Cyanobacteria and their principal cyanotoxins were studied in the largest Italian lake (Lake Garda, 65 m a.s.l.) and in a near smaller reservoir (Lake Ledro, 652 m a.s.l.). The two lakes share a fraction of water due to a pipe pumping water from and into the lakes and the same dominant cyanobacterial species (Planktothrix rubescens). Despite the differences in the concentrations of cyanotoxins (mostly microcystins, MCs) and biovolumes of P. rubescens (BVPr) (over one order of magnitude), the Bayesian analyses linking these two variables showed striking similarities, suggesting the existence of similar toxic genotypes colonizing the two water bodies and a constitutive MC production. It was stressed that a greater sensitivity and reliability in the management strategies aimed at minimizing the risks due to cyanobacteria should also contemplate the use of specific lake-tailored models linking MCs and BVPr.

The within-site patchy distribution of organisms represents a natural source of variability that can bias the precision of biotic indices. This study aims to evaluate the spatial distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates and its effects on the biotic index used in Italy for assessing the ecological status of rivers. Two main issues were considered: the sampling design and the minimum number of replicates which are necessary to achieve a given precision level. To this purpose, 30 surber replicates were taken, instead of the ten required for the application of the index, in a homogeneous reach of a mid-sized perennial river (Trebbia River, Northern Italy). The percentile confidence interval (p.c.i.) of the index was calculated from 1000 possible communities with the resampling method and the bootstrap procedure. The 95% p.c.i. varied from 0.195 to 0.227, which is great considering that the index ranges from 0 to 1. The metrics based on abundance data were especially affected by the heterogeneous distribution of organisms. The resulting precision of the index increased only partially when doubling the sampling effort.

The current status of the stream-living insects and gastropods of the island of Gran Canaria in the Atlantic Canary Islands is documented. Data from semiquantitative kick samples taken in 11 streams are supplemented by non-standardized collecting in the same and ten additional streams. The kick samples included some 9,000 specimens of 98 taxa, and in total 123 taxa were recorded from the studied streams in 1994 and 1995. The stream fauna was dominated by Diptera with some 80 taxa, followed by Coleoptera with 37 species known from the island. The kick samples yielded 11-36 species per stream and visit, whereas up to 48 species were scored when all collecting methods were included. Local diversity given as Fisher's α ranged from 3.2 to 10.3. Clustering showed only weak spatial patterns and resulted in much higher similarities among localities when based on the semiquantitative samples than when based on presence/absence including records from all collecting methods. Species distributions among localities were not significantly nested. The faunal similarity with the adjacent island of Tenerife is striking. Six of the Tenerife species are seemingly absent from Gran Canaria, whereas Gran Canaria has 13 species not found in Tenerife. Most of the 22 aquatic insect species in Gran Canaria only known from older records, prefer lentic habitats not included in our study. All except one of the five species endemic to Gran Canaria are considered extinct or on the edge of extinction. Increased future extinction rates are predicted as a response of the extreme habitat loss, with only three permanent streams known on the island today.

Spatial-temporal changes in the physico-chemical characteristics of the Agura river (Basque Country and Cantabrian region, Spain) were studied over six months, a period that included a long period of unusual drought and the return to more normal hydrological conditions. The chemical composition of the water was affected by water flow. It wasinfluenced either directly through the drainage characteristics at the level of different parts of the surrounding basin,or indirectly through the action of biotic communities on their environment. From these results, some spatial and/ortemporal models have been developed for the dynamics of the different variables in this study.

De 1984 à 1991, 114 stations du crénal et de l'épirhithral ont été régulièrement prospectées dans les hauts massifs montagneux du Sud-Ouest de l'Europe (Alpes françaises et italiennes, Pyrénées et principales sierras de la Péninsule Ibérique). Parmi les 33 espèces recensées, peu sont crénophiles : S. (N.) carpathicum, P. (P.) latimucro et S. (N.) oligotuberculatum se développent en très haute altitude ; S. (N.) vernum, S. (N.) brevidens, S. (N.) quasidecolletum et S. (E.) petricolum en haute montagne ; S. (N.) costatum, S. (R.) lamachi et P. (P.) tomosvaryi en moyenne montagne et piémont ; la majorité d'entre elles fréquentent également l'épirhithral. Des espèces peu alticoles dans les Alpes ou les Pyrénées peuvent atteindre des altitudes de plus en plus élevées vers le sud de l'Europe (sierras andalouses en Espagne, Haut-Atlas marocain), par exemple : S (N.) costatum, S. (S.) intermedium, S. (R.) lamachi.

