A linear equation $E$ is said to be sparse if there is $c\gt 0$ so that every subset of $[n]$ of size $n^{1-c}$ contains a solution of $E$ in distinct integers. The problem of characterising the sparse equations, first raised by Ruzsa in the 90s, is one of the most important open problems in additive combinatorics. We say that $E$ in $k$ variables is abundant if every subset of $[n]$ of size $\varepsilon n$ contains at least $\text{poly}(\varepsilon )\cdot n^{k-1}$ solutions of $E$. It is clear that every abundant $E$ is sparse, and Girão, Hurley, Illingworth, and Michel asked if the converse implication also holds. In this note, we show that this is the case for every $E$ in four variables. We further discuss a generalisation of this problem which applies to all linear equations.

Fix a prime $p\geq 11$. We show that there exists a positive integer $m$ such that any subset of $\mathbb {F}_p^n\times \mathbb {F}_p^n$ containing no nontrivial configurations of the form $(x,y)$, $(x,y+z)$, $(x,y+2z)$, $(x+z,y)$ must have density $\ll 1/\log _{m}{n}$, where $\log _{m}$ denotes the $m$-fold iterated logarithm. This gives the first reasonable bound in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for a two-dimensional four-point configuration in any setting.

Given a fixed graph $H$ and a constant $c \in [0,1]$, we can ask what graphs $G$ with edge density $c$ asymptotically maximise the homomorphism density of $H$ in $G$. For all $H$ for which this problem has been solved, the maximum is always asymptotically attained on one of two kinds of graphs: the quasi-star or the quasi-clique. We show that for any $H$ the maximising $G$ is asymptotically a threshold graph, while the quasi-clique and the quasi-star are the simplest threshold graphs, having only two parts. This result gives us a unified framework to derive a number of results on graph homomorphism maximisation, some of which were also found quite recently and independently using several different approaches. We show that there exist graphs $H$ and densities $c$ such that the optimising graph $G$ is neither the quasi-star nor the quasi-clique (Day and Sarkar, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 35(1), 294–306, 2021). We also show that for $c$ large enough all graphs $H$ maximise on the quasi-clique (Gerbner et al., J. Graph Theory 96(1), 34–43, 2021), and for any $c \in [0,1]$ the density of $K_{1,2}$ is always maximised on either the quasi-star or the quasi-clique (Ahlswede and Katona, Acta Math. Hung. 32(1–2), 97–120, 1978). Finally, we extend our results to uniform hypergraphs.

Given $\alpha \gt 0$ and an integer $\ell \geq 5$, we prove that every sufficiently large $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices in which every two vertices are contained in at least $\alpha n$ edges contains a copy of $C_\ell ^{-}$, a tight cycle on $\ell$ vertices minus one edge. This improves a previous result by Balogh, Clemen, and Lidický.

A subset Y of the general linear group $\text{GL}(n,q)$ is called t-intersecting if $\text{rk}(x-y)\le n-t$ for all $x,y\in Y$ , or equivalently x and y agree pointwise on a t-dimensional subspace of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ for all $x,y\in Y$ . We show that, if n is sufficiently large compared to t, the size of every such t-intersecting set is at most that of the stabiliser of a basis of a t-dimensional subspace of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ . In case of equality, the characteristic vector of Y is a linear combination of the characteristic vectors of the cosets of these stabilisers. We also give similar results for subsets of $\text{GL}(n,q)$ that intersect not necessarily pointwise in t-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ and for cross-intersecting subsets of $\text{GL}(n,q)$ . These results may be viewed as variants of the classical Erdős–Ko–Rado Theorem in extremal set theory and are q-analogs of corresponding results known for the symmetric group. Our methods are based on eigenvalue techniques to estimate the size of the largest independent sets in graphs and crucially involve the representation theory of $\text{GL}(n,q)$ .

We show that any set of distinct homotopy classes of simple closed curves on the torus that pairwise intersect at most k times has size $k+O(\sqrt k \log k)$ . Prior to this work, a lemma of Agol, together with the state of the art bounds for the size of prime gaps, implied the error term $O(k^{21/40})$ , and in fact the assumption of the Riemann hypothesis improved this error term to the one we obtain $O(\sqrt k\log k)$ . By contrast, our methods are elementary, combinatorial, and geometric.

Bollobás and Riordan, in their paper ‘Metrics for sparse graphs’, proposed a number of provocative conjectures extending central results of quasirandom graphs and graph limits to sparse graphs. We refute these conjectures by exhibiting a sequence of graphs with convergent normalized subgraph densities (and pseudorandom C4-counts), but with no limit expressible as a kernel.

