We have investigated the distribution of ON- and OFF-center responses in the lateral geniculate nucleus of ferrets with normal and abnormal retinal projections. Electrophysiological recordings in normal pigmented animals confirm previous studies on mustelids showing that ON-center responses are found in the anterior, inner parts of laminae A and AI and OFF-center responses in posterior, outer leaflets. In albino animals, lamina A displays normal patterns of ON/OFF segregation but in lamina AI, which receives an abnormal crossed retinal projection, no consistent patterns of segregation are found. Following monocular enucleation on the day of birth, the uncrossed projection in pigmented ferrets remains expanded across the LGN. Anatomically and physiologically, this projection is segregated into two leaflets: an anterior, inner ON-center leaflet and a posterior outer OFF-center leaflet. We conclude that the persistence of ON/OFF segregation, independent of geniculate location, suggests that self-sorting of retinal input is an important factor in generating the segregation.

Although the neural location of the plaid motion coherence process is not precisely known, the middle temporal (MT) cortical area has been proposed as a likely candidate. This claim rests largely on the neurophysiological findings showing that in response to plaid stimuli, a subgroup of cells in area MT responds to the pattern direction, whereas cells in area V1 respond only to the directions of the component gratings. In Experiment 1, we report that the coherent motion of a plaid pattern can be completely abolished following adaptation to a grating which moves in the plaid direction and has the same spatial period as the plaid features (the so-called “blobs”). Interestingly, we find this phenomenon is monocular: monocular adaptation destroys plaid coherence in the exposed eye but leaves it unaffected in the other eye. Experiment 2 demonstrates that adaptation to a purely binocular (dichoptic) grating does not affect perceived plaid coherence. These data suggest several conclusions: (1) that the mechanism determining plaid coherence responds to the motion of plaid features, (2) that the coherence mechanism is monocular, and thus (3), that it is probably located at a relatively low level in the visual system and peripherally to the binocular mechanisms commonly presumed to underlie two-dimensional (2-D) motion perception. Experiment 3 examines the spatial tuning of the monocular coherence mechanism and our results suggest it is broadly tuned with a preference for lower spatial frequencies. In Experiment 4, we examine whether perceived plaid direction is determined by the motion of the grating components or the features. Our data strongly support a feature-based model.

The parallel processing of visual features by distinct neuron populations is a central characteristic of the mammalian visual system. In the A laminae of the cat dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), parallel processing streams originate from two principal neuron types, called X and Y cells. Disruption of visual experience early in life by monocular deprivation has been shown to alter the structure and function of Y cells, but the extent to which deprivation influences X cells remains less clear. A transcription factor, FoxP2, has recently been shown to selectively label X cells in the ferret dLGN and thus provides an opportunity to examine whether monocular deprivation alters the soma size of X cells. In this study, FoxP2 labeling was examined in the dLGN of normal and monocularly deprived cats. The characteristics of neurons labeled for FoxP2 were consistent with FoxP2 being a marker for X cells in the cat dLGN. Monocular deprivation for either a short (7 days) or long (7 weeks) duration did not alter the density of FoxP2-positive neurons between nondeprived and deprived dLGN layers. However, for each deprived animal examined, measurement of the cross-sectional area of FoxP2-positive neurons (X cells) revealed that within deprived layers, X cells were smaller by approximately 20% after 7 days of deprivation, and by approximately 28% after 7 weeks of deprivation. The observed alteration to the cross-sectional area of X cells indicates that perturbation of this major pathway contributes to the functional impairments that develop from monocular deprivation.

The endogenous opioid peptide [Met5]-enkephalin is a tonically active opioid growth factor (OGF) with an inhibitory action on DNA synthesis in the developing rat retina. In this study, the ontogeny of the spatial and temporal expression of OGF and its binding activity was examined. OGF-like immunoreactivity was detected in the retina at gestation day (E) 20, but not at E18, and was localized to ganglion cell and neuroblast layers; immunochemical reaction was no longer seen in the retina by postnatal day 6. Native OGF was further identified and characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) studies and immunodot assays, which revealed that [Met5]-enkephalin was present in the neonatal, but not adult, rat retina. OGF binding activity was detected as early as E18 using [125I]-[Met5]-enkephalin and in vitro receptor autoradiography. Little OGF binding activity was noted for prenatal retinas, but appreciable activity was observed from birth to postnatal day 4; no OGF binding could be detected after postnatal day 5 or in the adult. These results reveal the transient appearance of the OGF, [Met5]-enkephalin, and its receptor binding activity in the developing mammalian retina, and show that their ontogeny coincides with the timetable of DNA synthesis of retinal neuroblasts.

