This article analyses an overlooked element of public service marketisation, examining overseas export activity within healthcare and criminal justice. It explores the drivers, strategies, opportunities and risks of such activities, and the differences across policy sector. Focussing on contrasting experiences is an opportunity to understand the complex and differentiated operational and structural environments within which this form of “public entrepreneurialism” is expressed. There is a gap in our understanding of such developments and their promotion within the context of austerity. The paper discusses the implications of the entrepreneurial state for public sector reputation.

Sensory trademarks present a compelling case in which to explore the senses as “containers of possibility,” and this article explores the emergence and logic of sensory trademarks from a legal and marketers’ perspective. Using sensory trademark cases from the United States, I suggest that the current socio-legal environment opens a conversation about what I would call sensory capitalism—the monetization of the senses rather than the propertization of the senses—that requires intellectual property law to properly function. I argue that the sensory model espoused by the trademarking of the senses is one of the mass sensorium, whereby the “audience” universally recognizes marks as designating a particular source or origin of goods. The mass sensorium offers something quite novel, however, because embedded in it is the (corporate) promise of a lingua franca that valorizes all of the senses and generates a type of mediated affect that is shared.

The article assesses the role of the military in the global dissemination and exchange of music in the long nineteenth century. It shows that, first, Western military music and its instrumentation were influenced by cross-cultural encounters, primarily with the Ottoman Empire. Second, I argue that educational professionalization and instrumental standardization were important vehicles for the global rise of the military band beyond its original purpose. Third, tracing the transnational careers of some German military musicians will make evident that competition with respect to national prestige, rising imperialism, and the increasing commercialization of musical life were crucial features of the spread of military musicians all over the world, making them cultural brokers not only of military music.

The Korean native chicken (KNC) is believed to have existed in the Korean Peninsula more than 1,400 years ago. Since then, KNC have been bred only by private farmers in rural areas of Korea. In 1994, a KNC conservation program was established by the Korean government and, as a result, five lines were restored. KNC are considered to have a unique taste and texture that is more attractive to Korean consumers than meat from commercial broilers. However, the price of KNC is relatively high, which is mainly due to the breed's low growth rate, hence the limitations for industrial applications. In addition, their unique taste and texture in comparison with that of other broilers has been evaluated by scientists over the past few years. The general composition, physiochemical traits, content of taste-active and endogenous bioactive compounds and sensory quality of KNC meat, as well as breeding history are reviewed in this paper. The information from this review can be used for the development of commercial KNC breeds and can be applied to models for the commercialisation of native chicken breeds in developing countries.

We are living in an era of market-driven, globalised economies characterised by reduced public investments in what, until now, have been considered public goods and services. In Australia and elsewhere, education, and higher education in particular, has seen steady declines in government funding. This has prompted universities to become much more entrepreneurial and to seek out new funding opportunities to support their teaching and research activities. This paper reflects on the personal and professional dilemmas and challenges we faced as two early career environmental education researchers who were commissioned to undertake research for a private corporation. As a result of issues raised during this process, we engaged in a critical reflection of our perceptions and feelings about our involvement in the project. In essence, dilemmas and challenges centred around two issues: (1) control/ ownership of the research; and (2) the clash between corporate and university values. This paper explores these issues and suggests that greater mindfulness on the part of individual researchers as well as the development of better university-corporate partnership processes and protocols might provide useful starting points for overcoming such dilemmas and for moving forward with university-corporate research partnerships.

Commercialisation activities combining the discoveries of one occupational group, such as scientists, with the commercial skills of managers involve interactions across occupational and organisational cultures. This article explores the challenges posed by working across occupational and organisational boundaries, and describes management techniques developed informally in four Australian organisations to address barriers to knowledge transfer. It identifies the existence of Knowledge-stewarding Communities of Practice (CoP) that span organisational boundaries and impact commercialisation outcomes. It also presents recommendations for management practice based upon diversity management and innovation theories. The context of the study is Australian hybrid industry-research organisations composed of academic, government and industry personnel. Semi-structured interviews with a total of twenty scientists, engineers and managers focused on their experiences of knowledge sharing across organisational and occupational cultures, and methods used to manage these boundaries. The existence and efficacy of boundary-crossing individuals and boundary object strategies are explored. A generic process management model of innovation is extended to acknowledge and accommodate occupational and organisational cultural proclivities towards exploration or exploitation, and to stimulate future research.

