In many applications, such as remote sensing or wave slamming on ships and offshore structures, it is important to have a good model for wave slope. Today, most models are based on the assumption that the sea surface is well described by a Gaussian random field. However, since the Gaussian model does not capture several important features of real ocean waves, e.g. the asymmetry of crests and troughs, it may lead to unconservative safety estimates. An alternative is to use a stochastic Lagrangian wave model. Few studies have been carried out on the Lagrangian model; in particular, very little is known about its probabilistic properties. Therefore, in this paper we derive expressions for the level-crossing intensity of the Lagrangian sea surface, which has the interpretation of wave intensity, as well as the distribution of the wave slope at an arbitrary crossing. These results are then compared to the corresponding intensity and distribution of slope for the Gaussian model.

In this paper a limit theorem is proved that establishes conditions under which the distribution of the difference between the size of the initial event in a random sequence, modeled as a finite point process, and the largest subsequent event approaches a limiting form independent of the size of the initial event. The underlying assumptions are that the sizes of the individual events follow an exponential distribution, that the expected total number of events increases exponentially with the size of the initial event, and that the structure of the sequence approximates that of a Poisson process. Particular cases to which the results apply include sequences of independent and identically distributed exponential variables, and the epidemic-type aftershock (ETAS) branching process model in the subcritical case. In all these cases the form of the limit distribution is shown to be that of a double exponential (type-I extreme value distribution). In sampling from a family of aftershock sequences, with possibly different underlying parameters, the limit distribution is a mixture of such double exponential distributions. The conditions for the simple limit to exist relate to the approximation of the distribution of the number of events by a Poisson distribution. One such condition requires the coefficient of variation (ratio of standard deviation to mean) of the number of events to converge to 0 as the mean increases. The results provide a statistical background to Båth's law in seismology, which asserts that in an aftershock sequence the magnitude of the main shock is commonly around 1.2 units higher than the magnitude of the largest aftershock.

We derive the Sobel–Uppuluri and Galambos-type extensions of the Bonferroni bounds, and further extensions of the same nature, as consequences of a single non-probabilistic inequality. The methodology follows that of Galambos.

We investigate critical Bellman-Harris processes which allow immigration of new particles whenever the population size is 0. Under some special conditions on the immigration component the asymptotic behaviour of the probability of extinction is obtained and limit theorems are also proved.

We supply some relations that establish intertwining from duality and give a probabilistic interpretation. This is carried out in the context of discrete Markov chains, fixing up the background of previous relations established for monotone chains and their Siegmund duals. We revisit the duality for birth-and-death chains and the nonneutral Moran model, and we also explore the duality relations in an ultrametric-type dual that extends the Siegmund kernel. Finally, we discuss the sharp dual, following closely the Diaconis-Fill study.

This paper is concerned with a stochastic model for the spread of an epidemic with a contact tracing scheme, in which diagnosed individuals may name some of their infectious contacts, who are then removed if they have not been already. Traced individuals may or may not also be asked to name their own contacts. The epidemic is studied by considering an approximating, modified birth-death process with intersibling dependencies, for which a threshold parameter and expressions from which extinction probabilities may be calculated are derived. When all individuals can name their contacts, it is shown that this threshold parameter depends on the infectious period distribution only through its mean. Numerical studies show that the infectious period distribution choice can have a material effect on the threshold behaviour of an epidemic, while the dependencies help reduce spread.

We correct a theorem of J. E. Littlewood which gives an approximation for the tail of the binomial distribution. We also present several new approximations which are less accurate but have wider scope. One of them gives an estimate with relative error uniformly O(1/σ) over all values of all the parameters, where σ is the standard deviation.

This paper considers a germ-grain model for a random system of non-overlapping spheres in ℝd for d = 1, 2 and 3. The centres of the spheres (i.e. the ‘germs’ for the ‘grains’) form a stationary Poisson process; the spheres result from a uniform growth process which starts at the same instant in all points in the radial direction and stops for any sphere when it touches any other sphere. Upper and lower bounds are derived for the volume fraction of space occupied by the spheres; simulation yields the values 0.632, 0.349 and 0.186 for d = 1, 2 and 3. The simulations also provide an estimate of the tail of the distribution function of the volume of a randomly chosen sphere; these tails are compared with those of two exponential distributions, of which one is a lower bound and is an asymptote at the origin, and the other has the same mean as the simulated distribution. An upper bound on the tail of the distribution is also an asymptote at the origin but has a heavier tail than either of these exponential distributions. More detailed information for the one-dimensional case has been found by Daley, Mallows and Shepp; relevant information is summarized, including the volume fraction 1 - e-1 = 0.63212 and the tail of the grain volume distribution e-yexp(e-y - 1), which is closer to the simulated tails for d = 2 and 3 than the exponential bounds.

In many service, production, and traffic systems there are multiple types of customers requiring different types of ‘servers’, i.e. different services, products, or routes. Often, however, a proportion of the customers are flexible, i.e. they are willing to change their type in order to achieve faster service, and even if this proportion is small, it has the potential of achieving large performance gains. We generalize earlier results on the optimality of ‘join the shortest queue’ (JSQ) for flexible arrivals to the following: arbitrary arrivals where only a subset are flexible, multiple-server stations, and abandonments. Surprisingly, with abandonments, the optimality of JSQ for minimizing the number of customers in the system depends on the relative abandonment and service rates. We extend our model to finite buffers and resequencing. We assume exponential service. Our optimality results are very strong; we minimize the queue length process in the weak majorization sense.

