The purpose of this study is to determine how the viewing distance affects the pass/fail results of the CN Lantern (CNLan). The CNLan is a color vision test designed for the railway industry. It presents 15 triplets of colored lights that could be any combination of red, green and yellow. The test was viewed from 4.6 m and 2.3 m. Sixty-seven color-defectives participated in the first part of the study. Sixty-six percent of the subjects repeated the experiment 10 days later. There was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the mean number of errors from 7.6 to 4.3 as the distance decreased. There was also a corresponding increase in the percentage of subjects who passed from 9.0% at 4.6 m to 20.9% at the 2.3 m viewing distance. None of the subjects who passed at the longer distance failed at the shorter distance. The replication results were statistically identical to the first session (P > 0.05). Decreasing the CNLan viewing distance by 50% does decrease the number of errors and increase the pass rate. This indicates that some color-defectives could work in the railway yards where the sighting distances for the signal lights are shorter than on the main track.

The center of the receptive field of some retinal ganglion cells exhibits an interesting fine structure: the relative amplitudes of responses to onset and responses to offset of a small spot of light varies systematically as the spot is positioned at various places within the center. Although this pattern may appear complicated, a simple model can account for it in detail. The model postulates that the ganglion cell receives input from separate ON and OFF processes within the center of its receptive field. These processes have the form of Gaussian functions and are laterally displaced from each other. These central ON and OFF input processes are not associated with the additional antagonistic surround of the receptive field.

The model is examined for various parameters of the input processes. The observed systematic variation in the ratio of offset to onset responses is predicted when the two processes are of nearly equal width (standard deviation of the Gaussians). Receptive fields made of more than two Gaussians produce various patterns, depending on the relative standard deviations of the Gaussians. Oblong fields, reminiscent of those found in visual cortex, may be generated from a relatively small number of circularly symmetric Gaussian processes.

Agrin is a large extracellular matrix protein that directs the accumulation of acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction. Recent evidence suggests that agrin may be involved in organizing synapses in the visual system as well. Focussing on the pathway that controls accommodation and pupilloconstriction, this study examined the temporal pattern of agrin expression with reference to the organization of cholinergic synapses between embryonic chick Edinger-Westphal and ciliary ganglion neurons. In situ hybridization with an S35-labeled agrin cRNA probe was used to characterize agrin expression in the Edinger-Westphal nucleus during development. Agrin mRNA was detected in the Edinger-Westphal nucleus at all time points studied, from embryonic day 7 (E7, Hamburger and Hamilton stage 31) through newly hatched chicks. Throughout this period, agrin mRNA expression in Edinger-Westphal neurons was lower than in nearby oculomotor and trochlear neurons, suggesting that cells projecting to neuronal targets may require less agrin than those projecting to muscle. Agrin mRNA expression in the Edinger-Westphal nucleus at E7, E8, E9, and E10 was significantly higher than at E12. The early appearance of agrin mRNA coincides with the period during which acetylcholine receptors are being organized on ciliary ganglion neurons, consistent with the possibility that agrin contributes to neuron-neuron synapse formation in this pathway.

This paper examines how the responses of cells in area 17 of the cat vary as a function of the vernier offset between a bright and a dark bar. The study was prompted by the finding that human vernier acuity is reduced for bars or edges of opposite contrast sign (Mather & Morgan, 1986; O'Shea & Mitchell, 1990). Both simple and complex cells showed V-shaped tuning curves for reverse contrast stimuli: i.e. response was minimum at alignment, and increased with increasing vernier offset. For vernier bars with the same contrast sign, γ-shaped tuning curves were found, as reported earlier (Swindale & Cynader, 1986). Sensitivity to offset was inversely correlated in the two paradigms. However, complex cells with high sensitivity to offsets in a normal vernier stimulus were significantly less sensitive to offsets in reverse contrast stimuli. A cell's response to a vernier stimulus in which both bars are bright can be predicted by the shape of its orientation tuning curve, if the vernier stimulus is approximated by a single bar with an orientation equal to that of a line joining the midpoints of the two component bars (Swindale & Cynader, 1986). This approximation did not hold for the reverse contrast condition: orientation tuning curves for compound barswere broad and shallow, rather than bimodal, with peaks up to 40 deg from the preferred orientation. Results from simple cells were compared with predictions made by a linear model of the receptive field. The model predicted the V-shaped tuning curves found for reverse contrast stimuli. It also predicted that absolute values of tuning slopes for vernier offsets in reverse contrast stimuli might sometimes be higher than with normal stimuli. This was observed in some simple cells. The model was unable to explain the shape of orientation tuning curves for compound bars, nor could it explain the breakdown of the equivalent orientation approximation.

