A statistical approach is proposed to utilize the information contained both in scientific surveys and commercial fishing logbooks, in order to determine spatial and temporal distributions of recruiting and spawning fish of exploited populations. The approach is based on multivariate descriptive methods including ordination methods and classification techniques. A typology involving a principal component analysis (PCA), followed by a hierarchical ascending classification (HAC), is applied to both scientific and commercial data. PCA that accounts for spatial and temporal contiguities were performed. These analyses allow to compare structures observed at global and local scales, with those observed without focusing on a particular scale. The method is applied to the whiting population in the Celtic Sea. The analyses performed on both scientific and commercial CPUE show that most age groups are found north of 50°N. The analysis of commercial CPUE indicates four periods in the year associated with particular areas. High abundances of adults (age >2 years) are observed during spawning season (January–April) in inshore areas (south of Ireland and off Cornwall). Intermediate abundances of adults are observed in the same area in May and June. Between July and September, all age groups are observed in the Smalls area, where particularly high abundance of recruiting group 1 are found. During the last quarter, the distribution of adults is more widespread, mainly ranging between 51°N and 52°N.

Sex ratios in farmed European sea bass are highly biased towards males (75 to 95%), which is problematic for aquaculture. In this mini-review, we re-analyse fisheries literature data about sex ratios in wild sea bass from 13 population samples, representing altogether 4889 individuals covering the major part of the distribution range of the species. We find that as a whole, the sex ratio of wild populations is biased towards females (59.4% females, p < 0.001), but that the sex ratio of the younger fish (<30 cm total length) is balanced (52.0% females, p = 0.15), while the sex ratio of the older fish is heavily biased towards females (69.5% females, p < 0.01). Possible causes of these differences (differential longevity, biased sampling) are discussed. When age-group sex ratios are available (three population samples out of 13), significant variation between age groups appears, part of which is most likely of environmental origin. This study shows that the excess of males in culture is not a characteristic of the species, but rather a consequence of the environments used in culture, interacting with a complex system where both environmental and genetic influences govern sex determination in sea bass.

Wobbegongs are benthic sharks that are commercially targeted in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Given a dramatic reduction of more than 50% in landed catch in a decade, there is a clear need to ensure that basic ecological data such as distribution and abundance are available for management use. Opportunistic sightings of wobbegongs collected by recreational scuba-divers were used to assess the distribution and relative abundance of wobbegongs in NSW. From July 2003 until January 2005, 304 dives were undertaken by recreational divers and 454 wobbegongs were reported. Larger numbers of wobbegongs were sighted in northern compared to southern NSW. Spotted and ornate wobbegongs were sighted in similar numbers, but species composition was highly variable across locations. Only a few juvenile and newborn spotted wobbegongs were sighted, whereas small ornate wobbegongs were mostly sighted north of central NSW. The latter were possibly the third, cryptic species, the dwarf ornate wobbegong. The paucity of sightings of small wobbegongs suggests that juveniles and newborns are inconspicuous to divers or that small wobbegongs are found in areas not visited by divers. Potential species and size segregation suggest that closing areas to fishing may enable populations to sustain current levels of commercial exploitation. The cost-effectiveness of using recreational scuba-divers to opportunistically collect distribution and relative abundance data was apparent from this study. However, the lack of spatial and temporal homogeneity in diving effort suggests that future studies should consider incorporating organized surveys and a facilitator, rather than using opportunistic records of sightings.

In confined environments, the precocious reproductive efficiency of "tilapias" (various cichlid species belonging to the genera Oreochromis, Sarotherodon and Tilapia) can rapidly lead to overcrowding and nanism. Therefore, the artificial control of reproduction in these species is very important for success in their culture. Such a control may consist either in completely preventing fry production in a population, in order to improve growth, or in favouring synchronous massive productions of alevins, in order to set up cultures with homogeneous populations.

