The calculation of coupling coefficients for muon telescopes has previously used interpolation from a limited set of asymptotic directions of arrival of primary particles. Furthermore, these calculations have not incorporated curvature of the atmosphere and thus diverge from the true response at zenith angles greater than about 75 degrees. The necessary extensions to calculate coupling coefficients at arbitrary zenith angles are given, including an improved method of incorporating the asymptotic directions of the primary particles. It is shown, using this method, that certain coupling coefficients are highly sensitive to small changes in asymptotic directions for some telescope configurations.

This review summarizes the astrophysical evidence for the existence of black holes provided by their gravitational influence on nearby matter. Two classes of accreting black holes have now been observationally verified: supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei, and stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries (XRBs). With the recent re-discovery of ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) sources, fresh evidence has also emerged for the existence of a third class of accreting black holes: intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). The properties of the three classes of accreting black holes are briefly discussed.

The encounter of the spacecraft Voyager 2 with Neptune and its large satellite Triton in August 1989 will provide a crucial test of ideas regarding the origin and chemical composition of the outer solar system. In this pre-encounter paper we quantify the possibility that Triton is a captured moon which, like Pluto and Charon, originally condensed as a major planetesimal within the gas ring that was shed by the contracting protosolar cloud at Neptune’s orbit. Ideas of supersonic convective turbulence are used to compute the gas pressure, temperature and rate of catalytic synthesis of CH4, CO2 and solid carbon within the protosolar cloud, assuming that all C is initially present as CO. The calculations lead to a unique composition for Triton, Pluto, and Charon: each body consists of, by mass, 18.5% solid CO2 ice, 4% graphite, 0.5% CH4 ice, 29% methanated water ice and 48% anhydrous rock. This mix has a density consistent with that of the Pluto-Charon system and yields a predicted mean density for Triton of 2.20±0.05 g cm−3, for satellite radius equal to 1750 km.

A survey of clusters of galaxies from Abell’s catalogue has been carried out using the Mk II 11 cm receiver recently installed at Parkes. For the present preliminary report only sources with flux densities down to about 0.3 f.u. will be considered, although the sensitivity limit of the receiver is about one-sixth of that value.

The Gaia satellite, planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2013, is the next-generation astrometry mission following Hipparcos. Gaia’s primary science goal is to determine the kinematics, chemical structure, and evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy. In addition to this core science goal, the Gaia space mission is expected to discover thousands of Solar System objects. Because of orbital constraints, Gaia will only have a limited opportunity for astrometric follow-up of these discoveries. In 2010, the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC) initiated a program to identify ground-based optical telescopes for a Gaia follow-up network for Solar System Objects to perform the following critical tasks: confirmation of discovery, identification of body, object tracking to constrain orbits. To date, this network comprises 37 observing sites (representing 53 instruments). The Zadko Telescope, located in Western Australia, was highlighted as an important network node because of its southern location, longitude, and automated scheduling system. We describe the first follow-up tests using the fast moving Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2005 YU55 as the target.

Duley (1974) has shown that, at the temperatures usually associated with interstellar gas clouds, we would expect CNO grains to be present. During gravitational collapse these grains migrate to the centre of the gas cloud, leading to an enhancement of the heavy-element abundance in the core (Prentice 1976, 1978). It was Krautschneider (1977) who verified such a scenario, by considering the dynamical collapse of gas and grain clouds. If such an initial radial abundance inhomogeneity existed, Prentice (1976a) showed that this configuration may well survive the later convective mixing phase and thus approach the zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) with a small (-v 3% by mass) metal enhanced core.

The cosmic ray array at Buckland Park is being developed to extend its useful collecting area at 1016 eV to ∼105m2 so that anisotropy measurements can be made at higher energies than previously possible with that system. A new array is also being designed to assist with this investigation. Design considerations for the new arrays are discussed.