Recent physiological studies coupled with intracellular staining have subdivided ON directionally selective (DS) ganglion cells of rabbit retina into two types. One exhibits more “transient” and more “brisk” responses (ON DS-t), and the other has more “sustained’ and more “sluggish” responses (ON DS-s), although both represent the same three preferred directions and show preference for low stimulus velocity, as reported in previous studies of ON DS ganglion cells in rabbit retina. ON DS-s cells have the morphology of ganglion cells previously shown to project to the medial terminal nucleus (MTN) of the accessory optic system, and the MTN-projecting, class IVus1 cells have been well-characterized previously in terms of their dendritic morphology, branching pattern, and stratification. ON DS-t ganglion cells have a distinctly different morphology and exhibit heterotypic coupling to amacrine cells, including axon-bearing amacrine cells, with accompanying synchronous firing, while ON DS-s cells are not coupled. The present study shows that ON DS-t cells are morphologically identical to the previously well-characterized, “orphan” class IIb1 ganglion cell, previously regarded as a member of the “brisk-concentric” category of ganglion cells. Its branching pattern, quantitatively analyzed, is similar to that of the morphological counterparts of X and Y cells, and very different from that of the ON DS-s ganglion cell. Close analysis of the dendritic stratification of class IIb1 ganglion cells together with fiducial cells indicates that they differ from that of the ON DS-s cells. In agreement with one of the three previous studies, class IIb1/ON DS-t cells, unlike class IVus1/ON DS-s ganglion cells, in the main do not co-stratify with starburst amacrine cells. As the present study shows, however, portions of their dendrites do deviate from the main substratum, coming within range of starburst boutons. Parsimony favors DS input from starburst amacrine cells both to ON DS-s and to ON DS-t ganglion cells, given the similarity of their DS responses, but further studies will be required to substantiate the origin of the DS responses of ON DS-t cells. Previously reported OFF DS responses in ON DS-t cells, unmasked by pharmacological agents, and mediated by gap junctions with amacrine cells, suggests an unusual trans-sublaminar organization of directional selectivity in the inner plexiform layer, connecting sublamina a and sublamina b.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) has been shown to be an effective transneuronal tracer within both the peripheral and the central nervous system. The only investigations of this virus in the visual system have examined anterograde transport of PRV from injection sites in the retina. In the present study, we injected attenuated forms of PRV into the primary visual cortex of both rats and cats to determine whether transneuronal retrograde infection would occur back to the retina. In rats, we made small injections into visual cortex of a strain of PRV (Bartha Blu) that contained a β-galactosidase promoter insert. In cats, we injected PRV-M201 into area V1 of visual cortex. After a 2- to 4-day incubation period, we examined tissue from these animals for the presence of the β-galactosidase marker (rats) or the virus itself (cats). Cortical PRV injections resulted in transneuronal retrograde infection of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN), and retina. PRV was retinotopically distributed in the pathway. In addition, double-labeling experiments in cats using an antibody against gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were conducted to reveal PRV-labeled interneurons within the LGN and TRN. All TRN neurons were GABA+, as was a subset of LGN neurons. Only the subset of TRN neurons adjacent to the PRV-labeled sector of LGN was labeled with PRV. In addition, a subset of GABA+ interneurons in LGN was also labeled with PRV. We processed some tissue for electron microscopy to examine the morphology of the virus at various replication stages. No mature virions were detected in terminals from efferent pathways, although forms consistent with retrograde infection were encountered. We conclude that the PRV strains we have used produce a local infection that progresses primarily in the retrograde direction in the central visual pathways. The infection is transneuronal and viral replication maintains the intensity of the label throughout the chain of connected neurons, providing a means of examining detailed circuitry within the visual pathway.

