Cambridge University was founded soon afterwards and celebrated its octocentenary in 2009.   • Charles Astor Bristed (1820–1874) was an American scholar and author, and the first American writer to defend American English spelling. Having graduated from Trinity College in 1845 he published this account of his experiences at the university in 1852 to provide accurate, first-hand information for Americans about study in an English university, with the intention of starting a debate over the inclusion of aspects of English higher education in the American system. Volume 1 contains his recollections of his time in Cambridge as an undergraduate, with detailed descriptions of daily life, examinations, lectures and activities outside academia. Written for those with no experience of the university, this volume provides a valuable insight into the daily life of a student at Cambridge in the middle of the nineteenth century while also providing explanations for the aspects of the institution which to the outsider might seem strange.

  • Professor F. W. Maitland was the foremost Victorian scholar on English legal history, and Mary Bateson a Cambridge medieval historian. This 1901 volume was edited for the Corporation of Cambridge and the Cambridge Antiquarian Society. It provides a transcript and translation of the royal charters issued to the borough of Cambridge between the twelfth and the seventeenth centuries. Maitland lays stress on the considerable independence the medieval borough had. It was largely self-governing, royal charters bestowing or confirming liberties rather than regulating the town governance or providing a constitution. However, there were some limitations, chiefly relating to justice, for which royal permission was needed. It was not until the late seventeenth century that royal authority began to tighten its control of borough affairs. The introduction explains the conventions of such charters, and how the reader should interpret the information contained therein. A valuable source of local history with wider significance.

  • First published in 1854, this is the second of a two-volume collection of historical sources relating to the University of Cambridge during the religious upheavals from the Elizabethan period to the Restoration. This volume covers the period 1590–1661, and documents the long-running debate between the Puritans in the University Senate and their more liberal opponents. It also reveals other areas of concern which still resonate today, including smoking and the treatment of 'vagrants'. Letters and diary entries provide additional insights into less contentious aspects of 'the manners and pursuits of the University' at the time. The book will be of interest to historians of the seventeenth century and its turbulent religious currents, the English Civil War and its aftermath, and to historians of education.

  • 'Grace books' were the volumes in which scribes recorded decisions of the administration of the University of Cambridge during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Many of the 'graces' concern the conferral of degrees on individuals, but others refer to more general University business including appointment of teachers and preachers, leaves of absence, inventories and financial records, and the resolution of disputes. Grace Book B, Part 2 covers the years from 1511 to 1544. This transcription was first published in 1905 with an introduction by Mary Bateson of Newnham College which explains the terminology and the administrative systems underlying it, and the changes they underwent during this period. The Latin documents transcribed in this publication constitute a valuable source for those researching British history and institutions in the early Tudor period, and this reissue will make them readily available to scholars today.

  • The Athenae Cantabrigienses was the most ambitious of several large writing projects undertaken by Charles Henry Cooper, a keen historian, successful lawyer and town clerk of Cambridge in the mid-nineteenth century. He enlisted the help of his elder son, Thompson Cooper, for this book, a collection of carefully researched biographies of distinguished figures with Cambridge connections, inspired by Anthony Wood's Athenae Oxonienses (1692). Two volumes were published during Cooper Senior's lifetime, but only 60 pages of the third volume (ending in 1611) appeared in print, and he died leaving an enormous quantity of notes. Even in its incomplete state, the work contains about seven thousand biographies; their subjects include clergymen, military commanders, judges, artists, scholars and benefactors of the University. Volume 1, published in 1858, covers the period 1500–1585. This reissue also includes the original prospectus for the project, which was financed by private subscription.

  • This early twentieth-century guide to the geography and geology, fauna and flora of Cambridgeshire was written during a period when natural history played a particularly prominent role in British cultural life. The heart of the book is a comprehensive survey of the diversity of animal life in the region, focussing particularly on the insect orders. It also includes chapters on vertebrate palaeontology and archaeology. Two maps show locations of discovery of ancient skulls, as well as important ancient roads that cross the county. There are additional botanical and geological maps. The book provides a valuable baseline for present-day studies of biodiversity or the effects of climate change, and will also appeal to local enthusiasts with an interest in environmental history.

