Weeds are a major constraint to crop production in smallholder farms in tropical Africa. The weed seedbank and annual recruitment are the main sources of weed infestation in crops. This study was carried out in Ibadan, Nigeria, to evaluate the effect on the seedbank of two types of planted fallow (alley cropping with leucaena and live mulch with tropical kudzu) and a natural bush fallow under four land-use intensities. Type of fallow was the main plot. Land-use intensities, consisting of continuous cropping of maize intercropped with cassava, 1 cropping yr of maize–cassava followed by 1, 2, and 3 yr of fallow, were the subplots. Averaged over a 3-yr period, the seedbank was 55% lower in the tropical kudzu plots and 43% lower in the leucaena plots compared with natural bush. The difference in seedbanks between plots cultivated after leucaena and natural fallow was 23%. Seed density of annual broadleaf weeds was high and dominated the seedbank of both planted and natural fallow. Overall, seeds of grasses occurred at low densities in all plots cultivated after 2 to 3 yr of fallow, whereas seeds of sedges occurred more in continuously cultivated plots and plots cultivated after 1 yr of fallow in all the fallow types. Seed density of perennial broadleaf weeds increased as land-use intensity decreased. Live mulch with tropical kudzu, especially when combined with 2 to 3 yr of fallow, lowered the seedbank more than the leucaena and traditional bush fallow systems.

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia spp.), an aggressive noxious perennial weed of North America, is a complex group that has been designated as several different species, including E. esula L. (# EPHES) and E. virgata Wald. & Kit. [E. waldsteinii (Sojak) Radcliffe-Smith]. Current classification keys are unsatisfactory in assigning plants in the field to specific taxa (or to a single taxon). These keys rely heavily upon morphological characteristics of leaves, but great variation in the leaves has been noted by us and previously reported by others. In this study we demonstrate qualitatively and quantitatively that the within-plant, within-clone, among-clone, and among-site variation in leaf morphology and triterpenoid content of the latex of leafy spurge is inherently high. Leaf characters were of little value in separating any of the accessions considered in our study. Latex triterpenoid profiles were useful in distinguishing E. lucida W. & K. × salicifolia Host. and E. salicifolia from European E. esula, E. waldsteinii, and E. sequieriana Neck. ssp. seguieriana, and all Montana accessions previously described from morphological studies. We concluded that Montana leafy spurge and the European E. esula, E. waldsteinii, and E. sequieriana belong to a single taxon: Euphorbia esula L.

Sequential applications of preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) herbicides were applied over a two-year period for large crabgrass and goosegrass control in common bermudagrass. Large crabgrass control was better when prodiamine at 0.3 kg ai ha−1 or oryzalin at 0.8 kg ai ha−1 were applied in late February, and followed by MSMA at 1.1 kg ai ha−1 in June than when prodiamine (0.8 kg ha−1) or oryzalin (2.4 kg ha−1) were applied at recommended rates. Goosegrass control was better when prodiamine was applied at 0.3 kg ha−1 followed by MSMA plus metribuzin at 2.2 + 0.1 kg ai ha−1, or when oryzalin was applied at 1.7 kg ha−1followed by MSMA plus metribuzin at 1.1 + 0.1 kg ha−1 than when prodiamine was applied at 0.8 kg ha−1 or oryzalin was applied at 3.3 kg ha−1. There was no increase in goosegrass control when diclofop was applied in sequence after prodiamine or oryzalin compared to diclofop alone. POST applications of diclofop, MSMA, and MSMA plus metribuzin did not injure common bermudagrass more severely when applied to plots previously treated with prodiamine and oryzalin than with POST herbicides alone.

We studied the effect of tillage systems (no-till, chisel, and moldboard plow) and the presence or absence of Zea mays L. (corn) on soil temperature, moisture, and, subsequently, the emergence phenology and density of Chenopodium album L. (common lambsquarters) at two sites (Elora and Woodstock) from 1993 to 1995. The tillage system affected the phenology of C. album seedling emergence only in 1995. In that year, more days were required to reach 80% cumulative seedling emergence in no-till than in the chisel or moldboard plow treatments. The delay in obtaining 80% cumulative emergence was attributed to a dry period from days 159 to 177 at Elora and from days 155 and 176 at Woodstock. The presence or absence of Z. mays did not affect soil temperatures, soil moisture, or C. album seedling emergence phenologies. Chenopodium album seedling density was influenced by tillage and environmental conditions. Large variations in seedling density were attributed to environmental conditions. The presence or absence of Z. mays did not affect C. album seedling density.

