A mixture of activated carbon and vermiculite was used to increase the tolerance to 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) of direct-seeded cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L., var. Wisconsin SMR-15) in greenhouse tests and direct-seeded tomatoes (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill, var. Bouncer) in greenhouse and field (var. Heinz 1370) tests. The tolerance of cucumbers to dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA) and 4-(methylsulfonyl)-2,6-dini tro-N,N-dipropylaniline (nitralin) also was increased in field trials. When the mixture was placed in a hole (0.75 inch deep by 1 inch diam) over the crop seed to the level of the soil surface, preemergence herbicides were detoxified in the small area; and the crop plant was not injured. The herbicide remained active outside the small protected area. Also, a wafer consisting of an activated carbon-vermiculite mixture, fertilizer, and seed provided protection to direct-seeded crops.

The great herbicidal developments of recent years give hope for chemical control of annual bluegrass, Poa annua, which is a major weed problem in bentgrass turf. Annual bluegrass produces an abundance of seed and quickly dominates bentgrass turf that is not growing at its optimum. Annual bluegrass might be controlled by prevention of seed set, pre-emergence control, and plant eradication. The original purpose of this study was to evaluate chemicals which offered promise of annual bluegrass control by checking seed set. However, necessity led to consideration of any promising chemical regardless of its method of control.

Since it was first discovered by Bucha and Todd, that 3-(p-chlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea would kill most plants if applied at dosages of 20 pounds and above per acre there has been much speculation as to whether it is translocated in plants. Observations from early field trials indicating that soil treatments with this compound were more effective than foliar applications led to the assumption that entrance of the herbicide into plants was primarily through the roots. Loustalot demonstrated positively, however, that this substituted urea is also absorbed through the leaves and stems. Recent investigations at this laboratory, contrasting essentially equal applications on foliage and roots of several species, have also indicated that appreciable injury is caused by foliar absorption of the compound.

A 2,4-D-resistant tall waterhemp population (FS) from Nebraska was evaluated for resistance to other TIR1 auxin receptor herbicides and to herbicides having alternative mechanisms of action using greenhouse bioassays and genetic markers. Atrazine, imazethapyr, lactofen, mesotrione, glufosinate, and glyphosate were applied in a single-dose bioassay, and tissue was collected from marked plants for genetic analysis. The FS population was not injured by atrazine or by imazethapyr. Approximately 50% of the plants survived lactofen and were actively growing 28 d after treatment. The population was susceptible to mesotrione, glufosinate, and glyphosate. Ametryn, chlorimuron-ethyl, 2,4-D, aminocyclopyraclor, aminopyralid, and picloram were applied in dose–response studies. The FS population was sensitive to ametryn, and the Ser-264-Gly substitution in the D1 protein was not detected, suggesting the lack of response to atrazine is not due to a target-site mutation. The FS population exhibited less than 50% injury to chlorimuron-ethyl at application rates 20 times the labeled use rate. The Ser-653-Asn acetolactate synthase (ALS) substitution, which confers resistance to imidazolinone herbicides, was present in the FS population. However, this does not explain the lack of response to the sulfonylurea herbicide, chlorimuron-ethyl. Sequencing of a portion of the PPX2L gene did not show the ΔG210 mutation that confers resistance to protoporphyrinogen oxidase–inhibiting herbicides, suggesting that other factors were responsible for waterhemp survival after lactofen application. The FS population was confirmed to be at least 30-fold resistant to 2,4-D relative to the susceptible populations. In addition, it was at least 3-fold less sensitive to aminopyralid and picloram, two other TIR1 auxin receptor herbicides, than the 2,4-D-susceptible populations were. These data indicated that the FS population contains both target and non–target site mechanisms conferring resistance to herbicides spanning at least three mechanisms of action: TIR1 auxin receptors, ALS inhibitors, and photosystem II inhibitors.