We prove a number of results related to a problem of Po-Shen Loh [9], which is equivalent to a problem in Ramsey theory. Let a = (a1, a2, a3) and b = (b1, b2, b3) be two triples of integers. Define a to be 2-less than b if ai < bi for at least two values of i, and define a sequence a1, …, am of triples to be 2-increasing if ar is 2-less than as whenever r < s. Loh asks how long a 2-increasing sequence can be if all the triples take values in {1, 2, …, n}, and gives a log* improvement over the trivial upper bound of n2 by using the triangle removal lemma. In the other direction, a simple construction gives a lower bound of n3/2. We look at this problem and a collection of generalizations, improving some of the known bounds, pointing out connections to other well-known problems in extremal combinatorics, and asking a number of further questions.

A k-permutation family on n vertices is a set-system consisting of the intervals of k permutations of the integers 1 to n. The discrepancy of a set-system is the minimum over all red–blue vertex colourings of the maximum difference between the number of red and blue vertices in any set in the system. In 2011, Newman and Nikolov disproved a conjecture of Beck that the discrepancy of any 3-permutation family is at most a constant independent of n. Here we give a simpler proof that Newman and Nikolov’s sequence of 3-permutation families has discrepancy $\Omega (\log \,n)$. We also exhibit a sequence of 6-permutation families with root-mean-squared discrepancy $\Omega (\sqrt {\log \,n} )$; that is, in any red–blue vertex colouring, the square root of the expected squared difference between the number of red and blue vertices in an interval of the system is $\Omega (\sqrt {\log \,n} )$.

A k-uniform tight cycle $C_s^k$ is a hypergraph on s > k vertices with a cyclic ordering such that every k consecutive vertices under this ordering form an edge. The pair (k, s) is admissible if gcd (k, s) = 1 or k / gcd (k,s) is even. We prove that if $s \ge 2{k^2}$ and H is a k-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least (1/2 + o(1))|V(H)|, then every vertex is covered by a copy of $C_s^k$. The bound is asymptotically sharp if (k, s) is admissible. Our main tool allows us to arbitrarily rearrange the order in which a tight path wraps around a complete k-partite k-uniform hypergraph, which may be of independent interest.

For hypergraphs F and H, a perfect F-tiling in H is a spanning collection of vertex-disjoint copies of F. For $k \ge 3$, there are currently only a handful of known F-tiling results when F is k-uniform but not k-partite. If s ≢ 0 mod k, then $C_s^k$ is not k-partite. Here we prove an F-tiling result for a family of non-k-partite k-uniform hypergraphs F. Namely, for $s \ge 5{k^2}$, every k-uniform hypergraph H with minimum codegree at least (1/2 + 1/(2s) + o(1))|V(H)| has a perfect $C_s^k$-tiling. Moreover, the bound is asymptotically sharp if k is even and (k, s) is admissible.

Motivated by problems in percolation theory, we study the following two-player positional game. Let Λm×n be a rectangular grid-graph with m vertices in each row and n vertices in each column. Two players, Maker and Breaker, play in alternating turns. On each of her turns, Maker claims p (as yet unclaimed) edges of the board Λm×n, while on each of his turns Breaker claims q (as yet unclaimed) edges of the board and destroys them. Maker wins the game if she manages to claim all the edges of a crossing path joining the left-hand side of the board to its right-hand side, otherwise Breaker wins. We call this game the (p, q)-crossing game on Λm×n.

Given m, n ∈ ℕ, for which pairs (p, q) does Maker have a winning strategy for the (p, q)-crossing game on Λm×n? The (1, 1)-case corresponds exactly to the popular game of Bridg-it, which is well understood due to it being a special case of the older Shannon switching game. In this paper we study the general (p, q)-case. Our main result is to establish the following transition.

• If p ≥ 2q, then Maker wins the game on arbitrarily long versions of the narrowest board possible, that is, Maker has a winning strategy for the (2q, q)-crossing game on Λm×(q+1) for any m ∈ ℕ.

• If p ≤ 2q − 1, then for every width n of the board, Breaker has a winning strategy for the (p, q)-crossing game on Λm×n for all sufficiently large board-lengths m.

Our winning strategies in both cases adapt more generally to other grids and crossing games. In addition we pose many new questions and problems.

We investigate a covering problem in 3-uniform hypergraphs (3-graphs): Given a 3-graph F, what is c1(n, F), the least integer d such that if G is an n-vertex 3-graph with minimum vertex-degree $\delta_1(G)>d$ then every vertex of G is contained in a copy of F in G?

We asymptotically determine c1(n, F) when F is the generalized triangle $K_4^{(3)-}$ , and we give close to optimal bounds in the case where F is the tetrahedron $K_4^{(3)}$ (the complete 3-graph on 4 vertices).

This latter problem turns out to be a special instance of the following problem for graphs: Given an n-vertex graph G with $m> n^2/4$ edges, what is the largest t such that some vertex in G must be contained in t triangles? We give upper bound constructions for this problem that we conjecture are asymptotically tight. We prove our conjecture for tripartite graphs, and use flag algebra computations to give some evidence of its truth in the general case.