Yellow starthistle is a problematic invasive plant in the western United States. Attempts to control it often include the use of herbicides although herbicides can have detrimental effects on desired native species. We studied the effect of clopyralid on a native bunchgrass and vernal pool community in the Central Valley of California. Areas invaded by yellow starthistle were treated with clopyralid, and the presence and cover of all species was monitored for 2 yr. There were significant differences in species cover between treated and untreated plots 2 yr after treatment (P = 0.0001). These included a decline in cover of yellow starthistle and other native and exotic members of the Asteraceae and Apiaceae families in both years and a decline of exotic members of the Fabaceae family in the second year. There also were decreases in the frequency of the Asteraceae (P < 0.0001), Apiaceae (P < 0.05), Fabaceae (P < 0.05), and Polygonaceae (P < 0.05) families 1 yr after treatment, and the Asteraceae (P < 0.05) and Fabaceae (P < 0.05) families 2 yr after treatment. We also observed a significant negative effect of clopyralid on fecundity measures of a native Viola species during the first year of application (P = 0.0074). This effect did not persist into the second year, when violets were more common and produced more flowers in treated plots (0.02 < P < 0.05).

Germination studies on camphorweed [Heterotheca subaxillaris (Lam.) Britt. & Rusby] revealed that freshly harvested disk achenes germinated best at 17.5 C (88%) while ray achenes were dormant. Camphorweed seed from disk achenes also germinated at temperatures as low as 3 C. Seedlings grown under long-day conditions at 23 C day and 8 C night temperatures for 144 days elongated at the rate of 0.18 cm/day. Plants grown under short-day conditions at the same temperature regime elongated at the rate of 0.06 cm/day. Total leaf surface area, fresh weight, and dry weight of shoots of plants grown under long days were at least 1.5 times greater than plants grown under short day conditions. Camphorweed, regardless of size and age, survived a 2-h exposure at −5 C. All plants in the rosette stage survived at −15 C in the freezer and an overnight temperature of −11.7 C in the field, whereas larger plants were killed at these temperatures. Stage of growth was an important factor in the herbicidal control of camphorweed. Plants in the rosette stage were generally more susceptible to herbicides than older plants. Simazine [2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine] at 3.4 kg/ha, paraquat (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bypyridinium ion) at 0.6 kg/ha, methazole [2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazolidine-3,5-dione] at 5.0 kg/ha, and a formulated mix of diuron [3–3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea] and terbacil (3-tert-butyl-5-chloro-6-methyluracil) at 4.5 kg/ha provided adequate control of camphorweed in the rosette stage. Asulam (methyl sulfanilylcarbamate) at 2.2 or 4.5 kg/ha applied alone did not control camphorweed in the rosette form but was more effective on older plants. Various combinations of these herbicides were generally effective at both stages of growth.

Three musk thistle (Carduus thoermeri Weinm.) sites that were infested with a weevil (Rhinocyllus conicus Froel.) and a fourth non-infested site were evaluated for numbers of insects and seeds per seed head. At four successive weekly intervals, seed heads were sampled just after flowering. Initial sampling was in 1978 and was repeated in 1979. Weevil incidence in heads blooming during the first week was 6.7/head in 1978 and 28.0 in 1979. At infested sites, production of fully developed seeds averaged 28% less than at the non-infested site in 1978 and 78% less in 1979. Heads that were in bloom during the fourth sampling week had an infestation rate less than one weevil/head in both years. Fully developed seeds germinated well (96 to 99%) and were not affected by date of bloom. Because many heads bloomed during the third and fourth weeks, a large number of viable seeds were still produced at infested sites.

