  • Sir Cyril Fox (1882–1967) was an archaeologist and later Director of the National Museum of Wales and President of the Museums Association. Having entered Magdalene College, Cambridge as a mature student, his first year dissertation was judged to be more suitable as a PhD thesis, which resulted in him progressing straight to his PhD. His doctoral thesis, reissued here, transformed archaeological thought when it was first published in 1923. In it Fox pioneered the geographical approach to analysing ancient settlement patterns, linking the expansion of human settlement in the Cambridge area from the Neolithic era to the Anglo-Saxon period with favourable environmental conditions. His thesis emphasised the importance of treating archaeological finds as clues to past human settlement instead of being the main focus for archaeological analysis. This approach became the methodological framework for later environmental and landscape archaeology.

  • Sir Henry Fraser Howard (1874–1943) held various positions in the Indian Civil Service from 1897 to his retirement and election in 1923 to a Fellowship of St John's College, where became the Senior Bursar. First published in 1935, this work describes the financial history of the college from its foundation in 1511 until 1926, making full use of the account books, ledgers and other papers lodged in the college archives. Containing detailed analysis of the college's financial transactions, this book provides valuable information on the many and varied changes in financial practice which occurred during the period 1511–1926 and also shows the practical effect of changes and reforms in the University Statutes upon the administration of the college.

  • In the mid-nineteenth century, a royal commission was appointed to investigate 'the state, discipline, studies, and revenues' of Cambridge University, and eventually recommended radical reforms. As part of its brief, it gathered records that had been preserved for centuries as the university evolved. Published in three volumes in 1852 under the title Documents Relating to the University and Colleges of Cambridge, the compilation, much of it in its original Latin, charts the university's emergence as one of the world's leading academic institutions and the challenges it faced along the way. This material remains a valuable resource for historians of British education and society. Volume 1 covers the period to the mid-sixteenth century and contains, among other historical gems, an abstract of records spanning nine monarchies, and an earlier compilation ordered by Henry VIII in the 37th year of his reign.

  • James Bass Mullinger (1834–1917) was a University Lecturer in History and Librarian at St. John's College, Cambridge. His monumental History of the University was the standard history of the University at the turn of the twentieth century. For most of his career Mullinger worked on the project, alongside his academic duties and his many articles, the first volume appearing in 1873 and the last in 1911. His extraordinary range of knowledge and the ambition of the work make this an important landmark in the history of universities in Britain. This volume covers the political and religious turmoil of the Civil War and the Restoration, ending symbolically with the decline of the Cambridge Platonists, the major philosophical movement of the seventeenth century. Mullinger describes the role the University played in the rise and fall of Buckingham and of Cromwell, and explores its early connections with America.

  • First published in 1854, this is the first of a two-volume collection of historical sources relating to the University of Cambridge during the religious upheavals from the Elizabethan period to the Restoration. This volume covers the period 1570–90, and documents the long-running debate between the Puritans in the University Senate, who sought to regulate forms of worship, and the heads of colleges, who accepted the new University Statutes of 1570. It also reveals other areas of controversy including religious tests on graduation, dress, and even public bathing.   • Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, was founded in 1352 by the religious Guilds of Corpus Christi and the Blessed Virgin Mary, making it the only college in Oxford or Cambridge to be established by the town's citizens. Robert Masters (1713–1798), a fellow of Corpus and member of the Society of Antiquaries, published this history in 1753. Divided into two parts, the work gives a full account of the college's establishment. The first section explains the role of the guilds and lists the college's early benefactors and college masters from the foundation to Masters' own day. The second section, organised alphabetically, focuses on the most distinguished members of the college, with brief descriptions of them. This comprehensive and illustrated account of the college's foundation and development to the eighteenth century will appeal to anyone interested in the history of Cambridge University and its colleges.

