A key component of explaining the array of galaxies observed in the Universe is the feedback of active galactic nuclei, each powered by a massive black hole’s accretion disk. For accretion to occur, angular momentum must be lost by that which is accreted. Electromagnetic radiation must offer some respite in this regard, the contribution for which is quantified in this paper, using solely general relativity, under the thin-disk regime. Herein, I calculate extremised situations where photons are entirely responsible for energy removal in the disk and then extend and relate this to the standard relativistic accretion disk outlined by Novikov & Thorne, which includes internal angular-momentum transport. While there is potential for the contribution of angular-momentum removal from photons to be ≳ 1% out to ~ 104 Schwarzschild radii if the disk is irradiated and maximally liberated of angular momentum through inverse Compton scattering, it is more likely of order 102 Schwarzschild radii if thermal emission from the disk itself is stronger. The effect of radiation/scattering is stronger near the horizons of fast-spinning black holes, but, ultimately, other mechanisms must drive angular-momentum liberation/transport in accretion disks.

We present preliminary results for the estimation of barium [Ba/Fe], and strontium [Sr/Fe], abundances ratios using medium-resolution spectra (1–2 Å). We established a calibration between the abundance ratios and line indices for Ba and Sr, using multiple regression and artificial neural network techniques. A comparison between the two techniques (showing the advantage of the latter), as well as a discussion of future work, is presented.

Microquasars are Galactic X-ray binaries which show radio emission from relativistic outflows. Here we argue that the origins of radio emission from microquasars and compact extragalactic radio sources are similar. In particular, both can be explained qualitatively by a model in which shocks are propagating in the relativistic jets. The microquasar GRO J1655–40 is used to illustrate that the spectral evolution of its 1994 radio outburst can be explained by the growth phase of the generalised-shock model, similar to the case of the quasar 3C 273.

In radio astronomy, the science output of a telescope is often limited by computational resources. This is especially true for transient and technosignature surveys that need to search high-resolution data across a large parameter space. The tremendous data volumes produced by modern radio array telescopes exacerbate these processing challenges. Here, we introduce a ‘reduced-resolution’ beamforming approach to alleviate downstream processing requirements. Our approach, based on post-correlation beamforming, allows sensitivity to be traded against the number of beams needed to cover a given survey area. Using the MeerKAT and Murchison Widefield Array telescopes as examples, we show that survey speed can be vastly increased, and downstream signal processing requirements vastly decreased, if a moderate sacrifice to sensitivity is allowed. We show the reduced-resolution beamforming technique is intimately related to standard techniques used in synthesis imaging. We suggest that reduced-resolution beamforming should be considered to ease data processing challenges in current and planned searches; further, reduced-resolution beamforming may provide a path to computationally expensive search strategies previously considered infeasible.

After more than five years of development, we present a new version of Dark Sage, a semi-analytic model (SAM) of galaxy formation that breaks the mould for models of its kind. Included among the major changes is an overhauled treatment of stellar feedback that is derived from energy conservation, operates on local scales, affects gas gradually over time rather than instantaneously, and predicts a mass loading factor for every galaxy. Building on the model’s resolved angular momentum structure of galaxies, we now consider the heating of stellar discs, delivering predictions for disc structure both radially and vertically. We add a further dimension to stellar discs by tracking the distribution of stellar ages in each annulus. Each annulus–age bin has its own velocity dispersion and metallicity evolved in the model. This allows Dark Sage to make structural predictions for galaxies that previously only hydrodynamic simulations could. We present the model as run on the merger trees of the highest-resolution gravity-only simulation of the MillenniumTNG suite. Despite its additional complexity relative to other SAMs, Dark Sage only has three free parameters, the least of any SAM, which we calibrate exclusively against the cosmic star formation history and the $z = 0$ stellar and H i mass functions using a particle-swarm optimisation method. The report of a detection of an absorption profile centred at 78 MHz in the continuum radio background spectrum by the EDGES experiment and its interpretation as the redshifted 21 cm signal of cosmological origin has become one of the most debated results of observational cosmology in recent times. The cosmological 21 cm has long been proposed to be a powerful probe for observing the early Universe and tracing its evolution over cosmic time. Even though the science case is well established, measurement challenges posed on the technical ground are not fully understood to the level of claiming a successful detection. EDGES’s detection has naturally motivated a number of experimental attempts worldwide to corroborate the findings. In this paper, we present a precision cross-correlation spectrometer HYPEREION purpose-designed for a precision radio background measurement between 50–120 MHz to detect the absorption profile reported by the EDGES experiment. HYPEREION implements a pre-correlation signal processing technique that self-calibrates any spurious additive contamination from within the system and delivers a differential measurement of the sky spectrum and a reference thermal load internal to the system. This ensures an unambiguous ‘zero-point’ of absolute calibration of the purported absorption profile. We present the system design, measurement equations of the ideal system, systematic effects in the real system, and finally, an assessment of the real system output for the detection of the absorption profile at 78 MHz in the continuum radio background spectrum.

