Adsorption of Co2+ and Cd2+ on Wyoming montmorillonite was studied by the batch equilibration technique, as a function of salt concentration (0.01–4 M NaCl and NaNO3), pH (5.0–6.5), adsorbate concentration (trace-10−2 moles/liter), and presence of complexing ions. Comparison was made with the adsorbability of Sr2+, known to follow simple ion-exchange equations. The distribution coefficients for Co and Cd in noncomplexing media varied with salt concentration (from ∼500 liters/kg in 0.01 M Na+ to ∼10 liters/kg in 1 M Na+; pH = 5), but to a lesser extent than that of Sr. Adsorbability varied also with pH (∼1 order of magnitude/pH unit), especially at high ionic strength, compared to a negligible pH effect on Sr. The distribution coefficients of Cd and Co decreased with increasing loading on the clay at a very low percentage (0.2%) of the ion-exchange capacity compared to Sr (20%). These data suggest two classes of sites participating in the adsorption of Cd and Co.

The adsorbability of Cd in highly concentrated chloride solution (>1 M) was less than 1 liter/kg, presumably because of the chloride complex formation. This effect increased with increasing pH. The low adsorbability of Cd on montmorillonite from concentrated NaCl solution is promising with respect to its use as a tracer for monitoring flow through formations containing montmorillonite.

A laboratory study of cadmium exchangeability revealed large differences in extractable cadmium which are dependent on the exchange solution being utilized. The standard exchange solutions employed in this study were: N NaNO3, N NaOAc, N NH4OAc, NCaCl2, and 2N CaCl2, in order of increasing Cd removal. An interpretation of the chemical behavior of Cd and an experiment with mixed sodium nitrate and acetate solutions suggest that cadmium carbonate, octavite, was precipitated when the sediments were saturated with Cd prior to the exchange experiments and that the quantities of Cd recovered in the acetate solutions were erroneously high because of the dissolution of the carbonate material. Dissolution of solid phases, the lack of pH buffering, and the possible formation of a complex hydroxyl chloride salt also made the Cd values obtained with the chloride solutions too high. Sodium nitrate exchange solutions minimize these problems and are thought to best represent the exchangeable cadmium in the sediment.

113Cd solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to identify possible Cd2+ adsorption sites in montmorillonite. The montmorillonite was treated with 0.1 and 1 M CdCl2 aqueous solutions and samples with 13 and 8-µm particle size were used. The data are consistent with a two-site model for sorption of Cd2+ on montmorillonite. Cd2+ is localized in the montmorillonite in two different sites: 1) in the interlayers as hydrated Cd2+ and 2) on the external surface, probably with few H2O molecules hydrating to it. Cadmium is also adsorbed as CdCl+ in the interlayer. Treatment with a 0.1 M CdCl2 solution produces adsorption of free Cd2+ in the interlayer whereas treatment with 1 M CdCl2 resulted in adsorption of Cd2+ in both the interlayer and on surface sites and the adsorption of CdCl+ in the interlayer. A larger particle size favors Cd2+ adsorption on the external surface whereas a smaller particle size favors Cd2+ adsorption in the interlayer.

Electroacoustic measurements at 1 MHz, using the Electro-Sonic Amplitude (ESA), on a kaolinite suspension provide a ready method for following the adsorption of hydrolyzable metal ions onto the clay surface. Co2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ ions show similar behavior: The initially negative surface becomes less negative, approaches zero, and may become positive at pH values around neutral, depending on the initial metal concentration. At higher pH, electrokinetic potential goes through a maximum. If the surface has become positive, it becomes less so; and at still higher pH values it may become negative again, depending on the metal ion concentration. The behavior can be interpreted using the model proposed by James and Healy.

As a consequence of treatments with glycine solutions, glycine molecules enter the interlayer of both Ca- and Cd-rich montmorillonite. Measurements of d value suggest that at low glycine concentration (0.01 and 0.1 M glycine solutions) a “flat” arrangement of the glycine molecules occurs in the interlayer. In contrast, intercalation of more than one monolayer of glycine molecules occurs for the montmorillonite treated with a higher concentration of glycine (1 M glycine solution).