Seed dormancy allows weedy rice (Oryza sp.) to persist in rice production systems. Weedy and wild relatives of rice (Oryza sativa L.) exhibit different levels of dormancy, which allows them to escape weed management tactics, increasing the potential for flowering synchronization, and therefore gene flow, between weedy Oryza sp. and cultivated rice. In this study, we determined the genetic diversity and divergence of representative dormant and nondormant weedy Oryza sp. groups from Arkansas. Twenty-five simple sequence repeat markers closely associated with seed dormancy were used. Four populations were included: dormant blackhull, dormant strawhull, nondormant blackhull, and nondormant strawhull. The overall gene diversity was 0.355, indicating considerable genetic variation among populations in these dormancy-related loci. Gene diversity among blackhull populations (0.398) was higher than among strawhull populations (0.245). Higher genetic diversity was also observed within and among dormant populations than in nondormant populations. Cluster analysis of 16 accessions, based on Nei’s genetic distance, showed four clusters. Clusters I, III, and IV consisted of only blackhull accessions, whereas Cluster II comprised only strawhull accessions. These four clusters did not separate cleanly into dormant and nondormant populations, indicating that not all markers were tightly linked to dormancy. The strawhull groups were most distant from blackhull weedy Oryza sp. groups. These data indicate complex genetic control of the dormancy trait, as dormant individuals exhibited higher genetic diversity than nondormant individuals. Seed-dormancy trait contributes to population structure of weedy Oryza sp., but this influence is less than that of hull color. Markers unique to the dormant populations are good candidates for follow-up studies on the control of seed dormancy in weedy Oryza sp.

Common ragweed is one of the most important weeds in the soybean-producing areas of the United States and Canada. Recently, glyphosate-resistant (GR) biotypes have been reported in 15 states and one Canadian province. Reducing the proliferation of GR common ragweed biotypes is complicated by the high fecundity and complex seed germination behavior exhibited by this species. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of late herbicide applications for reducing seed production, seed weight, and seed viability of a GR common ragweed biotype. Herbicide treatments included: water control, glyphosate, 2,4-D, dicamba, 2,4-D plus glyphosate, and dicamba plus glyphosate. Treatments were applied at the appearance of male flower buds (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt and Chemical industry scale [BBCH] 51) or at the early female flowering stage (BBCH 61 to 63). At BBCH 51, 2,4-D or dicamba applied alone or in a tank mix with glyphosate reduced seed production by an average of 80%. Conversely, seed production following these same treatments applied at BBCH 61 to 63 was not significantly different from when glyphosate was applied alone. At this stage of development, all herbicide treatments reduced seed viability relative to the control; however, treatments containing 2,4-D or dicamba resulted in significantly lower viability than when glyphosate was applied alone. These results suggest that the application of tank mixes containing 2,4-D or dicamba have the potential to limit seed production of GR common ragweed when applied on or before BBCH 51. The development of new technologies that facilitate the in-crop application of tank mixes containing 2,4-D or dicamba may therefore be an effective option for limiting population establishment, seedbank replenishment, and future spread of glyphosate-resistant alleles.

Cowcockle, an introduced summer annual weed of the Northern Great Plains, is being considered for domestication because of its high quality starch, cyclopeptides, and saponins. Loss of seed dormancy is one of the key desirable traits for domestication. To determine the potential for domestication of this species, an understanding of the seed dormancy and germination patterns is required. The objectives of this study were to evaluate seed dormancy in cowcockle ecotypes and determine how temperature and light affect seed dormancy. We evaluated 15 populations of cowcockle for primary dormancy by exposing them to five temperatures (5, 7.5, 10, 15, and 20 C) under two temperature regimes (constant and alternating) in both dark and light conditions. Freshly matured seeds of all the populations showed high levels of primary dormancy except ‘Mongolia’. Lower levels of dormancy at medium temperatures (10 and 15 C) and greater dormancy at low and high temperatures suggest conditional dormancy, a state at which seeds germinate over a narrower range of conditions compared to nondormant seeds. The effects of temperature regime, light, and their interaction was significant only at suboptimal (5 and 7.5 C) and supraoptimal (20 C) temperatures. Under these conditions, alternating temperatures were more effective in breaking the conditional dormancy, followed by light. The variation in optimum temperature, light, and their interactions among the cowcockle populations may be due to the plants evolving to adapt to their local environments. From a domestication perspective, the conditional dormancy in cowcockle can be observed as an evolutionary mechanism that prevents untimely germination following maturity and may not be a major obstacle for its domestication.

