Heyman makes a convincing case that a melioration choice strategy is sufficient to produce addictive behavior. But given a plethora of addiction theories, the question is whether melioration theory is superior to rivals more sophisticated than a simple disease model or operant conditioning account. Heyman offers little direct evidence that melioration actually causes the addictions we observe.

The guideline for therapy should be the improvement of the individual's functionality, not the acquisition of the ill-defined “goldstandard” of normal movement. However, Latash & Anson's suggestion that only primary causes of dysfunction should be treated is problematic for two reasons: First, the distinction between genuine and adaptive changes in motor performance is not always possible, and second, adaptive changes do not necessarily improve motor function, but may actually be detrimental to the system's performance.

Posner & Raichle illustrate how neuroimaging blends profitably with neuropsychology and electrophysiology to advance cognitive theory. Recognizing that there are limitations to each of these techniques, we nonetheless argue that their confluence has fundamentally changed the way cognitive psychologists think about problems of the mind.

Wilkins and Wakefield's hypothesis that language is fundamentally a cognitive rather than cominunicational adaptation is reasonable, but there are flaws in their anatomical and fossil evidence. Their analysis of reorganization also needs clarification. Finally, the origin of language ability must have occurred with australopithecine rather than habiline adaptations on entry into the novel hominid adaptive zone.