Interlayer complexation of glycine occurs only for the Cd-rich form of montmorillonite, whereas no complexation is observed for Ca-rich montmorillonite. Both nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) results suggest that the adsorbed glycine, which fully protonates in the interlayer of montmorillonite to give the GlyH2− species, interacts with the interlayer Cd2+ to form the CdGlyx complex mainly through the carboxylate group. The interlayer cadmium, present as both Cd2+ and CdCl−, is complexed by the ligand glycine. In contrast, the cadmium adsorbed on the external surfaces of montmorillonite does not interact with the ligand. Complexation of CdCl+ only occurs for large amounts of adsorption of glycine (e.g., for samples treated with 1 M glycine solution).

Adsorption-desorption of Cd to Ca montmorillonite (SAz-1) was studied at concentrations ranging from 44.5 to 266.8 μM. An adsorption model was employed in the analysis of the data. The procedure consists of solving the electrostatic Gouy-Chapman equations and calculating adsorbed amounts of the cations as the sum of the cations residing in the double-layer region, and the cations chemically bound to the surface, in a closed system. The model also accounts explicitly for cation complexation in solution. The model yields good predictions for the adsorbed amounts of Cd, Ca and Mg, by employing binding coefficients from previous studies for the divalent cations and for Na, K and CdCl+. The model calculations also yield good predictions for the apparent hysteresis observed in the adsorbed amounts of Cd after each of 3 cycles of desorption. The apparent hysteresis is explained by the reduction in the total concentrations of Ca and Mg in desorption cycles, and the corresponding increase in the magnitude of the surface potential. Our estimates indicate that adsorption of Cd is mostly to planar, rather than edge sites of the clay mineral.

The structural and physical effects of partially substituting Cd for Fe in goethite have been investigated. The solubility of Cd2+ in goethite is ∼10 mol.%, i.e. Fe0.905Cd0.095OOH. The structures of the substituted goethites have been refined, using the Rietveld method, from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. There is a progressive increase in the size of the unit-cell parameters and unit-cell volume, upon the incorporation of much larger Cd2+ ion (0.95 Å) compared with Fe3+ (0.645 Å) in the goethite structure, together with a reduction in crystallinity. Transmission electron microscopy measurements confirm the crystallite size decreases as the Cd2+ content increases in goethite structure.

The adsorption of metals by clay minerals is a complex process involving different mechanisms, and is controlled by different variables which can interact. The aim of this work was to study the retention mechanisms of Cd on illite. We obtained Cd adsorption isotherms at constant pH, adsorption edges as a function of pH, adsorption isotherms at 5, 25 and 45°C (pH = 7), and response surfaces of the simultaneous effect of pH, initial concentration, ionic strength, and temperature on the retention of Cd on illite. Below pH 6, adsorption of Cd on illite is via ion exchange with H3O+ and Na+ ions which saturate the exchange sites, the exchange with Na+ being the main mechanism between pH 4.5 and 6.0. For pH values >6, the effect of ionic strength on the amount of Cd2+ retained decreased with pH, being negligible at pH 8; the proton stoichiometry was greater than for pH values <6 and an increase in the temperature favored the retention of Cd. These facts are compatible with a more specific process involving hydrolyzed species, in which Cd can associate with illite as an inner sphere complex.

Siderophores are low molecular weight organic ligands synthesized by aerobic microorganisms to acquire Fe. In addition to Fe(III), siderophores may complex other metals such as Pb and Cd. This study compared the effects of the trihydroxamate siderophores desferrioxamine-B (DFO-B), desferrioxamine-D1 (DFO-D1), desferrioxamine-E (DFO-E), and the monohydroxamate siderophore-like ligand acetohydroxamic acid (aHA) on Pb and Cd (except for DFO-E) adsorption to kaolinite (KGa-1b) at pH 4.5 to 9, in 0.1 M NaClO4, at 22°C, in the dark. At pH >6, all of the studied ligands decreased Pb adsorption to kaolinite: aHA by 5–40% and DFO-B, DFO-D1 and DFO-E by 30–75%; the greater effects were at higher pH. The studied ligands decreased Cd adsorption to kaolinite at pH >8: aHA by 5–20% and the trihydroxamates by as much as 80%. We also observed enhancement of Pb adsorption in the presence of DFO-B at pH ≈5–6.0, probably due to adsorption of the doubly positively charged H3Pb (DFO-B)2+ complex, although spectroscopic evidence is needed.