At present, some of the most intensive techniques are based on the separate rearing of male fish, either after manual sorting or following hormonal inversion treatments leading to monosex populations. New ways of obtaining a male monosex progeny are suggested, based on the viability and fertility of a new genotype YY. Recent data on the sex differentiation of tilapia gonad suggest the possible use of steroids which have been identified in vitro during the early stages of development of the testis and which exhibit high masculinizing potentialities; these studies also suggest the tentative use of specific inhibitors of the activity of some of the enzymes involved in the synthesis of the above mentioned steroids.

The occurrence of parental care is an important factor in the reproductive efficiency of tilapias. Recent data show close relationships between the chronology of the mouth-brooding behaviour in Oreochromis, and that of the ovarian cycle. A better knowledge of the underlying physiological factors may facilitate the development of new techniques for the inhibition and/or the synchronization of reproduction.

The petroleum spilt by the tanker “Erika” contained environmentally high concentrations of nickel (45 mg kg−1) and vanadium (83 mg kg−1). Our aim was to show that nickel and vanadium concentrations in marine organisms could be used as tracers of their exposure to oil deposits along the coast. Two biomarkers were determined, condition index (CI) and metallothionein levels.Samples were collected monthly from January to May 2000 from five sites along the coast of Vendée and Loire Atlantique: (1) Lérat, (2) La Govelle, (3) Saint Gildas, (4) La Bernerie and (5) La Fosse. Among benthic invertebrates, mussels Mytilus edulis (filter-feeders), periwinkles Littorina littorea (grazing-feeders) and dogwhelks Nucella lapillus (carnivora, bivalve predators) were selected. In addition, mussels were collected from a control site, Fier d'Ars (Ré Island). The species chosen as bioindicators have responded to the presence of oil in their environment by accumulating nickel and vanadium. The bioaccumulation of vanadium occurred early one month after oil spill whereas nickel bioaccumulation was deferred, probably as a consequence of a lower stability of vanadylporphyrins compared to nickelporphyrins which are known in particular for their role in stabilizing emulsions (film at the water/oil interface). Interspecific differences may be explained by different food habits: periwinkles grazed contaminated algae; mussels as filter-feeders retained particles and colloids from the water column; dogwhelks fed on mussels. Spatio-temporal changes of nickel and vanadium concentrations may result from (i) the arrival of new oil slicks, (ii) the action of cleaning of the coasts contributing to the re-suspension of petroleum. In all of the three species, few changes of the CI were observed from site to site. CI variations were linked to sexual ripening in mussels. Mussels originating from the control site showed MT concentrations significantly lower than those in specimens from impacted sites. The highest MT concentrations were observed in January and February, and then a consistent decrease was registered in March and May. MT concentrations in periwinkles increased very significantly in March and May. An increase in MT concentrations was also shown at this period in dogwhelks. Depending on the species, positive correlations were shown between MT and nickel and/or vanadium concentrations.

Killer whale (Orcinus orca) encounters from commercial pelagic trawlers as well as other types of vessels have been documented in several regions of the northeast Atlantic; however, very little published information is available regarding such encounters in mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and herring (Clupea harengus) fisheries, in the waters between northern Scotland and Norway. Mackerel and herring are the two main fish species targeted by the Scottish pelagic fleet, primarily during October to March and June to September, respectively. Encounters with killer whales were recorded during January and February 2006 by observers on a pelagic trawler fishing for mackerel in this area. These recent data, along with historical records collected since 2000, demonstrate the existence of frequent encounters between commercial pelagic trawlers and killer whales. We describe the foraging behaviour displayed by the whales during fishing operations. Killer whales approached the vessels during retrieval of the net, and remained there until this was completed. They were sometimes sighted during steaming and towing, although there was no observed contact with the boat or net at these times. There is no evidence that the presence of killer whales reduced the amount of fish caught by the trawlers or that killer whales ever become entangled in the nets. We suggest that, during the mackerel fishing season, the whales may obtain a significant proportion of their daily energy requirements from this source.

