Survival of Silurus glanis ovulated oocytes (ova) measured by the capacity of normal development i.e. percentage of normal and abnormal hatched larvae after in vivo and in vitro storage and exposure to sperm activating or immobilizing solutions and urine was studied. In the case of ovulated oocytes left in the ovaries, total hatching and abnormal hatched larvae (in % of hatching) were respectively 74 and 8.2% immediately after ovulation, 77 and 8.6% after 2 h, 54 and 18% after 4 h, and 38 and 50% after 6 h of storage. Four and 6 h stay of ovulated oocytes in ovaries resulted in a significant increase of abnormal hatched larvae (p < 0.01). For the ova stored in vitro, the capacity to undertake a full embryonic development after fertilization was not significantly changed either after 8.5 h at 19 °C or 3.5 h at 25 °C; there was no ova survival at all after 3.5 h storage at 8 °C, 12 h at 19 °C and 8.5 h at 25 °C. There was a significant increase of abnormal larvae after 3.5 h at 25 °C (74%, p < 0.001) and after 8.5 h at 19 °C (37%, p < 0.05). Exposure of non inseminated ova to water buffered to pH 7.0 (5 mM Tris-HCl) to sperm activating solution (17 or 41 mM NaCl, 5 mM Tris-HCl, pH 8.0) or to immobilizing solution (200 mM NaCl, 30 mM Tris-HCl, pH 7.0) resulted in a regular and rapid decrease of their capacity of development; this was 10% of normal hatched larvae within 4 min in water, and within 6-8 min in the NaCl solutions. A similar situation was observed after exposure to urine with a loss of embryonic development of 30% within 3 min. These results indicate that all steps of the whole procedure of gamete collection and artificial insemination should be carried out rapidly as soon as possible after ovulation.

Fin spine ageing is the most common technique used to estimate age and growth parameters of large pelagic billfishes from the families Istiophoridae and Xiphiidae. The most suitable methods for processing and interpreting these calcified structures for age estimation have not been clearly defined. Methodological differences between unvalidated ageing studies are of particular concern for highly migratory species because multiple researchers in different regions of the world may conduct age estimates on the same species or stock. This review provides a critical overview of the methods used in previous fin spine ageing studies on billfishes and provides recommendations towards the development of a standardized protocol for estimating the age of striped marlin, Kajikia audax and white marlin, Kajikia albida. Three on-going fin spine ageing studies from Australia, Hawaii, and Florida are used to illustrate some of the considerations and difficulties encountered when developing an ageing protocol for highly migratory fish species. Particular areas of concern that may influence age and growth estimates included differences in fin spine selection, sectioning methods, criteria for identifying and measuring annuli, distinguishing false annuli, validation procedures, identification of the first annulus, and methods used to replace annuli lost due to vascularization of the fin spine core.

Paddlefish are endemic to most rivers and tributaries of the Mississippi basin and are found in 22 states of the United States. In 1989, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) listed paddlefish as a category 2 species because data were lacking on its population status. In 1992, USFWS added paddlefish to the list of Appendix II of the Convention on International trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) primarily due to concerns about illegal poaching in the international caviar trade. Therefore, paddlefish aquaculture will provide alternative fish sources for the marketplace in the era of strict federal and state regulations on wild populations. Aquaculture of paddlefish is in a research and developmental phase. Most broodstock are obtained from wild sources, though some mature fish have been developed in captivity. Artificial propagation techniques are resulting in > 80 % egg fertility. Larval paddlefish are initially raised in organically fertilized, zooplankton-rich (i.e. Daphnia sp.) ponds, and then trained on extruded trout/salmon diets until the juvenile fish are > 30 cm in total length. Tank culture is also an alternative for raising juvenile fish. Juvenile paddlefish, a filter feeder that requires zooplankton as its primary food, are being grown in reservoirs and in polyculture with channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri and Alabama. Production yields are 200–400 kg·ha–1 in polyculture and in reservoirs ranching resulted in 55–175 kg·ha–1. Reservoir ranching is ideal for caviar production; whereas, paddlefish (1.5 to 4.0 kg) cultured with catfish is for meat production. A system to produce all-female progeny through artificial propagation with sex-inverted, gynogenetic broodstock and attempting to develop optimal cryopreservation techniques for the milt of these unique broodstock is currently being tested. Value-added products such as hot and cold smoked paddlefish are the major effort being developed for the marketplace. Consumer acceptability of value-added products from paddlefish has been better than channel catfish.