There is a clear gap in the understanding of the desorption patterns of metals sorbed on soils and clays, despite their importance in the mobility, transport and fate of metals in natural environments. In this study, we investigated the desorption behavior of Cd, Zn and Pb sorbed on montmorillonite (Mt) and on hydroxyaluminum (HyA)- and hydroxyaluminosilicate (HAS)-Mt complexes. At pH 6.5, 2.5 g L–1 of HyA-Mt and HAS-Mt sorbed almost all of the 10–6 M Cd, Zn or Pb, while Mt under the same condition sorbed ~48, 49 and 55% of the added Cd, Zn and Pb, respectively. Based on pH50 values, the selectivity of metal sorption on Mt was Pb > Zn > Cd, and on the complexes, it was Pb ≫ Zn = Cd. In general, larger fractions of sorbed metals were remobilized from Mt than from the complexes. Again, in comparison with Pb, larger fractions of sorbed Cd and Zn were remobilized from different clays. Reducing the pHs of the equilibrium sorption systems from a fixed point (6.5) to different points (6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.5, and 4.0) and from different points (6.5, 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, and 4.5) to a fixed point (4.0) both yielded hysteretic metal desorption patterns. The fractions of Cd and Zn desorbed through Na and Cu exchange from the clays, especially from the complexes, were very different, indicating the existence of cation exchangeable metal sorption sites of weak and strong affinities on the complexes. Based on the EDTA-extractable fractions of Cd and Zn from HAS–Mt and HyA-Mt, it appeared that HyA–metal bonds are stronger than the HAS–metal bonds. Compared with other agents, acetic acid remobilized the highest fractions of all metals irrespective of the type of clays, with a concomitant release of Al or Al + Si. The Pb-HyA/HAS-Mt bonds were, however, still much too strong to be broken substantially by this mechanism. The results accomplished in this study suggest further attention to the fundamental understanding of the mobility, fate, bioavailability and toxicity of the concerned metals in soils and related environments.

Toxic pollutants such as diclofenac (DCF) and cadmium(II) have been detected together in various water sources; these compounds have adverse effects on human health. The objective of the present study was to investigate the sorption of DCF and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions on an organobentonite. The organobentonite was synthesized by adsorbing the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) on bentonite; this was designated OBHDTMA. The sorption of DCF and Cd(II) on OBHDTMA and of Cd(II) on OBHDTMA saturated with DCF (OBHDTMA-DCF) were then studied. The bentonite, OBHDTMA, and OBHDTMA-DCF were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The capacity of OBHDTMA for adsorbing DCF depended on the solution pH, ionic strength, and temperature. The effect of pH on the adsorption capacity of OBHDTMA was anomalous because, depending on the concentration of DCF at equilibrium, the adsorption capacity increased or decreased by raising the pH. The capacity of OBHDTMA was enhanced by increasing the temperature from 15 to 35°C and by reducing the ionic strength from 1 to 0.01 N. The dependence of the adsorption capacity on the operating conditions was explained by considering the interactions between the DCF in solution and the surface of OBHDTMA. The maximum sorption capacity of the OBHDTMA for DCF was 388 mg/g at T = 25°C and at pH = 7 and was comparable to those of carbon materials. The adsorption of DCF on OBHDTMA was scarcely reversible, but the desorption percentage increased with pH. The adsorption of DCF on OBHDTMA was due to partition and electrostatic attraction. More Cd(II) was adsorbed on OBHDTMA-DCF than on OBHDTMA and this was influenced by the loading of DCF on the OBHDTMA-DCF. The OBHDTMA-DCF may be used to remove Cd(II) from water solution.