  • The historian and writer Thomas Fuller (1608–1661) published his 11-volume Church-History of Britain in 1655, together with an appendix volume, the History of the University of Cambridge Since the Conquest. A stand-alone edition of this appendix was prepared with corrections and clarifications by Marmaduke Prickett, chaplain of Trinity College and Thomas Wright, the prolific author of books on the middle ages, and appeared in 1840. This historic account is now republished, offering detailed and lively insights into the university's origins, roots and traditions. It also provides an informed commentary, sometimes biting, sometimes fantastic, on the university's complex relationship with the church, Oxford and the town authorities of Cambridge.   • This record of the Statutes of Cambridge University, compiled by the then University Registrary, John Neville Keynes (father of the economist John Maynard Keynes), and published in 1914, was intended as a statement of the legal instruments which controlled the organisation and day-to-day running of the university. Following the Royal Commission of inquiry into the universities of Oxford and Cambridge begun in 1850, a succession of Acts and Orders in Council, beginning with the Cambridge University Act of 1856, began to modernise the ancient rules by which the university and colleges had previously governed themselves, and to introduce new subjects, such as law, history, oriental languages and engineering, into the curriculum. Although the statutes have been much altered since then, the form of government of the university which they embodied still exists as a framework today.

It resulted from a thorough inquiry 'into the State, Discipline, Studies, and Revenues of the University and Colleges of Cambridge' overseen by distinguished Victorian figures including the Bishop of Chester, George Peacock, Sir John F. W. Herschel, Sir John Romilly and Adam Sedgwick. It includes details relating to the foundation and constitution of the University; employed positions, from Chancellor to Senate members; academic degrees offered; professorships and faculty boards; financial particulars, such as tuition fees, fellowships, and revenues; and facilities, including colleges, laboratories, museums, libraries, hostels and the University Press. This comprehensive account of the material and human assets of the University of Cambridge during the nineteenth century sheds light on the educational reforms which were then gathering pace.   • This volume contains five pamphlets which illustrate the world in which Charles Darwin moved in Cambridge, and the slow development of life and earth sciences as subjects of academic study. (Darwin himself was officially following a course of study which would fit him to become an Anglican parson). The first pamphlet (from 1821) is a proposed series of lectures on geology by Adam Sedgwick, who taught Darwin the rudiments of the subject during a tour of north Wales. The next two are botany courses proposed by John Stevens Henslow, the mentor and close friend who first suggested that Darwin should go as naturalist on the Beagle voyage. Henslow read extracts of Darwin's letters to him to a meeting of the Cambridge Philosophical Society and published them at his own expense (the fourth pamphlet). The final pamphlet is an impassioned plea from Henslow for support for a new University Botanic Garden.

  • Containing an introductory essay on ancient gems, J. H. Middleton's work of 1892 catalogues the extensive and fascinating collection of engraved gems at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Middleton, who was a Professor of Fine Art and Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, describes how the collection was acquired by the Reverend S. S. Lewis on his frequent visits to Italy, Greece and more distant Oriental countries. The catalogue demonstrates that the gems are more remarkable for their interesting subjects than for any exceptional beauty as works of art. The reader is shown how the gems represent important works of Greek sculpture, present examples of the work of Italian Renaissance artists, and illustrate myths and rituals of ancient times. The book will be of interest to students of glyptic art, and anyone interested in classical learning, the development of Christianity and the Renaissance of classical art.

  • James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps (1820–1889) was a Shakespeare scholar, archaeologist and controversialist with wide antiquarian interests. In 1842, while Librarian of Jesus College, Cambridge, he published The Jokes of the Cambridge Coffee-Houses in the Seventeenth Century, which he described as a collection of early anecdotes 'selected from various Jest Books' which 'serve to show the state of this class of literature during that period'. In this volume it is paired with a pamphlet, The Fresher's Don'ts, written by 'A Sympathiser (B. A.)', (probably A. J. Storey) and first published in the 1890s. This edition was printed in 1913 by Redin and Co. of Trinity Street (with advertisements for Redin's and other Cambridge firms' goods and services at the beginning and the end). This light-hearted guide to student etiquette before the cataclysm of the First World War gives insights into a way of life which was about to vanish forever.
