In a recent paper, Christie and Gopalsamy [2] used Melnikov's method to establish a sufficient condition for the existence of chaotic behaviour, in the sense of Smale, in a particular time-periodically perturbed planar autonomous system of ordinary differential equations. They then concluded with an application to the dynamics of a one-dimensional anharmonic oscillator. In this paper, the same system is considered and a condition for the existence of subharmonic orbits in the perturbed system is deduced, using the subharmonic Melnikov theory. Finally, an application is given to the dynamical behaviour of the one-dimensional anharmonic oscillator system.

In earlier work we have studied a method for discretization in time of a parabolic problem, which consists of representing the exact solution as an integral in the complex plane and then applying a quadrature formula to this integral. In application to a spatially semidiscrete finite-element version of the parabolic problem, at each quadrature point one then needs to solve a linear algebraic system having a positive-definite matrix with a complex shift. We study iterative methods for such systems, considering the basic and preconditioned versions of first the Richardson algorithm and then a conjugate gradient method.

The Huygens' property is exploited to study propagation relations for solutions of certain types of linear higher order Cauchy problems. Motivated by the solution properties of the abstract wave problem, addition formulas are developed for the solution operators of these problems. The application of these alternative forms of the solution operators to data leads to connecting operator relations between distinct solutions of the problems at different times. We examine this solution behaviour for both analytic and abstract Cauchy problems. A basic algorithm for constructing addition formulas for solutions of ordinary differential equations is included.

This paper deals with the complete constitutive relations of elastoplastic deformation process theory, based on llyushin's postulate of isotropy and hypotheses of local determinancy and complanarity in plastic stage with complex loading. The formulation of the boundary value problem is given and existence and uniqueness theorems are considered.

In this paper, by using the Leggett–Williams fixed point theorem, we prove the existence of three nonnegative solutions to second-order nonlinear impulsive differential equations with a three-point boundary value problem.

The effectiveness of four techniques for producing wide sense stationary data with exponential semivariograms is examined. Comparison is made primarily on the basis of the observed semivariograms. The LU decomposition of the covariance matrix appears to most accurately model specified semivariograms, whilst the more computationally efficient Matrix Polynomial approximation and Turning Bands methods may be more useful in practice.

The problem of planning the annual intakes to a university course, in which there are capacity constraints on the total enrolment, so as to produce a steady transition into an eventual no-growth situation is formulated as a linear program. The special structure of the problem is exploited to find a particular, optimal solution and to show that the addition of integrality constraints on the intakes poses no additional difficulty. The usefulness of the proposed methods is illustrated with an example from the University of Adelaide.

We derive a higher order nonlinear evolution equation for a broader bandwidth three-dimensional capillary–gravity wave packet, in the presence of a surface current produced by an internal wave. Instead of a set of coupled equations, a single nonlinear evolution equation is obtained by eliminating the velocity potential for the wave-induced slow motion. Finally, the equation is expressed in an integro-differential equation form, similar to Zakharov’s integral equation. Using the evolution equation derived here, we show that the two sidebands of a surface capillary–gravity wave get excited as a result of resonance with an internal wave, all propagating in the same direction. It is also shown that surface waves can grow exponentially with time at the expense of the energy of the internal wave.

We show how a short and elementary proof can be provided for a recently-published inequality ([6], [4]) which has found a number of applications.

In this paper we introduce a set of orthonormal functions, , where ϕn[r] is composed of a sine function and a sigmoidal transformation γr of order r>0. Based on the proposed functions ϕn[r] named by sigmoidal sine functions, we consider a series expansion of a function on the interval [−1,1] and the related convergence analysis. Furthermore, we extend the sigmoidal transformation to the whole real line ℝ and then, by reconstructing the existing sigmoidal cosine functions ψn[r] and the presented functions ϕn[r], we develop two kinds of 2-periodic series expansions on ℝ. Superiority of the presented sigmoidal-type series in approximating a function by the partial sum is demonstrated by numerical examples.

In this paper we propose an easy-to-implement algorithm for solving general nonlinear optimization problems with nonlinear equality constraints. A nonmonotonic trust region strategy is suggested which does not require the merit function to reduce its value in every iteration. In order to deal with large problems, a reduced Hessian is used to replace a full Hessian matrix. To avoid solving quadratic trust region subproblems exactly which usually takes substantial computation, we only require an approximate solution which requires less computation. The calculation of correction steps, necessary from a theoretical view point to overcome the Maratos effect but which often brings in negative results in practice, is avoided in most cases by setting a criterion to judge its necessity. Global convergence and a local superlinear rate are then proved. This algorithm has a good performance.