Roberts, a senior officer of Cambridge University Press as Secretary to the Press Syndicate, wrote several works for Cambridge, including a history of the Press and this handy visitors' guide to the University. After its first publication in 1934, this book went through a number of editions and was thoroughly updated after the Second World War. Roberts introduces the reader to the University from within, covering its history, its finest buildings, the way the University was run and the daily life of the undergraduate. The informal style makes this a highly entertaining introduction to the Cambridge of the 1930s and 40s: the entrance examination, the midnight curfew for undergraduates, the then new University Library, and the systems of governance.   • 'Grace books' were the volumes in which scribes recorded decisions of the administration of the University of Cambridge during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Grace Book Γ, first published in 1908, is the third of the Grace Books, Books A and B having been published in three volumes during the preceding decade. While Grace Books A and B included details of financial transactions, this volume focuses on the conferral of degrees by examination and incorporation, and on various dispensations. This compilation, with a substantial introduction and index by William George Searle and J. W. Clark, constitutes a valuable source for those researching British history and institutions in the early Tudor period, and this reissue will make them readily available to scholars today.

  • This revised edition of Adam Wall's 1798 guide to the formal ceremonies of the University of Cambridge – written by Henry Gunning (1764–1854), at the time Senior Esquire Bedell, and published in 1828 – was intended to help 'that very numerous Class, who are desirous of proceeding to their degrees, but are utterly at a loss what steps to take for that purpose'. It goes through the academic year, from Michaelmas Day to the 'Public Commencement' in July, explains the procedure for electing or appointing the university officers, from the Member of Parliament to the 'School-keeper and Bell-ringer', and lists the various fees (including Stamp Duty) payable by the students before proceeding to their degrees. Gunning expressed 'sincere acknowledgements to the Syndics of the Press for their liberality in defraying the expenses of this publication', testifying to close co-operation between the Press and the University on this fascinating project.

  • Charles Henry Cooper charted over half a millennium of life at Cambridge in the five volumes of Annals of Cambridge. Cooper practised as a solicitor in Cambridge, and was also town clerk from 1849 until his death in 1866. He was a keen historian and devoted a great deal of time to archival research, particularly into local history. Drawing on extensive public and private records, including petitions, town treasurers' accounts, restoration records, death certificates, legal articles and letters to ruling royalty, Cooper compiled a comprehensive chronological history of Cambridge, documenting the 'city of scholars' through its tumultuous political and religious growing pains. It was published in parts, in the face of considerable opposition from the university authorities, but was eventually acclaimed as an authoritative account. This second volume, published in 1843, covers the Elizabethan period, from 1546–1601, and includes the founding of the University Press.

  • First published in 1934, this book is a history of Christ's College, Cambridge, from its foundation in 1437, through its relocation to its current site, up to the charter of 1505. The original college, founded by parochial rector William Byngham, was named God's House and occupied a site which is now part of King's College. It was given its first royal licence in 1446 and moved to its present site in 1448. The college received its present name and charter when it was refounded in 1505 by Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of King Henry VII. This book recounts the history of Christ's during this period, using archival evidence and illustrations to offer a fascinating picture of the less well known early stages of the college's development.

  • The celebrated classicist Richard Bentley (1662–1742) was elected Master of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1700. He corresponded with many respected thinkers and scholars, based in Paris, Naples, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg and elsewhere around the world. These two volumes of his correspondence, first published in 1842 and now reissued, provide fascinating insights into Bentley's thought and the intellectual world he inhabited. Volume 2 contains letters, mostly in Latin, written and received by Bentley between 1712 and 1740, two years before his death at the age of 81. They appear in chronological order, and shed light on relationships between scholars of different generations and nationalities, and often opposing religious, moral, political, and literary opinions. Exceptionally noteworthy in this volume is Bentley's correspondence relating to his controversial tenure as Master of Trinity College.

  • In the mid-nineteenth century, a royal commission was appointed to investigate 'the state, discipline, studies, and revenues' of Cambridge University, and eventually recommended radical reforms. As part of its brief, it gathered records that had been preserved for centuries as the university evolved. Published in three volumes in 1852 under the title Documents Relating to the University and Colleges of Cambridge, the compilation, much of it in its original Latin, charts the university's emergence as one of the world's leading academic institutions and the challenges it faced along the way. This material remains a valuable resource for historians of British education and society. Volume 2 includes the original charters for seven of the oldest colleges as well as the 1573 will of college founder Dr John Caius.