Destructive growth analysis of field replacement series experiments with mayweed chamomile and dry field peas was used to determine the competitive relationship between the two species. Mayweed chamomile produced similar amounts of leaf area and dry weight per plant in a dry year and a wet year. On the other hand, dry field peas produced 20% more leaf area and 100% more dry weight per plant in the wet year compared to the dry year. Height, leaf area, and dry weight of peas reached maximum between bloom and pod-set, and then declined. Height and dry weight of mayweed chamomile increased steadily throughout the growing season. Mayweed chamomile leaf area reached a maximum at the beginning of flower stem elongation. Initially, the relative growth rate of mayweed chamomile was about three times greater than the rate for peas, but by 40 to 48 d after planting, rates were similar for both species. Relative yields and relative crowding coefficients for dry weight showed that peas were 3 to 20 times more aggressive than mayweed chamomile. Results of these experiments show that mayweed chamomile is a weak competitor against peas, but because it continues to grow after peas senesce, it could interfere with crop harvest.

Palmer amaranth influences selection of crop production practices such as irrigation, nitrogen (N) application, and weed control. The objectives of this research were to determine if Palmer amaranth was more responsive to applied N than corn and if this differed under dryland and irrigated conditions in Kansas. Field experiments were conducted near Manhattan, KS, in 2005 and 2006 to evaluate the influence of N rate and Palmer amaranth densities when grown with corn in two soil moisture environments. A very drought-stressed environment and a well-watered environment occurred in 2006, while both environments in 2005 were intermediate. Dryland weed-free corn yields were 46.5% of irrigated corn yields at the high N rate across years. Irrigated corn yields responded to increasing N rates. In the presence of Palmer amaranth, parameter estimates I and A for the yield loss relationship were not different across N rates for each environment and year except 2006 where 100% yield loss was estimated in dryland compared to 62.5% loss in irrigated environment at high N rates. In three of four environment-years, N rate did not affect the corn yield loss relationship with weed density. In 2006 irrigated environment, greater N rates had less corn yield loss caused by Palmer amaranth. By corn anthesis, weed-free corn biomass was 167.5% greater in irrigated than dryland environments in 2006. Palmer amaranth with no corn increased its biomass by 373 and 361% as N rate increased in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Nitrogen concentrations in plant tissues of corn or weed increased similarly as N rates increased from 0 to 224 kg N ha−1, thus highlighting that both corn and Palmer amaranth responded similarly to increasing N. In general, soil moisture environment was most critical when determining potential corn yield, followed by Palmer amaranth density and N rate.

Weed growth and N assimilation usually increase with N application rate. With the increasing price of N fertilizer, a better understanding N assimilation by weeds is necessary to maximize economic return. Total plant yield is generally independent of population density, except when plants are very small or at very low population density. If plant yield is independent of population density, weed N assimilation may also be independent of population density. However, the effect of weed population density on N assimilation has not been thoroughly investigated. A 2011 controlled-environment study was established in East Lansing, MI, to evaluate the effect of weed population density and N application rate on growth and N assimilation by common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed. Study factors included four weed densities (1, 2, 4, and 8 plants pot−1), three N application rates (0, 67, and 134 kg N ha−1), and two weed species (redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters). Weeds were destructively harvested 3 wk after emergence, and shoot height, biomass, total N concentration, N use efficiency, and N assimilation were measured. Redroot pigweed was taller, had greater shoot biomass, and a greater shoot N assimilation than did common lambsquarters. With similar environmental conditions, redroot pigweed is expected to be more competitive than common lambsquarters. Shoot N assimilation increased with increasing weed population density, indicating that N assimilation was not independent of population density 3 wk after emergence because weeds were small or at low population density.

The influence of tillage, crop rotation, and weed management regimes on the weed seedbank in land previously under the conservation reserve program (CRP) for 8 yr was determined from 1994 through 1997. The study was a split-plot design with four replications, two tillage systems, two crop rotations, and three weed management treatments. Eleven weed species were recorded in 1994 and 1995, and 13 in 1996 and 1997. The weed seedbank was dominated by broadleaf species. In 1994, the first year after CRP, the seed population density in the top 15 cm of the soil profile was 51,480 seeds m−2, of which 60 and 20% were pigweed and common lambsquarters. The population density of pigweed seeds in the seedbank increased over time and reached 51,670 seeds m−2 in 1996. In contrast, the seed population density for foxtail species was only 417 seeds m−2 in 1994, but it increased to 7,820 seeds m−2 in 1997. The large increase in foxtail species seed population density in the 4-yr period was mainly in the no-herbicide weed management treatment. The weed seedbank was reduced similarly by band and broadcast herbicide treatments. Tillage and crop rotation did not influence the weed seedbank or Shannon's diversity index, nor did they interact with the weed management treatments in any of the years. The weed seedbank population density varied with the years and time of soil sampling. Weed seed population densities tended to be greater in the fall but declined significantly by time of the spring sampling. The no-herbicide treatment had a more diverse weed seedbank compared with band and broadcast herbicide weed management treatments. An average of one grass and three broadleaf weed species were identified in the three weed management treatments. Band and broadcast herbicide treatments reduced the weed seedbank population density but did not affect the number of broadleaf weed species observed.