Astronomy and cosmology have a substantial observational and theoretical basis, but our standard model still depends on some working assumptions. I comment on the nature of the issues behind these assumptions, the guidance we might find from past resolutions of such issues, and the models we might consider for the future of research in this subject.

Construction of the Pierre Auger Observatory for the study of the highest-energy cosmic rays is about to begin. Prior to the availability of data from that experiment, decisions should be made on techniques for the analysis of the directional properties of those data. We examine here one possible analysis tool, the two-point angular autocorrelation function. As a concrete example, data from the SUGAR array are examined in this way. Possible clustering of the data is observed, and the identification of such clustering with candidate astronomical objects in a purpose-developed catalogue is investigated.

Curiously, our Universe was born in a low entropy state, with abundant free energy to power stars and life. The form that this free energy takes is usually thought to be gravitational: the Universe is almost perfectly smooth, and so can produce sources of energy as matter collapses under gravity. It has recently been argued that a more important source of low-entropy energy is nuclear: the Universe expands too fast to remain in nuclear statistical equilibrium, effectively shutting off nucleosynthesis in the first few minutes, providing leftover hydrogen as fuel for stars. Here, we fill in the astrophysical details of this scenario and seek the conditions under which a Universe will emerge from early nucleosynthesis as almost-purely iron. In so doing, we identify a hitherto-overlooked character in the story of the origin of the second law: matter–antimatter asymmetry.

We conducted a study on the X-ray polarisation properties of MCG-5-23-16 by analysing long-term monitoring data from NuSTAR jointly with IXPE observations made in May and November 2022. The re-analysis of IXPE data gives model-dependent polarisation degree, PD (%) = $1.08\pm0.66$ in the energy band 2–8 keV, which agrees with previous studies within error bars. The model-independent analysis of PD poses an upper limit of $\leq3.8$ ($1\sigma$ level) for the same energy band. The observed upper limit of PD, along with broadband spectral analysis (2–79 keV) using an accretion-ejection based model, allowed us to derive the corona geometry (i.e. radius and height) and the accretion disc inclination ($\sim33^\circ$). Additional NuSTAR observations were also analysed to gain insights into the accretion flow properties of the source and to estimate the expected polarisation during those epochs with PD $\sim 4.3\%$. The radius and height of the corona varies between $28.2\pm3.1 - 39.8\pm4.6$ r$_s$ and $14.3\pm1.7-21.4\pm1.9$ r$_s$ respectively, with a mass outflow rate from the corona measuring $0.14\pm0.03-0.2\pm0.03$ Eddington rate ($\dot m_{\mathrm{Edd}}$). The estimated PD values were nearly constant up to a certain radial distance and height of the corona and then decreased for increasing corona geometry. The spectral analysis further provided an estimate for the mass of the central black hole $\sim2\times 10^7$ M$_\odot$ and the velocity of the outflowing gas $\sim0.16-0.19c$. A comparative broadband spectral study using reflection-based models estimates the disc inclination between $\sim 31^\circ\pm8^\circ-45^\circ\pm7^\circ$, and yields an expected PD of 3.4–6.0%. We also found a weak reflection fraction and a less ionised distant reflecting medium. The expected PD measured using accretion-ejection and reflection models is less compared to the expected PD measured for a given disc inclination of $45^\circ$. Our modelling of the disc-corona-outflows and polarisation connection can be extended and validated with data from the recently launched XPoSat, India’s first X-ray Polarimeter Satellite, offering potential applications to other sources.

