Die Frage, ob die Kultur in Ägypten oder in Asien älter sei und welchen Weg die erste Verbindung zwischen beiden Kulturen genommen hat, ist fast so alt, wie die Beschäftigung mit den Kulturen dieser beiden Völker. Wenn hier von ‘Kultur’ die Rede ist, so ist an Ackerbaukultur zu denken d.h. an die Kultur mit Ackerbau, Viehzucht und Töpferei, jenen drei Elementen, welche noch heute die : Grundlage unserer Kultur bilden. Jene älteren Kulturen, welche als Paläolithikum und Mesolithikum bezeichnet werden, sollen in den folgenden Ausführungen ausser Acht gelassen werden. Von den obengenannten drei Elementen ist bisher vorwiegend oder fast allein das dritte, das der Töpferei, und daneben noch die übrigen Artefakte zur Beantwortung der genannten Frage herangezogen worden. Am wenigsten Beachtung ist den Haustieren hierbei geschenkt worden. Sie sollen nun der Gegenstand der folgenden Untersuchung sein. Wenn auch nicht behauptet werden kann, dass wir zur Zeit mit ihrer Hilfe die Frage restlos lösen können, so können wir doch durch sie vielleicht der Lösung näher geführt werden. Auf welche Weise das geschehen kann, und was uns die Haustierforschung lehrt, soil im Folgenden gezeigt werden.

This paper investigates the relationship between marriage payments, household structure, and domestic labour-supply among the Barma of the Republic of Chad. Recently, Netting has noted that ‘…household composition among farmers varies with the type and amount of labor required for effective crop production’ (1974: 29). Netting is supported by evidence from Europe (Chayanov: 1966; Symes: 1972); Africa (Jones: 1949; Basehart: 1973; Netting: 1968; Reining: 1970; Udo: 1965); Asia (Barth: 1959; Befu: 1968; Leach: 1961; Moerman: 1968; Yang: 1945); South America (Webster: 1973); North America (Bennett: 1969); and the Pacific (Sahlins: 1957). Implicit in this literature is the realization that the household structural types prevalent in societies are those which provide adequate labour supplies in specific ecosystems with particular agrarian technologies. While this research indicates that differing agrarian societies require varying labour supplies, it does not in general show how they achieve these supplies. This paper demonstrates how marriage payments may operate to regulate different aspects of household structure to provide adequate labour to the Barma domestic unit.

At the level of belief Igala religion is rather unsystematic and comprises belief in a number of different spirits whose mutual interrelationship is not very clear. A Western observer would tend to rank the various spirits in terms of their order of magnitude or degrees of power. At the top of the hierarchy would come Ojọ, the supreme being and creator. Another spirit with wide powers in Igala belief is Anẹ, the spirit of the earth. Then there are various oracle spirits known generically as ẹbọ, with the function of giving protection against witchcraft. Their congregation may be large or small according to the success of the spirit in unmasking witches by striking them with illness and making them confess to their wrongdoing. Operating within a more restricted range are the ancestor spirits who are the guardians of well-being in particular clans, lineages, or lineage segments. Within the complex of ancestor worship falls the dyadic relationship between an individual and his personal ọjọ or guardian spirit. The guardian has responsibility for the destiny of its ward. Finally there are fetishes, ode, which are made and worshipped by individuals, and which are believed to ensure success in daily life by affording protection against the misfortunes that witchcraft and sorcery can bring.

As part of a growing working-class movement that sought full legal status as employees in South Africa, stable urban residence and union recognition, female African factory workers became part of a dynamic new labour movement emanating from the shop floor. At the same time, this new role allowed them to challenge patriarchal structures of authority in the factory, the community and the home. This article examines the gender dimension of a bitter inter-union rivalry that beset Durban's Frame textile complex during the early 1980s. With African unions at last recognized by the apartheid state, Frame sought to bolster the strength of a compliant company union in order to thwart the organizing drive of a more confrontational independent union, an affiliate of the newly established Federation of South African Trade Unions (FOSATU). This union rivalry was fought out in the courts as well as inside the factory, in the streets of Durban's townships, and in an African workers’ hostel in nearby Clermont. The legal dispute generated affidavits by women workers attesting to the pressures they faced to join the company union and their reasons for preferring FOSATU. This evidence shows that African women successfully challenged the patriarchal authority of male managers, security personnel, indunas and male co-workers at Frame in order to join an independent union.