This paper concerns eggs of captive fish and gonads of wild fish, from the Brittany coast obtained in the 7-18 °C thermal range. The diameters of eggs, 1.07-1.32 mm are compared to those observed in other areas, especially along the Mediterranean coast. The duration of embryogenesis as a function of temperature and the efficiency of different incubators are discussed. The quality of eggs in relation with larval survival is discussed through the biochemical composition of the eggs collected in captivity compared to that of wild fish gonads. The absolute values of lipids, proteins, fatty acids, lipid classes, phosphatides and minerals measured, also the positive relations obtained between egg dry weight, diameters, mortality during incubation are presented as criteria of egg quality.

We investigated the impact of an invasive species, Crepidula fornicataon the hydrodynamics and transport properties of the benthic boundary layer. We present results obtainedby three different approaches: 1) in-situ measurements of near-bottom current and suspended sediment concentration on two sites in the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France), 2) velocity measurements in controlled laboratory experiments of flows over a bed of artificial Crepidula shells, and 3) numerical simulations of the flow over two-dimensional shell-like bed forms.Numerical and laboratory experiments showed that both the bed erosion and the exchange velocitybetween the canopy and the outer flow decrease as the roughness density increases. These results suggest a sheltering effect by the Crepidula shells increasing with the surface density of shells. This trend was also found in field measurements: during spring tides, higher particle resuspension was observed on the muddy sand bottom with few chains of slipper limpets compared with the high-density area. However, other processes may explain these data; their importance is thus discussed in this study.

The effect of electrical stimulation on the quality of P. setiferus sperm cells was studied during the regeneration of the spermatophore. The proportion of the animals that responded to electroejaculation was quantified and the number of live, abnormal and dead cells, as well as the relationship between the number of cells and body weight, were taken into consideration as indicators of the effect of manipulation during stimulation. It was found that electrical stimulation caused some degree of spermatophore expulsion in 78% of the cases. Total expulsion of the spermatophores occurred in only 8.3% of the cases. A logistic curve was adjusted to the relationship between the number of sperm cells and the weight of the shrimp. After regeneration no curve was adjusted to the relationship. Eighty per cent of the stimulated shrimp regenerated the spermatophore in a maximum of 168 h. Fifty per cent regeneration was obtained in 96 h after stimulation. A decrease in the number of live cells from 26.8 to 7.6 million and an increase in abnormal (from 0.02 to 3.92 million) and dead (from no cells dead to 4.6 million) respectively, were registered for regenerated animals. Necrotic areas in 60% of the ampulae of regenerated shrimps were also observed. Bacteria associated with the necrotic ampulae was observed when counting sperm. As the spermatophore of this species is complex, it is necessary to search for a way to reduce the stress produced by the handling of the ampulae so as to avoid altering the reproductive capacity of the shrimp.

Monitoring the abundance of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) is necessary to assess population trends and risks of collapse. This note presents a study aimed at comparing three techniques for the direct estimation of green turtle numbers in their foraging habitats (seagrass beds and reef flats). The experiment was carried out at Mayotte Island, Western Indian Ocean. The techniques involved were surveys by snorkel, and aerial surveys using a microlight aircraft and a paramotor. Each technique had shortcomings and advantages. While each technique provided estimations of turtle numbers only surveys by snorkel permitted identification of species and sex, whenever visibility and turtle behaviour permitted. Along the shorelines, and over foraging areas, the paramotor was found to be most suitable for direct estimations of turtle numbers. The major advantage of this technique lied in its capability to obtain a synoptic snapshot of turtle distribution over foraging areas. Linear surveys from a microlight aircraft are better suited to monitor foraging areas located further away from the shore.