It is shown that for the three dimensional Ising model with dipole-dipole interactions, the thermodynamic limit of the free energy with simple boundary conditions is not the same as the thermodynamic limit of the free energy with periodic boundary conditions. A variational principle is developed to connect the two free energies.

We discuss uniqueness and continuation of solutions to the Cauchy problem for a two dimensional Emden-Fowler differential system.

In this paper we shall derive some asymptotic formulae for spectra of the third boundary value problem in Rn, n = 2 or 3, linked with variation of a positive function entering the boundary conditions. Further results may be obtained.

We investigate the behaviour of a reaction described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics in an immobilised enzyme reactor (IER). The IER is treated as a well-stirred flow reactor, with the restriction that bounded and unbounded enzyme species are constrained to remain within the reaction vessel. Our aim is to identify the best operating conditions for the reactor.

The cases in which an iminobilised enzyme reactor is used to either reduce pollutant emissions or to synthesise a product are considered. For the former we deduce that the reactor should be operated using low flow rates whereas for the latter high flow rates are optimal. It is also shown that periodic behaviour is impossible.

Three typical elastic problems, including beam bending, truss extension and compression, and two-rings collision are simulated with smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) using Lagrangian and Eulerian algorithms. A contact-force model for elastic collisions and equation of state for pressure arising in colliding elastic bodies are also analytically derived. Numerical validations, on using the corresponding theoretical models, are carried out for the beam bending, truss extension and compression simulations. Numerical instabilities caused by largely deformed particle configurations in finite/large elastic deformations are analysed. The numerical experiments show that the algorithms handle small deformations well, but only the Lagrangian algorithm can handle large elastic deformations. The numerical results obtained from the Lagrangian algorithm also show a good agreement with the theoretical values.

Sending microwaves through bauxite ore allows almost continuous measurement of moisture content during offload by conveyor belt from a ship. Data and results from a microwave analyser were brought to a European Study Group with Industry at the University of Limerick, with the over-arching question of whether the results are accurate enough. The analyser equipment uses linear regression against phase shifts and signal attenuation to infer moisture content in real time. Simple initial modelling conducted during the Study Group supports this use of linear regression for phase shift data. However, that work also revealed striking and puzzling differences between model and attenuation data.

We present an improved model that allows for multiple reflections of travelling microwaves within the bauxite and in the air above it. Our new model uses four differential equations to describe how electric fields change with distance in each of four layers. By solving these equations and taking reflections into account, we can accurately predict what the receiving antenna will pick up.

Our new solution provides much-improved matches to data from the microwave analyser, and indicates the deleterious effects of reflections. Modelled signal strength behaviour features a highly undesirable noninvertible dependence on bauxite mixture permittivity.

Practical measures that might be expected to reduce the effects of microwave reflections and improve the accuracy of microwave analyser results are suggested based on our improved model solution. This modelling approach and these results are anticipated to extend to the analysis of moisture content during transport on conveyor belts of other ores, slurries, coal, grains and pharmaceutical powders, especially when the depth of the conveyed material is variable.

We consider in this article an evolutionary monotone follower problem in [0,1]. State processes under consideration are controlled diffusion processes , solutions of dyx(t) = g(yx(t), t)dt + σu(yx(t), t) dwt + dυt with yx(0) = x ∈[0, 1], where the control processes υt are increasing, positive, and adapted. The cost functional is of integral type, with certain explicit cost of control action including the cost of jumps. We shall present some analytic results of the value function, mainly its characterisation, by standard dynamic programming arguments.

This paper investigates spatial data on the unit sphere. Traditionally, isotropic Gaussian random fields are considered as the underlying mathematical model of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We discuss the generalized multifractional Brownian motion and its pointwise Hölder exponent on the sphere. The multifractional approach is used to investigate the CMB data from the Planck mission. These data consist of CMB radiation measurements at narrow angles of the sky sphere. The results obtained suggest that the estimated Hölder exponents for different CMB regions do change from location to location. Therefore, the CMB temperature intensities are multifractional. The methodology developed is used to suggest two approaches for detecting regions with anomalies in the cleaned CMB maps.