The supernova rate in spirals of types Sc and Sd shows a sharp peak in face-on galaxies with inclination i ≤ 25°. This suggests that most supernovae in late-type galaxies occur in rich clusters or associations that are located at the base of chimney-like structures formed by a previous generation of supernovae. These chimneys are transparent because most of the dust contained in the rising column of gas within them had previously been destroyed in the hot bubble surrounding supernovae.

Recent numerical experiments (Norman et al. 1980), which simulate the axisymmetric collapse of a rotating, self gravitating cloud, show that spurious angular momentum transport can seriously affect the evolution of the cloud. In particular, it may determine if a ring-like density enhancement will occur. The spurious angular momentum transport can arise either from an explicit artificial viscosity, which might be required if shocks occur, or from an implicit viscosity due to truncation errors in the difference equation approximation to the exact equations. In donor cell schemes like those used by Tohline (1980) and Boss (1980) spurious angular momentum transport is due to truncation errors in the difference equations. For axisymmetric problems the errors are usually not serious since the typical length of a cell in the computational grid is very much less than the length scale of the cloud. We would expect the errors to be much greater when fragmentation occurs because the length scale of a fragment may only be comparable to that of three or four cells.

If the relative velocity between a plasma and a molecular cloud impinging on it exceeds the Alfvén critical ionization velocity, then the surface of the molecular cloud can be ionized. This phenomenon has been used to model some of the ionized regions at the Galactic Centre. A review of the mechanism behind Alfven’s critical ionization phenomenon is presented here, and its use at the Galactic Centre is discussed.

As part of an identification programme undertaken on the southern section of the Molonglo Deep Sky Survey of Radio Sources, the limiting magnitudes of some of the available ESO-B films and SRC-J films and plates in this area have been determined. The Molonglo Deep Sky Survey has been described by Robertson (1977). The southern section comprises a 45’ wide strip centred about declination -62° and stretching in an irregular fashion from 18h 25m to 00h 16m.

A coudé spectrogram of dispersion 150 µ/Å, exposed at the 74-inch reflector by D. S. Mathewson, reveals very many unusually sharp absorption lines due to ionized metals in the atmosphere of the B9 star HD 1909.

Clusters containing cepheids, and especially clusters containing more than one cepheid, provide information on the advanced evolutionary stages of massive stars, and on the factors which influence the period-frequency relations and lifetimes of cepheids. NGC 1866, in the LMC, is already well known in this respect. NGC 2010 was found by Hodge to contain two cepheids. Two more variables have been found in this cluster which, from their magnitudes and colours, are almost certainly cepheids, though we do not yet have periods for them. We noticed also that two known cepheids, HV 2868 and HV 2870, are associated with NGC 2136.

The ground level event (GLE) observed on November 22, 1977, is of interest because of the spread of onset times observed by various cosmic ray neutron monitors. Previous reports (Fenton, Fenton and Humble 1978, 1979) have discussed this matter without being able to reach definite conclusions. We have now obtained data from a further seven neutron monitors, and also some from the Imp 8 spacecraft. These data combine to suggest that the event may have been more complex than we initially supposed.

The extreme isotropy of cosmic ray events allows one to put upper limits on any possible non-isotropic contribution to the flux. In particular, one can investigate any excess of events which may be confined to the galactic plane. Such extra events would be expected from galactic ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray sources. Under the assumption of an isotropic cosmic ray flux, recent Buckland Park data place a 95% confidence level limit on the total southern hemisphere (declination −15° to −55°) flux of UHE gamma-rays at between 0.6 and 6 equivalent Cygnus X-3 sources, depending on assumptions concerning the gamma-ray spectrum.