Hemp dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum L.) was investigated relative to seed germination, depth of seedling emergence, response to clipping, influence of soil type and fertility on vegetative growth, and herbicidal control. Seed germination in this study was influenced by light and scarification. Seedling emergence was influenced by the amount of soil cover. Soil type and fertility affected vegetative growth. In a greenhouse clipping study, hemp dogbane became perennial 41 days after emergence and by 65 days was producing more than one shoot per plant following clipping. Hemp dogbane was more completely controlled following September application of herbicide than from application made in June.

Failure to control Xanthium strumarium with acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor herbicides has been reported in Iowa and surrounding states. Single-seed descent techniques were used to isolate three X. strumarium biotypes: CAM-10 from near Cambridge, Iowa; Colo-25 from near Colo, Iowa; and Ohio-1 from Fulton County, Ohio. Ohio-1 and Colo-25 were selected because of apparent resistance to imazethapyr, whereas CAM-10 was selected for observed sensitivity to imazethapyr. The biotypes were assayed in vitro with three different ALS inhibitor herbicides, and ALS activity was measured. The 50% inhibition values (I50) of ALS for imazethapyr were determined to be ninefold or higher for the Ohio-1 and Colo-25 biotypes compared to the CAM-10 biotype. The I50 for imazaquin was determined to be about ninefold higher for the Colo-25 biotype and sixfold higher for the Ohio-1 biotype when compared to the CAM-10 biotype. All biotypes were equally sensitive to chlorimuron ethyl. The resistance was due to a single dominant nuclear gene.

Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used in the current study to identify polymorphism in α- and β-esterase loci in leaf tissues of wild poinsettia plants for the analysis of genetic diversity and structure of populations. Seeds were collected from different plants in 12 different populations. Two to three allelic variants were at Est-1, Est-2, Est-3, Est-4, Est-5, Est-6, and Est-7 loci. The estimated proportion of polymorphic loci in populations is 87.5%. High and low values of observed and expected proportion of heterozygous loci in 12 populations confirm our suspicion that the populations are genetically structured (FST = 0.1663). The heterozygous deficiencies are evidenced by the positive value of FIS (0.1248). The positive FIS value indicates a deficit of heterozygous (12.48%) or an excess of homozygous plants, which could be the result of frequent herbicide application in areas where seeds were collected and/or the result of self-pollination. Overall inbreeding or nonrandom breeding, according to the significant FIT value (0.2703), did play a major role in shaping the genetic structure of these populations. Identity values represented in the dendrogram should play a more central role in developing policies to manage and control this species.

Longspine sandbur germinated readily after 3 months of storage at 0 to 4 C. Germination was 15 to 82 and 10 to 76% for seed retained by or that passed through a 1.7-mm-mesh screen, respectively, and was greatest in complete darkness near 30 C. Light inhibited seed germination at most of the temperatures tested. Incubating imbibed seed at 40 C and 40/10 C for 3 weeks reduced the viability of seed that did not germinate by more than 50%. Primary seed within the bur germinated 77% and secondary seed germinated 35% during 2 weeks at 35/10 C (16 light/8 dark h). Primary seed placed in polyethylene glycol (PEG) solutions ranging from −0.5 to −1.5 kPa water potential germinated as much or greater than seed placed in water, while secondary seed germination was inhibited by similar osmotic potentials. Seedlings emerged from depths to 11 cm but emerged most readily from 1- to 3-cm depths.