Ce travail concerne les données faunistiques et écologiques relatives aux espèces italiennes du genre Torrenticola recueillies dans l'Apennin. Treize espèces ont été signalées, cinq sont nouvelles pour la faune italienne (T. similis, T. lativalvata, T. brevirostris, T. ungeri et T. amplexa). L'étude des caractères dimensionels a permis d'individualiser quelques indices morphologiques de valeur discriminante à un niveau spécifique et a permis de mettre en synonymie quatre espèces. Une distribution différente des espèces entre les secteurs de l'Apennin abruzzin et calabrais a été aussi mise en évidence. L'importance du microhabitat, déterminée par la typologie du cours d'eau, a été soulignée afin d'expliquer la distribution géographique des espèces dans le bassin méditerranéen.

L'étude porte sur la chimie et le phytobenthos de cours d'eau à proximité de divers apports en zinc et en plomb : une mine désaffectée à Planioles, près de Figeac, un complexe minier en activité près de Largentière, un ancien complexe minier et une fonderie fermée près de Villemagne, une importante fonderie en activité et les usines associées à Viviez près de Decazeville. Sur les douze stations étudiées, dix présentent des teneurs élevées en Zn, et en quelques cas en Cd et en Pb. Les stations situées à proximité de fonderies de zinc présentent les teneurs les plus élevées pour tous les métaux. L'augmentation des teneurs métalliques conduit à une diminution de la flore mais d'autres facteurs peuvent également jouer un rôle. Une station paraît être le siège des plus fortes teneurs en Zn (3 840 mg l-1) et en Cd (345 mg l-1) jamais recensés pour lesquelles des organismes photosynthétiques sont présents. Les trois espèces récoltées sont : Hormidium rivulare, Hormidium flaccidum et Pinnularia subcapitata.

Le cycle de reproduction de Gammarus pulex et G. fossarum a été étudié à partir de prélèvements mensuels effectués dans six stations de la région lyonnaise.

Dans quatre stations la température de l'eau est pratiquement constante ou ne subit que des variations d'amplitude très faible au cours de l'année : la reproduction des Gammares y est continue. Dans les deux autres stations les variations saisonnières de la température de l'eau sont au contraire importantes : les Gammares présentent alors une période de repos sexuel en automne, celle-ci s'achève au début de l'hiver.

L'existence d'un rythme reproductif semble être sous la dépendance d'une action synergique de la température de l'eau et de la photopériode.

Taxonomical efforts in freshwater zooplankton are continuously needed for the delineation of species. Even today, confusion exists in correct identification of several European Cladocera because of poor original descriptions and subtle differences in morphology. In this context, we discuss three of the rarest Alona-like Chydoridae in the Palaearctic and their validity. 1) Alona moniezi, only reported once from Vichy area, France, has a male indistinguishable from that of A. elegans Kurz, 1875 while females show characters of A. elegans and of Coronatella rectangula. We provide a description of this taxon, with intermediate morphology and discuss the possibilities of hybridization. 2) Alona karelica is unusual as one of the few eurythermic species of a predominantly stenothermic A. pulchella-group. We discuss Neotropical A. cf. karelica from Mexico as its closest relative. Both show similarities with the semi-terrestrial A. bromelicola from Nicaragua, forming a small A. karelica-section within the A. pulchella-group. 3) A. weltneri is redescribed based on type material and we confirm it as a member of the A. costata-group. We discuss the three taxa and expand their diagnosis. A. weltneri and A. karelica are both found sporadically, and little is known about their ecology. Their scarcity in the Palaearctic may be linked with specialisation to a peculiar habitat and the possibility that these are true relicts.

A l'occasion de recherches sur la dermatite cercarienne qui affecte le lac d'Annecy, un des plus grands lacs alpins français,un inventaire des populations de mollusques de sa zone littorale a été réalisé. Les gastéropodes sont assez mal représentés et lesespèces qui sont généralement des éléments dominants de la faune lacustre comme Valvata piscinalis, Bithynia tentaculata ouPlanorbis carinatus sont peu abondantes. Les nombreux aménagements du littoral qui ont fortement réduit la superficie des ceinturesvégétales sont probablement responsables de cette situation. En revanche, les peuplements de Sphaeriidae, dominés parPisidium subtruncatum, P. henslowanum et P. moitessierianum sont abondants et bien diversifiés.Au cours des 40 dernières années, 6 nouvelles espèces se sont installées dans le lac d'Annecy. Trois d'entre elles ont actuellementlargement colonisé le plan d'eau. Il s'agit de Dreissena polymorpha, Potamopyrgus antipodarum et de Pisidium moitessierianum.L'apparition récente de cette dernière, qui vit seulement dans les grands lacs de plaine et le potamon des cours d'eaucontrairement aux autres Pisidium du lac, pourrait être une conséquence du réchauffement climatique.

Un recensement des types d'espèces européennes d'Ecdyonurus et de Rhithrogena décrites par le Père NAVÁS, et existant encore au Musée de Zoologie de Barcelone et dans la collection NAVÁS au Colegio del Salvador à Saragosse, est proposé.