Murine cones contain two opsins in the same cone, one ultraviolet (UV) and the other middle-wavelength sensitive (M). A long-wavelength flash only affecting M-opsin suppresses the cone electroretinogram (ERG) produced by light absorption of UV-cone opsin raising the hypothesis that activation of M-cone opsin suppresses UV-cone opsin responses in the same cone. Here we show that pharmacologic blockade of synaptic transmission in the superfused murine retina, which eliminates interaction from second-order neurons, fails to prevent suppression of the UV-opsin driven pathway by long-wavelength stimuli. This proves that the antagonism must be occurring in the same cone, co-expressing both opsins. Our results show that UV-opsin suppression successively ceases in presence of the M-opsin activating background light, which implies that cone light adaptation is controlled at the opsin stage, before activation of transducin. It also reveals the time course of a transient desensitization of cones due to post-opsin factors in the transduction cascade.

The present paper deals with the classical question how a psychological experience, in this case apparent lightness, is linked by intervening neural processing to physical variables. We address two methodological issues: (a) how does one know the appropriate physical variable (what is the right x?) to look at, and (b) how can behavioral measurements be used to probe the internal transformation that leads to psychological experience. We measured so-called lightness transfer functions (LTFs), that is the functions that describe the mapping between retinal luminance and perceived lightness for naturalistic checkerboard stimuli. The LTFs were measured for different illumination situations: plain view, a cast shadow, and an intervening transparent medium. Observers adjusted the luminance of a comparison patch such that it had the same lightness as each of the test patches. When the data were plotted in luminance–luminance space, we found qualitative differences between mapping functions in different contexts. These differences were greatly diminished when the data were plotted in terms of contrast. On contrast–contrast coordinates, the data were compatible with a single linear generative model. This result is an indication that, for the naturalistic scenes used here, lightness perception depends mostly on local contrast. We further discuss that, in addition to the mean adjustments, one may find it useful to consider also the variability of an observer’s adjustments in order to infer the true luminance-to-lightness mapping function.

The position, size, and shape of the receptive field (RF) of some cortical neurons change dynamically, in response to artificial scotoma conditioning (Pettet & Gilbert, 1992) and to retinal lesions (Chino et al., 1992; Darian-Smith & Gilbert, 1995) in adult animals. The RF dynamics are of interest because they show how visual systems may adaptively overcome damage (from lesions, scotomas, or other failures), may enhance processing efficiency by altering RF coverage in response to visual demand, and may perform perceptual learning. This paper presents an afferent excitatory synaptic plasticity rule and a lateral inhibitory synaptic plasticity rule—the EXIN rules (Marshall, 1995)—to model persistent RF changes after artificial scotoma conditioning and retinal lesions. The EXIN model is compared to the LISSOM model (Sirosh et al., 1996) and to a neuronal adaptation model (Xing & Gerstein, 1994). The rules within each model are isolated and are analyzed independently, to elucidate their roles in adult cortical RF dynamics. Based on computer simulations, the EXIN lateral inhibitory synaptic plasticity rule and the LISSOM lateral excitatory synaptic plasticity rule produced the best fit with current neurophysiological data on visual cortical plasticity in adult animals (Chino et al., 1992; Pettet & Gilbert, 1992; Darian-Smith & Gilbert, 1995) including (1) the retinal position and shape of the expanding RFs; (2) the corticotopic direction in which responsiveness returns to the silenced cortex; (3) the direction of RF shifts; (4) the amount of change in response to blank stimuli; and (5) the lack of dynamic RF changes during conditioning with a retinal lesion in one eye and the unlesioned eye kept open, in adult animals. The effects of the LISSOM lateral inhibitory synaptic plasticity rule during artificial scotoma conditioning are in conflict with those of the other two LISSOM synaptic plasticity rules. A novel “complementary scotoma” conditioning experiment, in which stimulation of two complementary regions of visual space alternates repeatedly, is proposed to differentiate the predictions of the EXIN and LISSOM rules.

The vertebrate retina contains a large number of different types of neurons that can be distinguished by their morphological properties. Assuming that no location should be without a contribution from the circuitry and function linked to a specific type of neuron, it is expected that the dendritic trees of neurons belonging to a type will cover the retina in a regular manner. Thus, for most types of neurons, the contribution to visual processing is thought to be independent of the exact location of individual neurons across the retina. Here, we have investigated the distribution of AII amacrine cells in rat retina. The AII is a multifunctional amacrine cell found in mammals and involved in synaptic microcircuits that contribute to visual processing under both scotopic and photopic conditions. Previous investigations have suggested that AIIs are regularly distributed, with a nearest-neighbor distance regularity index of ~4. It has been argued, however, that this presumed regularity results from treating somas as points, without taking into account their actual spatial extent which constrains the location of other cells of the same type. When we simulated random distributions of cell bodies with size and density similar to real AIIs, we confirmed that the simulated distributions could not be distinguished from the distributions observed experimentally for AIIs in different regions and eccentricities of the retina. The developmental mechanisms that generate the observed distributions of AIIs remain to be investigated.