To understand the mechanisms that influence recruitment of the commercially important chokka squid Loligo vulgaris reynaudii, knowledge of its early life history is required. This paper evaluates the influence of food supply on yolk utilization, metabolism and growth of paralarvae. Eggs collected on the spawning grounds were incubated and the paralarvae reared in the laboratory under “fed” and “starved” conditions for 22 d at 16 ± 1 °C. Some paralarvae lasted 42 d in the laboratory. Mantle length (ML), wet and dry weights (WW and DW) and yolk weight (YW) were measured daily from samples of ~30 (10−51) paralarvae from each group. Yolk weight was estimated using image analysis to determined yolk volume. Three methods (growth model, O2 consumption rates and yolk utilization rates) were used to estimate metabolic rates. Input parameters included daily mean wet weight of paralarvae and temperature. Mean ML, WW, DW and YW at hatching were found to be 2.3 mm, 1.86 mg, 0.45 mg and 0.21 mg, respectively. The experiment revealed that daily yolk utilization rates were 86 and 95% d−1 for fed and starved paralarvae respectively, and that the yolk reserve was almost exhausted 3−4 d after hatching. Starved paralarvae survived for 6 days (with 80% mortality), while fed paralarvae attained a growth rate of 7.8% body WW d−1 over the first 22 days after hatching. Results illustrate that temperatures on the chokka squid spawning grounds allow paralarvae to grow at the fastest rates possible without being subjected to a growth “slow down” caused by a high temperature dependent imbalance between sustaining high metabolic and commitment high feeding rates.

This article describes tracking experiments conducted on eleven yellowfin tuna using ultrasonic transmitters in French Polynesia between 1985 and 1997. Nine fish were caught near Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) while the other two were tracked in coastal areas without FADs. The fish showed different patterns of horizontal movements: tight associations with FADs lasting several days, foraging movements confirmed by simultaneous acoustic observations of prey-sized fauna, movements parallel to the shore, and traveling between FADs. This intra- and inter-individual variety of behaviour might depend on the local environment (prey), and on individual biological differences. The influence of FADs, coastlines, and prey on tuna movements is discussed. The lack of information about the surrounding environment, the internal state of the fish and the recent history of the fish usually prevent scientists from adequately interpreting the observed movements. Ideas for future research to studying tuna behaviour near FADs are discussed.

Larvae of the African River Prawn Macrobrachium vollenhovenii, indigenous to West Africa, were reared at various salinities (0-32‰). A salinity range of 16-24‰ was found most suitable with highest survival and growth, and lowest number and duration of instars. Freshwater was lethal already to zoea I - larvae. A mass culture experiment demonstrated the aquaculture potential of this Macrobrachium species. Larval rearing to postlarvae was possible applying the same methods as for M. rosenbergii. Detailed descriptions of rearing techniques are provided.

A fyke net survey of the juvenile and small fish assemblage of the Gambia estuary was conducted on three sampling occasions during the maximum recruitment season, from May to November 2002. This is the first detailed description of that particular component of the fish community in the Gambia estuary. The overall fyke net fish assemblage comprised 51 species, with a majority of young individuals of large and medium size species and the adults of small species. This assemblage is defined as the “small fish component of the mangrove channels”. The assemblage is dominated by true estuarine and certain marine species, all able to complete their life cycle within the estuary. The sea spawning species whose juveniles use the estuary mainly as a nursery ground, are not very diverse or abundant during the recruitment season. They are limited to the lowest part of the estuary due to the low salinity prevailing in the middle and upper reaches during the rainy season. This suggests that extreme seasonal variability (river flooding) in certain West African tropical estuaries at the time of maximum recruitment by certain marine species may reduce the nursery ground value for these taxa.