The compound eye of the tobacco hornworm moth Manduca sexta contains green-, blue-, and ultraviolet-sensitive photoreceptors. Electroretinogram spectral-sensitivity measurements were recorded from different regions of the retina in order to broadly map the distribution of the three receptor types. The relative contribution of the three receptors to spectral-sensitivity curves was estimated by fitting theoretical curves based on the absorption spectra of the three rhodopsins. This analysis indicated that the dorsal retina is green and ultraviolet dichromatic, with green-sensitive cells greatly predominating. The ventral retina is trichromatic with a substantial population of blue- and ultraviolet-sensitive receptors. We previously showed that flower visitation for nectar feeding is mediated mainly by blue-sensitive cells. Their localization in the ventral retina seems an appropriate adaptation of the receptor mosaic, since the moths hover above flowers as they feed.

Electroretinogram (ERG) studies identified a new mouse line with a normal a-wave but lacking the b-wave component. The ERG phenotype of this new allele, nob7, matched closely that of mouse mutants for Grm6, Lrit3, Trpm1, and Nyx, which encode for proteins expressed in depolarizing bipolar cells (DBCs). To identify the underlying mutation, we first crossed nob7 mice with Grm6nob3 mutants and measured the ERGs in offspring. All the offspring lacked the b-wave, indicating that nob7 is a new allele for Grm6: Grm6nob7. Sequence analyses of Grm6nob7 cDNAs identified a 28 base pair insertion between exons 8 and 9, which would result in a frameshift mutation in the open reading frame that encodes the metabotropic glutamate receptor 6 (Grm6). Sequencing both the cDNA and genomic DNA from exon 8 and intron 8, respectively, from the Grm6nob7 mouse revealed a G to A transition at the last position in exon 8. This mutation disrupts splicing and the normal exon 8 is extended by 28 base pairs, because splicing occurs 28 base pairs downstream at a cryptic splice donor. Consistent with the impact of the resulting frameshift mutation, there is a loss of mGluR6 protein (encoded by Grm6) from the dendritic tips of DBCs in the Grm6nob7 retina. These results indicate that Grm6nob7 is a new model of the complete form of congenital stationary night blindness, a human condition that has been linked to mutations of GRM6.

Synaptically localized calcium channels shape the timecourse of synaptic release, are a prominent site for neuromodulation, and have been implicated in genetic disease. In retina, it is well established that L-type calcium channels play a major role in mediating release of glutamate from the photoreceptors and bipolar cells. However, little is known about which calcium channels are coupled to synaptic exocytosis of glycine, which is primarily released by amacrine cells. A recent report indicates that glycine release from spiking AII amacrine cells relies exclusively upon L-type calcium channels. To identify calcium channel types controlling neurotransmitter release from the population of glycinergic neurons that drive retinal ganglion cells, we recorded electrical and potassium evoked inhibitory synaptic currents (IPSCs) from these postsynaptic neurons in retinal slices from tiger salamanders. The L-channel antagonist nifedipine strongly inhibited release and FPL64176, an L-channel agonist, greatly enhanced it, indicating a significant role for L-channels. ω-Conotoxin MVIIC, an N/P/Q-channel antagonist, strongly inhibited release, indicating an important role for non-L channels. While the P/Q-channel blocker ω-Aga IVA produced only small effects, the N-channel blocker ω-conotoxin GVIA strongly inhibited release. Hence, N-type and L-type calcium channels appear to play major roles, overall, in mediating synaptic release of glycine onto retinal ganglion cells.

