Postemergence applications of nicosulfuron and primisulfuron may injure corn plants depending on the level of terbufos present in the young corn plants from application of terbufos for corn rootworm control. Field studies were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate the interaction of nicosulfuron and primisulfuron with terbufos and to relate terbufos levels, detected with a rapid detection kit, to injury. Terbufos was applied in-furrow at 0, 186, 375, and 750 g ai/100 m of row. Nicosulfuron was applied at 35 and 70 g ai/ha and primisulfuron at 40 and 80 g ai/ha when the corn was at the four-leaf stage. Prior to herbicide application, both fresh and frozen plant samples from each treatment were subjected to terbufos analysis. The correlation coefficient for terbufos detected in the shoot extract with observed herbicide injury to corn was r = 0.89 in 1992 and r = 0.94 in 1993. Injury ratings showed a greater correlation with terbufos levels than did corn shoot height. Thus, the rapid detection kit provided an efficient method to determine whether an injurious terbufos-herbicide interaction might occur.

Our purpose is to discuss the impact of alien plants on rangeland ecosystems of the Great Basin in terms of their effects on biological functions. The sagebrush/bunchgrass ranges of western North America are used as a model ecosystem for the impact of alien plants. Alien weed species have been introduced in successive waves, with the success of each new introduction dependent on how well adapted to the environment and how competitive the new weed is with those previously introduced. Annual species have been successful across extensive areas of Great Basin rangelands. Biennial and short- and long-lived perennial introductions have been restricted to much more specific habitats. Alien plants impact rangelands through stand renewal and successional processes. Alien weeds can cause such processes to be accelerated and/or truncated depending on the species and range site.

Water use by weeds is one type of loss that contributes to the cost of weeds to agriculture. Water use efficiency provides a mechanism by which water use by weeds can be estimated. Uncontrolled weed growth could result in estimated irrigation costs exceeding $50.00/ha. Weeds like barnyardgrass at threshold densities in irrigated crops like sugarbeet or tomato are estimated to increase production costs by about $20.00/ha depending on water cost.

There is a current need to develop alternative weed management techniques in response to demands for reduction in herbicide use due mainly to health and environmental concerns. Therefore, all possible nonchemical strategies for weed control should be considered, including biological control. Deleterious rhizobacteria (DRB), largely overlooked as potential biological control agents for weeds until recently, are able to colonize root surfaces of weed seedlings and suppress plant growth. Limited field studies indicate that DRB suppressed weed growth, and reduced weed density, biomass, and seed production. In this manner, crops out-compete the suppressed weeds for growth requirements, eliminating the necessity for eradication of weeds in the crop. Establishment of DRB as a viable biological control strategy initially will require integration with other weed control approaches including other biocontrol agents, agrichemicals, and cultural and residue management practices. To achieve success, more in-depth research is needed on ecology of bacteria-plant relationships, mechanisms of action (including characterization of phytotoxins), inocula formulations, and methods to enhance crop competition.

In 1993, a wild mustard population growing in a canola crop near Wetaskiwin, AB was poorly controlled by ethametsulfuron after only one previous use of the herbicide. Controlled environment experiments were conducted to compare the response of this suspected resistant population (R) with that of a known susceptible population (S) collected near Vegreville, AB to increasing rates of ethametsulfuron, metsulfuron, chlorsulfuron, thifensulfuron, HOE 075032, imazamethabenz, imazethapyr, metribuzin, and 2,4-D. The R wild mustard population was highly resistant to ethametsulfuron, slightly resistant to low rates of metsulfuron but not resistant to any of the other herbicides tested. This suggests that the mechanism of resistance may differ from that reported for other sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicides. Since resistance was documented after only 2 yr of ethametsulfuron use, the initial frequency of resistance to this herbicide in wild mustard populations may be very high. Dry weight of untreated plants did not differ significantly between the S and R populations suggesting little or no differences in competitiveness between them.