Deactivation of light-activated squid rhodopsin was studied in vitro using GTPγS binding by G-protein as a direct measure of rhodopsin activity. Deactivation was inhibited by dilution of the retinal suspension or by removal of soluble components. Deactivation could be restored by addition of soluble material to washed membranes. These results indicate that the deactivation is not due entirely to a conformational transition within rhodopsin itself, but depends on the interaction with other molecules. The possibility that phosphorylation is involved in the deactivation was studied. Deactivation occurred in the presence and absence of added ATP. Deactivation also occurred in the presence of kinase inhibitors and after addition of apyrase, which reduced residual ATP levels to below 1μM. These results indicate that light-induced phosphorylation is not required for deactivation of squid rhodopsin. In this regard deactivation of squid rhodopsin is different from that of vertebrate rhodopsin, which requires phosphorylation.

We have studied the postnatal development of presumptive axon terminals (puncta) which were recognized by antibodies to the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and were located on the somata of area 17 neurons projecting to the ipsilateral area 18 of the visual cortex in cats ranging from 7 days of age to adulthood. Projection neurons were retrogradely labeled by injection of horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin into the ipsilateral area 18. These neurons were mainly pyramidal in shape at all the developmental stages examined and the adult distribution of labeled cells was reached by 21 days. Subsequent GABA postembedding immunohistochemistry using high-resolution light microscopy was carried out to study the development of GABAergic terminals on cell bodies of identified projecting neurons in layers II–III. At all ages examined, we found perisomatic GABAergic puncta on these cells. Their density showed a significant increase from postnatal days 7 to 45, and then remained largely constant through adulthood. Since GABAergic puncta are considered the light-microscopic correlate of GABAergic synaptic terminals, our results support the idea of a developmentally regulated increase in the inhibitory activity of local interneurons on area 17 pyramidal neurons projecting to area 18 in the cat visual cortex which occurs within the same time frame as that of the acquisition of the mature operation of these cells.

The Zoellner illusion is a geometric distortion occurring when nonorthogonal inducing lines appear to tilt veridically parallel bars. The retinal pathways contributing to such illusions are unknown. The goal of this experiment was to investigate the retinal origin of the illusion. This was accomplished by determining the contrast gain for illusion thresholds. The magnocellular (MC-) and parvocellular (PC-) pathways exhibit different contrast gains, and this difference can be used psychophysically to identify the pathway. The stimulus pattern was four vertical bars with a series of inducing lines. The bars were always 5% higher in contrast than the inducing bars. The pattern was presented on a larger pedestal. Two paradigms were used. In the pulsed-pedestal paradigm, the observer adapted to the background and the pedestal and pattern were presented together as a brief pulse. In the steady-pedestal paradigm, the observer adapted to the continuously presented pedestal and the pattern appeared as a brief pulse. The contrast between the pedestal and the pattern was varied to obtain thresholds for two criteria: perceiving the directions of the inner inducing lines, and perceiving the distortion of the bars. The results for both criteria were similar in shape, but displaced in sensitivity. Detection of the directions of the inner inducing lines was 0.16–0.29 log unit more sensitive than perception of the illusion. The data for the pulsed-pedestal paradigm depended on the contrast between the pedestal and the pattern and produced a shallow V-shape. These results were associated with mediation in the PC-pathway. The data for the steady-pedestal paradigm depended on the pedestal luminance in a linear relation and showed similar sensitivity to the data for the pulsed-pedestal paradigm. Perception of the illusion required 10–15% Weber contrast.

