We present necessary and sufficient conditions for an operator of the type sum of squares to be globally hypoelliptic on $T \times G$, where T is a compact Riemannian manifold and G is a compact Lie group. These conditions involve the global hypoellipticity of a system of vector fields on G and are weaker than Hörmander’s condition, while generalizing the well known Diophantine conditions on the torus. Examples of operators satisfying these conditions in the general setting are provided.

We provide a criterion for a coherent sheaf to be an Ulrich sheaf in terms of a certain bilinear form on its global sections. When working over the real numbers, we call it a positive Ulrich sheaf if this bilinear form is symmetric or Hermitian and positive-definite. In that case, our result provides a common theoretical framework for several results in real algebraic geometry concerning the existence of algebraic certificates for certain geometric properties. For instance, it implies Hilbert’s theorem on nonnegative ternary quartics, via the geometry of del Pezzo surfaces, and the solution of the Lax conjecture on plane hyperbolic curves due to Helton and Vinnikov.

For positive integers $n$ and $k$, let $r_{k}(n)$ denote the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of $k$ squares, where representations with different orders and different signs are counted as distinct. For a given positive integer $m$, by means of some properties of binomial coefficients, we derive some infinite families of congruences for $r_{k}(n)$ modulo $2^{m}$. Furthermore, in view of these arithmetic properties of $r_{k}(n)$, we establish many infinite families of congruences for the overpartition function and the overpartition pair function.

We show that the set of real polynomials in two variables that are sums of three squares of rational functions is dense in the set of those that are positive semidefinite. We also prove that the set of real surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ whose function field has level 2 is dense in the set of those that have no real points.

In a paper from 1976, Berg, Christensen, and Ressel prove that the closure of the cone of sums of squares $\sum{\mathbb{R}{{\left[ \underline{X} \right]}^{2}}}$ in the polynomial ring $\mathbb{R}\left[ \underline{X} \right]\,:=\,\mathbb{R}\left[ {{X}_{1}},\,.\,.\,.\,,\,{{X}_{n}} \right]$ in the topology induced by the $~{{\ell }_{1}}$-norm is equal to $\text{Pos}\left( {{\left[ -1,\,1 \right]}^{n}} \right)$, the cone consisting of all polynomials that are non-negative on the hypercube ${{\left[ -1,\,1 \right]}^{n}}$. The result is deduced as a corollary of a general result, established in the same paper, which is valid for any commutative semigroup. In later work, Berg and Maserick and Berg, Christensen, and Ressel establish an even more general result, for a commutative semigroup with involution, for the closure of the cone of sums of squares of symmetric elements in the weighted $~{{\ell }_{1}}$-seminorm topology associated with an absolute value. In this paper we give a new proof of these results, which is based on Jacobi’s representation theorem from 2001. At the same time, we use Jacobi’s representation theorem to extend these results from sums of squares to sums of $2d$-powers, proving, in particular, that for any integer $d\,\ge \,1$, the closure of the cone of sums of $2d$-powers $\sum \mathbb{R}{{\left[ \underline{X} \right]}^{2d}}$ in the $\mathbb{R}\left[ \underline{X} \right]$ topology induced by the $~{{\ell }_{1}}$-norm is equal to $\text{Pos}\left( {{\left[ -1,\,1 \right]}^{n}} \right)$.

In Gun and Ramakrishnan [‘On special values of certain Dirichlet L-functions’, Ramanujan J.15 (2008), 275–280], we gave expressions for the special values of certain Dirichlet L-function in terms of finite sums involving Jacobi symbols. In this note we extend our earlier results by giving similar expressions for two more special values of Dirichlet L-functions, namely L(−1,χm) and L(−2,χ−m′), where m,m′ are square-free integers with m≡1 mod 8 and m′≡3 mod 8 and χD is the Kronecker symbol . As a consequence, using the identities of Cohen [‘Sums involving the values at negative integers of L-functions of quadratic characters’, Math. Ann.217 (1975), 271–285], we also express the finite sums with Jacobi symbols in terms of sums involving divisor functions. Finally, we observe that the proof of Theorem 1.2 in Gun and Ramakrishnan (as above) is a direct consequence of Equation (24) in Gun, Manickam and Ramakrishnan [‘A canonical subspace of modular forms of half-integral weight’, Math. Ann.347 (2010), 899–916].

Let R(n,θ) denote the number of representations of the natural number n as the sum of four squares, each composed only with primes not exceeding nθ/2. When θ>e−1/3 a lower bound for R(n,θ) of the expected order of magnitude is established, and when θ>365/592, it is shown that R(n,θ)>0 holds for large n. A similar result is obtained for sums of three squares. An asymptotic formula is obtained for the related problem of representing an integer as the sum of two squares and two squares composed of small primes, as above, for any fixed θ>0. This last result is the key to bound R(n,θ) from below.

We present two infinite families of generalized Lambert series identities, and deduce several known identities from them. They include an identity due to M. Jackson, a corollary of Ramanujan's $_1\psi_1$-summation formula, and a recent identity of G. E. Andrews, R. P. Lewis and Z.-G. Liu.