Introduction. Au Bénin, le régime alimentaire des populations est déficient en vitamines et minéraux; la consommation de fruits et légumes pourrait constituer un moyen efficace pour éviter les carences nutritionnelles et prévenir les maladies chroniques. Dans un tel contexte, il importait d’étudier le volume de consommation des fruits et légumes au Bénin et d’évaluer les liens existant entre leur disponibilité, leur prix et leur acquisition par les ménages. Nous nous sommes intéressés à l’autoconsommation des fruits produits dans une région du Bénin, le plateau d’Allada. Matériel et méthodes. Les différentes espèces fruitières cultivées sur le plateau d’Allada ont été identifiées. Leur disponibilité a été évaluée et mise en relation avec leur consommation en s’appuyant sur une enquête régionale portant sur un échantillon de 120 chefs d’exploitation agricole répartis sur quatre communes de la région. Résultats. L’autoconsommation nette des fruits cultivés localement par chacun des ménages producteurs a été évaluée à 31,6 kg par an. Parmi les 15 espèces fruitières recensées, les plus consommées se sont révélées être la mangue (13,3 kg par personne et par an, 42 %), la banane (7,6 kg par personne et par an, 18 %), l’orange (8 %) et l’avocat (7 %). Aucune corrélation significative n’a été établie entre la consommation et la production des fruits. En revanche, une très forte corrélation a été mise en évidence entre la production et la quantité de fruits commercialisée, et une corrélation négative significative a été trouvée entre la quantité de fruits produits et leur prix de vente. Le bilan entre production et consommation a fait apparaître une marge positive pour l’orange, l’ananas, le tangelo et la papaye, ce qui signifie que ces productions sont avant tout marchandes; seule une part résiduelle de ces récoltes est réservée à l’autoconsommation. La plus grande partie des autres productions fruitières consommées par les ménages du plateau d’Allada doivent être importée. Discussion. Sur le plateau d’Allada, malgré une forte production de certains fruits, leur consommation par les ménages agricoles est faible et peu diversifiée par rapport à leur disponibilité et se situe bien en deçà des normes recommandées par l’OMS. Il sera nécessaire de mieux étudier les déterminants d’une telle distorsion pour mieux guider les politiques publiques, ainsi que les choix des producteurs et des consommateurs, afin d’assurer un meilleur régime alimentaire aux populations locales.

The paper discusses two reforms in Ontario's long-term care. The first is the commercialization of home care as a result of the implementation of a “managed competition” delivery model. The second is the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's privileging of “health care” over “social care” through changes to which types of home care and home support services receive public funding. It addresses the effects of these reforms on the state–non-profit relationship, and the shifting balance between public funding of health and social care. At a program level, and with few exceptions, homemaking services have been cut from home care, and home support services are more medicalized. With these changes, growing numbers of people no longer eligible to receive publicly funded home care services look for other alternatives: they draw available resources from home support, they draw on family and friend networks, they hire privately and pay out of pocket, they leave home and enter an institution, or they do without.