The theta graph ${\Theta _{\ell ,t}}$ consists of two vertices joined by t vertex-disjoint paths, each of length $\ell $ . For fixed odd $\ell $ and large t, we show that the largest graph not containing ${\Theta _{\ell ,t}}$ has at most ${c_\ell }{t^{1 - 1/\ell }}{n^{1 + 1/\ell }}$ edges and that this is tight apart from the value of ${c_\ell }$ .

The maximum size of an r-uniform hypergraph without a Berge cycle of length at least k has been determined for all k ≥ r + 3 by Füredi, Kostochka and Luo and for k < r (and k = r, asymptotically) by Kostochka and Luo. In this paper we settle the remaining cases: k = r + 1 and k = r + 2, proving a conjecture of Füredi, Kostochka and Luo.

The induced removal lemma of Alon, Fischer, Krivelevich and Szegedy states that if an n-vertex graph G is ε-far from being induced H-free then G contains δH(ε) · nh induced copies of H. Improving upon the original proof, Conlon and Fox proved that 1/δH(ε)is at most a tower of height poly(1/ε), and asked if this bound can be further improved to a tower of height log(1/ε). In this paper we obtain such a bound for graphs G of density O(ε). We actually prove a more general result, which, as a special case, also gives a new proof of Fox’s bound for the (non-induced) removal lemma.

We provide a deterministic algorithm that finds, in ɛ-O(1)n2 time, an ɛ-regular Frieze–Kannan partition of a graph on n vertices. The algorithm outputs an approximation of a given graph as a weighted sum of ɛ-O(1) many complete bipartite graphs.

As a corollary, we give a deterministic algorithm for estimating the number of copies of H in an n-vertex graph G up to an additive error of at most ɛnv(H), in time ɛ-OH(1)n2.

Szemerédi's regularity lemma and its variants are some of the most powerful tools in combinatorics. In this paper, we establish several results around the regularity lemma. First, we prove that whether or not we include the condition that the desired vertex partition in the regularity lemma is equitable has a minimal effect on the number of parts of the partition. Second, we use an algorithmic version of the (weak) Frieze–Kannan regularity lemma to give a substantially faster deterministic approximation algorithm for counting subgraphs in a graph. Previously, only an exponential dependence for the running time on the error parameter was known, and we improve it to a polynomial dependence. Third, we revisit the problem of finding an algorithmic regularity lemma, giving approximation algorithms for several co-NP-complete problems. We show how to use the weak Frieze–Kannan regularity lemma to approximate the regularity of a pair of vertex subsets. We also show how to quickly find, for each ε′>ε, an ε′-regular partition with k parts if there exists an ε-regular partition with k parts. Finally, we give a simple proof of the permutation regularity lemma which improves the tower-type bound on the number of parts in the previous proofs to a single exponential bound.

We give an asymptotic formula for the minimum number of edges contained in triangles among graphs with n vertices and e edges. Our main tool is a generalization of Zykov's symmetrization method that can be applied to several graphs simultaneously.

A long-standing conjecture of Richter and Thomassen states that the total number of intersection points between any n simple closed Jordan curves in the plane, so that any pair of them intersect and no three curves pass through the same point, is at least (1−o(1))n 2.

We confirm the above conjecture in several important cases, including the case (1) when all curves are convex, and (2) when the family of curves can be partitioned into two equal classes such that each curve from the first class touches every curve from the second class. (Two closed or open curves are said to be touching if they have precisely one point in common and at this point the two curves do not properly cross.)

An important ingredient of our proofs is the following statement. Let S be a family of n open curves in ℝ2, so that each curve is the graph of a continuous real function defined on ℝ, and no three of them pass through the same point. If there are nt pairs of touching curves in S, then the number of crossing points is $\Omega(nt\sqrt{\log t/\log\log t})$ .

Let Qd denote the hypercube of dimension d. Given d ⩾ m, a spanning subgraph G of Qd is said to be (Qd, Qm)-saturated if it does not contain Qm as a subgraph but adding any edge of E(Qd)\E(G) creates a copy of Qm in G. Answering a question of Johnson and Pinto [27], we show that for every fixed m ⩾ 2 the minimum number of edges in a (Qd, Qm)-saturated graph is Θ(2d).

We also study weak saturation, which is a form of bootstrap percolation. A spanning subgraph of Qd is said to be weakly (Qd, Qm)-saturated if the edges of E(Qd)\E(G) can be added to G one at a time so that each added edge creates a new copy of Qm. Answering another question of Johnson and Pinto [27], we determine the minimum number of edges in a weakly (Qd, Qm)-saturated graph for all d ⩾ m ⩾ 1. More generally, we determine the minimum number of edges in a subgraph of the d-dimensional grid Pkd which is weakly saturated with respect to ‘axis aligned’ copies of a smaller grid Prm. We also study weak saturation of cycles in the grid.
