A first-order model is derived for quasisymmetric stellarators where the vacuum field due to coils is dominant, but plasma-current-induced terms are not negligible and can contribute to magnetic differential equations, with $\beta$ of the order of the ratio induced to vacuum fields. Under these assumptions, it is proven that the aspect ratio must be large and a simple expression can be obtained for the lowest-order vacuum field. The first-order correction, which involves both vacuum and current-driven fields, is governed by a Grad–Shafranov equation and the requirement that flux surfaces exist. These two equations are not always consistent, and so this model is generally overconstrained, but special solutions exist that satisfy both equations simultaneously. One family of such solutions is the set of first-order near-axis solutions. Thus, the first-order near-axis model is a subset of the model presented here. Several other solutions outside the scope of the near-axis model are also found. A case study comparing one such solution to a VMEC-generated solution shows good agreement.

Magnetic reconnection is a basic particle acceleration mechanism in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. Two-dimensional models have been critical to understanding the onset of reconnection in laboratory experiments, but are fundamentally limited in diagnosing ion acceleration along open magnetic field lines. These shortcomings have opened the way to three-dimensional (3-D) models of torsional reconnection, where localized rotational perturbations to a fan-spine magnetic null point topology have demonstrated bulk particle acceleration along open magnetic field lines. Previous computational studies of the torsional fan reconnection mode using both solar and laboratory parameters demonstrated collimated jet formation and acceleration along the spine axis, wherein the bulk particle final kinetic energy spectra were shown to fall within a relatively narrow range (${\sim }2$ keV). This paper introduces typical laboratory plasma parameters in the torsional spine mode of 3-D reconnection models to diagnose its efficacy in inducing rapid ion acceleration. Using laboratory-scale length helium plasma parameters typical of capacitive discharges (singly ionized helium), we solve for relativistic particle trajectories using solutions to the steady-state, resistive, kinematic magnetohydrodynamic equations in the fan-spine topology. We find that particle acceleration at the reconnection site is highly dependent on the injection radius, and the peak accelerated particles ($\approx$3 keV) are trapped about the magnetic null point. While a jet is formed by ions injected close to the peak fan plane perturbation radius, their final ion kinetic energies are an order of magnitude lower ($\approx$0.3 keV) than the mirrored particles. Analysing the time dependence of their limited representative energy spectra shows the torsional spine mode particles follow an evolution much different than the narrow spectra of the torsional fan mode. These results have implications for diagnostic expectations of future laboratory plasma experiments designed to induce the torsional spine reconnection mode.

The geostationary orbit (GEO) belt hosts a substantial number of high-value satellites, making the study of autonomous navigation within this area significant. Features of autonomous operations such as patrolling the GEO belt and frequent manoeuvres at a certain location make real-time positioning using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) valuable. This paper studies the performance of positioning with GNSS considering main lobe and side lobe signals at different longitudes in the GEO belt. The research delves into the visibility and Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP) across the GEO belt, analysing the performance of the Global Positioning System (GPS), GLObalnaya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) in Russian, BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), Galileo Navigation Satellite System (Galileo) and multi-systems. In particular, this paper investigates the impact of asymmetric constellations of mixed GEO, Inclined Geosynchronous Orbit (IGSO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites. The study reveals that BDS hybrid constellation provides long-term stable signal coverage over the GEO space above North America and Atlantic Ocean, where GEO signals are more sustainable while IGSO signals have wider coverage. This advantage positions BDS favourably in terms of performance in these regions.

We investigate the unusual H$\alpha$ features found towards the Scutum Supershell via recent arc-minute and arc-second resolution imaging. These multi-degree features resemble a long central spine ending in a bow-shock morphology. We performed a multi–wavelength study in [S II] optical, radio continuum, infrared continuum, Hi, CO, X-ray, and gamma-ray emissions. Interestingly, we found the Galactic worm GW 16.9−3.8 Hi feature appears within the Scutum Supershell, and likely influences the spine morphology. Furthermore, the rightmost edge of the bow-shock H$\alpha$ emission overlaps with [S II] line emission, 4.85 GHz radio, and both 60 and 100 $\mu$m infrared continuum emissions, suggesting some potential for excitation by shock heating. We estimated the photo-ionisation from O-type and B-type stars in the region (including those from the OB associations Ser OB1B, Ser OB2, and Sct OB3) and found that this mechanism could supply the excitation to account for the observed H$\alpha$ luminosity of the spine and bow-shock of $\sim$1–2 $\times 10^{36}\,\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}$ (d/2.5 kpc)$^2$. Recent MHD simulations by Drozdov et al. (2022) demonstrate the potential for supernova events to drive outflow and bow-shock types of features of the same energetic nature and physical scale as the H$\alpha$ emission we observe here. While this clearly requires many supernova events over time, we speculate that one contributing event could have come from the presumably energetic supernova (hypernova) birth of the magnetar tentatively identified in the X-ray binary LS 5039.