The exotic Brazilian peppertree is a serious invader of both disturbed and natural areas in central and south Florida, forming fast-growing, impenetrable thickets that dominate entire ecosystems. Brazilian peppertree has been targeted for biocontrol, and two defoliating insect species may eventually be released. This study was done to consider the possible effectiveness of defoliating biocontrol agents. The research investigated the effects of different frequencies of defoliation on height, crown diameter, and berry production of young Brazilian peppertrees. All the foliage was manually clipped from 36 trees in field plots once or twice per year for ≥ 1 yr. The effect on berry production of clipping 100% of the leaves from scattered individual branches of one large Brazilian peppertree was ALSo examined. Trees that were completely defoliated five times at 6-mo intervals were significantly smaller and produced significantly fewer fruits than undamaged controls. Plants defoliated one time only, two times in 1 yr, and two times in each of 2 yr were comparable to the undamaged controls. From this simulated herbivory study, we infer that multiple defoliations by insect defoliators have the potential to significantly suppress the growth and fruit production of Brazilian peppertree in Florida.

Greenhouse and growth chamber studies were conducted to investigate effects of herbicide placement in soil on toxicity to emerging seedlings. The use of a technique involving a plastic bag over the plants for 3 to 4 weeks to reduce soil moisture loss did not change the apparent site of 2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine (atrazine) uptake by green foxtail (Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv.) or oats (Avena sativa L.). Atrazine was more effective on oats through root exposure and more effective on green foxtail through shoot exposure when an untreated buffer zone around the seed was used. But in subsequent studies without the buffer zone, atrazine was most active when placed immediately below the seed of both oats and green foxtail. Proximity to the seed increased effectiveness of atrazine, S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC), and 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (diuron). Also, a narrow concentrated layer of these three herbicides adjacent to the seed was more effective than a wider dilute layer above or below the seed. A diurnal fluctuating temperature regime with a low night temperature increased toxicity of EPTC to oats through root exposure, when compared to a constant temperature regime.

Hoary cress is a perennial herbaceous weed that has invaded agricultural and natural areas of western North America. Invasions are often composed of dense patches, and it is unclear whether clonal growth via lateral rhizomes or seedling recruitment is the dominant method of patch expansion. To study the clonal structure of this invasive, six patches from three USA populations (194 ramets) were analyzed with the use of Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs). Known siblings and clones were also included to ensure sufficient variation for discrimination between clonal and nonclonal ramets. Patches had low genet/ramet ratios (mean G/N = 0.25) and low diversity levels (mean D = 0.49) compared to similar clonal studies. Single genets represented 55–85% of the ramets sampled in a patch, and the largest genet was 38 m across. Hoary cress exhibits a strong bias toward patch-size increase from clonal reproduction rather than from seedling recruitment. Results indicate that biological control methods that focus on reducing or eliminating seed production would do little to stop expansion of a patch. Despite the domination of a patch by one or a few large genets, other smaller genets are able to persist or are occasionally recruited into dense areas of a patch.

Injury to corn (Zea mays L.) from S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate (butylate) was investigated with respect to hybrid. Field experiments in 1971 at Dillon and Clemson, South Carolina, established that the corn hybrid ‘Coker 71’ was more tolerant to butylate than ‘Pioneer 511A’. Also established as being tolerant and sensitive to butylate were the hybrids ‘Pioneer 3030’ and ‘PAG 644’, respectively. Laboratory studies with 14C-butylate showed that the resistant hybrid ‘Pioneer 3030’ took up less 14C-butylate and metabolized more to 14CO2 than did ‘PAG 644’.