Relative humidity after application, spray additives, and solution pH affected both foliar absorption and translocation of 14C-picloram to leafy spurge roots. 14C-picloram absorption increased from 11 to 34% and translocation increased from 5 to 21% as time at posttreatment humidity increased from 0 to 48 h. Absorption and translocation were not different when pre- or posttreatment temperatures were 30/18 or 18/10 C (day/night). 14C-picloram absorption and translocation to the roots were 18 and 6%, respectively, when applied alone, and increased to 46 and 12%, respectively, when applied with ammonium sulfate at 2.5 kg/ha. Absorption and translocation were unaffected by ammonium nitrate. Foliar absorption and translocation of 14C-picloram in leafy spurge were unaffected by pH of unbuffered spray solution but increased at least 50% when applied in a solution buffered at pH 4.8 with trisodium citrate. Foliar absorption in detached leafy spurge leaves increased from 26 to 51% of applied 14C as the citrate buffer concentration increased from 0.01 to 0.1 mM, respectively.

Field studies were conducted in Louisiana to determine growth and yield effects resulting from the accidental application of the isopropylamine formulation of glyphosate to sugarcane. Glyphosate at 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 kg ae ha–1 was applied in water at 90 L ha–1 in May, June, and August. Sugar yields (kg ha–1) were reduced 44% when glyphosate was applied over the top of sugarcane at 0.2 kg ha–1 in June; similar reductions for the May and August applications required 0.4 kg ha–1. Reductions in sugar yield were primarily attributed to reductions in both cane yield and recoverable sugar in the crushed juice because stalk populations and stalk weights were lowered and immature stalks that survived contained less sugar. The recoverability of the subsequent ratoon crop was also affected, particularly when glyphosate was applied in May and June to the previous crop at rates of 0.4 kg ha–1 and higher.

Time- and concentration-course studies were conducted to determine the metabolic sites of action of fluridone {1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4(1H)-pyridinone} in isolated mesophyll cells of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. ‘Acala SJ-1′) and red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Cotton is resistant and bean is susceptible to fluridone. The herbicide was not metabolized in cells of either species during the 2-h incubation period. At the highest concentration (10-4 M) and longest incubation time (2 h), fluridone inhibited photosynthesis, RNA synthesis, and protein synthesis 59, 56, and 32%, respectively in bean and 24, 21, and 14% in cotton. Lipid synthesis and dark respiration were only slightly affected. The lowest concentration and the shortest incubation period that inhibited photosynthesis, RNA synthesis, and protein synthesis in bean did not have any significant effect in cotton. The difference in responses may contribute to the selectivity of the herbicide. Although photosynthesis appeared to be the primary site of action, RNA synthesis was also markedly inhibited. These inhibitions and the somewhat lower inhibition of protein synthesis may ultimately contribute to the herbicidal action of fluridone in the intact plant.

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. ‘Stoneville 7A’) grown for 3 yr in competition with various weed densities and nitrogen levels showed annual weeds could reduce cotton heights as much as 75% and cotton yields as much as 88%. Cotton yields were increased by 18 to 30% by adding nitrogen to plots with no weeds. In 1973, cotton supplied with 224 kg/ha of nitrogen could tolerate up to 50% weeds without loss of yield. Weeds left to grow and reseed with no control resulted in increasingly greater competition with each succeeding year.

In field experiments at Prosser, WA, black nightshade (Solanum nigrum L. # SOLNI), eastern black nightshade (S. ptycanthum Dun. # SOLPT), American black nightshade (S. americanum Mill. # SOLAM), hairy nightshade (S. sarrachoides Sendtner # SOLSA), and sometimes accessions within a species responded differentially to herbicides applied preplant incorporated, preemergence, or postemergence. Also, the response of the nightshades to some of the herbicides varied significantly between years. Generally, black nightshade was more tolerant of herbicides than were the other three species. An accession of black nightshade from England and an accession of eastern black nightshade from Minnesota were the most tolerant of herbicides of eight accessions evaluated. Of the 25 herbicides evaluated, preplant-incorporated applications of ethalfluralin [N-ethyl-N-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)-2,6-dinitro-4-(trifluoromethyl) benzenamine] and preemergence applications of alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide], chloramben (3-amino-2,5-dichlorobenzoic acid), lactofen [1′-(carboethoxy)ethyl 5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl) phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoate], and metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl] acetamide] controlled all species best. These herbicides reduced the oven-dry weights of both accessions of all four species of nightshades by 93% or more. Nightshades varied widely in their response to the thiocarbamates.