In the avian brain, the optokinetic response is controlled by two retinal-recipient nuclei: the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) of the accessory optic system and the pretectal nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (LM). Although considered sister nuclei because of their similar response properties and function, there are both similarities and differences with respect to efferent projections and neurochemistry. Both nBOR and LM project to the cerebellum (Cb) directly as mossy fibers but also indirectly via the inferior olive (IO). In a previous report, we showed that the cerebellar- and inferior olivary-projecting neurons in nBOR of pigeons differentially express the calcium-binding proteins calretinin (CR) and parvalbumin (PV). Both CR and PV are expressed in the somata of LM neurons, although the latter is not as prevalent, and whether expression of CR and PV reflects cerebellar and IO projections is not known. In this report, by combining retrograde neuronal tracing from the Cb and IO with fluorescent immunohistochemistry, we examined the expression of these calcium-binding proteins in the pigeon LM. Half (52%) of the cerebellar-projecting neurons were CR+ve, but only 15% were PV+ve. Almost all (>95%) these PV+ve cells also expressed CR. In contrast, few of the IO-projecting neurons expressed CR or PV (≤5%). This is strikingly similar to what we observed in nBOR and reveals that calcium-binding protein expression is concordant with projection patterns in two nuclei that share similar functions.

Five lagged cells were recognized by extracellular recording in the lateral geniculate nucleus of an awake, behaving macaque monkey. Previous reports of lagged cells were all in the anesthetized cat. Both parvocellular and magnocellular lagged cells were observed. Response timing was distributed continuously across the population, and both sustained and transient responses were seen in the magnocellular subpopulation. Cortex thus receives signals with a wide range of timing, which can mediate direction selectivity across multiple dimensions.

The patchy pattern of retrograde labeling produced by injections of anatomical tracers into the lateral suprasylvian (LS) visual area was compared to the cytochrome oxidase (CO) blobs in cat visual cortex. Following large injections of anatomical tracers in LS, retrograde labeling formed an irregular lattice of patches with a spacing of slightly less than 1 mm in area 17, and slightly greater than 1 mm in area 18. By comparing labeling in alternate serial sections, patches of LS-projecting cells in both areas were found to align with CO blobs. The conclusion of alignment between CO blob columns and patches of LS-projecting cells was confirmed by a quantitative analysis which showed a significant correlation between the local density of LS-projecting cells in reconstructions of charted cells and the intensity of CO staining in the CO-reacted sections. As for areas 17 and 18, labeling in other afferent areas of LS was also patchy with a spacing on the order of 1 mm except for area 19 where we found patches of LS-projecting cells with a larger spacing, roughly 2 mm. No matching fluctuations in CO density could be discerned in area 19, however. In conjunction with recent evidence that CO blob columns in cats receive strong input from Y-cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus (Boyd & Matsubara, 1996; Shoham, et al., 1996), these data support the hypothesis (Shipp & Grant, 1991) that the patches of LS-projecting cells correspond to Y-cell input columns. As a relationship between the CO architecture and certain classes of efferent cells has previously been shown in primates, these findings show new similarities between CO blobs in different mammalian species.

Being utilized by over 40% of the amacrine cells, glycine is considered to be a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the retinas of all vertebrate species examined. Localization of gephyrin, which is a 93-kD peripheral membrane glycine receptor-associated anchoring protein, has been used in several studies to identify the sites of glycinergic interactions in the retina and other regions of the central nervous system. Recent studies have shown that gephyrin colocalizes with GABAA receptors which, like those for glycine, are also inhibitory amino acid receptors usually associated with a chloride channel. In the present study, we have used two antibodies which recognize either gephyrin (mAb7a), or the α and β subunits of the glycine receptor (mAb4a) in order to determine to what extent gephyrin is associated with glycine receptors in the mammalian retina. Single-label studies showed extensive punctate staining throughout most of the inner plexiform layer with each antibody. Double labeling showed that nearly 90% of the glycine receptor sites were also immunoreactive for gephyrin. However, nearly 60% of the total punctae immunoreactive for gephyrin were not stained for glycine receptors. This distinction was most pronounced in the most proximal inner plexiform layer where only 24% of the gephyrin-immunoreactive sites were glycine receptor positive. This study suggests that although most glycine receptors in the rabbit retina colocalize with the anchoring protein gephyrin, a significant proportion of the gephyrin-labeled sites are not associated with glycine receptors. In light of studies showing gephyrin association with GABAA receptor subunits, the localization of gephyrin may be indicative of chloride-mediated inhibitory amino acid transmission in general and not solely that of glycinergic. Given several studies which show that bipolar cells express glycine receptors and respond to glycine but do not express gephyrin, the 10% of glycine receptors not colocalized with gephyrin shown in the present study may represent a subtype of glycine receptors found on bipolar cells which do not require gephyrin for the functional clustering of receptor subunits.