Large uncertainties in catch data (officially-reported landings and discards) are undermining the ability of scientific organisations to provide valid management advice based on the conventional approach of analytical stock assessments. There is thus an urgent need to consider alternative tools that do not depend on long series of precise age-structured catch data. This paper presents four fishery-independent assessment models developed under the EU project FISBOAT (Fishery Independent Survey Based Operational Assessment Tools). It also reports on rudimentary tests based on simulated data, using the same data sets and protocol as an evaluation study conducted by the US National Research Council in 1997. The survey-based assessment models at hand are able to reliably capture the major signal in biomass and recruitment, although they smooth out transient changes. However, they cannot provide absolute abundance estimates, only relative values on an arbitrary scale. The survey-based approaches could provide more rapid updates of the state of stocks than catch-based methods.

The amphidromous life cycle and morphological characteristics of Sicydiinae species allowthem to colonise tropical freshwater habitats from the river mouth to the upper reaches ofthe river basin. Otolith microchemistry of 62 Sicydium punctatum from thePérou River, Guadeloupe (French West Indies) was investigated with a femtosecond laserablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (fs-LA-ICP-MS) in order toreconstruct individual life history and follow the possible movements of Sicydiumpunctatum after the recruitment. Sr:Ca fingerprint confirmed the amphidromouscycle of this species. Variations of Ba:Ca in some individuals indicated changes inenvironmental conditions after the recruitment in the river. Even if results did not allowconcluding to the specific origin of these variations, the hydrological regime and thebiofilm composition may have a non negligible influence on the Ba availability. Resultssupported the use of multi-elemental signatures in otoliths and highlight the need for alarge geographical and temporal sampling of Ba and Sr in freshwater systems for a betterunderstanding of amphidromous fish species.

Les deux espèces de sardinelles (Surdinella aurita et Sardinella maderensis) sont présentes dans les trois régions d'upwelling de l'Ouest africain (zones sénégalo-mauritanienne, ivoiro-ghanéenne et congoangolaise). La compétition entre ces deux espèces, présentant une grande similitude de forme, à l'activité et aux régimes alimentaires très proches et occupant les mêmes zones géographiques sembleeffective. Cependant les stratégies d'occupation et d'exploitation du milieu, de croissance et de reproduction sont, pour ces deux espèces, intimement liées à la dynamique des upwellings mais elles divergent en de nombreux points. Une complémentarité spatio-temporelle semble donc exister entre la dynamique de ces deux espèces dont les stratégies démographiques diffèrent. Sardinella aurita présente une plasticité et une adaptabilité remarquable aux fluctuations du milieu dont elle tire parti.En cela, elle semble être plus sensible aux variations climatiques que Sardinella maderensis, espèce tolérant de fortes perturbations de I'environnement. Sardinella aurita possède une stratégie adaptative plus souple liée à une grande plasticité démographique. Cela lui permet une meilleure utilisation d'unaccroissement d'enrichissement temporaire du milieu, mais en retour la population subit le contrecoup de façon plus drastique lorsque les conditions deviennent défavorables.

Même si la compétition entre deux espèces de poissons pélagiques peut souvent paraître effective en écologie marine, rares sont les exemples où elle peut être mise en évidence au niveau de l'abondance respective des stocks. Les mécanismes de la compétition pour des espèces spécialisées comme lespélagiques doivent être précisés au niveau de certains paramètres du cycle vital de l'espèce. L'analyse comparée des stratégies démographiques permet de mieux comprendre la nature différente de la dynamique des stocks, notamment l'organisation du partage de ressources communes. La nécessité de gérer les stocks en considérant la stratégie de vie des espèces qui les composent est soulignée.

Vibrio harveyi is the main pathogen of the European abaloneHaliotis tuberculata, and recently caused important mortalities at theproduction sites of this marine gastropod in France. In the present work, the monthlyantibacterial activity of two red seaweed species from the French Atlantic coast, thenative Palmaria palmata and the introduced Grateloupiaturuturu, were investigated against the abalone pathogen Vibrio harveyistrain ORM4. Water-soluble extracts were screened using the microplate method.Grateloupia turuturu showed an antibacterial activity with a maximalgrowth inhibition in spring of around 16%. In contrast, Palmaria palmatawas inactive, as further growth of the bacteria was observed. Preliminaryone-dimensional proton nuclear magnetic-resonance (1H NMR) profiles identified thedifferences between the two water-soluble extracts.