Des spécimens de 10 espèces ont pu être retrouvés, dont 6 holotypes ♂ ; 3 lectotypes sont désignés.

Une espèce d'Ecdyonurus est redécrite (E. codinai) et deux autres tombent en synonymie (E. bollenganus et E. rivulorum). Six espèces de Rhithrogena (R. cincta, diaphana, ferruginea, gorrizi, loyolae et soteria) sont redécrites; en l'absence d'exuvies larvaires, aucune synonymie n'est encore proposée sur ce genre.

L'auteur mentionne 6 espèces nouvelles pour la Camargue : Cypridopsis aculeata, Paradoxostoma cf. intermedium, Xestoleberis auriantia, Notodromas persica, Erpetocypris chevreuxi, Dolerocypris sinensis. Les 3 dernières espèces sont nouvelles pour la faune française.

Dolerocypris sinensis, Notodromas persica sont localisés dans la haute Camargue dans des biotopes d'eau douce, ou faiblement oligohalins.

Erpetocypris chevreuxi serait aussi une espèce d'eau douce capable de résister à de faibles salinités.

Cypridopsis aculeata se rencontre dans des milieux oligosaumâtres-oligopoikilohalins.

Xestoleberis auriantia pullule dans les eaux saumâtres.

Paradoxostoma cf. intermedium : espèce marine, est capable de vivre dans les lagunes du littoral où la salinité varie de 30 à 40 g/l de NaCl.

Il est intéressant de noter l'avancée vers l'ouest de l'Europe de Dolero-cypris sinensis et de Notodromas persica, espèces connues des Balkans et de l'Italie du Nord.

Trois espèces d'Hydropsychidae ont été capturées dans la basse Nivelle à l'état de larves ou d'adultes : Cheumatopsyche lepida, Hydropsyche pellucidula et Hydropsyche siltalai. Une espèce de "profonds", Hydropsyche ornatula, n'a été obtenue qu'à l'état adulte.

Les cycles de développement de ces espèces sont complexes et variables. Une génération estivale facultative, liée aux conditions climatiques, semble se superposer au cycle classique, en particulier pour H. pellucidula.

La production larvaire est de 8,3 à 10,8 g/m2/an (poids humide) ; le taux de renouvellement (P/$\bar{B}$$\mathrm{See\; PDF}$) varie de 2,7 à 6,6 selon les espèces et les méthodes de calcul.

Les auteurs ont étudié la durée du développement embryonnaire et de la vie larvaire de Rana temporaria dans les lacs et mares de haute altitude des Pyrénées centrales. Cette durée, - et aussi la longueur de la jeune grenouille après la métamorphose - varient considérablement en fonction de l'altitude. Des élevages à différentes températures ont été réalisés pour expliquer ce phénomène.

Le développement de l'oeuf se déroule entre 4° et 25° C, et sa durée varie entre 3 et 20 jours. La constante thermique est de 60 environ.

Le développement du têtard s'effectue entre 7° et 28° C. Sa durée varie, en fonction de la température, de 20 jours (28° C) à plus de 18 mois. La constante thermique est de 500 environ.

La longueur du têtard, à la fin de sa vie larvaire, et celle de la jeune grenouille, est plus faible lorsque la vitesse de développement augmente.

La fluctuation autour de la longueur moyenne du têtard, à la fin de la vie larvaire, a été calculée. La courbe de cette fluctuation, en fonction de la température, passe par un minimum à 16° C. Les auteurs pensent que l'homogénéité de la population à cette température traduit des conditions optimales de développement.

D'autres facteurs que la température interviennent dans la durée de la vie larvaire. Des oeufs récoltés à 2 200 m d'altitude, et mis en élevage en juin, se développent plus rapidement, - à température égale - que des oeufs récoltés en avril à 1 500 m.

The benthic community of a braided reach of a lowland river was studied with the aim to identify functional habitats through the assessment of potential habitats. Functional habitats were defined considering physical and biological characteristics. Three reaches of the Chocancharava River (Córdoba, Argentina) were selected and six potential habitats were sampled during high and low water periods. Hydraulic and environmental variables were also registered in each sampling occasion. Taxonomic composition, macroinvertebrate abundance, richness, diversity and evenness were estimated for each identified functional habitat. TWINSPAN analysis was applied separately for two data sets (high water and low water period). This analysis showed that samples of the low water period were mainly grouped in relation to three habitats units: vegetated habitats, unvegetated habitats and habitats related to bars. These three habitats were considered functional habitats. The whole biological and environmental data sets were ordinated by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showing a significant relationship between benthic assemblages and environmental variables. This analysis grouped samples in relation to the functional habitats identified by TWINSPAN and indicated that the most influential environmental variables explaining the ordination were: current velocity, depth, substrate size and cover percent of rooted emergent macrophytes. Faunal composition determined by CCA for each functional habitat was in agreement with the results obtained by the Relative Preference Index (RPI). Factorial ANOVAs showed that abundance, taxonomic richness, diversity and evenness were different among the functional habitats and that the community attributes were influenced by the effect of the hydrological period and habitat. As the functional habitat approach provides useful tools in management and river rehabilitation the use of this methodology may allow to develop more appropriate restoration strategies to be applied in altered lowland reaches.