The callosal connections between visual cortical areas 17 and 18 in adult normally pigmented and “Boston” Siamese cats were studied using degeneration methods, and by transport of WGA-HRP combined with electrophysiological mapping. In normal cats, over 90% of callosal neurons were located in the supragranular layers. The supragranular callosal cell zone spanned the area 17/18 border and extended, on average, some 2–3 mm into both areas to occupy a territory which was roughly co-extensive with the distribution of callosal terminations in these areas. The region of the visual field adjoining the vertical meridian that was represented by neurons in the supragranular callosal cell zone was shown to increase systematically with decreasing visual elevation. Thus, close to the area centralis, receptive-field centers recorded from within this zone extended only up to 5 deg into the contralateral hemifield but at elevations of -10 deg and -40 deg they extended as far as 8 deg and 14 deg, respectively, into this hemifield. This suggests an element of visual non-correspondence in the callosal pathway between these cortical areas, which may be an essential substrate for “coarse” stereopsis at the visual midline.

In the Siamese cats, the callosal cell and termination zones in areas 17 and 18 were expanded in width compared to the normal animals, but the major components were less robust. The area 17/18 border was often devoid of callosal axons and, in particular, the number of supragranular layer neurons participating in the pathway were drastically reduced, to only about 25% of those found in the normally pigmented adults. The callosal zones contained representations of the contralateral and ipsilateral hemifields that were roughly mirror-symmetric about the vertical meridian, and both hemifield representations increased with decreasing visual elevation. The extent and severity of the anomalies observed were similar across individual cats, regardless of whether a strabismus was also present. The callosal pathway between these visual cortical areas in the Siamese cat has been considered “silent,” since nearly all neurons within its territory are activated only by the contralateral eye. The paucity of supragranular pyramidal neurons involved in the pathway may explain this silence.

Nucleus rotundus and nucleus dorsolateralis posterior (DLP) are the thalamic components of two parallel pathways within the tectofugal division of the pigeon visual system. An earlier study (Hodos, Weiss & Bessette, 1986) had shown that lesions in direct telencephalic recipients of projections from rotundus and DLP produced postoperative elevations in size-difference thresholds only if the lesion included both structures. What was not revealed by their study was whether the integrity of both thalamic components is necessary for pigeons to discriminate small differences in the size of stimuli or whether the birds could still make the discrimination with only one of the two nuclei intact. This question was particularly important because no prior behavioral evidence existed to indicate that DLP plays a role in visual information processing. Therefore, 14 pigeons were tested preoperatively using a variant of the method of constant stimuli to determine the smallest difference between the size of two annuli that the subjects could discern. The comparison stimuli, which were presented in a successive discrimination procedure, ranged from 3.5–15 mm in diameter. After surgery, in which lesions were placed bilaterally in rotundus, DLP, or both structures, the subjects' size-difference thresholds were again determined. Combined lesions of rotundus and DLP resulted in impaired psychophysical performance. The postoperative behavior was characterized by initial elevations in threshold followed by a gradual improvement in performance. Some birds returned to their preoperative level. By comparison, subjects with lesions in rotundus or DLP alone showed an immediate return to their preoperative sensitivity level. These results indicate that both nuclei can process information about the size of visual stimuli. Moreover, the processing that occurs within either nucleus is sufficient for the pigeon to discriminate size differences. The present experiment provides the first behavioral evidence that DLP participates in visual information processing.