In this paper, we present the stationary axisymmetric configuration of a resistive magnetised thick accretion disc in the vicinity of external gravity and intrinsic dipolar magnetic field of a slowly rotating black hole. The plasma is described by the equations of fully general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) along with the Ohm’s law and in the absence of the effects of radiation fields. We try to solve these two-dimensional MHD equations analytically as much as possible. However, we sometimes inevitably refer to numerical methods as well. To fully understand the relativistic geometrically thick accretion disc structure, we consider all three components of the fluid velocity to be non-zero. This implies that the magnetofluid can flow in all three directions surrounding the central black hole. As we get radially closer to the hole, the fluid flows faster in all those directions. However, as we move towards the equator along the meridional direction, the radial inflow becomes stronger from both the speed and the mass accretion rate points of view. Nonetheless, the vertical (meridional) speed and the rotation of the plasma disc become slower in that direction. Due to the presence of pressure gradient forces, a sub-Keplerian angular momentum distribution throughout the thick disc is expected as well. To get a concise analytical form of the rate of accretion, we assume that the radial dependency of radial and meridional fluid velocities is the same. This simplifying assumption leads to radial independency of mass accretion rate. The motion of the accreting plasma produces an azimuthal current whose strength is specified based on the strength of the external dipolar magnetic field. This current generates a poloidal magnetic field in the disc which is continuous across the disc boundary surface due to the presence of the finite resistivity for the plasma. The gas in the disc is vertically supported not only by the gas pressure but also by the magnetic pressure.

We examine the long-term stability (on decade-like timescales) of optical ‘high polarisation’ (HP) state with ${p_{opt}}$ ${> 3\%}$, which commonly occurs in flat-spectrum (i.e., beamed) radio quasars (FSRQs) and is a prominent marker of blazar state. Using this clue, roughly a quarter of the FSRQ population has been reported to undergo HP $\leftrightarrow$ non-HP state transition on year-like timescales. This work examines the extent to which HP (i.e., blazar) state can endure in a FSRQ, despite these ‘frequent’ state transitions. This is the first attempt to verify, using purely opto-polarimetric data for a much enlarged sample of blazars, the recent curious finding that blazar state in individual quasars persists for at least a few decades, despite its changing/swinging observed fairly commonly on year-like timescales. The present analysis is based on a well-defined sample of 83 radio quasars, extracted from the opto-polarimetric survey RoboPol (2013–2017), for which old opto-polarimetric data taken prior to 1990 could be found in the literature. By a source-wise comparison of these two datasets of the same observable ($p_{opt}$), we find that $\sim$90% of the 63 quasars found in blazar state in our RoboPol sample, were also observed to be in that state about three decades before. On the other hand, within the RoboPol survey itself, we find that roughly a quarter of the blazars in our sample migrated to the other polarisation state on year-like timescales, by crossing the customary $p_{opt}$ = 3% threshold. Evidently, these relatively frequent transitions (in either direction) do not curtail the propensity of a radio quasar to retain its blazar (i.e., HP) state for at least a few decades. The observed transitions/swings of polarisation state are probably manifestation of transient processes, like ejections of synchrotron plasma blobs (VLBI radio knots) from the active nucleus.

To explore the role environment plays in influencing galaxy evolution at high redshifts, we study $2.0\leq z<4.2$ environments using the FourStar Galaxy Evolution (ZFOURGE) survey. Using galaxies from the COSMOS legacy field with ${\rm log(M_{*}/M_{\odot})}\geq9.5$, we use a seventh nearest neighbour density estimator to quantify galaxy environment, dividing this into bins of low-, intermediate-, and high-density. We discover new high-density environment candidates across $2.0\leq z<2.4$ and $3.1\leq z<4.2$. We analyse the quiescent fraction, stellar mass and specific star formation rate (sSFR) of our galaxies to understand how these vary with redshift and environment. Our results reveal that, across $2.0\leq z<2.4$, the high-density environments are the most significant regions, which consist of elevated quiescent fractions, ${\rm log(M_{*}/M_{\odot})}\geq10.2$ massive galaxies and suppressed star formation activity. At $3.1\leq z<4.2$, we find that high-density regions consist of elevated stellar masses but require more complete samples of quiescent and sSFR data to study the effects of environment in more detail at these higher redshifts. Overall, our results suggest that well-evolved, passive galaxies are already in place in high-density environments at $z\sim2.4$, and that the Butcher–Oemler effect and SFR-density relation may not reverse towards higher redshifts as previously thought.