Among benthic organisms, bivalves are often used as bioindicators of environmental pollution because of their high bioaccumulation capacities for heavy metals leading to metallothioneins (MT) induction. MT are small cytosolic metal-binding proteins involved in metal homeostasis and detoxification in living organisms. These proteins can also be induced by a wide range of factors, such as hormones, physical stress, parasitism. MT quantification in relation to parasitism is rarely reported in literature, while parasites are omnipresent and have deleterious impacts on bivalves. Moreover, only a few number of MT genes have been characterized in molluscs. This study describes the partial sequence of the MT gene (Cemt1) in the edible cockle Cerastoderma edule. The cockle's MT cDNA was sequenced and showed over 80% homology to several other bivalve MT sequences. This sequence was then used to determine MT specific primers which can be used in quantitative real time PCR. MT protein and gene expression levels were quantified for individuals selected under different conditions: free from or infected by the digenean trematode Himasthla elongata, and under cadmium exposure at 15 µg Cd L−1. Results evidenced that MT concentrations were significantly increased by both treatments; parasite infection and Cd exposure. Moreover, congruent results between MT protein and gene expression levels were obtained.

This paper aims to investigate the potential interest of using a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) based on GPRS/GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology to obtain a better estimation of fishing activity and distribution of a small-scale artisanal fleet, for which the European satellite-based system is not available. Since the early 1980s, the artisanal fishery targeting blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo), commonly known as “voraz”, has been developing along the Strait of Gibraltar area. Up to now the fishing effort was estimated using the number of sales, a proxy for the number of fishing days. This measure does not, however, capture the “missing effort”, i.e., fishing days resulting in no catch or not enough catch to be sold at public auction. The European satellite-based VMS provides information about the dynamics of different fishing fleets, but is not installed on small vessels (<15 m), such as those used by the artisanal “voracera” fleet targeting blackspot seabream in the Strait of Gibraltar. The Andalucía Regional Government installed its own vessel monitoring system on several artisanal fleets using GPRS/GSM cellular network technology that sends data on vessel positions and speed every three minutes. Data collected from 2009 to 2011 using this system were filtered and analysed to estimate fishing effort, catch rates and the spatial distribution of the blackspot seabream fishery. The estimates obtained seem to provide a good representation of fishery reality. As expected, the missing effort increases as the resource levels decrease. Additionally, expert knowledge of the fishery allowed application of an algorithm for splitting these daily trips into estimated fishing hauls. Afterwards the spatial distribution of catches and Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE) could be obtained linking VMS locations with landings information. This study provides a considerably finer spatial scale view of the fishery than data available in the past.

A study of microhabitat use by fourteen abundant fish species was undertaken in the lower Ntem River Basin in Cameroon (Africa). Seventy-one microhabitats including pools, raceways and riffles were studied twice during the 1994 and 1995 dry season. Results obtained by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed a good niche separation along the ordination axes I (λ1 = 0.37) and II (λ2 = 0.20). Microhabitat selection by these species reflects response to several physical factors including width, depth, current velocity and substrate type. However, a substantial part of the variation in species segregation was explained by both instream (% leaves, woods and roots, and aquatic plants) and bankside (% mean canopy closure)cover. A striking pattern encountered during this study was the frequent size-related variation in habitat use displayed by many species. For example, smaller individuals of Brycinus longipinnis, Barbus camptacanthus, Distichodus notospilus, and D. hypostomatus, occurred more often in faster flowing waters than did their larger conspecifics. The association displayed by CCA was high (0.957 and 0.938, respectively for the first and second axis), and Monte Carlo test (99 permutations) revealed that these associations were significantly different from random (p = 0.01). The implications of these results for habitat management are discussed.