Neurons in visual cortical area V1 typically respond well to lines or edges of specific orientations. There have been many studies investigating how the responses of these neurons to an oriented edge are affected by changes in luminance contrast. However, in natural images, edges vary not only in contrast but also in the degree of blur, both because of changes in focus and also because shadows are not sharp. The effect of blur on the response dynamics of visual cortical neurons has not been explored. We presented luminance-defined single edges in the receptive fields of parafoveal (1–6 deg eccentric) V1 neurons of two macaque monkeys trained to fixate a spot of light. We varied the width of the blurred region of the edge stimuli up to 0.36 deg of visual angle. Even though the neurons responded robustly to stimuli that only contained high spatial frequencies and 0.36 deg is much larger than the limits of acuity at this eccentricity, changing the degree of blur had minimal effect on the responses of these neurons to the edge. Primates need to measure blur at the fovea to evaluate image quality and control accommodation, but this might only involve a specialist subpopulation of neurons. If visual cortical neurons in general responded differently to sharp and blurred stimuli, then this could provide a cue for form perception, for example, by helping to disambiguate the luminance edges created by real objects from those created by shadows. On the other hand, it might be important to avoid the distraction of changing blur as objects move in and out of the plane of fixation. Our results support the latter hypothesis: the responses of parafoveal V1 neurons are largely unaffected by changes in blur over a wide range.

The survival of retinal ganglion cells (GCs) in the left eye was studied on retinal wholemounts from 2–33 weeks after the surgical removal of the right tectum in juvenile Xenopus. Two to five weeks after tectal removal, about 76% of neurons of the retinal ganglion cell (GC) layer showed signs of retrograde degeneration: swelling of their somata and chromatolysis. Neurons that were not affected by the operation were taken to be either displaced amacrine cells (DAs) or GCs not projecting to the tectum. A portion of GCs showing retrograde degeneration became pyknotic and died within the period of 2–16 weeks after operation. Counts of surviving GCs 20–33 weeks after tectal removal amounted to about 55% of the corresponding neuron number in the right intact retina of the same animal. No discernible GC loss was observed in animals where only the optic fibers were cut at their entry point to the tectum indicating that axotomy alone, followed by rapid regrowth to the target, does not adversely influence the survival of GCs. In long-surviving animals, the left optic nerve was exposed to cobaltic-lysine complex and the position of filled optic axons within the brain determined. Optic axons whose tectal target had been removed were seen to cross over to the left intact tectum via the posterior and pretectal commissures. Aberrant projections were detected to the ipsilateral tectum and the diencephalic periventricular grey in addition to an increased projection to the accessory optic nucleus. It is concluded that the removal of the tectum, the main target of optic fiber projection, induces a very substantial GC death. Since only a portion of optic fibers were able to grow to alternative targets, the surviving GCs may have also included those with main projection areas to the diencephalic visual centers.

In the present study, the early postnatal distribution and subsequent fate of visual callosal neurons were studied in neonatal rat pups. Previous studies had indicated that the adult pattern of visual callosal neurons was sculpted from an initially uniform distribution in the neonatal cortex. To reexamine this issue, we used a sensitive tracer, latex microspheres conjugated either to rhodamine or fluorescein, that was injected into the occipital cortex of one hemisphere in pups on the day of birth (PND 1), PND 6, or PND 12. Examination of the resulting retrograde labeling of cortical neurons in the opposite hemisphere indicates that features of the mature visual callosal pattern are present as early as PND 1. At all stages of postnatal development, the relative density of callosal projection cells varies consistently across the mediolateral extent of primary visual cortex —it is always highest in the region of the 17/18a border and lowest in the body of area 17. These data strongly suggest that, from the outset, visual cortical neurons in the region of the 17/18a border preferentially make connections with the opposite hemisphere. The results of experiments in which callosal neurons were labeled on the day of birth indicate that only those neurons that have migrated to their final cortical destinations have extended callosal axons into the vicinity of the visual cortex in the opposite hemisphere. The initial pattern of callosal neurons resembles a dense, compact version of the mature one, and the present study suggests that much of the remaining change in the appearance of this pathway may be accounted for by the decrease in the overall density of neurons that is due to expansion of the cortical gray matter during postnatal life. Taken together, these results suggest that the development of the visual callosal pathway in the rat may be more similar to that in the monkey than has been reported previously.

Previous biochemical and immunohistochemical studies have shown that the neurotensin-related hexapeptide LANT6 is widespread and abundant in the avian nervous system. In the present study, immunohistochemical techniques were used to show that LANT6 is present in numerous cells of the retinal ganglion cell layer in pigeons. Consistent with the possibility that these LANT6+ retinal cells might be retinal ganglion cells, it was found that (1) the distribution of LANT6+ fibers and terminals in the central retinal target areas matched the distribution of central retinal projections; (2) the LANT6+ fibers and terminals are eliminated from retinal target areas by transection of the contralateral optic nerve; and (3) LANT6+ retinal cells in the ganglion cell layer can be retrogradely labeled by injections of fluorogold in the tectum. These results suggest that LANT6 may be utilized as a neuroactive substance by the central terminals of numerous retinal ganglion cells in birds. Similar anatomical findings have been previously reported for members of several other vertebrate groups, giving rise to the possibility that LANT6 (or its homologues in nonavians) may be a phylogenetically ubiquitous neuroactive substance used by retinal ganglion cells.