The productivity and native species diversity of Great Plains grasslands have been substantially reduced by past management that facilitated the establishment of invasive exotic weeds and displacement of native species. Management strategies are needed to rapidly restore the productive capacity and biological diversity of these degraded grasslands. Critically important phases of the grassland restoration process are the reintroduction and establishment of native species. Weed interference is the primary constraint to successful establishment of native plants. The goal of our research is to develop strategies that use multiple technologies, including herbicides, to expedite grassland revegetation with native grasses and forbs. Imidazolinone herbicides (AC 263,333, imazapyr, and imazethapyr) were used successfully to improve establishment of native perennial grasses (big bluestem, switchgrass, little bluestem) and selected forbs (blackeyed-susan, purple prairieclover, Illinois bundleflower, trailing crownvetch, and upright prairie coneflower) on cropland and as components of a strategy to revegetate leafy spurge-infested rangeland with native tallgrasses. Imazethapyr at 70 or 110 g ai/ha applied at planting resulted in stands of big bluestem and little bluestem that were similar or superior to stands established where atrazine was applied. Seedling grasses were susceptible to imazapyr at two of three study sites. Imazapyr at 560 g ai/ha plus sulfometuron at 100 g ai/ha applied in fall was the optimum treatment for suppression of leafy spurge and exotic cool-season grasses and establishment of big bluestem and switchgrass on degraded rangeland sites. Establishment of selected forbs was improved by PRE treatment with AC 263,222 or imazethapyr at 70 g ai/ha. This research provides evidence that the imidazolinone herbicides can be important components of integrated weed management strategies designed to reverse deterioration of grasslands by reestablishing native species, improving grassland productivity, and decreasing the prevalence of exotic weeds.

Field experiments were conducted in Alabama from 1992 through 1994 to evaluate the potential of the methyl ester of bensulfuron applied at sublethal rates as a plant growth regulator for reducing plant height and boll rot in cotton. Bensulfuron at 0.017 and 0.034 g ai/ha or mepiquat chloride at 10 g ai/ha was applied POST alone at the pinhead square or early-bloom stage of cotton growth or sequentially at 0.017 followed by (fb) 0.017 g/ha, 0.034 fb 0.034 g/ha of bensulfuron and 5 fb 5, 10 fb 10, 10 fb 20, or 20 fb 20 g/ha of mepiquat chloride. Mepiquat chloride had no effect on yield in 1992 and 1994 but decreased yield when applied sequentially in 1993. Bensulfuron was generally detrimental to first position fruit retention, and it delayed maturity. Treatments that reduced plant height did not reduce boll rot. Bensulfuron treatments that reduced plant height also reduced yield; therefore, the potential for its use as a growth regulator in cotton appears limited.

The current state of registration requirements for mobility assessments of pesticides is described and the various uses for mobility estimates are outlined. A survey of recent literature on mobility assessments is presented along with a suggestion for a refocus on Kd rather than KF. A proposal for a different, yet standard, more efficient approach as a replacement for the current requirements is outlined. The suggested approach could fit well within a registration package or a limited research budget as well as provide more information for model input.

Sagebrush control has historically involved mechanical and chemical (2,4-D) treatments designed for total control and which detrimentally affect nontarget plant species, resulting in decreases in native wildlife abundance and diversity. Tebuthiuron, a potentially selective herbicide with thinning capabilities, was applied at various rates to big sagebrush plots near Ten Sleep, WY in 1979 and Hyatteville, WY in 1983. Plant and small mammal communities were evaluated in 1992 and 1993. Big sagebrush cover in untreated areas was 31 ± 1% in 1992 and 34 ± 1% in 1993 at Ten Sleep, and 44 ± 4% at Hyatteville (α = 0.10). Big sagebrush control increased as application rate increased. Productivity of herbaceous species (graminoids, forbs, or both) tended to be greatest at about 11 to 17% big sagebrush cover. In general, plant community diversity tended to be greatest where sagebrush was thinned to this level. Small mammal community diversity was least at both sites where big sagebrush cover was less than 5%, and was strongly correlated with plant community diversity at Ten Sleep (R2W = 0.99; 4 degrees of freedom). In addition, greater abundance of or better habitat quality for endemic, stenotypic (habitat specialist) species was associated with about 15% big sagebrush cover. This suggests (albeit retroductively) that biodiversity at both local (alpha) and global (epsilon) scales might be conserved by thinning big sagebrush with tebuthiuron.

Rhizobacteria are being evaluated for promotion of plant growth and for biological control of weeds, insects, diseases, and nematodes. Although considerable efforts have been allocated to this approach to biological control, commercial success remains elusive yet intriguing. In this review, the root biology of downy brome and winter wheat is described as an initial model of the information needed for other plant hosts. A limited review of rhizobacteria in disease management is presented to demonstrate the potential and some limitations with rhizobacteria as biocontrol agents. Several techniques are described to improve the survival of a rhizobacterium to suppress downy brome. To achieve success with rhizobacteria in pest management, more information is needed on the root biology of the host plants and the ecology of the rhizobacteria.