A revised diagnosis of Mixobates Thor, 1905, is given, including the proposal to rank this taxon as a separate genus. The species so far published from the palaearctic region are revised. Adults of M. caucasicus Tuzovskij, 1990 are described for the first time and the following synonyms are established : M. uncatus Sokolow, 1930 = M. processifer Thor, 1905 ; M. lundbladi Schwoerbel, 1957 = M. incurvatus Láska, 1954. The latter species is for the first time recorded from the Mediterranean area. Four new species are described : M. acutidentatus, M. brachypalpus and M. uncatellus from Russia, and M. maghrebinus from Morocco. A dichotomic key for the determination of the palaearctic species is presented.

Reservoirs are subject to severe fluctuations in the water level from seasonal and interannual climatic variations, as well as abstraction for irrigation, hydropower, and drinking water. This can affect the matter and energy transfer through the food web, of which zooplankton is of crucial importance. We traced seasonal changes in the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures of suspended particulate matter and crustacean zooplankton from a small Mediterranean reservoir. The δ13C and δ15N isotopic baseline signature of the lake varied seasonally, becoming more 13C-depleted and 15N-enriched in winter and less 13C-depleted and 15N-enriched values in the drier summer months, when external water inputs were negligible. Seasonal changes in the δ13C and δ15N SPM isotopic signature were well reflected in the herbivorous cladocerans. δ15N of the calanoid and cyclopoid copepods were at least 3‰ greater than for the herbivorous cladocera, suggesting their potential use as a food resource. δ13C of predatory copepods were also consistent with seasonal fluctuations in the δ13C SPM baseline, except during the heavy rains in early spring, when they were observably rich in lipids with a higher C/N ratio, suggesting that they had entered dormancy and were not actively feeding in the water column. This indicates the importance of taking into account not only the seasonality, but the community dynamics and trophic level of zooplankton taxa when interpreting stable isotope studies.

L'expérimentation, menée au cours d'un cycle annuel sur deux secteurs différents de la rivière Charente à l'aval d'Angoulème, a pour objectif de quantifier le taux de dénitrification pour les besoins d'un modèle hydrologique nitrates.La méthode de blocage du stade final de la réaction de dénitrification à l'acétylène a permis le dosage du protoxyded'azote à partir de cloches à sédiment et d'un conteneur immergé en pleine eau.Les résultats montrent que, si ce phénomène n'a pas lieu dans la tranche d'eau, la vitesse de dénitrification à l'interfaceeau-sédiment, facteur K exprimé en mg de nitrates dénitrifiés par m2 par jour, peut être considérée comme constante et indépendante des variations en température, en teneurs en nitrates et oxygène dissous de l'interface.Sur un cycle annuel, en l'absence d'influence marquée des paramètres environnementaux, le taux moyen de dénitrification dans la rivière Charente est de 682 mg de NO3- /m2/ j.La comparaison des mesures obtenues par cette méthode à celles évaluées par le calcul (bilan azoté) montre qu'il estpréférable d'estimer le taux de dénitrification par dosage direct plutôt qu'à partir de l'analyse des formes de l'azote(disparition du NO3 - ou défaut du bilan).

The flood pulse regime and the hydrological connectivity determine the lateral bidirectional exchanges of water, chemical compounds, and biota between the river and the floodplain habitats. The primary goal of the present research was to analyze the effect of water flow on macroinvertebrates in two water levels in a lateral connectivity gradient, from the main channel through a connection channel to a permanently connected lake. We tested the hypothesis that the water flow from the main channel to the floodplain habitats during high water level causes a decrease in beta diversity between the sites, increasing similarity in the system. To test this hypothesis, we sampled a river–floodplain–lake system of the Middle Paraná River during two water levels, and analyzed the spatial and temporal turnover of species between sites and habitats. Local physical characteristics, such as depth, benthic particulate organic matter, and grain size of bottom sediments influenced assemblage composition. Taxa richness, density, and Shannon diversity differed among habitats within the river–lake system, but did not show significant differences between water levels. Richness, density, and diversity were higher in the lake and the connection channel than in the Paraná River bank. Beta diversity was significantly higher during high water period. During low water period, benthic assemblage composition was homogenized, as reflected by the lower values of species turnover between the sites situated in the main channel–lake corridor during this phase. The lateral bidirectional exchanges among the habitats are essential for maintaining the specific invertebrate diversity of large river corridors.