Previous studies have shown that directionally selective (DS) retinal ganglion cells cannot only discriminate the direction of a moving object but they can also discriminate the sequence of two flashes of light at neighboring locations in the visual field: that is, the cells elicit a DS response to both real and apparent motion. This study examines whether a DS response can be elicited in DS ganglion cells by simply stimulating two neighboring areas of the retina with high external K+. Extracellular recordings were made from ON-OFF DS ganglion cells in superfused rabbit retinas, and the responses of these cells to focal applications of 100 mM KCl to the vitreal surface of the retina were measured. All cells produced a burst of spikes (typically lasting 50–200 ms) when a short pulse (10–50 ms duration) of KCl was ejected from the tip of a micropipette that was placed within the cell's receptive field. When KCl was ejected successively from the tips of two micropipettes that were aligned along the preferred-null axis of a cell, sequence-dependent responses were observed. The response to the second micropipette was suppressed when mimicking motion in the cell's null direction, whereas an enhancement during apparent motion in the opposite direction frequently occurred. Sequence discrimination in these cells was eliminated by the GABA antagonist picrotoxin and by the Ca2+-channel blocker ω-conotoxin MVIIC, two drugs that are known to abolish directional selectivity in these ganglion cells. The spatiotemporal properties of the K+-evoked sequence-dependent responses are described and compared with previous findings on apparent motion responses of ON-OFF DS ganglion cells.

If the relative phase of red and green modulated lights is changed, at low temporal frequencies the response of cells of the magnocellular (MC) pathway has been found to be minimal not to counterphase, chromatic modulation (as expected of a luminance mechanism) but shifted to some phase intermediate between luminance and chromatic modulation. The results could only be modeled by assuming interaction between achromatic and chromatic inputs to MC cells. The ‘phase shift’ resembled that seen with psychophysical threshold measurements using the same stimuli. Psychophysical results also showed that the phase shift is dependent on the chromaticity of a background. The results reported here show that the direction of the phase shift in MC cells is reversed by changing the background from long to short wavelengths and is consistent with psychophysical observations. Cell behavior was again modeled by assuming vector summation of achromatic and chromatic inputs. The reversal of phase-shift direction requires a reversal in polarity of the chromatic input. The underlying physiological mechanism may involve summation of chromatic signals of opposite polarity; if the relative size of these signals depends on the background, this may determine the direction of phase shift.

In the cat, the analysis of visual motion cues has generally been attributed to the posteromedial lateral suprasylvian cortex (PMLS) (Toyama et al., 1985; Rauschecker et al., 1987; Rauschecker, 1988; Kim et al., 1997). The responses of neurons in this area are not critically dependent on inputs from the primary visual cortex (VC), as lesions of VC leave neuronal response properties in PMLS relatively unchanged (Spear & Baumann, 1979; Spear, 1988; Guido et al., 1990b). However, previous studies have used a limited range of visual stimuli. In this study, we assessed whether neurons in PMLS cortex remained direction-selective to complex motion stimuli following a lesion of VC, particularly to complex random dot kinematograms (RDKs). Unilateral aspiration of VC was performed on post-natal days 7–9. Single unit extracellular recordings were performed one year later in the ipsilateral PMLS cortex. As in previous studies, a reduction in the percentage of direction selective neurons was observed with drifting sinewave gratings. We report a previously unobserved phenomenon with sinewave gratings, in which there is a greater modulation of firing rate at the temporal frequency of the stimulus in animals with a lesion of VC, suggesting an increased segregation of ON and OFF sub-regions. A significant portion of neurons in PMLS cortex were direction selective to simple (16/18) and complex (11/16) RDKs. However, the strength of direction selectivity to both stimuli was reduced as compared to normals. The data suggest that complex motion processing is still present, albeit reduced, in PMLS cortex despite the removal of VC input. The complex RDK motion selectivity is consistent with both geniculo-cortical and extra-geniculate thalamo-cortical pathways in residual direction encoding.