An algorithm was developed for use in a geographic information system (GIS) to model the surface movement of herbicide in response to a rainfall event as modulated by slope, soil, management practices, and time of herbicide application. This algorithm was implemented in the GIS software Geographic Resource Analysis Support System (GRASS) and uses as submodels the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) curve number procedure, the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), and the pesticide submodel from the model Chemicals, Runoff, and Erosion from Agricultural Management Systems (CREAMS). The algorithm estimates the loss of pesticide from field areas, runoff flow patterns, and the accumulation of pesticide downslope in response to a rainfall event. The simulated movement of atrazine, cyanazine, and alachlor was studied under hypothetical management scenarios in the Lake Pittsfield watershed in Pike Co., IL. Tillage for the simulation was by moldboard plow. An alternate no-till scenario was simulated to test tillage effect on atrazine movement. Herbicides were applied either PPI, PRE, POST, or early preplant for no-till (treated as same application time as PPI but without incorporation). The experiment was designed to incorporate timing of application as a management factor from the standpoint of a single rain event on May 16. The results used for comparison were data from 1 d after POST application, 15 d after PRE application and 30 d after PPI application. The algorithm showed that areas of greater herbicide risk can be located within a watershed and that the effect of alternative management practices can be evaluated using a GIS.

Until recently, phytopathogenic bacteria have not been considered potential biological weed control candidates because they lack the ability to penetrate intact plants. This deficiency can be overcome by providing entry wounds or using surfactants. Spray application of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tagetis (5 × 108cells/ml) in aqueous buffer with a surfactant produced severe disease in Canada thistle, common ragweed, Jerusalem artichoke, sunflower, and certain other members of the Compositae under field conditions. Spray application of the bacterium without surfactant was ineffective on all reported hosts. Xanthomonas campestris pv. poannua controlled annual bluegrass in bermudagrass golf greens when applied by spray during mowing. The bacterium entered through mowing injuries, causing lethal, systemic wilt. Application of the bacterium to annual bluegrass in the absence of fresh mowing injuries failed to produce symptoms. Under field conditions, this previously unknown pathovar's host range was limited to a single subspecies of annual bluegrass, but inundative application to freshly mowed turf resulted in infection of diverse annual bluegrass biotypes. In field trials, six monthly applications resulted in greater than 70% control. The preceding examples are among the first attempts to use foliar phytopathogenic bacteria for biological weed control. Efficacy of these bacterial bioherbicides and of future biocontrol strategies employing bacteria is dependent on facilitated host penetration.

Fire has been a part of natural ecosystems for many millennia. The species of those ecosystems have evolved through a series of “coarse filters,” one of which is resistance or resilience to disturbance by fire. Plant adaptations to fire include the ability to sprout, seed bank adaptations in the soil or canopy, high dispersal ability for seeds, and thick bark. These adaptations are often to a particular fire regime, or combination of fire frequency, intensity, extent, and season. Fire can be used by managers to achieve species to ecosystem-level conservation biology objectives. Examples using prescribed fire include the grasslands of the Puget Trough of Washington State, maintenance of oak woodlands, and perpetuation of ponderosa pine/mixed-conifer forests.

Characterization of pesticide degradation in soil is an important component in determining the environmental impact of agriculturally-applied pesticides. Several techniques currently are being used to generate these data, but small-scale laboratory studies remain one of the most effective, cost-efficient mechanisms of evaluating pesticide behavior in soil. With small-scale studies, many different environmental factors can be incorporated into the experimental design, and with the use of 14C-labeled material, these studies (often referred to as soil degradation or soil metabolism studies) provide information on test substance persistence, degradation, volatilization, and mineralization. Care must be exercised, however, in selecting the experimental parameters to be used because of the potential adverse or artificial effects on the soil system.

Surface and subsurface soils are complex biological, chemical, and physical environments and to understand the fate of pesticides in the soil environment is a formidable task. To determine the environmental fate of pesticides requires a diverse array of techniques and procedures. Microbiological approaches range from applied to basic, laboratory to field, qualitative to quantitative, and from low to high technology. In the arena of biodegradation, teams of scientists are needed to develop predictive models for the behavior of pesticides in the soil environment. From our perspectives, we have documented the existing status of the microbiology of environmental fate studies with pesticides. Verification of data from laboratory studies to the field environment is needed. On the other hand, efforts to design better field studies to assess microbial processes are essential to advance our understanding of environmental fate studies with pesticides.