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of crop rotation (spring barley monoculture vs. spring barley–red clover 2-yr rotation), tillage (moldboard plow, chisel plow, no-till), and weed management (intensive, moderate, minimum) on plant–seedbank relationships for 19 weed species. Plant and seedbank density data were collected over 4 yr and analyzed by analysis of variance and correlation analysis to confirm treatment effects on plant–seedbank relationships. The relative frequency (difference between aboveground and seedbank frequency) of many species was more influenced by rotation, whereas species density appeared regulated more by weed management than by other factors. Frequency data confirmed that very few species were ubiquitous over time or treatment, aboveground or in the seedbank. The perennial species, field horsetail, quackgrass, white clover, and perennial sowthistle were more frequent aboveground than in the seedbank. This was also observed for annuals such as common hempnettle, sun spurge, catchweed bedstraw, and annual grasses. Treatment effects on abundance were inconsistent aboveground and in the seedbank across time for 12 of 19 species. The seven species that showed more consistent treatment response for abundance were frequent species present in 50% of the plots both aboveground and in the seedbank. For most species, plant density was correlated with either the previous or current year seedbank, but correlations were rarely of the same magnitude and significance over the years. Common chickweed was the only species for which treatment effects on the plant–seedbank relationship were confirmed for all 4 yr. Correlations between midseason plant populations and subsequent seedbanks confirmed the role of residual populations in replenishing the seedbanks, including those of perennials like quackgrass and dandelion. Overall, plant–seedbank relationships were tenuous for many weed species and varied over time with cropping practices and environment.

Corn (Zea mays L.) plots receiving broadcast spray applications of triazine herbicides without cultivation yielded as much as plots receiving the standard two cultivations for weed control. One cultivation resulted in an average 6% increase in corn grain yield on herbicide treated plots. This yield increase probably was due to improved weed control. Weed growth reduced grain yields an average of 1.23 bu/A for each 100 lb/A of dry weeds. In some experiments, increases in corn yield due to improved weed control by cultivation on plots treated with herbicides were less than increases expected based on weed growth reductions. This disparity may have been due to injury to the corn by cultivation.

Broadleaf weeds, including spurred anoda, emerge after direct-seeded chile peppers are thinned. Field experiments were conducted in 1989, 1990, and 1991 to determine the effect of spurred anoda density on green and red pepper yield, quality, and ease of hand harvest. Spurred anoda was established immediately after peppers were thinned at initial densities of 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, or 48 plants 9 m−1 row. The 1991 experiment also evaluated the influence of delayed pepper thinning and concurrent spurred anoda establishment on the competitive effect of spurred anoda. Spurred anoda were beginning to flower at green harvest and senescing at red harvest regardless of planting date. Spurred anoda were taller and accumulated more biomass when planted at a pepper thinning stage of 10 cm compared to 20 cm. Spurred anoda that emerged after thinning peppers reduced yield and ease of harvest of green and red peppers but not the quality of green peppers. Yield reduction at the highest spurred anoda density was 31 to 49% and 12 to 27% when peppers were thinned at 10 or 20 cm, respectively. Yield reduction was smaller when peppers were thinned at 20 cm tall than 10 cm tall and appeared to be associated with reduced spurred anoda biomass. Time required to hand harvest 1 kg of green or red peppers increased as spurred anoda density increased when peppers were thinned at 10 cm.

The effect of soil moisture, temperature, and light intensity on the spray deposition of fenoxaprop and imazamethabenz applied to wild oat plants was examined by using fluorescent tracer dye. Based on either biomass or total leaf area, the apparent deposition of the two herbicides diminished in the following order: shading > low temperature ≥ drought ≥ “optimum” > high temperature. The enhanced phytotoxicity of both herbicides under shading could be associated with increased spray deposition; and reduced fenoxaprop phytotoxicity under high temperature stress could be related to reduced deposition. Changes in spray deposition were attributed mainly to differences in herbicide interception due to altered plant morphology. Reduced retention for both herbicides was exhibited only in the plants grown at high temperature. Under “optimum” conditions, fenoxaprop phytotoxicity was directly associated with leaf orientation and thus with the proportion of projected leaf area at the time of herbicide spraying. Given similar application conditions, spray deposition of fenoxaprop and imazamethabenz on wild oat could be estimated by determining the ratio of the projected leaf area, as measured by an image analyzer, to the total leaf area.

The production of new shoots of American pondweed (Potamogeton nodosus Poir.) and sago pondweed (P. pectinatus L.) was reduced significantly when winterbuds and tubers of these species were planted in dwarf spikerush [Eleocharis coloradoensis (Britt.) Gilly] sod. In most instances, the number of shoots produced was several times greater when winterbuds and tubers were planted in bare soil than when planted in spikerush sod. Similar results were obtained when the pondweeds were grown in separate aquaria, each aquarium being exposed to 500 ml of leachate per day from spikerush sod. The differences in reproduction of pondweeds could not be attributed to altered water quality nor to reduced levels of nutrients. No appreciable allelopathic response was elicited by the pondweed plants originating from planted tubers or winterbuds. The principal response appeared to be reduction in numbers of new shoots produced from the original propagules, although the reduction in biomass of the pondweeds exposed to the effects of spikerush was obvious. Of the two pondweeds investigated, sago pondweed was most sensitive to the influence of spikerush.

