in some cases reached 100%. In localities of East Macedonia, holocyclic clones were also frequent. On the other hand, further south or in north-eastern Greece, where peach is not common, the proportion of holocyclic clones varied between 0 and 33%. Fifty seven percent of examined anholocyclic clones produced males under short day conditions, suggesting that androcyclic clones in Greece represent an important factor of genetic variability. Intermediate clones were sampled from all host-plants but at low frequencies (3.6% of total examined clones and 6.9% of non-holocyclic ones). Moreover, a regional variation was found in different colour forms feeding on tobacco plants. Red clones were predominant in regions where aphids overwinter parthenogenetically on weeds or winter crops. However, almost all clones from the primary host were green. The ecological aspects of life cycle variation are discussed.

High levels (>1000-fold) of resistance to DDT, permethrin and deltamethrin were detected in Culex quinquefasciatus Say from Saudi Arabia. Biochemical enzyme and metabolic studies indicated that there is evidence for a metabolic basis to both the organochlorine and pyrethroid resistances. Electrophysiological studies indicated that there is no kdr-type mechanism conferring resistance to the pyrethroid lambda-cyhalothrin neurophysiologically, although there is evidence of cross-resistance between DDT and the pyrethroids by bioassays. There was a change in the oxidase system in both the DDT- and permethrin-selected strains and an increase in glutathione transferase activity in the DDT-selected line. Metabolic studies indicated that both oxidases and glutathione transferases are involved with DDT resistance as DDA and DDE were the predominant metabolites after a 5-h in-vitro incubation period. Permethrin resistance is likely to involve an increase in oxidative degradation, but further metabolic studies are needed to confirm this.

Samples of engorged outdoor-resting females of the complex of Anopheles punctulatus Dönitz, primarily A. farauti Laveran, were obtained from villages in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, in 1981–83 and their blood-meal sources identified. The proportion of the population feeding on man varied considerably from village to village according to the number of animals, particularly pigs, available as alternative hosts. Using a unique host in a mark–release–recapture experiment, the distance flown by engorged females of A. farauti was found to be generally less than 50 m. In one village, the gonotrophic age of a subsample of 1523 females of A. farauti was obtained and in 503 of these the electrophoretic pattern of the enzyme phosphoglucomutase (PGM) determined. Tests of association were per formed on the data. However, no significant relationship was found between host source, gonotrophic age and allelic type of PGM. Thus, separate subpopulations of A. farauti were not identified within this village. The relevance of the results to the epidemiology of malaria is discussed.

The developmental biology of Telenomus remus Nixon is described from rearings within the eggs of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.). It has two larval instars and its developmental duration at 25°C is about ten days. Superparasitism can be easily induced in the laboratory, but only one adult emerges from each host egg.