The galaxy IC4553 (Arp 220) is a peculiar galaxy having a redshift of 0.02. It has been variously described as consisting of a symbiotic pair of galaxies, as having a highly peculiar pair of nuclei, or as consisting of a nucleus bisected by a dust lane. In addition, it exhibits OH maser emission which is both the most intrinsically luminous (by four orders of magnitude) and the most distant yet detected. MERLIN observations of the continuum emission at 18 cm show a core-dominated triple structure, probably indicating jets about 500 pc in extent. The integrated OH maser emission has an identical spatial structure, but when this structure is examined as a function of frequency across the line it is found that each spatial component has its greatest intensity at a different frequency. This is interpreted as amplification of the radio continuum image by the OH masers. The change in spatial structure across the emission line is caused by the velocity structure of the OH gas. Measurements of the velocities of these masers therefore reveal the kinematics of the central part of the galaxy. Optical and infrared observations indicate that at the centre of the galaxy is a Seyfertlike active galactic nucleus, which appears double on optical plates only because of the dense dust lane which bisects the nuclear region. This indicates that IC4553 is an edge-on Seyfertlike galaxy. The OH maser radiation is a result of stimulation of the OH along the line of sight within the galactic plane by the strong far-infrared radiation from the nucleus. No abnormal conditions are required for this process, so IC4553 may not be unique, and we should search for OH maser emission in other edge-on active galaxies.

we use Monte Carlo simulations of the period distribution of magnetic cataclysmic variables to show that the synchronised AM Herculis-type systems and the asynchronous Intermediate Polars are essentially unrelated systems following different evolutionary scenarios.

Fabry-Perot instruments have been extensively used for many years for the study of spatially extended emission nebulae because they offer a potential luminosity resolution product (L × R pot) which exceeds by a high factor tha attainable by aerating spectrometer. Meaburn (1970) shows that this product is given by the relationwhere P is the number of resolution elements each containing a maximum solid angle, Ω observed simultaneously, ti is the refractive index of the medium between the plates, A is the acceptance area of the device, εo is the transmission coefficient of the associated optics and εF the transmission coefficient of the Fabry-Perot (which if coated with dielectric multilayers can be very high).

A spectral line survey for interstellar NH3 is being carried out using the 64-m telescopes at Parkes and Tidbinbilla. Both telescopes are equipped with K-band maser receivers yielding system temperatures below 100 K. The preliminary survey is being made with the Parkes antenna (beam = 1.35 arcmin), with follow-up mapping of the more interesting sources at Tidbinbilla (beam = 0.9 arcmin). The selected sources have in general been HII regions from the H2CO surveys made at Parkes. Statistical results from initial observations of the (1, 1), (2, 2), and (3, 3) lines in the preliminary survey are presented.

In a recent paper Aizu and Tabara list 36 radio sources classified as supernova remnants (SNR). Some of these identifications are based on low-resolution radio data and are consequently unreliable. Using the Parkes 210-foot radio telescope at 635, 1410 and 2650 MHz (beamwidth 31′, 15′ and 8′.4 respectively), E. R. Hill and the author observed the seven sources listed in Table I. Of these seven, there is close agreement with Aizu and Tabara’s data only in the last one (3C396.1), and we agree with the SNR classification, with certain reservations, for only three of these sources.

There is a need for standardised terminology in the field of astronomy. A project on behalf of the International Astronomical Union has been undertaken by astronomy librarians to compile a thesaurus for inputting to and accessing computer database systems.

The edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5793 has been observed at frequencies of 4860 and 14940 MHz with the Very Large Array. The corresponding half-intensity beamwidths in the final maps were 0.65 × 0.40 and 0.19 × 0.11 arcsec2. The maps show a continuum source close to the optical nucleus with dimensions of ≤0.01 and 0.04 arcsec in right ascension and declination. The average spectral index is –0.6.

Since the work of Wu and Lee (1979) there has been renewed interest in the classical theory of electron cyclotron masers (Lee and Wu 1980, Lee et al. 1980, Wu et al. 1981, 1982, Hewitt et al. 1981, 1982, Melrose et al. 1982, Omidi and Gurnett 1982, Melrose and Dulk 1982). A useful idea in these recent developments of the classical theory concerns a geometric interpretation of the classical gyroresonance condition

The ratio of the mass density in visible galaxies to the upper limit for the HI mass density determined from the lack of continuous Ly-α absorption in QSO spectra is 3 × 104. Thus, if galaxies form by condensation from an intergalactic medium, the process must be extremely efficient. Although no absorption due to a continuous distribution of intergalactic HI has been detected, many QSOs have been discovered that have absorption lines in their spectra, which have redshifts very different from the emission lines, and may be produced in clouds of integalactic HI. As would be expected if this were the case, the proportion of QSOs with absorption lines in their spectra is greatest for those which have large emission line redshifts. Another possibility, especially for those absorption lines in redshift systems with Zabs nearly equal to Zem , is that the absorption lines are produced in clouds surrounding the QSO.