Introduction. Cropping systems of the mango trees in West Africa are very varied. Each one of them developed in a specific context where the agronomical practices and the varietal composition of the orchards contribute to the diversity observed. The study undertaken should make it possible to better understand the influence of the potential outlets on the evolution of the regional mango production. Principal cropping systems. In the studied area, the main part of the mango orchards has less than 10 ha; their production is extensive and uses few inputs. They belong in majority to growers whose principal activity is centred on agriculture. Certain plantations close to 100 ha, found in Senegal or in Côte.d'ivoire, belong to exporters and profit from a technical assistance. Agronomical practices. The study of the agronomical practices used in mango orchards of West Africa made it possible to analyze the aspects of seedling production, choice of the site, installation of the orchard before plantation, plantation and maintenance of the trees, fire protection, water management, as well as the effect of the export market on the varietal choice and the varietal offer during a harvest campaign. Diseases and enemies. An inventory of the pathological problems and physiological diseases likely to devalue the production were carried out. Marketing. This part made it possible to distinguish intercontinental exports, requiring a specific harvest and conditioning organization, and the local, national and regional markets. Processing. Today, the share of transformed mangos into West Africa uses only one negligible proportion of the total production. Conclusion and prospects. Beside a traditional production which presents signs of brittleness appear modern orchards. More than a necessary intensification of the orchards, a rationalization of the agronomical practices, plant health protection, fruit harvest or handling are impossible to circumvent. Downstream, the export path is confronted with a fast evolution of the exogenous regulations, based on qualitative and sanitary standards increasingly strict.

Dans la région étudiée, l’essentiel des vergers de manguiers exploités a moins de 10 ha ; leur production est extensive et utilise peu d’intrants. Ils appartiennent en majorité à des planteurs dont l’activité principale est centrée sur l’agriculture. Certaines plantations proches de 100 ha, trouvées au Sénégal ou en Côte d’Ivoire, appartiennent à des exportateurs et bénéficient d’un encadrement technique. Les itinéraires techniques. L’étude des itinéraires techniques utilisés en vergers de manguiers en Afrique de l’Ouest a permis d’analyser les aspects de production de plants, choix du site, aménagement du verger avant plantation, plantation et entretien des arbres, protection contre les incendies, alimentation hydrique, ainsi que l’effet du marché d’exportation sur le choix variétal et l’offre variétale au cours d’une campagne de récolte. Maladies et ennemis. Un inventaire des problèmes pathologiques et des maladies physiologiques susceptibles de dévaloriser la production a été effectué. Commercialisation. Cette partie a permis de distinguer les exportations intercontinentales, nécessitant une organisation spécifique de la récolte et du conditionnement, et les marchés locaux, nationaux et régionaux. La transformation. Aujourd’hui, la part des mangues transformées en Afrique de l’Ouest n’utilise qu’une proportion infime de la production totale. Conclusion et perspectives. À côté d’une production traditionnelle qui présente des signes de fragilité apparaissent des vergers modernes. Plus qu’une intensification des vergers, par ailleurs nécessaire, une rationalisation des pratiques agronomiques, de la protection phytosanitaire, de la récolte ou de la manipulation des fruits est incontournable. En aval, la filière d’exportation se trouve confrontée à une évolution rapide des réglementations exogènes, basées sur des normes qualitatives et sanitaires de plus en plus strictes.

Introduction. Les structures de première mise en marché tentent de planifier les plantations de leurs apporteurs pour faciliter l'adéquation, au moment des récoltes, entre l'offre en produits et les demandes de leurs clients. L'objectif de l'article est d'analyser les dispositifs de planification des plantations sur deux espèces, la salade et la pêche, et de montrer comment ils tiennent compte des contraintes agronomiques propres à chaque espèce et des débouchés des structures de mise en marché. Dispositif d'étude. Des enquêtes ont été réalisées auprès des techniciens de neuf structures de mise en marché du sud-est de la France, ainsi que d'agriculteurs approvisionnant ces structures. Résultats. Dans le cas de la salade, toutes les structures enquêtées influent sur le choix des sous-espèces et des dates de plantation. Cela leur permet de contrôler l'étalement des récoltes et la variabilité des lots de produits, mais avec des degrés variables suivant les structures et leurs débouchés. Dans le cas de la pêche, elles tentent d'influencer les arboriculteurs sur le choix des sous-espèces et des variétés, mais, concrètement, cela se traduit presque essentiellement par une réduction du nombre de variétés cultivées. Discussion et conclusion. L'étude permet de comparer la planification des plantations pour une espèce annuelle et une espèce pérenne : intérêt, degré d'efficacité tant économique qu'agronomique, difficultés rencontrées par les agriculteurs dans leurs exploitations.