La langue mandé ou mandingue est une des plus importantes de l'Afrique Occidentale Française. Les estimations faites il y a dix ans permettent de penser qu'elle était alors parlée comme idiome maternel par environ trois millions de Soudanais, tandis que deux millions d'autres s'en servaient comme de seconde langue. II est probable qu'une révision sérieuse de ces chiffres accuserait une augmentation assez forte des Nègres qui en usent, car elle a une tendance marquée à s'imposer, sous l'influence de la circulation commerciale, dans des régions qui étaient encore fermées au trafic il y a peu d'années, comme par exemple le pays des Bobo au Soudan Français et en Haute Volta, celui des Agni ou des Bété à la Côte d'lvoire.

La société dogon, volontiers qualifiée de traditionnelle par une certaine ethnologie, recèle en elle les germes d'une flexibilité extraordinaire qui lui permet de conserver l'essentiel: son conservatisme apparent et sa dynamique de fond propre. Ainsi, la relative individualisation du système de production maraîchère améliore les carences d'une économie céréalière chroniquement déficitaire; l'intégration au marché est essentielle pour l'amélioration de la situation alimentaire.

L'édifice social dogon résiste encore aux coups de butoir de l'exode définitif, de la monétarisation de l'Islam et du christianisme. Ne voit-on pas revenir parfois ceux qui étaient partis pour de bon? Cʼest le cas de certains des paysans transférés en grand nombre par l'Église, pendant les années de sécheresse, dans le Sud du Mali sur des terres plus fécondes et dans un climat plus humide. Par contre, l'hémorragie de population subie par le Plateau, le processus accéléré d'islamisation (ou de reislamisation) et de christianisation, ainsi que l'importance économique des barrages, ne causent-ils pas un renforcement accéléré du processus de désagrégation du groupe familial d'exploitation? Ce processus serait irréversible, si le maraîchage spéculatif et parfois individuel promu par le manan nʼexistait pas. La famille telle quʼelle est succombera en se transformant, certes, mais elle a encore un certain avenir qui dépend d'une foule de conditions: le contrôle du grain et du bétail par le chef, l'aggravation de la misère urbaine qui renvoie les émigrés dans leurs foyers, la solution des problèmes de conservation et de commercialisation des échalotes, l'ouverture de la Plaine, exutoire pour les cadets en rupture de manan qui, à partir de leur nouveaux villages, font remonter sur le Plateau leurs excédants céréaliers. L'équilibre fragile mis en oeuvre par les Dogon résistera aussi tant que les barrages continuent à arroser ces décors verdoyants, perdus dans ce paysage gréseux.

The oral traditions of the Fipa of south-west Tanzania tell of the advent in their country in pre-colonial times of a prophet called Kaswa. This man is said to have foretold the destruction of the old social order in Ufipa (the name given to the country of the Fipa) and its replacement by the values and technology of a capitalistic society. After making these prophecies Kaswa miraculously disappeared into the ground.

The publication of Professor Robert L. Tignor's article ‘W. R. Bascom and the Ife bronzes' in Africa a few years ago (1990) aroused my interest, as a former student of this anthropologist, as to whether there was any further correspondence beyond what Tignor employed which would illuminate the controversy, as I felt dissatisfied with some of his interpretations. I was fortunate to have had access to Bascom's personal papers, now on file at the Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology (formerly the Robert Lowie Museum of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley), through the kind assistance of Bascom's widow, Berta Bascom, and of Frank A. Norick at the museum. The letters in the file present a somewhat different view of the role of Bascom in the matter than Tignor does. His article relies largely on US State Department archives (which do include some Bascom correspondence) and upon some published articles by Bascom, by E. H. Duckworth, then editor of Nigeria Magazine and also Nigerian Inspector of Education, and by others. The whole business of the two Ife heads which Bascom acquired throws light on the history of the gradually evolving Nigerian colonial government policy toward antiquities.

Toute culture matérielle ou spirituelle comporte d'une part des principes généraux réglant des opérations communes, et d'autre part des applications particulières, ou façons spéciales, infiniment variées.

Nous n'avons pas à revenir sur les principes, les ayant exposés dans notre précédent article sur Assimilation ou Adaptation'. Venons-en donc tout de suite aux applications, et, sans entrer dans l'infini des détails, essayons de tracer les grandes lignes d'une pédagogie africaine, rationnelle et adaptée, telle qu'elle nous est apparue dans les études jusqu'ici publiées, et plus encore dans des observations personnelles, quotidiennes et directes de plus de vingt années d'enseignement et de direction.