We are studying the possibility of altering the virulence and host range of a phytopathogen by transferring and expressing certain genes from the soil-dwelling saprophyte, Streptomyces hygroscopicus, in a plant pathogen model, Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (XCC). The genes, referred to herein as the “bialaphos genes,” encode the production of bialaphos, a potent glutamine-synthetase-inhibiting herbicide. This cluster of genes was originally isolated from several biosynthetically blocked mutants of S. hygroscopicus and constructed into a plasmid vector, pBG9. We have transferred a fragment of the gene cluster into pLAFR3, a plasmid that functions in both Escherichia coli and XCC and contains a tetracycline resistance marker. The resulting plasmid, named pIL-1, was used to transform E. coli and was incorporated into XCC by conjugation. The transfer of the fragment was confirmed by Southern analysis. The genes were maintained in XCC for about 47 generations in the absence of selection for tetracycline, and no changes in cultural phenotypes were seen in the transformed XCC (XCC/pIL-1). The XCC/pIL-1 cells were pathogenic to their natural hosts cabbage and broccoli, but induced an altered hypersensitive response in the nonhosts bean, pepper, sunflower, and tobacco. The pathogenic host-reaction, induced by the parent XCC, XCC/pLAFR3, and XCC/pIL-1, was a typical black rot disease in inoculated leaves of the two hosts. The nonhost reaction on the nonhost leaves was necrotic hypersensitivity, induced by XCC and XCC/pLAFR3, or the inhibition of hypersensitivity accompanied by only chlorosis at sites inoculated with XCC/pIL-1. We hypothesize that the altered hypersensitivity phenotype may be due to the transformed XCC becoming more compatible with the nonhosts, a step toward acquiring nonhost-virulence, or due to disruption of the normal expression of the hypersensitivity and pathogenicity genes in the transformed XCC. More work is needed to confirm that the introduced genes are being expressed in XCC. With further understanding, this approach may provide a useful model to study host range, virulence, and strain improvement of plant pathogens for biological control of weeds.

Standard timber management practices in the Pacific Northwest result in stands which often vary from unmanaged stands in structure and composition. Forest and wildlife managers have identified a deficit of stands in the mature (> 100-yr-old) age class that contain certain desirable wildlife habitat features. Techniques are being developed that would increase the likelihood that managed stands can produce these characteristics. The key desirable components in these stands include large (> 75 cm diam breast height) conifer trees, snags, coarse woody debris, and understory structure, including regeneration. Vegetation management techniques can facilitate development of these components within stands. Thinning the overstory, underplanting shade-tolerant species, and creating snags and coarse woody debris can be accomplished within a production forest. Maintaining shade-intolerant species requires a higher level of disturbance and canopy opening than needed for shade-tolerant species. Treatments which remove competition from shrubs and herbaceous plants may be necessary to insure growth and survival of understory regeneration. Injection of different herbicides into low-grade conifers may yield different types of snags in comparison to girdling or topping. Although much of the understory may be eliminated during future thinnings and final harvest, some of the structure will remain and could be carried over into the next rotation along with snags and large coarse woody debris. These treatments are expected to enhance mature habitats in present and future cycles with minimum impact on yield.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to determine host status of weed species for Rhizoctonia solani AG-1, which causes Rhizoctonia foliar blight of soybean. Weed species were barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, common cocklebur, entireleaf morningglory, hemp sesbania, itchgrass, johnsongrass, large crabgrass, northern jointvetch, prickly sida, purple nutsedge, redweed, sicklepod, and smooth pigweed. Seedling weeds were inoculated with suspensions containing intraspecific group IA and IB isolates of the fungus. In the first study, sclerotia of IA were recovered from tissue of all weeds except smooth pigweed, and mycelia of IA were recovered from all except smooth pigweed and redweed. In that study, neither microsclerotia nor mycelia of IB were recovered from sicklepod, barnyardgrass, or large crabgrass, and only microsclerotia were recovered from itchgrass and purple nutsedge. In the second study, sclerotia of IA, microsclerotia of IB, and mycelia of each isolate were recovered from all weed species. In other studies, R. solani spread from at least six of seven weed species to a noninfected soybean plant growing in close proximity. These studies emphasize the importance of weed control, not only for reducing plant competition and increasing yield, but also for the potential impact on development of RFB.