Three herbicides, 2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine (atrazine), 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine), and 3-tert-butyl-5-chloro-6-methyluracil (terbacil), applied annually at 0.45, 0.90, and 1.80 kg/ha for 2 or 3 years to establish forage alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ‘Ranger’), effectively controlled downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.), tumble mustard (Sisymbrium altissimum L.), and prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola L.). However, downy brome control decreased to less than half and broadleaf control ceased 18 months after the final herbicide application. Atrazine injured alfalfa most. Usually, annual applications of 0.45 kg/ha did not reduce yield. Greenhouse and field bioassay data indicated that the herbicides leached below the 0 to 32.5 cm soil zone and persisted. Residues were absorbed by roots of crops planted 2 to 3 years after the last application. Injury was similar whether the last application was made 18 or 30 months previously. The order of crop tolerance was sweet corn (Zea mays L. ‘Rugosa’) > potatoes (Solarium tuberosum L. ‘Norgold’) > winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘Nugaines’) > bush beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ‘Humilis’) ≅ sugar beets (Beta vulgaris L. ‘U. & I. hybrid No. 8′).

The phytotoxicity of 1,1-dimethyl-3-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)urea (fluometuron) and three of its analogs was studied on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), foxtail (Setaria sp.), and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.). Fluometuron was the most active compound, and the demethylated derivative and aniline analog were the least phytotoxic. The activity of the monomethyl analog of fluometuron, when applied via nutrient solution and to clay soil, was about 50% and 70% of the parent compound, respectively. Photosynthesis in cotton and redroot pigweed was inhibited by fluometuron, to a lesser degree by the monomethyl analog, and not at all by the demethyl and aniline analogs. Cotton was most tolerant, and only slight differences were found between the susceptibility of foxtail and redroot pigweed. These differences in response to fluometuron and its metabolites may contribute to the differential response between cotton and weeds.

Prior to germination, seed of some plant species either adsorb or absorb some herbicides applied to the soil. Equations were developed describing the concentration of the herbicide expected in the seed both when diffusion of the herbicide in the soil is the limiting factor and when diffusion of the herbicide within the seed is the limiting factor. Expected concentrations of the herbicide in the seed were presented for combinations of three seed radii (seed were assumed to be spheres) five diffusion times, and five diffusion coefficients. The calculated concentrations of the herbicide in the seed in ppm increased as seed size or radii decreased. This theoretical result was consistent with experimental data and potentially explains why some large-seeded plant species are difficult to control with the use of herbicides. The equation developed for a perfect “sink” predicted within experimental error the concentration of isopropyl m-chlorocarbanilate (chlorpropham) absorbed by soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) seed from aqueous solutions of chlorpropham.

Plants of catchweed bedstraw from different Norwegian locations and from three other countries were compared with respect to morphological factors, herbicide sensitivity, and genetic variation. For the morphological comparison of cotyledons, whorls, leaves, and fruits five populations, grown outdoors but sheltered from rain, were used. Plants from Belgium and Sweden showed a high similarity, whereas one Norwegian population differed significantly in nearly all parameters. The same populations were used for a comparison of the sensitivity to the herbicide mecoprop-P. In this study, only slight differences appeared between the five populations. Finally, a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions was performed. The entire sequence of the ITS1 and ITS2 and the 5.8S subunit of ribosomal DNA were obtained from 15 populations (12 from Norway and one each from Sweden, Belgium, and Germany). The sequences had a length between 590 and 662 base pairs; intraspecific length variation was observed. Based on six insertions–deletions and 26 nucleotide substitutions, two DNA types could be distinguished. The first type consisted of eight Norwegian populations, whereas the second one contained the other seven populations including all non-Norwegian populations. The sequence alignments were used to build a phylogenetic tree. The results of the morphological comparison mostly corresponded with the results of the ITS sequence analysis. The variation was only to some extent correlated with the geographic distribution of the populations.