The distribution and population structure of the red shrimp, Aristeus antennatus, were investigated for an unexploited fishing ground in the Greek Ionian Sea (middle-eastern Mediterranean). A total of 8618 specimens, 7273 females and 1345 males was caught during a 12-month survey, from January to December 1997, at depths ranging from 400 to 800 m. Monthly size frequency distributions were analysed using different techniques, resulting in estimates of growth and mortality. Carapace lengths (cephalothoracic lengths, CL) ranged between 12 and 62 mm for females and 9 and 45 mm for males. The mean size of specimens exhibited statistically significant differences in relation to sex and months. Recruitment of both sexes occurred in mid-winter (January). Only the mean size of females seemed to increase with depth. Estimation of the von Bertalanffy growth parameters revealed high k values and a life expectancy of 4 and 5 years for males and females, respectively. A high percentage of specimens bore spermatophores during May and August, indicating that these months were peak breeding periods. Natural mortality rates ranged from 0.55 to 0.70 for females and from 0.62 to 0.79 for males, depending on the method used. Based on its biology and population dynamics, it appears that the red shrimp population in the study area has the potential to support a viable fishery.

Skates and rays constitute important resources for several fishing fleets of mainland Portugal with total annual landings around 1500 tons. Regardless of their commercial interest, landed specimens are not differentiated at species level. To get a preliminary insight into the species diversity of landings, a pilot sampling program on skates and rays composition was executed in the two ports of mainland Portugal with the highest landings of this group– Matosinhos and Peniche. Sampling was carried out once a month in each port between January and April 2001. Based on the information obtained, a new sampling plan was established for the artisanal fishery (gillnet fleet), at each landing port. This sampling program was conducted until the end of 2001. A total of eight species were identified. Raja brachyura and Raja clavata were the most common species found in the landings of each port, while Raja miraletus was only occasionally recorded. Rajidae landings in mainland Portugal are mainly by-catch of the artisanal segment of the commercial fishing fleet.

The meagre Argyrosomus regius is a large Sciaenid fish known to reproduce in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea in just five distinct and restricted geographic areas: along the Mauritanian coast and at estuary openings (Gironde, Tagus, Guadalquivir and Nile). The biological traits of A. regius (high dispersal capabilities, high fecundity, long larval phase, overlapping generations, reproduction until 40 years of age) are, in principle, favourable to high gene flow, which should lead to genetic homogeneity over large geographic scales. Nevertheless, the high geographic distances between the few reproductive areas leads one ask whether there is genetic differentiation in this species. In the present study, the genetic differentiation of the wild A. regius was investigated across most of its natural range from the Atlantic Ocean (France, Portugal, Spain, Mauritania) to the Mediterranean Sea (Egypt, Turkey), using 11 microsatellite markers previously identified in another Sciaenid, the red drum Sciaenops ocellatus. At least two very distinct groups could be identified, separated by the Gibraltar Strait. Genetic divergences (FST values) were intermediate between the Atlantic samples (0.012–0.041), high between Egypt and the Atlantic (0.06–0.107) or Aegean Sea (0.081) and extremely high between the Aegean Sea and the Atlantic (0.098–0.168). A. regius exhibited a very high level of genetic differentiation rarely reported in marine fishes. These results also demonstrate the existence of a sixth independent spawning area in the Menderes delta (Turkey). Factors potentially involved in this very high genetic fragmentation are discussed, including physical barriers, glaciation pulses and biological traits.

The Chilean jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) is one of the mostimportant exploited fish populations in the world. Its area of distribution covers thesub-tropical waters of the South Pacific Ocean, from South America up to New Zealand andeven Australia. It is subject to high variations in biomass, with annual world catchesvarying from less than 0.5 to almost 5 million tonnes. Management of this species and itsfishery requires a correct understanding of the population structure. Although severalhypotheses have been proposed, suggesting that there are up to four independentpopulations, genetic analysis indicates only a single population in the South PacificOcean. We consider the two most probable structures for this population: a “patchypopulation”, where all the fish belong to a single population that expands and contractsdepending on the biomass; and a metapopulation, where a source population creates severalsubpopulations that can remain independent during prolonged periods, depending on theenvironmental conditions. We studied the conditions for these hypotheses to representreality, especially the demographic structure and existence of different spawning areas.Using knowledge obtained from fisheries and acoustic surveys, we show that if we applytheir definitions strictly, neither of the two hypotheses can be fully rejected.Nevertheless, some particular spatial characteristics observed recently between thePeruvian and Centre-South Chilean parts of the distribution lead us to conclude that themetapopulation definition is likely to better describe the stock. The consequences of eachpopulation structure for fisheries management are listed, showing that the metapopulationhypothesis represents a safer definition for stock assessment. We conclude that T.murphyi can be described as a metapopulation, but also that the definitionsproposed in the literature on metapopulations are not fully adapted to pelagic fishpopulations with a basin-scale distribution range, and suggests specific research thatcould be done in this field.