We consider a general non-linear multivariate time series model which can be parameterized by a finite and fixed number of parameters and which can be rewritten, if necessary, in a form such that the disturbances are stationary martingale differences. Given a series of discrete, equally spaced observations we prove the strong consistency and asymptotic normality of the Gaussian estimators of the parameters, the parameters possibly being subject to non-linear constraints. Because the normal equations are usually highly non-linear it may be difficult to obtain explicit expressions for the Gaussian estimates. To overcome this problem we use a Gauss–Newton type algorithm to obtain a sequence of iterates which converge to, and have the same asymptotic properties as, the Gaussian estimates.

Let Mn denote the size of the largest amongst the first n generations of a simple branching process. It is shown for near critical processes with a finite offspring variance that the law of Mn/n, conditioned on no extinction at or before n, has a non-defective weak limit. The proof uses a conditioned functional limit theorem deriving from the Feller-Lindvall (CB) diffusion limit for branching processes descended from increasing numbers of ancestors. Subsidiary results are given about hitting time laws for CB diffusions and Bessel processes.

Let a Poisson process be observed whose output rate is one of two levels given by the state of an unseen Markov process. If one of the levels is 0, a simple formula is given for the best guess of the state at any instant based on the stream of past Poisson events. In other cases bounds are given for the likelihood ratio of the state probabilities given the event stream.

A new device in the optimization of queuing systems is introduced by using the method of phases. Non-exponential queues under control are considered with respect to the expected discounted reward criterion. For models with hyper-Erlang distributions equivalent phase-type systems are established. Approximation results for Markov decision models allow the extension to the case of general distribution functions. The approach is demonstrated by finding the form of an optimal policy for the GI/M/c queue with customer admission and batch arrival as well as for the GI/M/1 queue with interarrival time control.

For a positive recurrent continuous-time Markov chain on a countable state space, we compare the access time to equilibrium to the hitting time of a particular state. For monotone processes, the exponential rates are ranked. When the process starts far from equilibrium, a cutoff phenomenon occurs at the same instant, in the sense that both the access time to equilibrium and the hitting time of a fixed state are equivalent to the expectation of the latter. In the case of Markov chains on trees, that expectation can be computed explicitly. The results are illustrated on the M/M/∞ queue.

Parallel processing is a way to use resources efficiently by processing several jobs simultaneously on different servers. In a well-controlled environment where the status of the servers and the jobs are well known, everything is nearly deterministic and replicating jobs on different servers is obviously a waste of resources. However, in a poorly controlled environment where the servers are unreliable and/or their capacity is highly variable, it is desirable to design a system that is robust in the sense that it is not affected by the poorly performing servers. By replicating jobs and assigning them to several different servers simultaneously, we not only achieve robustness but we can also make the system more efficient under certain conditions so that the jobs are processed at a faster rate overall. In this paper we consider the option of replicating jobs and study how the performance of different ‘degrees’ of replication, ranging from no replication to full replication, affects the performance of a system of parallel servers.

For so-called simple measures Ξ satisfying ∫ΔΞ(d x)/(x,x)<∞, we characterize the distribution of K via a fixed-point equation.

Criteria are established for a discrete-time Markov process {Xn}n≧0 in Rd to have strictly positive, respectively zero, probability of escaping to infinity. These criteria are mainly in terms of the mean displacement vectors μ(y) = E{Xn+1|Xn = y} – y, and are essentially such that they force a deterministic process w.p.1 to move off to infinity, respectively to return to a compact set infinitely often. As an application we determine of most two-dimensional birth and death processes with rates linearly dependent on the population, whether they can escape to infinity or not.

Recently a number of authors have considered general procedures for coupling stochastic systems. If the individual components of a system, when considered in isolation, are found to possess the simplifying feature of either reversibility, quasireversibility or partial balance they can be coupled in such a way that the equilibrium analysis of the system is considerably simpler than one might expect in advance. In particular the system usually exhibits a product-form equilibrium distribution and this is often insensitive to the precise specification of the individual components. It is true, however, that certain kinds of components lose their simplifying feature if the specification of the coupling procedure changes. From a practical point of view it is important, therefore, to determine if, and then under what conditions, the revelant feature is preserved.

In this paper we obtain conditions under which partial balance in a component is preserved and these often amount to the requirement that there exists a quantity which is unaffected by the internal workings of the component in question. We give particular attention to the components of a stratified clustering process as these most often suffer from loss of partial balance.

In 1991 Perkins [7] showed that the normalized critical binary branching process is a time inhomogeneous Fleming-Viot process. In the present paper we extend this result to jump-type branching processes and we show that the normalized jump-type branching processes are in a new class of probability measure-valued processes which will be called ‘jump-type Fleming-Viot processes’. Furthermore we also show that by using these processes it is possible to introduce another new class of measure-valued processes which are obtained by the combination of jump-type branching processes and Fleming-Viot processes.

We consider a diffusing particle in one dimension that is subject to a time-dependent drift or potential field. A reflecting barrier constrains the particle's position to the half-line X ≥ 0. Such models arise naturally in the study of queues with time-dependent arrival rates, as well as in advection-diffusion problems of mathematical physics. We solve for the probability distribution of the particle as a function of space and time. Then we do a detailed study of the asymptotic properties of the solution, for various ranges of space and time. We also relate our asymptotic results to those obtained by probabilistic approaches, such as central limit theorems and large deviations. We consider drifts that are either piecewise constant or linear functions of time.
