Bubble growth, departure and sliding in low-pressure flow boiling has received considerable attention in the past. However, most applications of boiling heat transfer rely on high-pressure flow boiling, for which very little is known, as experimental data are scarce and very difficult to obtain. In this work, we conduct an experiment using high-resolution optical techniques. By combining backlit shadowgraphy and phase-detection imaging, we track bubble shape and physical footprint with high spatial ($6\,\mathrm {\mu }{\rm m}$) and temporal ($33\,\mathrm {\mu }{\rm s}$) resolutions, as well as bubble size and position as bubbles nucleate and slide on top of the heated surface. We show that at pressures above 1 MPa bubbles retain a spherical shape throughout the growth and sliding process. We analytically derive non-dimensional numbers to correlate bubble velocity and liquid velocity throughout the turbulent boundary layer and predict the sliding of bubbles on the surface, solely from physical properties and the bubble growth rate. We also show that these non-dimensional solutions can be leveraged to formulate elementary criteria that predict the effect of pressure and flow rate on bubble departure diameter and growth time.

Rain drops form in clouds by collision of submillimetric droplets falling under gravity: larger drops fall faster than smaller ones and collect them on their path. The puzzling stability of fogs and non-precipitating warm clouds with respect to this avalanche mechanism has been a longstanding problem. How can droplets of diameter around 10 $\mathrm {\mu }$m have a low collision probability, inhibiting the cascade towards larger and larger drops? Here we review the dynamical mechanisms that have been proposed in the literature and quantitatively investigate the frequency of drop collisions induced by Brownian diffusion, electrostatics and gravity, using an open-source Monte Carlo code taking all of them into account. Inertia dominates over aerodynamic forces for large drops, when the Stokes number is larger than $1$. Thermal diffusion dominates over aerodynamic forces for small drops, when the Péclet number is smaller than $1$. We show that there exists a range of size (typically 3–30 $\mathrm {\mu }$m for water drops in air) where neither inertia nor Brownian diffusion are significant, leading to a gap in the collision rate. The effect is particularly important, due to the lubrication film forming between the drops immediately before collision, and secondarily to the long-range aerodynamic interaction. Two different mechanisms regularise the divergence of the lubrication force at vanishing separation: the transition to a non-continuum regime in the lubrication film, when the separation is comparable to the mean free path of air, and the induction of a flow inside the drops due to shear at their surfaces. In the gap between inertia-dominated and diffusion-dominated regimes, dipole–dipole electrostatic interactions becomes the major effect controlling the efficiency of drop collisions.

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD)-induced droplet emission is an efficient method for the production of micron- and submicron-sized droplets in technological applications. Existing studies propose several scaling laws to determine the size of the emitted droplet. However, they have usually focused on the tip streaming phenomena of a droplet when subjected to a uniform electric field. In most applications, a non-uniform distribution of the electric field is created owing to the nozzle-to-plate configuration. Here, we employ an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian method to demonstrate the mechanism of the first droplet emission from an electrified liquid meniscus with a fixed volume hanging at the nozzle tip. The critical condition when tip streaming occurs is determined using our numerical results. A phase diagram in terms of the electric field and initial liquid volume is presented to obtain the commonly used jetting mode. The effects of the liquid volume, electric field strength and electrical conductivity of the liquid on the processes of jet formation and breakup are further investigated. We find a particularly non-monotonic dependence of the size of the emitted droplet on the electrical conductivity. These findings could be useful for generating microdroplets and improving injection frequency in EHD printing technology.

A turbulent two-vortex system (T-2VS) is obtained by inserting analytical model wake vortices into very weak homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT) and by evolving them in time using large-eddy simulation until a turbulent state at statistical equilibrium is reached. The T-2VS is characterised as follows: circulation distribution of the vortices; energy of the mean and fluctuating fields; energy dissipation rate. It is also verified that essentially the same T-2VS is obtained when varying the initial model or initial HIT perturbation. A wall-resolved simulation of the T-2VS further interacting with a smooth ground is then performed at $Re_\varGamma = 2 \times 10^5$; this is $10 \times$ higher than in previous works, which allows us to better capture the high Reynolds number behaviour. The high release height of the T-2VS also ensures a physically correct approach to the ground. The results are compared with the literature and also to what is obtained for the case of non-turbulent vortices interacting with the same ground at the same Reynolds number. The flow topologies are discussed, and significant differences are highlighted regarding the separation of the boundary layer generated at the ground, and the way this secondary vorticity interacts with the primary vortices and makes them decay. The vortex trajectories are also measured, together with their circulation distribution and global circulation evolution, and the differences are discussed.