A significant area of late Neoproterozoic–early Cambrian seafloor hosted a ferruginous to euxinic condition as a result of expanded primary productivity-driven pumping of organic matter into subsurface water column and weak water column mixing in the concomitant sea. However, the cause and extent of increased marine primary productivity during this time interval remain unknown. To estimate the primary productivity in a late Neoproterozoic sea, this study investigated the Sirbu Shale, Vindhyan Supergroup, for trace elements, organic carbon isotopes and total organic carbon (TOC). Among the trace elements, cadmium (Cd), known for extremely low concentration in crustal rocks but higher abundance in biogenic organic matter, was the key parameter in the palaeoproductivity estimation. The Cd enrichment in the Sirbu Shale samples is comparable to that in modern marine sediments of the oxygen minimum zones in Chilean margins, Arabian Sea and Gulf of California characterized by high primary productivity and seasonal upwelling. In terms of Cd enrichment, the lower section of the Sirbu Shale was deposited under suboxic conditions, while the upper section was deposited under a relatively less reducing condition. Cd/Mo ratios > 0.36 in the shale sample indicate that the palaeoproductivity was strongly influenced by the nutrient supply through sea-shelf upwelling. Using non-detrital enrichment of Cd in Sirbu Shale samples, we calculated that the TOC exported to the floor of Sirbu Shale palaeodepositional setting through primary productivity ranged from 0.71 to 10.16%.

Immunological and oxidative alterations have been reported around calving in dairy cattle. In addition, the levels of heavy metals rise in the blood around parturition, which might affect body systems. Therefore, in this Research Communication we evaluate the changes in whole blood lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd) around calving, in comparison with the beginning of the dry period, and assess the correlations of these elements with immunological factors and oxidative markers. Samples were collected from 30 clinically healthy dairy cows in the early dry period (−6 w), one week before expected calving (−1 w), and one week postpartum (+1 w). The highest concentrations of Pb, As, and Cd were observed at −1 w and all the three elements decreased after parturition leading to significantly lower As and Cd, compared to −1 w (P < 0.05). The lowest levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, immunoglobulin G, interleukin 4, interleukin 10 and haptoglobin were found at −1 w simultaneous with the highest measures of the heavy metals, with tumor necrosis factor-alpha being significantly lower at this time (P < 0.05). At −6 w, As concentration was significantly (P < 0.05) correlated negatively (r = −0.366) and positively (r = 0.417) with total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde, respectively. Furthermore, at −1 w Pb and As had significant (P < 0.05) negative correlations with interferon gamma (r = −0.502) and interleukin 4 (r = −0.483), respectively. After parturition, Pb was observed to be negatively correlated with total antioxidant capacity (r = −0.538, P < 0.05). The observed results revealed that the alterations in immunological factors and antioxidant capacity around parturition were correlated with Pb and As levels.

Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd), Ag6(Cu4Cd2)Sb4S13, has been approved as a new mineral species by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association using samples from Rudno nad Hronom, Slovak Republic. It occurs as anhedral grains up to 30 μm in size, steel-grey to black in colour, with a metallic lustre, in association with greenockite and other tetrahedrite-group minerals [argentotetrahedrite-(Zn) and tetrahedrite-(Zn)], earlier base-metal minerals, Ag sulfides and sulfosalts (acanthite, pyrargyrite and polybasite) and later galena. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is isotropic, grey in colour, with a creamy tint and rapidly (tens of minutes) tarnishes to orange–brown. Reflectance data for Commission on Ore Mineralogy (COM) wavelengths in air are [λ (nm), R (%)]: 470, 30.4; 546, 30.3; 589, 30.3; and 650, 28.7. The chemical formula of the samples studied, recalculated on the basis of ΣMe = 16 atoms per formula unit, is: (Ag3.28Cu2.72)Ʃ6.00[Cu4(Cd1.68Fe0.27Zn0.16)]Ʃ6.11(Sb3.71As0.15)Ʃ3.86S12.79. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is cubic, I$\bar{4}$3m, with a = 10.65(2) Å, V = 1208(4) Å3 and Z = 2. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is isotypic with other members of the tetrahedrite group. The structural relationship between argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) and other members of the freibergite series are discussed and previous findings of this species are briefly reviewed.