Indoor navigation for micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) is challenging in GPS signal-obstructed indoor corridor environments. Position and heading estimation for a MAV is required to navigate without colliding with obstacles. The connected components algorithm and k-means clustering algorithm have been integrated for line and vanishing point detection in the corridor image frames to estimate the position and heading of the MAV. The position of the vanishing point indicates the position of the MAV (centre, left or right) in the corridor. Furthermore, the Euclidean distance between the image centre and mid-pixel coordinates at the last row of the image and the detected vanishing point pixel coordinates in the successive corridor image frames are used to compute the heading of the MAV. When the MAV deviates from the corridor centre, the position and heading measurement can send a suitable control signal to the MAV and align the MAV at the centre of the corridor. When compared with a grid-based vanishing point detection method heading accuracy of ±1⋅5°, the k-means clustering-based vanishing point detection is suitable for real-time heading measurement for indoor MAVs with an accuracy of ±0⋅5°.

Official interpretations of Doppler shifts from the final satellite communications of missing Malaysian Airlines MH370 were based on a motion-decoupled ‘Up-Down model’. That model predicted an uncontrolled high-speed gravitationally accelerated dive following fuel starvation. Here, I challenge that model using a more-realistic motion-coupled ‘Declination model’. Aerial, satellite and underwater searches failed to find the predicted official violent crash-site near the 7th arc. Meticulous re-examination of debris damage by air-crash investigator Larry Vance concluded that the aircraft glide-landed under power with extended wing-flaps. The trailing-edges were then damaged, broke off their mountings, flailing about and retracted along the guides to cause the observed wing-flap damage. Larry's conclusions complement interpretations from the ‘Declination model’ which we demonstrate here with three example flight tracks. Our revised Doppler-shift analyses support the hypothesis of a controlled eastward descent. We conclude that the official theory of fuel starvation and a high-speed dive are fundamentally flawed.

Next generation high-power laser facilities are expected to generate hundreds-of-MeV proton beams and operate at multi-Hz repetition rates, presenting opportunities for medical, industrial and scientific applications requiring bright pulses of energetic ions. Characterizing the spectro-spatial profile of these ions at high repetition rates in the harsh radiation environments created by laser–plasma interactions remains challenging but is paramount for further source development. To address this, we present a compact scintillating fiber imaging spectrometer based on the tomographic reconstruction of proton energy deposition in a layered fiber array. Modeling indicates that spatial resolution of approximately 1 mm and energy resolution of less than 10% at proton energies of more than 20 MeV are readily achievable with existing 100 μm diameter fibers. Measurements with a prototype beam-profile monitor using 500 μm fibers demonstrate active readouts with invulnerability to electromagnetic pulses, and less than 100 Gy sensitivity. The performance of the full instrument concept is explored with Monte Carlo simulations, accurately reconstructing a proton beam with a multiple-component spectro-spatial profile.

Vessel traffic services (VTS) is a marine information exchange system vital for the safety and efficiency of ship traffic within designated regions. The harmonisation, integration and exchange of marine information have emerged as significant components in promoting maritime safety, in line with the concept of e-navigation. This study aimed to analyse the flow of information between VTS areas employing social network analysis to ensure seamless marine information exchange across VTS areas. Information flow was analysed based on data obtained from ships navigating through coastal waters and ports in Korea, revealing that the sea area near Busan New Port exhibited the highest concentration of information flow, while the Tongyoung Coast VTS area represented a critical link in the flow of information. Given its history of marine accidents, the current Masan (Opko) VTS region emerged as a susceptible area. The study provides valuable foundational data for a comprehensive coastal surveillance system.

We demonstrated a method to improve the output performance of a Ti:sapphire laser in the long-wavelength low-gain region with an efficient stimulated Raman scattering process. By shifting the wavelength of the high-gain-band Ti:sapphire laser to the long-wavelength low-gain region, high-performance Stokes operation was achieved in the original long-wavelength low-gain region of the Ti:sapphire laser. With the fundamental wavelength tuning from 870 to 930 nm, first-order Stokes output exceeding 2.5 W was obtained at 930–1000 nm, which was significantly higher than that directly generated by the Ti:sapphire laser, accompanied by better beam quality, shorter pulse duration and narrower linewidth. Under the pump power of 42.1 W, a maximum first-order Stokes power of 3.24 W was obtained at 960 nm, with a conversion efficiency of 7.7%. Furthermore, self-mode-locked modulations of first- and second-order Stokes generation were observed in Ti:sapphire intracavity solid Raman lasers for the first time.

Physics of the plasma rotation driven by biasing in linear traps is analysed for two limiting cases. The first, relevant for traps with low effective viscosity, considers the line-tying effects to be responsible for the drive as well as for the dissipation of the angular momentum. Meanwhile, in long and thin traps with collisional plasma or developed turbulence, the radial transport of the angular momentum becomes its primary loss channel. The momentum flux goes into the scrape-off layer, which makes conditions there partially responsible for the achievable rotation limits.