The retinas of adult teleost fish can regenerate following injury, but little is known about the neuronal integration of the visual scene that is performed by the regenerated retina. Using goldfish retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) as the experimental system, an evaluation of dendritic arbor structure and passive electrotonic properties was developed, the aim being to quantitatively test the hypothesis that native and regenerated RGC dendritic arbors have similar structural and modeled electrotonic attributes. Fractal dimension was chosen as the descriptor of RGC dendritic arbor complexity, and the arbors' transfer function magnitudes were estimated using an electrically passive, equivalent-circuit analysis. For both native and regenerated RGCs, arbors qualitatively judged to be simple tended to have lower fractal dimension values than arbors judged to be more complex. All cells had similar cut-off frequencies, and for random stimulation of greater than 25% of an RGC's population of dendritic tips, there was a positive correlation between fractal dimension and transfer function magnitude. Some regenerated RGCs had abnormally long primary dendrites, but neither the distributions of fractal dimension values, nor the estimated transfer function magnitudes, were significantly different between native and regenerated RGCs. The results appear to support the hypothesis that structural and modeled electrotonic attributes of regenerated goldfish RGCs are similar to those of native RGCs, suggesting that regenerated RGCs may restore normal visual function.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the retina and also appears to act as a trophic factor regulating photoreceptor development and regeneration. Although the tiger salamander is a major model system for the study of retinal circuitry and regeneration, our understanding of GABA receptors in this species is almost exclusively based on the results of physiological studies. Therefore, we have examined the pharmacological binding properties of GABAA receptors and their anatomical localization in the tiger salamander retina. Radioligand-binding studies showed that specific 3H-GABA binding to GABAA receptors was dominated by a single high-affinity binding site (Kd = 15.6 ± 6.9 nM). Specific binding of 3H-GABA was almost completely eliminated by muscimol (Ki = 105 ± 62 nM) and bicuculline (Ki = 14.3 ± 2.2 μM); however, SR-95531 only displaced about 40% of specific 3H-GABA binding (Ki = 35.0 ± 3.8 nM). These data indicate that there are at least two subtypes of GABAA receptors present in the salamander retina that can be distinguished by their antagonist binding properties: one sensitive to both bicuculline and SR-95531, and one sensitive to bicuculline but insensitive to SR-95531. Because localization of GABA receptors in the salamander retina by immunocytochemistry is problematic, GABAA receptors were localized by fluorescent ligand binding combined with immunocytochemical labeling for cell specific markers. Binding of fluorescently labeled muscimol to GABAA receptors was present in both plexiform layers and on photoreceptor cell bodies. GABAA receptors in the outer plexiform layer were localized to both photoreceptor terminals and horizontal cell processes.

The two-dimensional organization of receptive fields (RFs) of 44 cells in the cat visual cortex and four cells from the cat LGN was measured by stimulation with either dots or bars of light. The light bars were presented in different positions and orientations centered on the RFs. The RFs found were arbitrarily divided into four general types: Punctate, resembling DOG filters (11%); those resembling Gabor filters (9%); elongate (36%); and multipeaked-type (44%). Elongate RFs, usually found in simple cells, could show more than one excitatory band or bifurcation of excitatory regions. Although regions inhibitory to a given stimulus transition (e.g. ON) often coincided with regions excitatory to the opposite transition (e.g. OFF), this was by no means the rule. Measurements were highly repeatable and stable over periods of at least 1 h. A comparison between measurements made with dots and with bars showed reasonable matches in about 40% of the cases. In general, bar-based measurements revealed larger RFs with more structure, especially with respect to inhibitory regions. Inactivation of lower cortical layers (V-VI) by local GABA injection was found to reduce sharpness of detail and to increase both receptive-field size and noise in upper layer cells, suggesting vertically organized RF mechanisms. Across the population, some cells bore close resemblance to theoretically proposed filters, while others had a complexity that was clearly not generalizable, to the extent that they seemed more suited to detection of specific structures. We would speculate that the broadly varying forms of cat cortical receptive fields result from developmental processes akin to those that form ocular-dominance columns, but on a smaller scale.

Whole-cell recordings of tiger salamander ganglion cells were obtained using a superfused retinal slice preparation. Membrane current fluctuations were recorded under voltage-clamp conditions with cells usually held at −70 mV. Current fluctuations at rest (Mg2+ = 1 mM) were reduced by adding d-2-amino-7-phosphonoheptanoate (d-AP7). Resting fluctuations were increased by adding N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) or by removing extracellular Mg2+. These increased fluctuations were blocked by d-AP7. Blocking NMDA receptors under control conditions also reduced a tonic inward current by −1 to −15 pA. Fluctuation analysis of current noise shows that the noise power spectrum measured in the presence of NMDA is similar to that measured under Mg2+-free conditions. We conclude that NMDA receptors are active in cells held at −70 mV even in the presence of 1 mM Mg2+. We believe this activation is due to the presence of endogenous glutamate in the retina. The observations of this study strongly suggest that NMDA receptors contribute to the resting noise and conductance properties of retinal ganglion cells. Our results suggest NMDA receptors are activated by an ambient level of extracellular glutamate whose source has yet to be determined.