Temperature is the major abiotic factor controlling the rate of morphogenesis in fish. The present work investigated hatching time and the transition from endogenous to exogenous feeding at five constant temperatures over the range 15-35 °C. Clarias gariepinus eggs can be successfully hatched in ambient water temperatures between 20 and 35 °C, although at 30 °C the hatching rate is significantly improved. At 15 °C embryos do not survive. The period of hatching is inversely related to temperature such that synchronous hatching is encouraged by high temperature within the specific temperature range. The extent to which development rate and metabolic rate in C. gariepinus are accelerated by temperature is not the same. The duration between first feeding, yolksac absorption and the point-of-no-retum is inversely related to temperature. The same threshold temperature, below which development is theoretically arrested, can be estimated for C. gariepinus from the linear relationship between development rate and temperature up to hatching, first feeding and yolksac absorption. This closely approximates the lower lethal temperature of 15 °C estimated directly from embryo survival. The effect of temperature can be usefully modelled in C. gariepinus using the linear relationship V = a + bt to estimate t0 (threshold temperature) and Deff0 (effective day-degrees) and the hyperbolic relationship τ = Deff0/(t – t0) to determine development time. From the present work, t0 is 14.5 °C and Deff0 is 13, 26.3 and 35.7 for hatching, first feeding and yolksac absorption respectively for C. gariepinus. Unlike day-degrees, effective day-degrees remain independent of temperature over the range 20-35 °C. An approximate guide to development time at different constant temperatures within this range is given.

Triploid hybrids between female rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and male arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), together with triploid and diploid rainbow trout controls from the same dams, were tested in freshwater farming from fry stage up to the age of 3 years. When farming was operated in cold water, the survival rate of the hybrids was as good as those of the diploid and triploid rainbow trout. Hybrid growth was noticeably hindered relative to that of diploid controls at the beginning of the juvenile period, but this was partly tempered later on by the effect of diploid sexual maturation; at 3 years of age, the hybrid weighed 20% less than the diploid rainbow trout and did not differentiate significantly from the triploid rainbow trout. The impairment of sexual maturation was very much the same in the hybrid as in the triploid rainbow trout, and dressing traits were therefore quite similar, despite a slight difference in perivisceral fat losses of immature individuals, to the advantage of the hybrid. These results allow one to consider the suitability of this hybrid for large-sized fish production in cold water farming.

Age and growth of the brown meagre Sciaena umbra (Sciaenidae) collected (n = 532) in the north-western Adriatic Sea was studied by means of transverse otolith sections. The maximum age estimated was 19 and 16 years for males and females, respectively. The length at age estimated for each sex indicated that females attain a larger size and grow slightly faster than males. Both marginal increment analysis and edge analysis confirmed that annuli are formed once a year, with opaque zones laid down in summer (June-July). Age readings were very precise, with a percentage agreement of 98% between readers and low values of the index of average percent error (0.9%) and coefficient of variation (1.3%). Von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to age-length data, and growth parameters were estimated for males (L ∞ = 44.9 cm; k = 0.27,t 0 = −2.17 years) and females (L ∞ = 47.2 cm; k = 0.28, t 0 = -1.82 years). In both sexes of brown meagre, growth rate was high until they attain 2–3 years of age, i.e. at sexual maturity. Most of catches were obtained in late summer-early autumn. On the basis of present data, the sampled population of brown meagre mostly consisted of small fish younger than three years of age (about 90%). In addition, landings of this species in recent years largely decreased. As reported elsewhere in north-western Mediterranean, brown meagre stock in the Adriatic Sea showed clear signs of depletion, thus specific management measures for this species are urgently required.

