Following upon a previous paper [1] on the existence of chiral transformations in a foliated version of the Cremmer, Julia and Scherk model, we deduce a couple of interesting properties of the model. These are:

(i) TM4 is isomorphic to a quotient Lie pseudoalgebra on the algebra of basic functions in M11;

(ii) There is a locally trivial fibration which exhibits M11 as M7 × U, U ⊂ W and W is the basic manifold of the foliation [5]

(iii) The chiral group of the model is identified as Clx (L, gL) × Clx (Q, gQ), the factors are respectively the multiplication groups of units in the Clifford algebras Clx (L, gL) and Clx (Q, gQ) and matching of this group with phenomenology is briefly discussed.

We consider fluid in a channel of finite height. There is a circular hole in the channel bottom, through which fluid of a lower density is injected and rises to form a plume. Viscous boundary layers close to the top and bottom of the channel are assumed to be so thin that the viscous fluid effectively slips along each of these boundaries. The problem is solved using a novel spectral method, in which Hankel transforms are first used to create a steady-state axisymmetric (inviscid) background flow that exactly satisfies the boundary conditions. A viscous correction is then added, so as to satisfy the time-dependent Boussinesq Navier–Stokes equations within the fluid, leaving the boundary conditions intact. Results are presented for the “lazy” plume, in which the fluid rises due only to its own buoyancy, and we study in detail its evolution with time to form an overturning structure. Some results for momentum-driven plumes are also presented, and the effect of the upper wall of the channel on the evolution of the axisymmetric plume is discussed.

The problem of surface water wave scattering by two thin nearly vertical barriers submerged in deep water from the same depth below the mean free surface and extending infinitely downwards is investigated here assuming linear theory, where configurations of the two barriers are described by the same shape function. By employing a simplified perturbational analysis together with appropriate applications of Green's integral theorem, first-order corrections to the reflection and transmission coefficients are obtained. As in the case of a single nearly vertical barrier, the first-order correction to the transmission coefficient is found to vanish identically, while the correction for the reflection coefficient is obtained in terms of a number of definite integrals involving the shape function describing the two barriers. The result for a single barrier is recovered when two barriers are merged into a single barrier.

It is shown that for the three dimensional Ising model with dipole-dipole interactions, the thermodynamic limit of the free energy with simple boundary conditions is not the same as the thermodynamic limit of the free energy with periodic boundary conditions. A variational principle is developed to connect the two free energies.

We discuss uniqueness and continuation of solutions to the Cauchy problem for a two dimensional Emden-Fowler differential system.

Three typical elastic problems, including beam bending, truss extension and compression, and two-rings collision are simulated with smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) using Lagrangian and Eulerian algorithms. A contact-force model for elastic collisions and equation of state for pressure arising in colliding elastic bodies are also analytically derived. Numerical validations, on using the corresponding theoretical models, are carried out for the beam bending, truss extension and compression simulations. Numerical instabilities caused by largely deformed particle configurations in finite/large elastic deformations are analysed. The numerical experiments show that the algorithms handle small deformations well, but only the Lagrangian algorithm can handle large elastic deformations. The numerical results obtained from the Lagrangian algorithm also show a good agreement with the theoretical values.

In this paper we shall derive some asymptotic formulae for spectra of the third boundary value problem in Rn, n = 2 or 3, linked with variation of a positive function entering the boundary conditions. Further results may be obtained.

Some swimming microorganisms are sensitive to light, and this can affect the way in which they negotiate their environment. In particular, photophobic cells are repelled from unfavourable light conditions, and in a quiescent fluid environment this can be observed as elevated cell levels in regions away from these light conditions. This photoresponsive effect is of interest due to its potential technological applications. For example, the use of light to focus and direct cells could be used as a convenient means to separate out the algae used in biofuel production (for example, hydrogen), or exploited within devices for biodetection of environmental contaminants. However, in these types of situations the swimming cells will usually be suspended in a flow with shear. In this environment, it has previously been shown that cells can become hydrodynamically trapped in regions of high fluid shear, and so the extent to which photofocusing can occur under these conditions is not immediately clear. Moreover, in applications where the light must pass through appreciable volumes of the suspension, cells will typically absorb light and so shade each other from the illumination. As such, the intensity at any point in the flow is dependent upon the global cell concentration. Hence, in this study we model the coupled influence of fluid shear and cell photosensitivity on a suspension of swimming microorganisms, and ask under what circumstances a suspension of photophobic cells might be focused into high concentration regions.

We investigate the behaviour of a reaction described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics in an immobilised enzyme reactor (IER). The IER is treated as a well-stirred flow reactor, with the restriction that bounded and unbounded enzyme species are constrained to remain within the reaction vessel. Our aim is to identify the best operating conditions for the reactor.