Tennantite-(Cd), Cu10Cd2As4S13, was approved as a new mineral species from the Berenguela mining district, Pacajes Province, La Paz, Bolivia. It occurs as black metallic anhedral grains, up to 1 mm across, associated with baryte, montmorillonite and secondary Cd-sulfates (aldridgeite, niedermayrite and voudourisite). In reflected light, tennantite-(Cd) is isotropic and grey with brownish tints. Reflectance data for the four COM wavelengths in air are [λ (nm): R (%)]: 470: 30.0; 546: 30.1; 589: 28.2; and 650: 25.8. Electron microprobe analysis gave (in wt.% – average of 11 spot analyses): Cu 40.56(32), Ag 0.05(5), Fe 0.04(1), Zn 1.91(63), Cd 11.32(1.09), Hg 0.04(7), As 19.04(43), S 26.78(30), total 99.74(53). On the basis of ΣMe = 16 atoms per formula unit (apfu), the empirical formula of tennantite-(Cd) is Cu9.98Ag0.01Cd1.57Zn0.46Fe0.01As3.97S13.05. Tennantite-(Cd) is cubic, I$\bar{4}$3m, with unit-cell parameters a = 10.3088(2) Å, V = 1095.53(6) Å3 and Z = 2. Its crystal structure was refined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to a final R1 = 0.0152 on the basis of 359 unique reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo) and 22 refined parameters. Tennantite-(Cd) is isotypic with other tetrahedrite-group minerals. Its crystal-chemistry is discussed and previous findings of Cd-rich tetrahedrite-group minerals are briefly reviewed.

To determine the association between hearing loss and environmental Pb, Cd and Se exposure, a total of 1503 American adults from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2011–2012) were assessed. The average of four audiometric frequencies (0·5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz) was used to identify speech-frequency hearing loss (SFHL), while the average of 3 audiometric frequencies (3, 4 and 6 kHz) was used to identify high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL). HFHL adjusted OR determined by comparing the highest and lowest blood Pb and Cd quartiles were 1·98 (95 % CI: 1·27, 3·10) and 1·81 (95 % CI: 1·13, 2·90), respectively. SFHL was significantly associated with blood Cd with the OR = 2·42 for the highest quartile. When further stratified by age, this association appeared to be limited to adults aged 35–52 years. After stratified by gender, except for Pb and Cd, we observed that blood Se showed a dose-dependent association with SFHL in men. In women, only Cd showed a dose-dependent association with speech and high-frequency hearing loss. Hearing loss was positively associated with blood levels of Pb and Cd. Additionally, our study provided novel evidence suggesting that excessive Se supplement would increase SFHL risk in men.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that poses a threat to the health of humans and animals. It can cause serious damage to the small intestine, which is the main absorption site of Cd and the primary target organ after oral administration. Our previous study found that zinc chelate of hydroxy analogue of methionine (Zn-HMTB), a new type of feed additive, decreased Cd accumulation in the liver and kidneys. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Zn-HMTB on Cd absorption and Cd-induced toxicity in the small intestine of piglets. Twenty-four piglets (Landrace × Large White, 13.22 ± 0.58 kg BW) were randomly divided into four dietary treatment groups: basal diet, and diets containing 30 mg/kg Cd from CdCl2 and 0, 100 or 200 mg/kg Zn from Zn-HMTB. The experiment lasted 27 days. The feed intake and final BW of each piglet were recorded at the end of the experiment. Gastrointestinal (GI) tract tissue and samples of liver, kidney, spleen, heart, lung and longissimus muscle tissue and faeces were collected. The concentrations of Cd and metal trace elements in the GI tract and organs were analysed, as was the relative messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of inflammatory cytokines and metal element transporters in the small intestine, and epithelial apoptosis in the small intestine. The results showed that, compared with Cd-treated piglets, piglets in the Zn-HMTB and Cd cotreatment groups had less Cd deposition in the stomach, ileum, caecum, colon, liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, heart and muscles (P < 0.05), and lower Cd concentrations in faeces (P < 0.05), suggesting that Zn-HMTB increased Cd absorption and the excretion of Cd in other forms (possibly urine). Zinc chelate of hydroxy analogue of methionine increased Zn deposition in the jejunum and the relative mRNA expression of divalent metal transporters 1 and zinc transporter 5 in the duodenum (P < 0.05), indicating that Zn-HMTB may promote the absorption and transportation of Cd and Zn together by upregulating metal element transporters. Competition between Zn and Cd may be responsible for accelerating Cd excretion. Furthermore, Zn-HMTB reduced Cd-induced apoptosis of enterocytes and inflammatory stimuli in the small intestine, suggesting that Zn-HMTB reduced Cd-induced toxicity to the small intestine. These results suggest that Zn-HMTB can be helpful in decreasing Cd accumulation in the GI tract and organs of piglets and relieving Cd-induced toxicity to the small intestine but cannot reduce the absorption of Cd.