This study was undertaken in a pond used for natural spawning of pike. Zooplankton and pike larvaewere sampled using a horizontal haul net (120 μm or 1 mm mesh size) through the aquatic vegetation. Among the different class sizes of larvae, one cohort was isolated (11.1 mm < L < 46 mm), in which larval pike first fed on small Cyclopoids then switched to Cladocerans until they fed on insect larvae. Length (1.2 mm/day) and weight growth were found to be fast. Between day 8 and day 13 of exogenous feeding there was a marked decrease of reserve lipids of larvae. This decrease coincided with a lower growth and seemed to be ascribable to changes from Cyclopoid (60.4% of ingested prey) to 2 species of Cladoceran (42.4% and 36.4% of ingested prey), in the feeding sequence of larvae. Pike probably found difficulties in capturing Cyclopoid and digesting Cladocerans as their alimentary canal was not completely developed. After day 13, Cladoceran digestibility was good as the S-bend gut was formed, when triacylglycerol content of larvae increased until the experiment ceased. As indicators, of good growth, we detected increasing amounts of phospholipids throughout the whole study. The fatty acid composition of larval triacylglycerolsappeared to be very similar to the composition of zooplankton lipids. Dietary fatty acids could havebeen incorporated whithout modification into triacylglycerols and into phospholipids possibly with limited elongation/desaturation. The results suggest that pike larvae require both (n-3) FA and (n-6) FA.

A fuzzy logic model of tuna behaviour near Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) was developed to reproduce individual differences in horizontal movements observed from ultrasonic telemetry experiments. In this model, the behaviour of an individual is based on its surrounding environment (FADs and prey) and on its internal state (stomach fullness), which depends on its recent past actions. Internal sensors are used to determine the motivation of the fish, combined with external sensors, this determines its movements. Sensory information and motivation are modeled using fuzzy sets. A FAD attracts an individual when it is located within the FAD’s range of influence. The time spent near a FAD depends on the feeding motivation of the fish and on its surrounding environment. If the fish is not hungry, it stays near the FAD. Otherwise, the fish has to forage in order to eat, and might therefore leave the FAD if no prey is available in its vicinity. By varying the environmental conditions near FADs, the model reproduces the different horizontal movement patterns observed for tunas. The model is then extended to allow multiple individuals to co-exist, each individual modeled through the above behavioural model, without any direct or indirect interactions between them. This way, we study the effects of individual behaviour on tuna aggregation near FADs. We find that the model predicts the temporal dynamics of aggregation around FADs exhibited by tunas. By examining the effects of several FAD network models on the aggregation, we also estimate optimal spatial arrangements of FADs.

Fisheries management now extends from the stock to the ecosystem. The foundation for fisheries management on an ecosystem basis must lie in appropriate modelling of the ecosystems. A prerequisite for such models requires data on the two interactive components of the ecosystem: the biotope (physical environment), and the community of living species. In this context, acoustics become essential, as this tool can provide qualitative and quantitative data on various communities of species, and furthermore allows the seldom-attainable study of their interactions. In fact, acoustics allow the monitoring of entire communities, from plankton to large predators, as well as certain aspects of the physical environment, such as substratum characteristics. Acoustics have been used during the last two decades mainly to provide fishery-independent estimates of stocks. The intention of this paper is to promote the use of acoustics for studying marine ecosystems and to encourage the emergence of new generations of ecosystem models. As an example of integrative research based on acoustic data, we will present the approach and the results of a scientific programme (ECOTAP) carried out to study the tuna pelagic ecosystem in French Polynesia. We then discuss the use of acoustics as a tool for ecosystem-based studies and management.

An analysis of statistical data available in eight glass eel fisheries distnbuted over the French Atlantic coastline is used to define the upstream migration dynamics of Anguilla anguilla in estuaries. The CPUE (Catch Per Unit of Effort) data reveal three different types of seasonal trends that reflect different migration kinetics. The recruitment abundance is studied compared to the salinity of the estuary. The first two types of trends correspond to years of high recruitment andor of reduced fishing effort. In brackish estuarine zones, the abundances then follow a symmetrical curve, with a peak in JanuaryFebruary. This time course is due to the passage of a wave of migrants. Further upstream, in tidal freshwater zones, the abundances follow an asymmetrical curve which may describe the progressive accumulation of eels between November and March/April. When recruitment is low andlor the fishing effort is high, CPUEs vary during the season following a plateau curve, with values staying more or less constant between November and March. This latter trend represents a balance status between immigration and capture. In this case, abundance indicescan only be established with total catches. The curves are explained by the migration behaviour of glass eel which exhibit a resting phase in brackish zones and an accumulation in tidal oligohaline zones. These results have direct consequences particularly for the determination of recruitment abundance indices.