The cases in which an iminobilised enzyme reactor is used to either reduce pollutant emissions or to synthesise a product are considered. For the former we deduce that the reactor should be operated using low flow rates whereas for the latter high flow rates are optimal. It is also shown that periodic behaviour is impossible.

A simple model for a problem in combustion theory has multiple steady state solutions when a parameter is in a certain range. This note deals with the initial value problem when the initial temperature takes the form of a hot spot. Estimates on the extent and temperature of the spot for the steady state solution to be super-critical are obtained.

We have adapted the Spectral Transform Method, a technique commonly used in non-linear meteorological problems, to the numerical integration of the Robinson-Trautman equation. This approach eliminates difficulties due to the S2 × R+ topology of the equation. The method is highly accurate for smooth data and is numerically robust. Under spectral decomposition the long-time equilibrium state takes a particularly simple form: all nonlinear (l ≥ 2) modes tend to zero. We discuss the interaction and eventual decay of these higher order modes, as well as the evolution of the Bondi mass and other derived quantities. A qualitative comparison between the Spectral Transform Method and two finite difference schemes is given.

Steady state solutions for spontaneous thermal ignition in a unit sphere are considered. The multiplicity of unstable, intermediate, steady state, temperature profiles is calculated and shown for selected parameter values. The crossing of the temperature profiles corresponding to the unstable, intermediate, steady states is exhibited in a particular case and is proven in general using elementary ideas from analysis. Estimates of the location of crossing points are given.

The paper asks and answers the question “When does dominance of a particular strategy play a role in the search for evolutionary stable strategies?” The answer is much less obvious than would appear at first glance.

When there is strict dominance of a pure strategy, it is clear that the dominated strategy should never be employed in any conflict. However, when the dominance is not strict it is less obvious that the strategy should not be used. The research was originally intended to clear up this grey area in the theory of evolutionary stable strategies, but it has turned out to be of more than simply academic interest. The result can be used, with varying degrees of success, to simplify the search procedure for these evolutionary stable strategies when a reward matrix is given.

We use an integral equation formulation approach to value shout options, which are exotic options giving an investor the ability to “shout” and lock in profits while retaining the right to benefit from potentially favourable movements in the underlying asset price. Mathematically, the valuation is a free boundary problem involving an optimal exercise boundary which marks the region between shouting and not shouting. We also find the behaviour of the optimal exercise boundary for one- and two-shout options close to expiry.

The fractal kinetics curve derived by Savageau is analysed to show that its parameters are not uniquely determined given four appropriately situated data points. Comparison is made with an alternate fractal Michaelis-Menten equation derived by Lopez-Quintela and Casado.

During the late 1940s, T. M. Cherry published a series of research papers on uniform asymptotic formulae for transition points in ordinary differential equations. This work, together with his research into transonic gas flows, for which it was a necessary precursor, is probably his best known and most widely quoted piece of research. An analysis is made of the impact of Cherry's work on subsequent developments in this field, both in comparison to the work of others and with respect to Cherry's work on other topics.

We analyse the various integrability criteria which have been proposed for discrete systems, focusing on the singularity confinement method. We present the exact procedure used for the derivation of discrete Painlevé equations based on the deautonomisation of integrable autonomous mappings. This procedure is then examined in the light of more recent criteria based on the notion of the complexity of the mapping. We show that the low-growth requirements lead, in the case of the discrete Painlevé equations, to exactly the same results as singularity confinement. The analysis of linearisable mappings shows that they have special growth properties which can be used in order to identify them. A working strategy for the study of discrete integrability based on singularity confinement and low-growth considerations is also proposed.

Finite amplitude oscillatory convection rolls in the form of travelling waves are studied for a horizontal layer of a low Prandtl number fluid heated from below and rotating rapidly about a vertical axis. The results of the stability and nonlinear analyses indicate that there is no subcritical instability and that the oscillatory rolls are unstable for the ranges of the Prandtl number and the rotation rate considered in this paper.

Image registration is the process of finding an alignment between two or more images so that their appearances match. It has been widely studied and applied to several fields, including medical imaging and biology, where it is related to morphometrics. In this paper, we present a construction of conformal diffeomorphisms which is based on constrained optimization. We consider a set of different penalty terms that aim to enforce conformality, based on discretizations of the Cauchy–Riemann equations and geometric principles, and demonstrate them experimentally on a variety of images.

A mixed boundary-valued problem associated with the diffusion equation, that involves the physical problem of cooling of an infinite slab in a two-fluid medium, is solved completely by using the Wiener-Hopf technique. An analytical solution is derived for the temperature distribution at the quench fronts being created by two different layers of cold fluids having different cooling abilities moving on the upper surface of the slab at constant speed. Simple expressions are derived for the values of the sputtering temperatures of the slab at the points of contact with the respective layers, assuming one layer of the fluid to be of finite extent and the other of infinite extent. The main problem is solved through a three-part Wiener-Hopf problem of a special type, and the numerical results under certain special circumstances are obtained and presented in the form of a table.