Rhodopsin gene expression has been used as a model system to study the mechanisms regulating photoreceptor gene expression. Previous transgenic experiments using rhodopsin promoter/lacZ fusion constructs identified some of the cis-acting DNA elements responsible for photoreceptor cell-specific expression. However, the issue of rod specificity vs. photoreceptor (rod and cone) specificity of the elements was not resolved. To address this issue, the specificity of reporter gene expression in the retinas of transgenic mice carrying bovine rhodopsin promoter/lacZ (ß-galactosidase) fusion genes was assessed using X-gal staining and electron microscopy. Two independent transgenic lines, one carrying a rhodopsin promoter fragment extending from −2174 to +70 base pairs (bp) relative to the messenger RNA start site and another line carrying a fragment from −222 to +70 bp, both showed reporter gene expression in cones as well as rods, although the level of staining appeared to be less in the cones than in the rods. These results demonstrate that the −2174 to +70 bp and −222 to +70 bp bovine rhodopsin promoter fragments are not rod-specific in transgenic mice and indicate that the existence of rod promoter mediated-expression in cones must be considered when interpreting results from transgenic experiments utilizing the rhodopsin promoter.

When a bar of light (215 x 5000 μm) illuminates the receptive field of an ON-β ganglion cell of cat retina, the cell depolarizes. Intracellular recording from the cat eyecup preparation shows that this depolarization is due to an increase in conductance (2.4 ± 0.6 nS). Different phases of this depolarization have different reversal potentials, but all of these reversal potentials are more positive than the cell’s resting potential in the dark. When the light is turned on, there is an initial transient depolarization; the reversal potential measured for this transient is positive (23 ± 11 mV). As the light is left on, the cell partially repolarizes to a sustained depolarization; the reversal potential measured for this sustained depolarization is close to zero (−1 ± 5 mV). When the light is turned off, the cell repolarizes further; the reversal potential measured for this repolarization is negative (−18 ± 7 mV), but still above the resting potential in the dark (−50 mV). To explain this variety of reversal potentials, at least two different synaptic conductances are required: one to ions which have a positive reversal potential and another to ions which have a negative reversal potential. Comparing the responses to broad and narrow bars suggests that these two conductances are associated with the center and surround, respectively. Finally, since an ON-β cell in the area centralis receives about 200 synapses, these results indicate that a single synapse produces an average conductance increase of about 15 pS during a near-maximal depolarization.

Psychophysical measurements using achromatic grating resolution acuity in peripheral vision show a prominent retinal asymmetry in acuity which is consistent with predicted values based on available estimates of midget ganglion cell density. Recent studies have shown that peripheral grating resolution acuity values for short-wavelength-sensitive (SWS) isolating gratings in normal observers are closely related to predicted values based on the underlying small bistratified ganglion cell density. By measuring SWS resolution acuity at different locations across the visual field, we wished to see if any significant acuity asymmetry exists for the short-wavelength system. In addition to this, we wanted to compare SWS and achromatic resolution acuity at different retinal locations of equal eccentricity. SWS and achromatic grating resolution acuity was measured in two observers at a number of different retinal meridians of 10- and 25-deg eccentricity from the fovea, and out to 35-deg eccentricity along the horizontal meridian. Achromatic resolution acuity was higher than SWS resolution acuity at all locations. At 10-deg eccentricity there was slight radial asymmetry in SWS and achromatic acuity, both displaying highest acuity along the horizontal meridian. At 25-deg eccentricity, SWS and achromatic acuity showed significant asymmetry with acuity being higher in the nasal retina compared to the temporal retina and with higher acuity in the superior retina compared to the inferior retina. At 35-deg eccentricity, the acuity asymmetry along the horizontal meridian was maintained with acuity for both significantly higher in the nasal retina. The SWS acuity changes with eccentricity and meridian were qualitatively similar to that found for achromatic acuity at the majority of retinal locations. Like achromatic acuity, SWS acuity shows significant asymmetry at different retinal locations of equal eccentricity. This suggests that both the midget and small bistratified ganglion cell population density changes significantly with retinal location and eccentricity. SWS acuity appears to change in parallel with achromatic acuity for the majority of retinal locations measured, although the amount of nasotemporal asymmetry appears to be slightly less for the SWS system at 25- and 35-deg eccentricity.