Results are presented from laboratory-based experiments in which we investigated short-term responses of Mytilus edulis L. to experimental changes in the amount and composition of suspended seston. Working with large quantities of cultured algae, we have studied feeding behaviour over ranges of food availability and quality that extend well beyond earlier limits. Findings confirm the ability of mussels to selectively reject inorganic particles as pseudofaeces prior to ingestion, thereby enriching the organic content of ingested matter by 30% more than the organic content of natural filtered seston. Our findings also establish acclimation both of selective and absorptive processes, indicating that the extent to which growth of M. edulis can be stimulated in the short-term will depend upon prior nutritional history. Present maximal growth of 14.8% dry soft tissue d−1 in a standard M. edulis of 1 g dry soft tissue was much higher than has previously been documented for any adult mussel. Maximal growth was achieved when natural seston that had been enriched to more than about 60% organic content with a mixture of algal monocultures was available at concentrations above about 11.5 mg total particulates 1−1. Neither ingestion rate nor net energy balance were improved with further increases in food availability, associated with regulatory reductions in the rate of water filtration (clearance rate) that maintained organic ingestion rate independent of increases in both the amount and organic content of available seston. These findings suggest that digestive processes had become saturated when organic ingestion reached about 6.5 mg organics g−1 dry soft tissue h−1 in a standard M. edulis of 1 g dry soft tissue, representing as much as 20.6% of all soft tissue organic mass mussel−1 d−1. Such saturation of organic ingestion is consistent with previous conclusions based on comparative allometries showing that limitations to growth in M. edulis and other bivalves are associated with the rate of food processing.

The population abundance estimates used in stock assessments or required to establish management measures, depend on the sampling of the entire demographic spectrum of a population resident in a given area. However, for sea turtles, most population estimates are based mainly on nesting beach survey data and only consider a fraction of the population. The Southwest Atlantic Ocean (SWA) is an important foraging and development area for juveniles of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta where reproductive stocks from various nesting beaches mix. Declines in C. caretta populations have been observed in many parts of the world and bycatch rates of this species in the SWA are among the highest worldwide. This study standardizes the catch rates of loggerheads caught by pelagic longline fisheries in the region, using data collected by observer programs from Brazil and Uruguay. Generalized linear models (GLM) with a delta lognormal approximation were used. The variables used in the model take into account spatial and temporal variations as well as the characteristics of the fleet. In total, 6 272 344 hooks were observed between 1998 and 2007, with minimum effort registered in 2000 (12 010 hooks) and maximum effort in 2005 (1 989 431 hooks). During this period 3778 loggerheads were incidentally captured. The catch rates of loggerheads by the Uruguayan and Brazilian pelagic longline fisheries show oscillations through the years without a clear tendency; however, a low negative trend was observed from 1998 to 2005 with an increase in the last two years (2006 and 2007). The capture per unit of effort (CPUE) values varied between 0.38 to 1.78 ind/1000 hooks in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Distinct zones with differential catch rates were identified, with the higher CPUE values over the continental slope of Uruguay and adjacent waters. The incidental catch rates of this species are influenced, not only by fishing area, but also by year, season, sea surface temperature and gear type. In consequence, these variables and other potential ones should be considered in bycatch estimates by different fisheries because the loggerhead sea turtles are not uniformly distributed. This study intends to contribute not only to the general knowledge of loggerhead sea turtles in the SWA but to a future assessment of their populations at a global scale.