Seasonal changes in feeding habits and diet of the cockle Cerastoderma glaucum (Mollusca, Bivalvia) were analysed using carbon (δ 13C) and nitrogen (δ 15N) stable isotopes. I aimed to investigate the role of benthic and pelagic sources in the diet of this dominant infaunal bivalve on a western Mediterranean sandy bottomed pond. Adult C. glaucum and all potential organic sources (particulate and sedimentary organic matter, seagrass, macroalgae, heterotrophic detritus) were collected and analysed for δ 13C and δ 15N. In total 5 dominant organic sources were found, ranging between –21.0 and –8.0 ‰ for δ 13C and from 3.0 to about 7.0% for δ 15N. C. glaucum assimilated fraction ranged between –14.0/–15.0% and 6.0/9.0% respectively, for carbon and nitrogen, while its estimated fractionation seasonally varied between 1 and 1.5 for carbon and was about 3 for nitrogen. C. glaucum reflected the isotopic composition of its food while maintaining, throughout the year, a fairly constant isotopic composition in its assimilated fraction, despite the high variability in isotopic composition of available sources.

Les relations trophiques entre une population d'huîtres cultivées et la nourriture potentielle sont modélisées en tenant compte des caractéristiques du milieu estuarien. Un modèle en boîtes permet de coupler le transport du matériel particulaire et son assimilation par la population d'huîtres. Les échanges entre boîtes dépendent de leur volume, de l'excursion de marée et des débits résiduels calculés à partir des résultats d'un modèle numérique courantologique. La consommation, l'assimilation et la respiration sont les termes d'une équation de bilan énergétique permettant de simuler la croissance des huîtres. Le modèle met en évidence un gradient de croissance selon un axe sud-nord et l'interaction stock-performance de croissance. L'ensemble des résultats permet de montrer les limites du modèle et de justifier l'étude ultérieure de la remise en suspension au niveau du sédiment et du couplage entre la consommation et la production primaire.

This paper presents a non invasive, rapid and reliable way to quantitatively assess fin erosion in sea bass (Dicentrarchuslabrax). The method is based on a visual assessment of fin profile and area loss of all fins except the anterior dorsal, on a scale from 0 to 4 in comparison with a perfect fin. The effects of stocking density (SD) and temperature on fin damage were investigated under experimental conditions (100–250 g fish). Over a 4-month period, mean erosion index (mean erosion level of all fins) was 10 times higher at 120 than at 20 kg m−3, where most fins were undamaged. Damage was also dependent on time and oxygen concentration (35% lower at 53% O2 saturation than at 105%). Fin condition was also affected by temperature: mean erosion index was 0.22–0.25 at 13–16 °C, but five times higher at 25  °C. Caudal and dorsal fins were always the most eroded. Fin damage was then monitored in a large land-based farm using high SD, and in a small sea cage farm operating at low SD. At the first site, 6 batches of two market size groups were examined: L (850–930 g, 50–80 kg m−3) and S (375–400 g, 42–60 kg m−3). Fin condition was good in all batches (mean erosion index, 1.1–1.3) and lowest at the highest SD. At the second site, four batches of large fish (350–890 g, 26–24 kg m−3) and four other groups below market size (100–270 g, 8–16 kg m−3) were examined. Fin erosion was the highest in large fish (mean erosion index, 1.1–1.2) and in the sea cages most exposed to climatic disturbances. In both sites, the most eroded fins were the caudal and dorsal. Differences in other external injuries were also observed between the two sites (less necrosis and more scale injuries in sea cages). The causes of fin damage are discussed in relation to metabolic and/or behavioral adaptations to rearing conditions and the main actions that could be taken to improve fin condition are discussed.
